The Little Mermaid is probably one of my favorite Disney movies of all time, and it kind of always has been since I used to watch it like every day when I was around 3-4. My dad used to pretend he was King Triton for me sometimes and he always said I looked like Ariel because of my red hair, and I used to cry whenever the movie ended because i loved it so much. Ah, memories.
The Live action version with Chloe Moretz is from Universal Pictures not Disney therefore she is not Ariel. They're following the darker theme of the original story. Disney's Live action version is in development with Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda partnering for the songs but no one has been cast yet. And the picture that was shown whenever Howard Ashman was mentioned, that's not Howard Ashman. Howard Ashman passed away in 1991 at age 40.
I saw that and I was like...ummm that is not Howard Ashman. Not cool, especially considering the integral part he played in the development of The Little Mermaid AND Beauty and the Beast.
I think the story takes place somewhere on a European cost of the Mediterranean Sea (perhaps Greece). I based this off of several hints from the original story and the movie. For example: Book: - The prince is described as having coal black eyes and raven hair (this obviously doesn’t settle anything, but a Mediterranean/ Arabic prince is much more likely to be so dark than a central or northern European one) - The beaches are described as having fine, white sand with lofty palm trees, orange trees, and citron trees (all three of which can only easily be grown in tropical to sub-tropical climates such as in the Mediterranean) - The rolling green hills have grape vines on them (this at least rules out Denmark- see grape- growing regions of Europe below) - The convent is specifically described as being built of white material (immediately putting one in mind of Mediterranean architecture) and the palace of yellow stone with long flights of marble steps, gilded cupolas, pillars, and marble statues (reminiscent of Greek and Italian architecture) - The little mermaid was given robes of silk and muslin and wore silk and gold to the wedding (perhaps doesn’t mean much but that’s two of her outfits that include silk and silk was most widely popular in the Mediterranean where it was directly imported and later manufactured) - The prince had female slaves who wore silk and gold and danced (that doesn’t sound European at all, that’s much more likely Middle Eastern) Movie: - The chef is French and Ariel and Eric buy baguettes in the village (French influence) - The castle architecture (see below) looks very similar to “Mediterranean architecture homes” (see below) - Grapes shown in the village - Palm trees shown in the village and palace - Onion dome shown in village (possibly Middle Eastern influence) - Arabic-style windows shown in the village (Middle Eastern influence) - Sebastian originally was supposed to have an English accent instead of a Jamaican one. He was changed mostly to create a more specific musical style. In conclusion, the best place in which you can find Middle Eastern, French, Greek, and Italian influences with a tropical climate is along the European shore in the Mediterranean. Possibly Greece.
Nice video but I noticed some things. 2:43 That image is that of Thomas Schumader, not Howard Ashman. 3:24 I can hear music that was used in Christmas with Sonic in Paradise. 9:01 Glenn Keane actually worked on the Beast, not Belle.
Thank you for pointing out about the wrong image used for Howard. A simple Google search would've shown them that. Or I dunno, watching the TLM BluRay???
There are currently 2 live-action Little Mermaid movies being developed by major studios: 1. UNIVERSAL 2. DISNEY UNIVERSAL is more faithful to the original Andersen's story and casts Chloe Grace Moretz (who now quitted the project) DISNEY is based more on the 1989 Disney animation. It will be a musical. With Alan Menken returning as composer and will be joined as Hamilton's Lin Manuel Miranda to add new music. The one you are talking about is Universal's.
I agree with most of your theory but when it comes to Sébastien what threw me off is his voice is not from Jamaica it's from Trinidad what does the saying home country African home country of the singer Akon FYI but other than that like I said you're very spot-on with your location about the little mermaid
Yes I totally agree. Please fredarator pleasasse make a 107 fact of Rise of the GUARDIANS. I would love you even more than I do now. Rotg is one of my top ten favorite animated movies of all times.
2:43, 6:28- Sorry, but why are you showing a photo of Tom Schumacher and saying he's Howard Ashman? 2:59 - His name spelled, "Kay Nielsen," but it's pronounced, "Kye." Rhymes with "tie". 9:01 - Glen Keane animated Beast, in 'Beauty and the Beast,' not Belle. (Also 8:59, her name is pronounced, ""Mare - ah - hoo - tay. ")
Don't know if its been stated but #107 is wrong. Moretz is going to play the Little Mermaid in the Universal Studios rendition of the fairy tale. As of yet the Disney live action film has not revealed their cast or many details about the film...But Lin Manuel Miranda is set to be part of the musical development.

Matt Lucas I know, I want them to do Kim Possible and Danny Phantom so much! Two of some of my favorite cartoons. Hope they do them soon! But meh, hopefully they'll do them soon!
Matt Lucas Loud House is pretty good, I don't think that it'll be one of my favorites, but it isn't bad. And yeah, there's a ton of cartoons they a lot of people have requested that they need to do.
One Dance was actually just used for advertisements and there is only one song that was taken out of the movie - it was called Silence is Golden and replaced by Poor Unfortunate Souls.
That is not Howard Ashman. He died in 1991 after just working on beauty and the beast and just starting Aladdin at the age of 40. I highly recommend watching Howard on Disney+ as he was fundamental in creating the little mermaid
I love this video, except for one major flaw: The man pictured when talking about Howard Ashman, is Peter Schneider. He was an executive at Disney at the time.
The flowing intro ripples set a perfect mood of gentle currents. The raised 4th (e.g. F# not F) invokes both wide-eyed wonder at "this stuff... isn't it neat?" and a wish to be "part of that world."
Katzenburg was a monster to Disney animation. he nearly killed the Renaissance before it began. the documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty is fantastic covering 1984-1994 at Disney animation, and actually makes Michael Eisner not look so bad, since he got all the crap in the press back then. here's a fact for ya: the name of the street where the animators had to move to after being kicked out of the animation building was Flower St. in Burbank.
@@juanstrong3695 both Katzenberg and Eisner resigned. Katzenberg left in a huff and founded DreamWorks with Steven Spielberg and David Geffen. Eisner resigned do to health reasons and partly was asked to step down
First off, Shrek is DreamWorks not Disney. Secondly, the fact you missed is that after Kenneth Mars left the Little Mermaid Franchise due to his age (or him being dead), he was replaced by Jim Cummings for the Little Mermaid 3: Ariel's beginning, Cummings is also known for being Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Darkwing Duck, Pete, Leatherhead, Dr. Robotnik, and several others. And lastly, 107 facts on either Darkwing Duck, Savage Dragon, W.I.T.C.H., or RWBY.
The Little Mermaid live action movie with Chloe Grace Moretz isn't Disney. It's Universal and is going to be a lot darker, based on the original Hans Christian Anderson story. Disney is going to do one eventually, but there is no casting done yet.
This is why I don't believe who is playing Ariel in the live action movie until it's out. Too many names have been mentioned over the past few years. But definitely has a few facts I didnt know 👍
+Mercedes Samedy amen brother i felt cheated for the live action jungle book I hated how they changed the ending and wasn't a fan of the legend of the elephants was a good concept but I wish they spoke
It's probably really dumb but since my school performed the Broadway version, and since I had to have sunk hundreds of hours into the thing, I feel this really personal connection to the story. I also have most of the songs memorized as a result of singing in many of them.
not necessarily about tlm but i thought i'd point it out: glen keane actually didn't animate belle, he animated the beast.. james baxter and mark henn actually animated belle, if i remember correctly
108: Hans Christian Anderson was attracted to a guy who unfortunately was not interested in him. Thats why in the original story the mermaid cannot get the prince and dissolves into sea foam.
Here's a few things worth noting: -Ron Clements and John Musker previously had part in directing "The Great Mouse Detective" and also went on to direct "Aladdin", "Hercules", "Treasure Planet", and "Princess and the Frog", and are also the directors behind the soon-to-be-released "Moana". -Even though Patrick Stewart did not get the role of Triton, he would go on to voice The Great Prince in Bambi 2 (one of Disney's better sequels) -Rosanne did eventually land a role for Disney. The sad thing was that it was "Home on the Range", which was was so hated that she was forced to quit show biz and became a nut farmer.
Allow me to provide a correction for that last fact: the live-action Little Mermaid movie starring Chloe Grace Moretz will actually be released by Working Title Films, not Disney. While Disney is working on their own live-action Little Mermaid, it'll be an entirely different movie.
Please do 107 facts about .. - Mr Bean (Animated & Action) - Tom and Jerry - Peter Pan (2003 movie) - Lilo and Stitch - Rise of the Guardians - Winx Club - Totally Spies - Kim Possible - That's So Raven (That's all I could think of so far xD)
I hate to be "that girl", but a few of these were incorrect! Most of the mistakes you could easily get away with, but I really feel the need to clear up the last fact you mentioned. Chloë Grace Moretz is NOT playing Ariel! She's playing the little mermaid in a non-Disney live action adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story. So far, the newly announced Disney live action adaptation has not released any casting information, but has confirmed that Alan Menken will return to write new music, along with composer/lyricist Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton and In the Heights. Other than that, I really enjoyed this video :)
I never knew these! Cool! But this has always confused me: If Scuttle gave Ariel the wrong names for fork (dinglehopper), and pipe (snarfblatt), but yet she know the correct words for feet, street, and fire. It's a little inconsistent if you ask me.
Another fact is that Ariel was the only Disney Princess to have blood siblings until Elsa and Anna. Other's like Belle and Pocahontas's didn't make it into their films.
You got two of these "facts" wrong. One Dance was written many years after the movie came out, and the live action movie you mentioned is being produced by Universal Studios, not Disney. Disney IS working on a live action version of the film, but has not released any kind of cast list yet. That said, I'd love to see another 107 facts vid about this movie! Also, a Mulan one if you haven't done one yet
Ariel is the ONLY Disney princess to have a child. Everyone forgets about Melody..
Tru
We don't talk about that.
Because Ariel never had a child, Disney version is non Canon - Ariel really died. You will notice it in Disney's Descendents
What about cinderealla?
All those straight to DVD sequels are absolute garbage. All of them are. They are non-cannon and they were made for a quick buck.

- The rolling green hills have grape vines on them (this at least rules out Denmark- see grape- growing regions of Europe below)
- The convent is specifically described as being built of white material (immediately putting one in mind of Mediterranean architecture) and the palace of yellow stone with long flights of marble steps, gilded cupolas, pillars, and marble statues (reminiscent of Greek and Italian architecture)
- The little mermaid was given robes of silk and muslin and wore silk and gold to the wedding (perhaps doesn’t mean much but that’s two of her outfits that include silk and silk was most widely popular in the Mediterranean where it was directly imported and later manufactured)
- The prince had female slaves who wore silk and gold and danced (that doesn’t sound European at all, that’s much more likely Middle Eastern)
Movie:
- The chef is French and Ariel and Eric buy baguettes in the village (French influence)
- The castle architecture (see below) looks very similar to “Mediterranean architecture homes” (see below)
- Grapes shown in the village
- Palm trees shown in the village and palace
- Onion dome shown in village (possibly Middle Eastern influence)
- Arabic-style windows shown in the village (Middle Eastern influence)
- Sebastian originally was supposed to have an English accent instead of a Jamaican one. He was changed mostly to create a more specific musical style.
