Now in her later 50s she has let up on the procedures and is looking more real once again. Her huge heart shines through, however, no matter what she looks like.

“….by a nose” refers to her prosthetic nose she wore in the Hours. The nose didn’t win, she did. However if you didn’t know she was in the movie, you’d never recognise her as the nose disguised her. So doubly deserved.
I don't think it's what he meant. 2003 was very competitive between Julianne Moore for FAR FROM HEAVEN (she won all regional Critics awards), Nicole Kidman and Renée Zellweger who won all the major awards.. so it means Nicole won, but by a nose, meaning in extremis.

She was unanimously praised for FAR FROM HEAVEN. Nicole Kidman and Renée Zellwegger bagged the biggest awards (Golden Globes for both, BAFTA for Nicole, and SAG for Renée) for THE HOURS and CHICAGO... two films produced by Miramax and backed by Harvey Weinstein, who was known to be very influencal for these major awards... that's why I believed it was about the race and how Nicole won ''by a nose'' over Julianne Moore. But I could be wrong. It's just that I really remember the 2003's Oscars race.

Would've liked to see Renee playing Characters in Louise May Alcott's, Jane Austen's, Brönte Sisters', Victoria Holt's/Jane Plaidy's Novels/Stories and William Makepeace Thackeray's "Vanity Fair" anyday !!! Picture Renee working alongside Keira Knightley in "Pride & Prejudice" ? I'm surely forgetting other Authors but I've gotten somehow more familiar with these. About Denzel Washington's Charming Presence she must've forgotten she was not playing a Character in "Moulin Rouge" ? (Jul. 7 2024, Argentina)

The hours is one of the best movies I have ever seen! It is so profound! I have read the book twice and I had the pleasure and honor to attend Phillip Glass's concert at Ibirapuera park in 2017. He played the soundtrack of the Hours.
