Also, I interviewed for a photographer job where I told them I had a an associate degree in photography, and the interviewer said Photographers are a dime a dozen. Then said if she hired me I would have to start the next day. I said oh wait, I’ll have to give two weeks notice, and she says condescendingly, well that attitude may just cost you this job. I say I owe my employers the courtesy of giving them a chance to find a replacement. She calls later and offers me the job. I say no thanks. She calls 15 min later and i say nope. HER MANAGER then calls to say they really liked me, won’t I come on board. Keep in mind that 10 min in to the interview I realize it’s not really more money I’d be making, they just expect you to work 45 hours a week with no overtime pay. Told the guy to lose my number.

Got called back. 2 younger guys whose smiles never failed. Red flag 3. Told I'd be taken to a neighborhood to sell Kirby vacuum cleaners. I had to park my car in the lot, they'd take me. Leave your phone in your car. (So, you're asking me to completely isolate myself and get in your van? Usually guys like you offer candy.. lol) turns out, they take you to a neighborhood out in the boonies, tell you to go door to door, and you can't leave until you meet your sales quota. They get stuck in some state side base, then when they finally deploy are basically just stuck in babysitting duty. Even though it's just about marines, the movie Jarhead is pretty decent at depicting it from what I heard. You have people wanting to fight, that become trained killers, then you don't let them fight, the result isn't good. Tip: If you're interviewing in a kitchen (rare that they even interview but still), if they let you take a little walk around, check under the stoves and check the floor of the cooler. If they're disgusting, walk out because it'll always be that way. If the chef who's interviewing you says anything about long hours, expect 60 hour weeks. If the cigarette can is full and so is the dishpit, just walk right out because that place is stressful and nothing gets done. If any of the cooks start screaming while you're there and no one flinches, rethink working there. Just my two cents from working in a couple places.

10 years of schooling, multiple degrees, $150k in loans. I can't even get a job interview none the less pay my bills. IF you decide to go to college. Go to Community first. Classes are the same ACCREDITED courses as MIT or Harvard. 40-75% cheaper than State Tech or Agricultural colleges. My local state college is $200/credit, the community is $89. Also every 4+ year degree, no matter the specialty, requires the SAME 101's and basics. So before you decide to switch your degree a billion times or focus on a career you hate and find tedious. Get your associates. It'll allow you to put your feelers out via different classes and try some stuff while still counting towards your overall degree. Once you have that piece of paper, you can choose to go back to school at any time. If you stop halfway and don't finish. Your credits are worthless, they time out in seven years. Also if it is NOT a state-affiliated college or a Tech training school for skills + apprenticeships. Don't do what I did and listen to everyone who HAS'NT grown up with the current market. 80% of the teachers and staff I went to school with could afford a degree on a part time job in the 70's/80's.

Do research! If you haven’t heard of the company then do even more! If they can’t come up on google, get out of there, that’ll help thin out possible pyramid schemes.
Avoid places that wont tell you the hourly or gives you a “projected earnings”. Don’t be afraid to turn down jobs that won’t give you straight answers, it’s not going to get any better after that.
Retail is hell but it’s mostly stable. Customers are going to be rude, managers will put pressure on you but hopefully you can find understanding ones that aren’t brainwashed into being sadistic to employees in order to make the corporation happy.
At the end of the day, YOU are important, your time is important, and your health is important. Jobs can replace you in a heartbeat, so don’t feel like you have to sacrifice your well being in any way for one.
Customers are going to be mean and you have every right to direct them to a manager instead because you don’t have to put up with dehumanizing, painful treatment.
Just work hard with your coworkers, be reliable and helpful, and people will vouche for you and do the same in return. Every job is gonna be different, and I wish you the best of luck!
BY THE WAY, advice from my HR people is- 99% of places hate it when people come in with resumes. They have online applications for a reason and it doesn’t make a special impression like older people make it seem. Like, that whole “door to door” method of looking for jobs is a hassle for everyone involved and does not reap more interviews, usually people don’t even talk to HR when they try this and will just be told go online lol Do everything yourself- a lot of parents try to get involved and “help” their kids with jobs but it’s such a red flag for businesses not to hire. Also, do not repeatedly call and nag about when the interviews are, etc. Wait a week or two, then call to see if the position is still available or if hiring has closed.
sorry for the long reply, take care of yourself and good luck out there!!

My salary was 12 an hour and his is currently 16 an hour. Everyone there was super friendly and accepting, and the lunch room had a latte machine and it was right next to McDonald's. I was interviewing with one lady when a 2nd joined us. On my opposite side. Worst ever. They were tag teaming questions and I didn't know who to look at.
I had a job I loved. Got a new boss. Became a job a hated.
Called in sick to Dairy Queen one day. The next time I was scheduled I came in to find the manager had been fired and since I had called in sick one day I must have quit my job by the owners.
Bagged at a grocery store. The only thing i was ever told was to do something else with my hair. I always wore it in a ponytail out of my face. Came in on on Sunday, buses didn't run on Sunday then so i had to schedule a ride. Was there long enough to be told i was fired. Had to walk to the otherside of town to get home.
At 16 I was closing McDonald's 4 nights a week. Totally illegal. Needed a ride home one night. The manager didn't want to go out of her way so she dumped me in a cab and gave the cabbie some money. He turned off the meter before we got to my house because it wasn't enough to get me there but he was nice enough to drive me home anyway.
I have way too many of these I just realized.......

My current job was actually really good, the pay was competitive for the work. Someone got injured at home and went on disability; management thought they'd cut costs and we could get the work done without hiring. We lost another worker, then another. Now it starts to suck, so people quit purely because we're short staffed. The head manager bitches that no one wants to work, he's getting promoted to a different location, so he doesn't give a shit. New manager appears and spends a couple months blaming the situation on existing employees, and more people bail out. Finally management looks at the volume of work vs. man hours, and panic sets in, about 18 months too late. We hire and hire, but the new people see how bad it is and flee before we can fully staff the business. Business is actually good, and we'd be doing great, if we could actually meet demand by being fully staffed. Management tries the hype and sugar coats everything, and most of us are sick of it.

Weekend work is always a red flag in any IT-related position...
the meaning usually goes something like this:
Software: "We often set completely unrealistic deadlines for huge projects compared to the count of available developers" = you'll basically be living at the office
Hardware: "99.5% of your work is going to be any paperwork we ask for", "We are required to ensure 100% uptime" (impossible) or "We are too cheap to invest in a simple VPN solution"
Both: "Oh, and we have office golf, ping pong, yoga, massage and 'thinking rooms'" - you'll never get to use those perks and it's gonna be a shitshow of an open plan office.
Also both: "We do not understand technology".

Pretty much any job in the medical field, it's misery. Imagine that mean costumer who enjoys being rude to staff, now imagine that same person with cancer and blaming you for it. Now imagine that with a 12 hour shift with no lunch. Now imagine that but working on a holiday at midnight. midnight. Yeah... A field of misery.
Unless you're a phlebotomist at a blood bank. You take people's blood donations. These people are always well, no one donates while they're sick. Additionally, everyone is always in a good mood and are never the selfish type because most of these people genuinely want to help. Far less paperwork. Far more reward knowing each time you draw a person's blood you've help save a life. PS no one every holds a blood drive on Christmas. Lol

Ive found a great company to work for where everyone respects each other and we work hard. I started simply working with my dad helping maintenance machines in his business. When he got burnt out working for himself he decided to start working for a company, and the company was in need of experienced maintenance workers. I was supposed to be temporary since i was only 18 at the time but i worked hard and proved that i was worth being there. The company is 4 times bigger now. Now i make alot more with better hours and they pay for all of my college. I love everyone there and i watch these videos to remind me that alotta jobs out there suck and im really lucky to have one this good. I would say from my experience, learning the trades and starting young is a good way to success. Especially the trades because you dont have to go into debt from trade school and the benefits are instant. Also the most important thing, ss that tradesmen are in high demand right now, learning how to weld or do electrical and the like are so sought after that while i was learning how to weld i literally had guys from companys coming to me during classes offering jobs to everyone in class. I dont really know where im going with this or why i started this but i found alot of success working with my hands.

I spent 2 months being picky about what job I wanted, what hours I wanted to work, how the reputation was, and so forth and only got a small handful of interviews. Most of them were awful factory jobs where you get overworked because one department is unsurprisingly 2 days behind schedule. No wonder they were looking for new people.

My 5 biggest red flags are always:
    1. They are super vague with the details of the job until you start; *(Sh*t hole warning)* .
    2. They spend most of the time trying really hard to convince you to work there; *(marketing crap warning)*
    3. They constantly try to avoid talking about the pay until the last minute; *(Free or low pay warning)*
    4. They keep emphasizing growing as a team and extra duties needed for the business to prosper; *(A.K.A. Late checks, free work and/or free overtime warning)* .
    5. Focuses too much on the rules of what you cant do and how you have to act and consequences; *(Tyrant workplace Warning)*

If they start flattering you it's a huge red flag. If they tell you "I want you to see this store as your own" or say "I view my employees as partners" and other similar stuff, it means "I want you to feel morally obliged to overwork and do stuff that weren't on your job description." And don't be naive with small family businesses. Some people think these jobs are by default better than positions in chains and corporations because they are more personal or whatever. It's far from the truth. A guy may be running a literal shithole and he can still act like a fucking prime-minister and treat his employees like slaves. Also, and most importantly. As time goes buy a job may get easier since you get accustomed to it but a work environment won't get any better if it's shit. I've done this mistake in the past. Don't. If you see people acting like shit, especially higher-ups, just go, the salary ain't worth your mental health.

I agree. I worked at a family owned grocery store for about 10 years and while the actual owners were esconced in their office far away, we did have nepotism out the ass in determining who got promotions. They were even rumors that both women who were promoted essentially whored their way up. I could see it with the second woman they promoted to manager. She was trashy. She even brought in an album of pictures from her bachelorette party in one day. Naked stripper and all. She was also dumb as a rock. One guy was forced to do all departments by himself because the dumb sun-damaged bimbo let everyone else go home. He shouted her down and left. At least she was demoted. The other woman got fired when they found out she was bringing alcohol into the office building where the bigwigs worked.

I thought it was weird the first day of a new job when the general manager made a derogatory comment about me being early. Then he didn't give me anything to do. I was uncomfortable just hanging around the lobby so I went back and asked "yeah so I start working today right?" He said yes. I asked what I should do then. He said go in the shop. So I went in the shop and found the mechanic and asked him what I should do. The mechanic was like uh....are you a mechanic? I said no but I have helped in the shop lots of places I know about emptying garbage's, sweeping, organizing stuff, call me over when you need help etc. He also didn't give me any work to do. So I hung out in the shop for a bit, got told not to touch the garbage's until the end of the day, stop sweeping etc. I was like ok....so I went in to the wash bay and told the attendant it was my first day and can I wash some trucks? He was like oh um....I don't know Johnny over there is already doing it. I went back to the general manager and I was like so....what did you hire me to do? He said just relax we will let you know. So by lunch he has a job for me. He says "drive to the warehouse and get supplies" I am now excited that I feel like it isn't a mistake that I am there. I say ok where is the warehouse. He literally said "Its in Edmonton" I said ok....do you have an address. He doesn't know the address off hand. I said ok...I will look it up what is the name of it?" The shop. "I know, what is the name of it?" The shop in Edmonton don't you know where it is?" "No I don't its my first day holy shit can you give me directions?" Yeah get off on the highway and its right there" "Which exit" "Edmonton" "What one in Edmonton Can we look on googe maps? This one? This one?" I said never mind ill ask the mechanic. "Where is the shop in Edmonton" "what shop" "the GM asked me to pick up YOUR supplies in Edmonton" "No Nappa delivers that stuff" "then what am I picking up in Edmonton?" "I don't know" I ask other truck drivers "Where is the warehouse in Edmonton" I get a clue finally "You mean the pigging shop" Go back to GM "Is it the pigging shop"? YES. Back to driver "where is the pigging shop?" "I don't know never been there" By 3:00 the GM gets an address from somewhere and give it to me. I get back late and the gate is locked with my car inside the gate, and me locked out. I call GM, goes to voice mail. I don't have any other numbers. I had to take a cab home and left the truck outside the gate. The next day the GM is bitching me out about leaving the truck outside the gate. I explain It was locked and I couldn't get in, I called him and he didn't answer. He said well didn't you use the code? I said I don't know the code you didn't give me a gate code. He said well if you weren't so late getting back it wouldn't be a problem.

i couldnt honestly push a useless buy to these people, so i wished her good luck and exited the house.
my coworker was fuming. he told me that that was an already-made sell. that lady was weak and i should've exploited that.
then he proceeded to show me photos of stuff he won for being the best seller of the year several times.
i felt so disgusted i quit the same day.

When the owners are talking about how immigration standards need to be overhauled so they can get fresh workers to the table... instead of actually offering local people (or already-existing immigrants) a decent wage. Seems pretty common in the food industry in larger cities here in Canada atm, and I'm not just talking about fast food, I mean upscale restaurants with owners opening multiple locations, but they don't want to pay people jack (not even the cooks), and then complain about a lack of interest in their jobs.

Don't work as a newspaper carrier. You get paid 9 cents a paper, have to come in around 1-2 in the morning to get the papers you'll be throwing, half the time the truck is late so you'll be standing around looking stupid for half an hour (every once in a great while the presses will break or such, at which point you'll be waiting SEVERAL hours) And then you have to be done by a certain time. Previously for us this was 6 o'clock, but has been moved to 6:30 recently because they SHUT DOWN THE WAREHOUSE IN OUR CITY AND MAKE US DRIVE TO THE NEXT CITY OVER TO GET OUR PAPERS.What was previously a 30 minute round trip to obtain the materials to do our job is now a hour and a half long slog when everything goes right. The reason the company did this? They didn't want to pay 1000 dollars in rent for a warehouse. Half the staff of our district quit immediately after this, leaving our poor manager at the time to deliver several THOUSAND papers himself, which has only been semi fixed to this day (this went down a year ago now)In addition, you don't have sick days. Not PAID sick days. You don't have sick days. The company has tried to get me to continue delivering despite requiring EMERGENCY SURGERY before. And naturally, you work literally every day, forever. Holidays are the worst thing. Thanksgiving is the worst because thats when they load every paper to 4-5 pounds for Black Friday deals (guess what day they consistently choose to make major changes on. Take a wild guess.) and you deliver to everyone cuz holiday, plus the presses are guaranteed to break sometime during that week because they put FOUR TO FIVE POUNDS OF PAPER THROUGH THEM.Had a Blizzard on Thanksgiving a few years back. Got actual death threats from customers because we were late.So yeah, two things there. Don't believe the mailmen's lying song, WE get the shitty weather. They don't come out till all the snow's been plowed, we have to drive through it if we expect to not be penalized. And second thing, customers HATE you. You get a few on every route who are nice and some even tip on holidays, but 90% of them are cranky old women who have nothing else left to live for except reading this musty old newspaper, and basically consider you magic pixies and GOD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR PIXIE BUTT IF YOU ARE LATE, FOR MRS. ANDERSON HAS NONE.Complicating this is that the company will blame you for anything they screw up, while lying to your customers that the frequent rate increases are to pay YOU more.Oh forgot to mention how customer complaints work. See y'know how you get 9 cents per paper? (32 on Sunday and Thanksgiving, which reminds me that until a few years ago they DIDN'T give the Sunday rate for Thanksgiving) well when a customer complains for literally any reason, whether because you forgot them, you were late, or just that their alzheimers is acting up and they think its tomorrow already? You don't just lose the 9/32 cents. Oh no. You lose several times what the paper is worth. $3 on Sunday, forget the rate for dailies offhand. So yeah.
Never work as a paper carrier.

My first interview was at a Kohl's and I was supposed to meet the manager for the position, but apparently, she never came to work as it was her day off, so I was waiting by the front door sitting at a desk just staring at the wall for over an hour. when the assistant manager finally came to get me for the interview she took me to the manager's office and started the interview. sort of. She mostly talked about how she did all the work there and how she was looking for a better job and how everyone hates the manager and they are all trying to get her fired and how the head of security put a mic in her office (the one I was currently in) to catch her doing something illegal and eventually she started crying and telling me how hard her life is. I was suitably freaked out. Eventually, the interview ended and she walked me out. On our way out she told me I would hear back from them in a week and if not then she got fired and I should call and try again. I never got a call, and I am pretty happy about that since if I did I would have taken the job because I was pretty desperate.

The funny thing is, in my previous job i had over 200 people under me. Not trying to brag or anything, but imagining someone with such experiences would fall for such a trick seems a bit desperate...

I worked for Vector Marketing. 2001.
They make their money by soliciting fresh outta high school kids to "purchase their own showcase knife set" to show customers.
    1. That's a guaranteed sale.
    2. If the kid sells ANY knives at a higher price = party bonus!
