  • Helen's been part of the Sad Ghost Club for a long time now and felt it was important to discuss the themes and ideas brought up by the series 13 Reasons Why, having struggled with her mental health herself.
In this video Lize talks to Helen about her teenage years and how it felt feeling so low during this period, and possible ways to help. They briefly discuss things they would've done differently and ways to help those you know who might be struggling. Things get a little personal and they touch on subjects that might not be suitable for all viewers, but we've tried to keep everything as viewer friendly as possible!

Depression can really take someone down without support, so important to recognise and help provide support to those suffering depression or mental health difficulties

Thank you both so much for this. I was diagnosed with depression in January this year (I'm 27 and have been struggling for the last 3 years since uni). During this time I was also diagnosed with anxiety.
I kept it all to myself for years, and can't stress enough how important it is to be brave and talk to someone you trust, no matter how afraid you are. It really helps.
Helen, I'm in the same position as you-I'm two weeks away from my last shift in retail, and I really want to pursue with my illustration career. You've really inspired me to decide to start my own illustration business and not give up on my dream of being an illustrator. (edited after re-watching as I missed some info! Many thanks, girls :)

    Hello!
I am a 26 yr old freelance artist and found this video supper relatable. I couldn't say anything about feelings to my parents as an only child growing up it felt like if I told them how I felt it was the equivalent of calling them failures. My mum to this day can't say words to do with periods, depression, feelings she just calls everything 'thingy'. I run an art shop and sometimes I can't leave the house through anxiety. Which means I can't run my business that day. I feel guilty and that's when the self loathing kicks in. I def had a roller coaster of emotions as a teenager that hasn't left me and I still don't feel normal most days but I agree with taking the steps to become so motivated you don't want to stop! I also know I can be lazy so when a depressive episode kicks in I think people will put it down to my lazy tendencies and nothing more.
Anyway, I enjoy these videos it's good to hear others stories. Thanks for making them! :)

Hello! Im sorry you suffer so much with your anxiety, Im an artist, 22 here and sometimes I feel so lost with what I feel, reality is so hard and searching for inspo sometimes it's hard, don't you feel that way sometimes? but all we can do is keep drawing, no matter if you think if your art is ugly or lack of originality, the important thing is you like it

I agree with you guys so much, young me at age 13-17 would be so blown away by who I am now at 21 and what I've accomplished that it really gives me motivation when I think of what future me would seem like to current me. :') Like, if I've been able to get THIS far (and get THIS much cooler hahaha) future me must be even more awesome, and I should probably stick around to see her.
