  • If you spend a lot of time in a body shop, chances are great that, at some point in time, you’ve encountered a bumper cover with a long tear. Damage like this may even be forked in several different directions, leading many technicians to consider it to be “beyond repair”. In reality, this is the kind of repair that technicians will look forward to repairing with the help of Polyvance's nitrogen plastic welder and other plastic repair tools.

    I used to try and fix stuff like this but now I just order a new bumper cover. a new cover is usually around 100-200 bucks and
    I can get it shipped to me free in 2-3 days, ready to paint. I still fix small cracks, but long or multi directional cracks, I am time and money ahead to just get a new cover.

      you always need to compare the cost to repair vs new. For cheap bumpers like the ones you have, that may be the better option in some cases, but other are so expensive you could spend a week repairing them and still be ahead of the game.

    Another great video... I thought for sure you were going to use the stainless steel mesh. But I guess you want to keep the flex and rigidity of the bumper. Great fuzz/torch method. I use to go crazy trying to sand them out.

      The stainless steel mesh is really meant to be used with the FiberFlex welding rod. It is best in situations where the plastic is too thin to use the nitrogen welder, when you just want a little extra strength in the repair, or if you don't have a nitrogen welder and you just have the FiberFlex universal rod. It is best to use the nitrogen welder and the matching welding rod when possible. By using the rod that matches the bumper plastic, you get a fusion weld where the bumper and rod become one.

    How long did it actually take John to fix it?

    Nice repair lads.
    I am from the U.K. And have just had a demo on a nitrogen welder, it generates its own nitrogen so no bottle is required, very nice bit of kit.
    I have watched a lot of your videos, one thing puzzles me, why must one v groove the rear side of the repair ?
    I can see the point of v grooving the front side.

      Thanks for watching, Nick!
      V-grooving on both sides ensures that the plastic is rough enough for optimal fusion on both the front and the back. Not to mention that if after you weld the front you V-groove the back, you will grind down to the plastic you've just added. This will allow the plastic to fuse with both the original plastic that you were repairing and the plastic you've added to the front side.

    • @polyvance
      @polyvance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. With Polyvance nitrogen plastic welders, you have the ability to adjust both the temperature and the flow.

    That nitrogen welder is like $1000. When using the plastic tubes what other thing can I use to melt it? Or can I use the flat hot iron it supplies in the kit to melt the tube into the bumper?

    • @polyvance
      @polyvance  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. Yes, our nitrogen welders are more expensive because they are mostly for body shop use. We do have a hot air welder kit for $285.95 (www.polyvance.com/Hot-Air-Welders-1/6055/) and the Mini-Weld Model 7 airless plastic welder for $309.95 (www.polyvance.com/Airless-Welders-1/5700HT/).

      A good quality plastic weld can also be done with a 5700HT Airless Plastic Welder from Polyvance. Its not quite as good as a nitrogen welder, but for the DIYer or small shop, its an excellent tool. Its just slower and needs a little reinforcement to make the welds as strong as the nitrogen weld.

    isnt adhesion promotor already a primer thus requiring no additional primer?

    • @polyvance
      @polyvance  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Adhesion promoter isn't actually a primer, it's just an agent that helps paints and primers adhere to plastics like Polypropylene.

    why don't remove the staps using the stapler?

    • @scottb7600
      @scottb7600 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mostly because it is extra work, but you could once the weld is mostly done.

    First off bumpers do not match cars. You have developed these products to save insurance companies money. Well they also save money by not blending a car for bumpers..Secondly just as your tools are expensive to save these parts we have expensive cameras to match paint so that we can match colors.

      We're sorry you feel that way, Bruce. We can assure you that our products are designed with everyone in the collision repair industry in mind. Regarding the price of our products, you get what you pay for, then you make it back very, very quickly. We'd be more than happy to discuss with you sometime the economics of why our products make sense.

      This repair can easily be done in that time, not including paint, but you'd have to do that anyway.
