my 2000 Corolla needed help at 275K miles with rough idle and poor acceleration. The real fix was to replace the intake manifold gasket. I got new coils, injectors and plugs installed ... but the real problem was the air leak at the gasket. Tedious and not for most guys, but simple to do and a 'mobile mechanic' can put in your part much cheaper than a garage... If the problem 'returns' ... it is a new problem. Do NOT assume you know what it is. Use a DTC code to indicate what the ECM detected as a 'possible'. Months after a new intake manifold gasket and new plugs, I got the hesitation and poor performance on inclines. The DTC was for a possible miss on cylinder 1, so I swapped the coil on 1 nd 2 and the 'problem' went to #2. A new coil immediately resolved the problem. Install it when the engine is cooled off and use a Q-tip to put a very light swipe of dielectric grease just inside the end of the coil and a light coat on the white ceramic of the plug. See 'dielectric grease use'.

Don't use anti seize on these plugs. NGK says if a thread lubricant is coated on the thread, tightening to the recommended torque is tightening too much; this has been linked to seal leakage.

Toyota must juggle their fueling configurations. My Corolla is a 1999, made in Canada. Same engine (judging by the very distinctive intake manifold). Has a coil block instead of separate plug coils.
Has intermittent hesitation and sometimes wont do more than idle, yet most of the time runs perfectly. There is no MAF, instead there is a MAP sensor on the throttle body (manifold absolute pressure.. basically a barometer transducer). I replaced this (most expensive little bit of plastic I have ever bought) and that has made no difference. No DTC codes. I am stymied.

Also check your valve cover gasket. If it is old, cracks can form and there are seals around the spark plugs with that valve cover gasket. So you might change spark plugs frequently but root cause could also be valve cover gasket which allows oil to leak into the spark plugs and burning them out.

I've found it's extremely difficult to select parts for it because every seller, including Amazon, assumes that all 1999 Corollas have the VVT-I engine. So, I buy a new MAF sensor and not only is it the wrong one but it's in a different place on the engine. I'm still not sure where it is. I order an air cleaner for a '99 Corolla and it doesn't fit mine. MIne doesn't have one coil per plug, it has plug wires to two dual spark coils located at the end of the head.
Even here on TH-cam, if I search for 1999 Corolla, every video shows the VVT-I engine. Haha.
Anyway, how do I specify this car/engine so I get the right parts? As far as I can tell, there's no way to specify it on Amazon.

Don’t buy off Amazon or eBay etc cause more likely then not you’ll get cheap garbage counterfeits.

@@dw4940 The same problem happens at AutoZone. The solution is to specify 1998 when buying engine parts. 😆

Help, anyone. 1997 Corolla run & dies randomly on the road at lights, stop & not hitting the gas.
What is the likely failure (s)?
    Has no Check Engine.
    Has no codes.
    Fuel Filter brand new
    Fuel Pump brand new
Throttle cleaned & three hoses replaced
Complete Timing Belt Kit, Spark Plugs, Spark Plug Inlets, Valve Cover Gasket replaced 8 months ago
Again, still not safe for a senior (pastor)driving. Any suggestions?

@@AirplaneFreak , wish it was the IAC Valve.
Idle Air Control Valve removed & cleaned.
3 Hoses connected to IAC Valve were replaced.
      MAP Sensor cleaned.
Also, exchanged with known good parts from another car (saved parts long ago).
      No luck.

Swapped 4 spark plug cables (4 brand new spark plugs) replaced during the complete timing belt kit replacement, 8 months ago.
Swapped distributor & rotor from a know good car. Just as a test. Then took all out to be placed back to the donor car.
Still car run in park no problem.
      Battery tested = 12.4VDC
Battery with engine on = 12.8+VDC (reading on donor, 96, car was about the same). No donor now.
Just dies randomly once on the road, either in 5 or 45 minutes.

@@angelisone Then here is where it gets fun. Perhaps there is a problem with the wiring or the ECM. Or maybe you got a bad alternator. Even if the alternator looks and sounds good, it could still be going bad. Or if it was reman, it wasn't remaned right. I'd go with the dealer's Nippon Denso one and make sure it is one that is reman recently since I got a reman from the dealer for my 1998 which initially made a horrendous noise and then whined like crazy but now it's gone since I got it replaced under warranty from the dealer with a unit reman in Japan.
