I cover this song solo. Such a simple, yet evocative song. With the large band here, it becomes ethereal. The Cello providing velvet to the mix, and the Steel like teardrops falling from the sky. A perfect backdrop for Lyle to tell his sweet little tale.
He is just THE best !! Just thinking about friends who loved Lyle and are no longer with us, they ran into him one day at an Ice Cream shop I think in Columbus Ohio. Back then I had a phone on my desk and they just called and screamed "We met Lyle Lovett" He was getting Ice Cream or something. I'll never forget that day.
One of the many things that amaze me about Lyle Lovett is the perfect clarity and cleanliness of the instruments/overall sound. It's always so perfectly captured, polished, and presented every time. With that said, reproducing and executing this same perfect clarity live; puts Lyle Lovett and his band/sound crew in a class of their own.

That man is one of my countless inspirations.
i listen to this on the bridge of my yacht with a smooth whisky and cigar, watching the sunset
And then you woke up?

That was Gloria's favorite song by Lyle. She would play it in the car, over and over.

Perhaps the best audio version of this song A smile for sure.
Lyle makes me smile. And swing. It's not big, it's large.

Oh they are in a class of their own!!!!
I was thinking somewhat the same thing. This is really on the level of what's called classical chamber music.
If I had a boat - Tulku Lyle lyrics…
So, boat is the vehicle, self-only or big-boat, Mahayana, take every sentient being,
but really the ocean of consciousness is called samsara (shamsara?). Pony refers to our ‘windhorse’. Your mind mounted upon the supreme winds, energies flowing in your created channels.
And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
I said me upon my pony on my boat
If I were Roy Rogers
I'd sure enough be single
I couldn't bring myself to marrying old Dale
It'd just be me and Trigger
We'd go ridin' through them movies
Then we'd buy a boat and on the sea we'd sail
And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
I said me upon my pony on my boat
Now the mystery masked man was smart
He got himself a Tonto
'Cause Tonto did the dirty work for free
But Tonto he was smarter
And one day said kemo sabe
Kiss my ass I bought a boat
I'm going out to sea
And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat
And if I were like lightning
I wouldn't need no sneakers
Well I'd come and go whenever I would please
And I'd scare 'em by the shade tree
And I'd scare 'em by the light pole
But I would not scare my pony on my boat out on the sea
And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
I said me upon my pony on my boat,
I said me upon my pony on my boat

Amazing.
I used to haul Ponies on a flat bed. Peta people made me stop, They said "nailing their hooves to the deck is not nice".😆
As excellent as the rest of the playing is here, that pedal steel playing just shines above it all. Perfection!
Agreed! The pedal steel work is remarkably good.
'ethereal steel playing
This CD 'lives' in my player in my car!
So underrated
Kiss my ass, I bought a boat; I'm going out to sea!
