    If you throw the bunny at Lambert, he will pick it up, cradle it in his arms, and stare at it for a while. After a few moments, he runs away with it, but drops it on the way. You can pick up the bunny and do it over and over as an evasion technique. It's all quite heartbreaking, really.

      I felt like this when watching John play RE4 remake. Then when I played it myself, it was much easier to understand where everything was. I think it's because you aren't playing the game. If you were, you might be able to remember where stuff is easier.

    • @badwulff
      @badwulff ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@L2Lipread Yes, and one relevant point is that with video editing, the viewer might not grasp the layout as easily because trekking through areas is cut out, so it becomes harder to remember how everything juxtaposes. By the end of John's playthrough, I pretty much knew by heart the area around the administration without having played the game myself, but beyond that it was all fairly mysterious

    What I love more than anything else, and it's the same thing I love about the first Resident Evil game, is how all this horror is contained in an intimate space, but the world outside goes on completely oblivious to it. I love how you have completely forgotten about the war, as if you've fallen into another world altogether, until you go into the pillbox and a German sniper, who thinks he's just seen a French soldier peek up for look, takes a potshot at you. Like John said, it's very much a sidestory, and I think a sidestory works for horror a lot better than a big grandiose concept because, for you, it's this horrible isolating torturous experience, but for everyone outside that intimate space it's just another day. Imagine how creepy a concept that actually is, like imagine you look out the window before going to bed at a store or an apartment building, and inside that building everyone is being slaughtered by a monster and are struggling to stay alive, while you and the rest of the world have no idea it's happening so you just glance out the window mindlessly and then look forward to sleeping in tomorrow on your day off. It's really chilling; I love it.

      @@Asaylum117 Even then though, it never goes beyond a city. The rest of the world goes on, and everyone outside Raccoon City doesn't really even know what's happening until it's too late. RE never goes the global apocalypse route, and that's what makes all the adaptations bad in my books is they do go global apocalypse each and every time. The world being fucked and the heroes just meandering pointlessly forward with no end in sight just isn't interesting.

    i don't know if this is a 'criticism' exactly, but one thing this game made me realize is just how character-driven the dark descent is. we learn so much about daniel throughout the story. i mean, the gameplay itself is shaped around his personality (i.e., he's cowardly and scared of the dark). even the little snippets of text in loading sceens give us further insight into his life. i really miss that! not just here but in games generally.
    that said, i think more focus on the main character in this game actually would've been distracting (it didn't work well in rebirth, for me). overall, this was a great experience :)

    I think the collision detection for the tripwires is actually good enough that the monster can just walk over them. But I know it can still trigger them by walking IN to them because I've seen it do that before.

    • @GSIndonesia
      @GSIndonesia ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The monster actually triggered it. If you heard it carefully, you could hear the explosive. Theres just a delay between after he tripped it until it exploded which explain why it looked like the trap didnt get triggered on John PoV

    I plan to get this one as soon as possible. The Bunker really sold me on the visuals and monster design, especially the oppressive atmosphere and sound design. Frictional Games really wanted this one to be a step in the right direction, and it shows.

    From a lore perspective, i think that last chamber WAS the chamber from The Dark Decent, which took place a century earlier if i recall. As he exits it becomes more European architecture instead of Roman. Could just be a nod to The Dark Decent as a interesting easter egg but id like the idea that these Amnesia games are all a part of the same world.

  • @FourthStar

    I had a great time watching this!
    Just as you said, I really appreciate how the game didn't drag on unnecessarily; it took the time it needed to generate a horror atmosphere and let the story/background progress, and then ended.
    The fact that, after all that surviving, you're thrown straight into another type of hell is the grim cherry on top.
    Can't wait to see what the community comes up with in their custom stories!

    So good! I know you said it was kinda losing it's effectiveness the longer the game goes one, but the moments with the monster chasing you stayed super tense for me throughout the whole game, super freaky! And watching you crank the flashlight while the monster was still roaming around made me so anxious every time, haha. Also, the constant battle between you and the rats was hilarious, if you do decide to replay the game, I hope you manage to get all those dirty lil rats XD

  • @Nexils
    @Nexils ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I like how they brought back the siren whenever a monster spots you and gives chase. Meanwhile I like how my German is good enough that I can understand the NPCs (although this prisoner is extremely loud for someone who's aware that there's a monster).
    The game is short, but I think it's nice and simple and therefore focused and I that. The ending you got does kinda feel like an anti-climax and quite abrupt, but it feels brutally realistic, so it's fine.
    I think what makes this game stand out a little is because it does not have the orb in it, which three other games had. But I did like this monster's design a lot more compared to Machine for Pigs and Rebirth.

    I would love to know if John’s sense of direction is actually as keen as it is in games. Like is he that dude on road trips that goes “no no we can’t go this way, but the road splits there remember? Love the playthrough, the game, and John's thoughts at the end! In addition to everything else he said at the end, some of the writing for the notes were quite good. The notes in the first video were interesting and some of them pretty unnerving (specifically the one first describing the dreams that made the writer ecstatic during the dream and then wake up horrified, and the one describing the men getting paranoid hearing sounds in the tunnels). I just wanted to give my props on that because notes like that can fall kinda flat, especially ones trying to be spooky. (Also I'm glad Henri's big dark secret he felt ashamed of wasn't especially evil, just survivor's guilt. I was worried we were getting another Bad Dad Simulator type deal where he sacrificed his friend's life for Lambert to be turned into a monster instead of him or something. Sympathy for characters in a tragic, horrifying situation makes a game/story so much more engaging and I'm glad all the characters stayed basically sympathetic.)

    I love how different people play it differently. It's probably also due to randomize items. But I watched Gab and she spent most of her time crawling around slowly and quietly, she pretty much stopped using the generator. John runs around, making all the noise and exploding things. I enjoyed both playthoughs, but it's interesting to see that. I'm off to watch Markiplier's now, which will probably be a lot of chaos and yelling :D.

    Not finished with the video yet, but I'm still going to leave a thought about the game. It would be kinda cool if you could help the German soldier and team up? Like, yes, your character and the prisoner are enemies, but in this setting, being stalked by a monster, enemies can become allies to survive. I guess I feel sorry for the guy, hearing (and understanding) him scream like that.

    Amnesia is using Alien Isolation's gameplay element, but then again, the recent alien game are using the amnesia's old title "Aliens: Dark Descent". Coincidence? All dialogue from the prisoner I think
    “Hello? Is someone there?”
    “Leave me alone…”

    “I can hear it!”
    “Close it again!”
    “Please, please!”
    “It’s coming!”
    “No! No! Leave it!”
    “I don’t want to die like this!”
    ….
    “God in heaven!”
    “The devil!”
    “I’m just a soldier… that is all”
    “In hell… in hell…”
    “I do not know anything”

    i definitely noticed you taking your time with this game and i appreciated it. before you uploaded your first video i tried to watch a playthorugh with another youtuber i usually like but they just raced through it, i needed time to settle in a bit. this game definitely reminded me of amnesia: the dark descent in the best ways, and i liked how it was short. i hope frictional does more of this atmospheric, contained horror. they work best with those constraints--both rebirth and machine of pigs had the character running around with more room to explore, and those are the weakest games in the series. not that open space is bad for horror, but maybe it's just not how frictional works best. also, i thought penumbra was just the one game! will be starting a play through of black plague/blood plauge (can't remember hahha) now!

    Man, what a phenomenal game to watch and what a great playthrough! I know you said that ppl might be upset that you're playing for more of an "atmospheric" vibe but as a viewer who hasn't watched anyone else play it yet, I think that made it sooo much better. I was extremely invested in the story, in these characters, and super scared when you made brave decisions that I would never be able to make, haha! 😆
    You pretty much summed up all my thoughts on this game. I think Frictional Games knocked this one out of the park cuz man, I haven't felt this scared in a while! 😆 So happy to see them going back to their roots. I also absolutely agree that the game being "short" is awesome if the experience was great.

    This definitely seemed the most like Dark Descent out of the "sequels" (if you even include Machine for Pigs, I actually like that game so go figure). I was expecting a more "epic" ending, not necessarily like Rebirth, but at least something like in DD where you get to see a little hint of the "other realm". I do appreciate the vagueness here though- my biggest complaint with Rebirth was that they went too hard with introducing/exploring the other realm.
