    Take a 10d nail, clip the head off it, chuck it in the drill and run it at the press’s top rpms in the punch until the blade heats up red hot. Let it cool, the blade will be annealed and soft enough to drill with a standard bit.

    I like your method to drill hardened steel.
    You can also spot anneal/soften hardened metal with a propane torch.
    The trick is to let it cool slowly.

    Very nice blade. I have made a few Ulus using circular saw blades. My favorite Ulu is made from an old 12" blade from my compound miter saw. I use Cobalt bits to dril the rivet holes but that masonry bit resharpen is a freat tip.

  • @RyeOnHam
    @RyeOnHam 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Having used an Ulu, I think your take is an interesting one. However, it defeats a few of the Ulu's advantages. First, an Ulu with the shank coming from the center of the blade allows you to REST your blade between the middle and ring fingers while you are pulling the skin back or for other tasks. Lived in Alaska for a Decade and the Natives would make these out of old saw blades wherever they could be found. They did not drill holes, the handle was a piece of antler (or occasionally bone) with a slot cut in it. When I used to make them, I cut the slot by drilling two holes diagonal from the side of the antler so they intersected about in the middle. Then tilt the drill bit side to side till the holes met. I'd follow it up with a small rat-tail file. Rough the surface up and epoxy it in then grind the exposed portion of the shank down flush with the antler and polish.
    There were variations where I was that had two shanks and a slot in the middle but those were uncomfortable to use. I think they sold those to the tourists. The ones I saw in use and used myself all had a single, thin shank.
