One time thrifting in San Fransisco I found a vintage red Stanford crewneck, bought it and immediately wore it while puttering around others stores. I was quickly approached by an older woman who, with her hand outstretched to me (imagine a queen waiting for her rings to be kissed), told me she was “an old oak” and started talking about when she attended Stanford. She rambled on for 15 min until I finally was like “yeah idk I literally just thrifted this for like 25 bucks” and…the look on her face was, priceless 😅
First off... Happy Birthday! 🎈 Secondly...this video brought me so much joy. I have always wanted to visit SF but lately all content shows it being a distopian nightmare. I'm so happy to see that a few magical spots remain. A visit is back on my bucket list. Thirdly...as a 60 y/o woman it gives me such a giggle to see you delight in the things I wore in my youth. I really wish I held into my Swatch watches, one was leopard print. Lastly..the chances for reading for me lately are few and far between but I hope to start "Dune" soon. I work with a fella who says it is his favorite book. I didn't tell him that I plan to read it, I didn't go to college and fear SciFi books may be to high level for me, but if I can get through the first five chapters I will talk to him about it. Wish me luck! 🍀
Noone needs a college education to read sci fi - I hope you surprise yourself and love it. From a 59 yo who never had a Swatch but did rock some shoulder pads in her early working wardrobe.
SF is not a dystopian nightmare! It suffers the same problems all large cities currently are -- a housing crisis paired with a refusal to prioritize care for the most vulnerable among us. Therefore, there are people suffering in large quantities out in the open. Fearmongering media wants you to believe that is a unique problem to SF or any other city, but it's not. It's the inevitable result of the systems we have in place in this country. I hope you visit SF, it is still beautiful and I never feel unsafe there.
You sound like a fabulous woman with a brilliant attitude that will love SF. Please come visit. As a resident for the past 17 yrs, this video is the best representation of my daily environment that I’ve seen in a while. I’m fine with the media underestimating us, it leaves more space at Dolores park 🌈
Oh my gosh i was hoping the shirt you were wearing at the end was the merch!!! We love a metal font round here!! I just got an Edward Cullen tattoo, him holding his nose when Bella walks in, you know the scene, with STINKY in metal font under!!! It's what 16 year old me would have wanted, and it makes me laugh every time i look at it!!
i was trying to write "as a russian" annnd my computer was in cyrilic. so. anyways, can confirm, the vennik can be a little weird for first timers but i swear to god it cured my midterms stress last year lmao anyways, no idea how it is in san fransisco, and i'd love to go!!
i just want you to know that my little treat after therapy each week is getting some take out and watching one (or a couple) of your videos to help me calm down and restabilize. thank you for being comfy and safe!
I found your videos less than a week ago, I'm pretty sure, but you have quickly become my favorite person to watch. Absolute cozy comfort content, like hanging out with a super fun, crafty, fashionable friend. Your videos are good to watch before bed to relax and get sleepy, right when I wake up to start the day in a fun mood, and literally any other time😭💖 There's so much pointless and upsetting content online and social media these days that I've been avoiding like the plague because it does nothing but make you not feel good :( But your videos have such a good energy and I just wanted to say thank you because they've really helped me keep my head up and have a good attitude about things. As someone with Bipolar 2, (and various other mental diagnoses💀lol) having a consistent positive attitude and consistently getting out of bed and participating in life is not my strong suit... yet. But avoiding pretty much all social media apps, as well as all youtube content that doesn't serve me emotionally or in an educational sense, has been such a game changer. And I'm so glad I found your channel because it has contributed to my recent growth and success already just in a matter of days. (and if you have any other channels you personally like to watch, with similar vibes and/or content I would love to know so I can continue purging my subscriptions and suggested page of any content that doesn't serve me in the same positive way and replacing it with content like yours💙) Also right now I am reading Circe by Madeline Miller. About 2/3 of the way through. And 10/10 would recommend if you haven't read already. Her writing is beautiful but not too frilly or excessive as some beautiful writing can be. And that makes it even more of a page-turner, because you will not find yourself getting tired of reading. I was worried I wasn't going to know enough about Greek mythology and that I may get confused or overwhelmed, but that's not the case at all. She sticks to mostly the big and iconic names and stories that are well known by most people, and when she strays from that, it's okay because she spells everything out for you lol. So no reader would be in the dark, regardless of their Greek mythology knowledge. I've been describing it to others as almost the Forrest Gump of Greek Mythology. Before I had started it, the name Circe was certainly familiar but I couldn't have told you the slightest thing about her or her mythology. But as you read, you learn she was SO intertwined in the legends of many iconic greek mythology monsters and characters. It's so exciting to let it all slowly unfold. And another thing about her writing and portrayal of Circe in general, Madeline Miller makes it very easy to empathize and connect with Circe. I love a book that makes you feel like you're right there with the characters experiencing and feeling just as they are, and that's exactly how I've come to feel about Circe while reading this book. In fact it'd be nearly impossible to read this book and not almost immediately connect with Circe. She now holds a real place in my heart, genuinely. Anyways, I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day, to Kathleen or whoever else may be reading this💛
Thanks for your well-wishes and for the book review! I hope that you find moments of peace and joy and overall have a lovely day, week, month, season, etc…wishing you the best as you manage the challenges you face!
I had those exact lanterns in my first apartment with my man, after college! I believe they got trashed after a few years of being moved around. But they were so cute! I hope you love them. 🙂 And, I love the cat coming back into the store. LOL I literally laughed and scared my own cat. ha!
13:01 I love those kid conversations! And I learned last year that, contrary to what I had learned my whole life, our blood is not actually blue. It’s all red. Maybe more bright red when freshly oxygenated, but all red. Some of it looks blue on the surface of our skin because of how the light reflects or something. It’s still hard for me to believe, honestly, but trying to stay true to evidence, even when it conflicts with long-held beliefs about how the world works!
The lanterns are used as decoration during the Mid Autumn festival (also known as Mooncake festival) which is a Chinese culture, celebrated during the night of a full moon. It usually falls in September/October. Children will also carry them around during the night by holding on to a wooden stick attached to the lantern. The one you got is the traditional version that uses a candle. More modern version are battery operated with lights and music but I still like the traditional version :)
@@KathleenIllustratedyehh I came here to say that too 😊 They’re supposed to come with a thin metal rod that keeps the lantern extended. They also come in different cool shapes, you can probably find them for cheap in any Chinatown shops. Also have you been to isso? You were so close to there! They have a good collection of clothes and accessories. I really like them.
HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Funny coincidence - when my job was cut short in Silicon Valley in Feb 2020 due to what was happening, I drove to SF to see my girlfriend at one of the coolest little restaurants where she was a bartender. It was absolutely packed. I had the most amazing meal and cocktails, spent the night with her in Russian Hill, and then skedaddled back home to LA only to learn that would be my last dinner out. It really is a magical city :) Also, that's right cat, you own that joint!
Although I am bummed on your behalf that those places were closed, thank you for showing that not all went to plan. I think with social media it is easy to think that everyone’s trips go super smoothly.
Kathleen!!! I _ran_ here to comment when I tried it on, but I just bought a slightly oversized tee from ebay because I loved the back graphic. So it just arrived and I tried wearing it backwards to better display the graphic I love... it looks just like the high neckline on the Stray Kids member's tee! I highly recommend trying out wearing a tee you already like, but backwards, and see if that gives you the look you're going for!
YAY happy birthday Kathleen!!! In my heart of hearts I was secretly hoping you were going to launch your clip-on earring line but this is just as exciting! I can't wait for next week :D
I used to live by Valencia St and Community Thrift was my favorite ❤ I also don’t remember ever seeing that tea shop open, but that may have been early pandemic related. Made me so happy to see you go to some familiar places! That heatwave was no joke but what a gorgeous day!
Oh, how I miss Community Thrift and rummaging through Afterlife's Birkenstock bucket! Thanks for the Valencia Street nostalgia! Looking forward to the shirt drop!
I've only been to SF twice. My cousin and his family are there. It's a long way from my little town in rural Australia. I've only been thrifting once in SF, on Mission St. We found several good buys including my winter snow coat. That was a great investment, which I also wore back home.
i’m currently in floor troll mode painting blue diamonds onto a thrifted and overdyed blazer for my howl pendragon halloween coat WHILE watching your video?? name a better tuesday
I found your channel recently and I LOVE it. I’ve watched everything you’ve posted in the last year-and-a-half. You have such great energy and your content is so engaging. Thank you for what you offer the internet.
I have those exact same lanterns! My mum got them as a kid and then put them up in my room. Maybe they were mass produced, but in my heart I'd love the coincidence of finding the same vintage lanterns an ocean apart :)
So excited for next week's video. I've been wondering about the concept of using second-hand items for merch. Looking forward to seeing how it worked out 😁
okay i'm so glad you got that black shirt with the colorful buttons!! the second you put it on i was like oh that's sooo you. and yay for Han influencing your fashion choices hehe. also i nearly panicked when you got in that self-driving car... didn't realize i had such strong feelings about that omg. we really are in the future 😱
I just found your channel and looveeee your videos. You have such a vibe where your videos feel so claiming and like I'm just listening to you ramble to me in person on a couch, lol.
I recently finished the audiobook for A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum. It was extremely good. She is a Palestinian novelist and I have a hard time reading things that aren't stories, but I want to learn more about Palestinian culture. Hence Palestinian novels. I have more Palestinian novels on my list and this one was super good. It was a kinda sad contemporary fiction novel that's mostly just people living their lives and I love those.
i woke up from a post-birthday reset nap (happy birthday again twin !) to this video being posted and it was just what i needed :) - im currently reading a comfort book of mine called The Chronicles of Narmo
i was born and raised in sf, moved about 3 years ago. i used to work at the banya, absolutely a hidden gem of the city! so weird to see how valencia's changed just since i moved. long life the SFC
I haven't watched this yet because I jumped into the comments to say "I'M IN SAN FRANCISCO!". How perfect! I thrifted in the Mission District and wanted to maybe go somewhere else before I leave on Wednesday, so I'll probably check out at least one of your recs! Edit: So I only went to Community Thrift later in the day and got back on the tram for another event. Guess I'll have to go back and check out the rest!
the Mission is my home my love my jam. currently not in CA but last time i was in SF i went to NO and found a Diane von Furstenberg dress with a Moulin Rouge patterned top. also got to pet a very elderly dog who sighed so sweetly.
About 15-16 years ago, while I was in San Francisco with my family. We went to China town, and my parents bought me those paper lanterns in pink, orange, and yellow. I still have them to this day.
I love your SF videos! I grew up in the East Bay and live here again and it makes my heart so happy to see someone enjoying the city. Archimedes Banya is very cool. It's mixed gender and 95% of all people are buck naked so be warned! I personally like being able to go with friends of diff genders so it's a plus for me. Pro-tips: 1. It's free on your birthday, so if you happen to be in SF on your birthday, just show your ID, 2. there is usually a groupon for first timers! Helps bring the cost down. 3. Get slapped by the oak leaves! It's very relaxing. If you prefer an all women's sauna/spa, I recommend Pearl Spa, in Japantown. FYI they close a lot earlier, but I go with my women friends sometimes and it's really nice. If you go here, get the scrub!
Bummer about the stores being closed, but those doggies at the park were precious! i'm currently reading Model Home by Rivers Solomon and it's really my style.
I just realized, when I say you Apple Watch, I’d be interested in seeing your tech set up, like your phone / apps / Apple Watch… and your relationship with it all! Love your vids, sis. Keep going!
Yay! We’re birthday twins! Happy Birthday. I love Craftsy and learned a bunch of skills from them. FYI - Craftsy is sometimes available through your local library.
Omg I’m going to be in the bay area next month for vacation, this is the perfect video!!! I hope that linen skirt is still there so I can claim it. Thank you 🌞
Happy Birthday!!!! (Or maybe Belated Birthday depending on when you see this.) You found some cute puppers!! So much fluff 😍 I'm excited to see next weeka video. Thanks for this one, too. Its fun to pause and look at all the things on shleves and tables at the thrift stores.
I know it looks impressive at 7:46. This is literally every potters very first thing. And second and third. You can easily do it yourself on a wheel. No instructions needed, it will fall this way, promise 😊
I love thrifting in San Francisco, especially at Community Thrift! Sometimes, I’ll take a plane up just for the day. The Mission District is thrifting Heaven.
I love Valencia Street!!! I'm a Bay area baby traveling abroad rn & this video is giving me SO much comfort ❤️ PS. Banya is on my to do list once I get back
Happy Birthday! And thank you so much for these traveling thrift videos! My husband and I scored some beautiful coats while in Paris using your recc'd shops c:
Love your content and your unique style. Im in Wv not too far away!!! You are an inspiration for creativity and living life in such a cool way and providing me interesting perspectives❤!!! Love all of it!😊
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Also, congrats on the new merch drop. I'm a huge fan of your videos. As for books, Empire of Shadows by Jacquelyn Benson is probably the most fun I've had with a book all year. It's lighthearted, thrilling, and funny all while addressing serious issues.
That was fun 😊I went to Los Angelous once thrifting and got a lot of nice stuff. That was before prices went crazy though. I love your shirt with the big buttons 🥰Thanks for taking us shopping. Very cool shops❤❤
Happy birthday Kathleen! Hope you had a great day. Looks like a great time in San Francisco. I watched the TV show 'Tales of the City' many years ago even then it looked like a cool place to visit (though it seemed to have many steep streets? And bath houses, yes!). Looking forward to checking out the bead embroidery and visible mending tutorials on Craftsy (thanks for the discounted membership)!
Happy belated birthday Kathleen! We treasure you and what you create. Hope you had a lovely day/week and can't wait to see what you've been working on!
In my twenties and thirties I habituated, lived in and thrifted my TAIL OFF in the SF Mission. Favorites included the two story St. Vincent's next to El Farolito at 24th and Mission, Thrift Town (RIP) at 17th and Mission, eating burritos on that hill in Dolores Park. These days, must stop for a French hot chocolate at Dandelion!!
The place near El Farolito was, if i'm not mistaken, a Goodwill, and it's long gone, so sorry. I got some good things there. And I miss Thrift Town too. (17 reasons) Most of the curated vintage stores on Valencia are way out of my price range.
Happy Birthday, Kathleen! I'm 19 years and 4 days older than you. :) Yay Scorpio gals (although admittedly I'm one of those cusp-ridin' fools)! LOVE LOVE LOVE that green blouse, can't wait to see the new merch!!
That second vintage shop had so much good stuffff. And that Japanese top at Afterlife Collective was cute af!! I'm sooo glad you got the undercover clown cardigan/shirt, I thought it was perf for you. Excited for next monday!!
I’m so happy that you went to The City. I live about 4 hours away now and I miss it. Honestly, when I first found your videos, I thought you were from San Francisco or Santa Cruz. 😊

feeling scared because you are hungry is so valid
Did you watch to the end & catch the secret announcement???? ✨
I skipped to the end, it felt very spoliery. Super excited though!
I had to be stinky and ff - but watching the rest now, ps: GRATS!
I’m so stoked!! 🎉

Baby’s first Waymo ❤ also happy birthday!
i woke up from a post-birthday reset nap (happy birthday again twin !) to this video being posted and it was just what i needed :)
- im currently reading a comfort book of mine called The Chronicles of Narmo
First time watching 😊 I love the duck shirt! I am a horror lover and just started reading All Hallows Eve by Christopher Golden.
Welcome!!!! 💕✨
I just love how you pronounce all the Japanese words so naturally everytime🥰
i was born and raised in sf, moved about 3 years ago. i used to work at the banya, absolutely a hidden gem of the city! so weird to see how valencia's changed just since i moved. long life the SFC
SO EXCITE FOR SHIRT. also patiently waiting for you to read a psalm for the wild built, such a quick little book that i know you will love
the Mission is my home my love my jam. currently not in CA but last time i was in SF i went to NO and found a Diane von Furstenberg dress with a Moulin Rouge patterned top. also got to pet a very elderly dog who sighed so sweetly.
About 15-16 years ago, while I was in San Francisco with my family. We went to China town, and my parents bought me those paper lanterns in pink, orange, and yellow. I still have them to this day.
aw cool!!!!
That yellow linen skirt! Need!!! 💛🥲 Happy birthday, Kathleen🌟🌟
HBD, lady! Big love from MKE! I'm excited for the merch drop. I also enjoyed all the doggos in this vid.
Grattis på födelsedagen Kathleen! Look forward to seeing your t-shirts ❤
Happy Birthday 32 year old lovely lady, thanks for taking us to SF with you 🌟🤗💗
I just realized, when I say you Apple Watch, I’d be interested in seeing your tech set up, like your phone / apps / Apple Watch… and your relationship with it all! Love your vids, sis. Keep going!
Yay! We’re birthday twins! Happy Birthday. I love Craftsy and learned a bunch of skills from them. FYI - Craftsy is sometimes available through your local library.
hi twin!!! & that's awesome!
The black shirt with coloured buttons was sooo Kathleen!❤
Happy belated birthday fellow Scorpio! I too turn into a ✨️32 year old laaaadyyy✨️ very soon! Twinsies!
Omg I’m going to be in the bay area next month for vacation, this is the perfect video!!! I hope that linen skirt is still there so I can claim it. Thank you 🌞
Happy Birthday!!!! (Or maybe Belated Birthday depending on when you see this.)
You found some cute puppers!! So much fluff 😍
I'm excited to see next weeka video.
Happy Birthday beautiful lady. I have been to Academies Banyan before and it is lovely. I highly recommend it.
Kathleen, you are SO fun to watch.
I love Valencia Street!!! I'm a Bay area baby traveling abroad rn & this video is giving me SO much comfort ❤️
PS. Banya is on my to do list once I get back
Happy Birthday! And thank you so much for these traveling thrift videos! My husband and I scored some beautiful coats while in Paris using your recc'd shops c:
Happy Birthday Katherine! 🎉
Big hug from a fan from 🇵🇹
Love your content and your unique style. Im in Wv not too far away!!! You are an inspiration for creativity and living life in such a cool way and providing me interesting perspectives❤!!! Love all of it!😊
i am new-ish to your content but the stray kids mention?? YES PLEASE
hello fellow stay!!!!!
I'm reading 'Cemetery Boys' by Aiden Thomas for the spooky season. A few parts have brought me to tears so far, I'm loving the vibes.
That was fun 😊I went to Los Angelous once thrifting and got a lot of nice stuff. That was before prices went crazy though. I love your shirt with the big buttons 🥰Thanks for taking us shopping. Very cool shops❤❤
Happy Belated Birthday! And *squeaky noises* about next week!! 😃👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥳
Kathleen 🎉🎉🎉 Happy Birthday 🎉🎉🎉🎉 so happy about the news, hope you had a great birthday ❤❤❤
Thank you for holding up a mirror and reminding me why I continue to live here 🥰
(I’m not crying shut up it’s been a long decade! 😭)
Oh, happy belated birthday to you, Kathleen! You are so fun and joyful. I hope that your actual Birth Day was a good one!😘💕
Happy belated birthday Kathleen! We treasure you and what you create. Hope you had a lovely day/week and can't wait to see what you've been working on!
CUTE N FUN KATHLEEN VIBES AS ALWAYS 🥰🦂
17 Reasons Why. I still miss thrift town.
Sooo many white fluffy floof pups!!
Happy Birthday, Kathleen! I'm 19 years and 4 days older than you. :) Yay Scorpio gals (although admittedly I'm one of those cusp-ridin' fools)! LOVE LOVE LOVE that green blouse, can't wait to see the new merch!!
Happy birthday, you wonder! Can’t wait to see the tees (tease). Xo
That second vintage shop had so much good stuffff. And that Japanese top at Afterlife Collective was cute af!! I'm sooo glad you got the undercover clown cardigan/shirt, I thought it was perf for you. Excited for next monday!!
great video!! San Francisco has my heart, and your merch drop announcement has me giddy!!
I now want a vessel that says 'mouseturds' on it!
Happy Birthday to you. And many many more ...🎶🎵
I’m reading Book Woman from Troublesome Creek. It’s historical fiction that’s based on historical events in Eastern KY.
Reading The Fury of the Gods. So excited to start it.
I’m so happy that you went to The City. I live about 4 hours away now and I miss it. Honestly, when I first found your videos, I thought you were from San Francisco or Santa Cruz. 😊
Happy BIRTH-day (bee-lated) tooo YOU! ANND AHHHHHHH Merch made by THE MAMA of STINKY!!! I am here for it!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the fun thrift world you live in
