aye, totally agree with you. Shinnok is soo overrated, Quan Chi seems to be a bigger threat (comparing to Shinnok) in post-Soviet part of the world Shinnok is literally called Grandpa
Shinnok isn't as overrated as Shao Khan (from MK 9 and 11), he didn't do anything until Aftermath, when nothing mattered anymore, and got successfully betrayed by Shang Tsung btw, he avoided that in the original timeline
@@SilkyLew blaze at least had an intimidation factor. Kronika us just a bald woman who makes other people do her dirty work despite being the most powerful character. Blaze is set up as the most powerful character of Armageddon and you only fight other people because everyone's scrambling to get to him.
I 100 percent agree that his drip and color scheme is amazing. With Armageddon, it's not as big of an L as you may think, cuz he actually sent a doppelganger to the pyramid battle while he stayed back
He’s the smartest villain he’s just lost because how else can you stop an evil ELDER GOD from destroying everyone and everything INCLUDING SHAO KAHN but by having plot armor always have him being weakened not at his full power OR having an excuse to be beings who while may not be able to defeat shao Kahn because he is not a god,so cassie and Johnnys powers have no effect on shao Kahn which is why they lost but their powers can take down beings much stronger than shao Kahn which is elder gods shinnok to be specific it’s ironic how it works. It’s like being gifted with the power to defeat darth sidious in Star Wars who is stronger than darth vadar but that same power cannot defeat a weaker darth vadar it’s pretty much the same concept so it’s not to say that Cassie johnnys loss to shao Kahn was really that bad because he IS still extremely powerful and Shinnok being an elder god is really the only one stronger than shao Kahn but like I said how else can you defeat someone stronger than shao Kahn than by having plot armor by having the power to defeat him specifically or weaken him as they did in the original timeline. Shinnnok rarely is at full power. Shinnok outlived his minion,Onaga. Shinnok also outlived raiden and shao Kahn and liu Kang and shujinko tavern daegon……. And all the other villains and heroes……People severely underestimate both how smart he is which alone makes him very dangerous but also his power. You can be physically weak and yet be a much stronger being look at palpatine and darth vadar you can’t tell me palpatine isn’t physically weak and yet he doesn’t care as he knows true power is not physical like darth mauls but all in magic. In mk thjs still holds true with shinnok Beint stronger than Kahn and magic>brute force like Kahn onags. my point is proven when shao Kahn thinks he can physically overpower Shang tsung and kill him (as he always believes with anyone and everyone even this it’s not really true he’s just arrogant) Shang tsung immediatelt laid shao Kahn on his feet and back and killed him with magic effectively one shotting and killing Kahn with magic alone. Kahn’s single physical attack or hammer nvr did that in one attack. Shinnok is shown to instantly kill people with magic or by thinking it alone in mk4 and while some endings were not cannon it doesn’t matter it’s the point they did it for you to realize how powerful shinnok is he doesn’t even have ti move or fight in order to kill you and this may seem like an outdated concept that died in mk4 ending but mk11 brought it back with kronica and Shang tsung yet again.
@@fernandoenamorado2480 You didn't look at the MK9 ending for Johnny Cage after for beating Shao Khan. Johnny Cage becomes really powerful. The MK9 writers took this non-canonical ending and made it Canonical in MK10 for Cassie and Johnny. They kind of had to as only Johnny and Sonya lived in MK9. So, yeah Shhinok is great in MK10, but MK 9 told you Johnny was going to kick his but in MK10.
YES!!!! I see you're a person of culture! 😉 Seriously though that description is PERFECT and had me dying laughing! Your comment is criminally underrated! ROFL
I'm not even that bothered by Shinnok being a weak and easy-to-defeat character in the games. At one point, to me even Shao Kahn in MK3 was easy-to-defeat. It's that he never instilled that Shao Kahnesque or at least Shang Tsungesque aura of a genuine boss. He was a fancily clad old man whom you have to beat to pass the game and that was that. No drama when you finally reach him, no menacing feeling either in him or a battle against him.
Were you also kinda hyped when he was teased in mk9, and actually making the mistake of thinking that We might finally get a worthy successor to shao kahn
We can’t blame Shinnok for that though. Shao Kahn had 3 games(MK 1 mentioned Shao Kahn) to establish his lore, and then Shao Kahn had 2 games to instill fear to players. In MK 2 Shao Kahn was very scary to fight, MK 3 he wasn’t as scary because every character could combo cheese him, but one missed combo can lead to your death by his hands. Then even though Shao Kahn was missing in MK 4 and Deadly Alliance, his story and lore was still being developed for Deception, while Shinnok’s story and lore stopped after MK 4 until he reappeared in MK Armageddon. This is not even mention the story and the fear that Shao Kahn instilled again in MK 9.
I think people like him because of his amazing concept. An Elder God cast out and sealed after turning against the others. He is basically the devil of the Mortal Kombat universe and he has almost every single trait that a "final boss villain" should have. However I, like many others, do think that his appearance in Mortal Kombat X was a bit underwhelming
Guy its like the Title of Elder God has no meaning, how you gone introduce the biggest baddest Elder God of them ALL and then have hi be humiliated by a new girl with green hue, i honestly dont know at this point which studio did Shinok badly, Midway or NetherRealm
he is the "devil" of MK because he kill Lucifer, the original ruler of netherealm, and take his title. thats in mk lore. but judging by the story mode... shinnok prove to us all this time that satan/lucifer its just a cry baby push-over after all, but if you look to real life villains...ITS MAKE FUCKIN SENSE because of adolf hitler (he was weak as fuck, dont have super powers or godly abililties, he was a joke , but he was smart and manipulative and becasuse of that he led millions of followers to strike his own armageddon in world war 2.) all that im saying is that villains sometimes dont need to be strong or badass, just need to use their brains to work and do a "evil plan". i know thats stuff is cliche as fuck, but thanks to shinnok and real-life, its works fine
No no. I really like Shinnok as a character. In MK4 the dude was chewing scenery like no one's business and in MKX he gets the best scenes until he's defeated by the script... I'm not gonna blame the character for shitty writing.
Raiden responding with "Not today!" And zapping him is among my top 5 favorite raiden moments, Alongside 1.i must consult with the elder gods 2.his mk1 ending 3.not today! 4.his gibberish electric fly 5.every line in mk4
Shinnok is a really cool character, but my God did Netherrealm do him dirty. He lost is badassery for 2 reasons. 1: Being just like Shang Tsung by copying other people's moves but worse 2: Losing to Cassie and Johnny due to Green Energy bullshit
i dont really see him losing to the cages as huge L's only minor L's cuz they are from a lineage of warriors bred specifically to defeat elder gods its kinda like saying superman is a joke cuz krypotnite takes him out.
@@Crim-kun I am sorry, but that felt like a Bullshit excuse to give the Cages the spotlight in the MKX story. I really do get it, don't get me wrong, but I do not like the direction of the Green energy of the Cages.
@@Matt_Underwood understandable. i like that cages had that lineage but its the execution that makes it fail. with better set up it im sure they could make it work but nrs goes to the mcu school of making villains into jokes
@@Crim-kun regardless people would still complain about it, while praising Shao Kahn, who got his ass beat repeatedly and had to poison the last ruler of Outworld to even get the throne.
I love the idea of a Necromancer character, and his moveset in MKX is cool, but Shinnok was always just such a dork that I couldn't take him seriously as a Villain.
(Back when Cetrion was revealed in MK11) Me: Finally! An Elder God being playable. Shinnok: Am I a joke to- Me: Yes Shinnok. You are nothing more than a bad joke.
I honestly had high hopes for shinok after beating mk9 but when the time came for Shinok to put up or shut up in mkx, my guy didnt bring the fight, there was such a gravity about his tease in mk9 but ultimately he was disappointing and to make matters worse he is an Elder God, i feel like he is fading into Mediocreness kinda like raiden and sub zero.
Gods in MK are like Angels in Supernatural. They wanted them in the story, but they wanted the mortals to have a shot at beating them, so they ignored everything about their lore and power scaling.
so Shinnok has never been a character I really cared for, but I do remember being a child playing Mortal Kombat 4 and loving his skeletal hands he summons during his fatalities and I just remember crushing my popcorn as though I was using them cause I thought it was cool really was just a bad way to eat popcorn
It wouldn’t matter, if shinnok would have actually joined the battle he would have died by the hands of Shao Kahn, who somehow managed to get away from Onaga(I’m assuming Shao Kahn killed Onaga again because there’s no way Onaga would allow him to escape), killed the remaining combatants, killed Blaze(who consumed the power of the Elder Gods) and then killed Raiden. Shinnok was wise to send a clone, he wouldn’t have been able to do much. One of questions I had about after Armageddon was that now Shao Kahn pretty much became the new One Being, I wonder how long it would have been until Shao Kahn discovered there was one last elder god he can consume, Shinnok.
While Cassie beating Corrupted Shinnok *might* be somewhat extreme, there are mitigating circumstances as to why this might not be *that* extreme. First, as TUDG himself said, the Cage family is Elder Gods' kryptonite: it's not that the Cages are particularly strong (but more on that later), it's that their green aura gives them the boost against divine-level entities like Shinnok. Think about is: when Shinnok first transforms into his Corrupted form, Cassie straight up tries to punch him dead, and CS simply...shrugs it off, to the point that he's even hit in the face without even flinching, and then Cassie hits him again and HURTS her hand! She clearly IS ineffective against CS! But then, when her green aura activates, things change. She becomes resistant to his magical attacks coming from the very amulet, and is able to mop the floor with him, her punches and kicks DO damage this time. And then, on the other hand...Cassie IS STRONG. Green aura notwithstanding, she is in Special Forces with many missions under her belt, she is the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, trained by them both, she HAS to be a powerhouse. So yes, a Johnny Cage wasn't really able to beat normal Shinnok, he mostly stalled him until Raiden used the amulet...but then Johnny Cage wasn't *that* strong when he fought Shinnok: sure, he had the green aura, but he was still a movie actor, with just a couple of years of more rigorous martial, military training. Cassie literally trained since she was born! So she without green aura? Yes, probably Corrupted Shinnok would have destroyed her. But green aura + years of kombat training + training with Sonya and Cage (and sparring with Jackie, if you will)? Oh yeah, Corrupted Shinnok is taking the L.
Cassie still feels like she was given unearned victories. The debut fight for her and the other new generation saw them all get their asses kicked by Sub-Zero, and they had been fooled into thinking he had gone bad and were cutting loose against him while he was pulling punches. Yet later, Cassie defeats Liu Kang. Then again, all the Revenants are cannon fodder no matter how many fights they won in the last game.
Actually Shinnok did make it near the top of the pryamid of Argus if you watch the Armageddon intro near the end along with Scorpion. He also led the villans in the battle of Armageddon and sent a clone of himself so he was never there and it can be as seen as him knowing that the time reboot was going to happen and was able to get Shao Kahn to invade Earth through Quan Chi's manipulating
I've never seen Shinnok as "overrated" but rather underdeveloped and under designed with a boring move set who came across as a cheap knockoff of Shang Tsung. And the fact that they made him too accessible by making him immediately playable in MK: 4 didn't help his case. I 100% agree with you on everything and that he was the least intimidating "boss" I've ever seen. They tried to make him scary I guess by making him look like a catholic priest mixed with clown? They could've at least made him look like a killer clown or "It". But they definitely made him weak and also neglected to give him the mysterious boss treatment. They just made so many mistakes with the Shinnok character. I do like his color scheme and the concept of him but he needs a much better design, overall...like an extreme makeover.
He was really fun in MKX, way better than previous appearances. Unfortunately, they just don't want to write him to be a consistent credible threat. He's always just a necessary stepping stone to Dark Raiden.
@@Refining1 yeah maybe its a mortal kombat curse that awesome characters are ultimately made lousy pushovers, my heart breaks everytime i think of subzero and kotal kahn
I'd say he's one of the characters that mostly had great build up but poor delivery. They'd tease him well enough to seem like a new big threat. But when it was time to deliver they just kept screwing up. Well, still he was quite fun to play on MKX.
Nrs story mode makes its Villains look goofy. Look at Shao Kahn in MK9 and MK11… A dumbo who gets duped easily. Shinnok maybe less of a threat than Onaga, but he’s def higher on the boss ladder than Shao/Shang.
@@howaboutsomesoyfood He still tells Kitana about Shang and Mileena when he could easily mind control her. Still not like Mk11 but Shao is dumb in this new timeline
I used to think Onaga was strongest bcuz in his intro game at THAT exact point in time during deception arc he WAS the strongest but that was revealed that he was only so powerful bcuz of having possession and power of all of the kamidogu. But when he was defeated by shujinko,he was sent to netherrealm where he was just normal base Onaga which wasn’t actually revealed in story mode in deception as he was super powered up from the intro throughout the whole deception story but in Armageddon after his defeat it’s revealed he no longer has that power and is just Onaga the dragon king,as he was bfr his death w.o any major power ups and from there he was killed by shao Kahn sadly in armageddons story. He was more powerful than shao Kahn bfr his original death but with battle and soul absorbing shao Kahn far surpassed the shao Kahn that took orders from Onaga. This was made clear bcuz of his victory over onags which neither one was powered up. But in netherrealm Onaga met a villain that he knew he was NOT the boss of like he was with shao Kahn originally. The dragon king was out of his place of rule which was outworld BEFORE shao Kahn came into his own reign. Anyway onags met shinnok and he was scared of Shinnok and agreed to serve him. Shinnok is the one who approached Onaga offering to restore onagas power in outworld in exchange for onags helping shinnok regain his own power. That is a bold move unless of course you are stronger than Onaga which nobody was except shao Kahn and shinnok. Shinnok is the smartest villain if he was worried about onags he wouldn’t offer to restore him to power if it meant restoring shinnoks own power thst only shows me shinnok did not fear Onaga but rather saw him as his inferior. Why? Because shinnok would never dare help anyone who posed even a small amount of threat to his own power. Shinnok himself was weak in Armageddon’s story after his own mk4 defeat kahns mk3 defeat and onagas deception defeat but yet onags beleived he had a chance to kill Kahn and he himself said he wanted to kill blaze, gsin blazes power and only then would he battle Shinnok again. He didn’t have plan to battle Kahn with blazes power that only tells me that Onaga himself believed Shinnok is stronger than shao Kahn bcuz onaga didn’t feel the need to attain blazes power for Kahn’s defeat which he failed at but yet Onaga didn’t believe he could defeat shinnok UNLESS he had blazes power. Also Onaga himself is NOT one to take orders from anyone unless he KNOWS he can’t win. He certainly didn’t fear shao Kahn even though Kahn ended up proving Onaga wrong that Kahn had surpassed Onaga after onagas original death. So yeah due to armageddons official story of events it means defeated villains after their mk3/mk4/mk6 defeats proved Shinnok>Shao Kahn>Onaga. In the battle of Armageddon shinnok was not the real shinnok.in deception THAT version of onag would have definitely defeated shao Kahn and shinnok from armageddons timeline where they’re all weak after their defeats but Armageddon Kahn was pretty powerful. Do I think Armageddon blaze was stronger than Onaga kamidogu? I don’t believe so. Shinnok is naturally the most powerful main villain if you don’t give any of them any boosts but then again,if you count shao Kahn with a massive soul boost in mk3/mk9 ending and onags with kamidogu then it’s only fair to count shinnok with kamidogu SUCCESSFULY MERGED WITH the power of the one being from the animated movie bcuz Shinnok took what Onaga did in deception and actually succeeded in merging them but a step further and attainted the one beings power directly this I believe is the strongest villain at any point. Onaga. Point being if ppl want to compare a kamidogu powered Onaga or soul boosted Kahn its only fair to compare a kamidogu boosted shinnok in which case he now far surpassed Onaga kamidogu. Onaga has the power of the kamidogu individually but shinnok has the power of the kamidogu MERGED into one to release the one being and successfully absorbed the one beings power within his own body. I don’t think even onags and Kahn are strong enough to contain the one beings power within their own body’s. Shinnok in his base full power is proven to be able to war against all the elder gods in his story. Shao Kahn needed the massive soul boost Amp in mk9 but shinnok had no crutch like that.point being thst shinnok is probably the only villain who is naturally strong enough as an elder god who almost defeated them all in the original story only he can absorb the one beings power rather than the one being absorbing shinnok and his body. Again if we count boosted versions of Kahn and Onaga it’s only fair to count shinnok boosted too in which he took it a step further than kamidogu Onaga in power. I’m sure a kamidogu Onaga and a blaze Kahn would defeat shinnok without him having any power ups but if shinnok himself has the one being power up then it’s game over for all of them. Shinnok is Onaga superior in mk story and made a fool of Kahn. I didn’t want to believe a base shao was stronger than Onaga base but sadly Kahn was the victor of their battle in Armageddon. However I do believe the same Kahn who defeated onags in Armageddon would defeat shinnoks clone but not the real shinnok
No he’s not he got defeated by Cassie whereas shao got defeated by the champion and a powerful elder god buffed raiden. In mk11 I dunno what that shao was but I’m going with the mk9 shao.
I can agree that despite looking cool and having a cool concept, Shinnok has been severely downplayed in terms of menace. Especially considering that in the new timeline, Shinnok made Quan Chi legitimately loyal to him and thus give Shinnok his own eyes and ears in Shao Kahn’s inner council. Would this basically make the Netherrealm invasion the result of a Xanatos-level gambit, considering it happened in both timelines regardless of what happened?
(Back when Cetrion was revealed in MK11) Me: Finally! An Elder God being playable. Shinnok: Am I a joke to- Me: Yes Shinnok. You are nothing more than a bad joke.
Why isn't she the final boss in MK11? If she appears to clean up, what Shinnok fucked up, and follows her own bad intentions and interests which could lead Earthrealm into Chaos during the fight between Liu Kang and Raiden etc., I would accept her. But no, instead we get another elder God, bigger joke than Shinnok and we get a titan, never mentioned before in the mk-universe, who can do everything but can be killed by everyone. Kronika had to be the final boss in a MK Armageddon 2, where everyone is in there - if we get another MK game where "everyone is here".
Not sure if it’s been mentioned yet, but Shinnok actually does make his why up the pyramid. You can see him and Scorpion racing up as Zombie Liu Kang holds Shang Tsung back. Also it’s said it was a doppelgänger but idk.
He's not overrated at all. Overrated means he's a popular character which he really isn't. Liu kang is a good example of an overrated character. He was interesting in mk9 and x, but people wanted to be a gary stu again like he was in mk1-4 so they turned him into a fire god not only making him a fanfiction character, but making raiden completely useless. Shinnok's only problem is that he's underpowered.
Okay, my first problem with the character is after the invasion of Earthrealm and every soul on earth practically taken it felt like step down. He wasn't inter-dimensional threat like Shao Kahn, just a escaped bad guy who caused a bit of bother, there were no stakes. You could have actually ended the story at MK3 and then rebooted the series with a new generation of fighters and villains but hey this is Midway writers for you...
He suffers from the mk villain story mode problem that the player is always playing the good guy so the villains loose every fight. They can only win in scriped cutscenes I think the reason Shinnok is concidered a loser is bc he actually just loses, while Shao Khan does win in the old timeline
seeing this made me realize that shinnok is what jarek is to kano, a clone with a new name. in his defense he was a fallen elder god not an elder god so maybe his abilities were stripped, he always had potential to be a bigger villain and mkx gave us hope. sadly NRS has made elder gods and titans into jokes
Shinnok in a wheelchair, it's Shinnok in a wheelchair He started off clapping Lui Kang Then he got defeated by Cassie and Johnny Cage Shinnok in a wheelchair, it's Shinnok in a wheelchair He got the drip in armagedon Then he got the dip by the fanfic weending
I think the worst thing about Shinnok is how the games put a large emphasis on how bad he is, Quan Chi literally downplays Shao Kahn in mythologies to hype up Shinnok when mythologies but it's also where he supposedly swapped the real amulet with the duplicate. The idea that he can't be beaten or killed and only has to be sealed away sounds cool on paper, but the execution was weak. In fact, Shinnok's amulet is more important and valuable than Shinnok himself because we saw how deadly Quan Chi, Mileena, and Raiden were when they used the amulet even in the MKX comics where Reiko's whole purpose was to become a vessel for Shinnok's amulet.
I know it wasn’t the main point of the video, but mentioning Raiden, my sincere hope is that because MK11 past Raiden gave up his godhood to Liu Kang, I’m hoping that Dark Raiden is rebirthed in the current timeline. I always interpreted him disappearing as him still existing but being unable to coexist in the timeline so long as past Raiden was alive with his god powers. Plus this would be an excellent way to ensure that Raiden makes it into the roster of the next game
They really need to do a lot of characters right in the next MK, Shinnok is an elder god ffs. How do you get beaten by some green glowing girl? I would've been okay if Raiden took him down, because Raiden is the most powerful in that story. But cmon now, Cassy? Shinnok better be op asf in mk12 or else I'm going to riot😭
Was literally asking myself the same question when I saw the title/thumbnail, he literally only had 2 chapters in MKX and was defeated by fxckin Cassie
@@TrueUnderDawgGaming he over captured edenia in mk4 killed the other gods, manipulated daegon then punked him later on when he raised his voice on him beside mkx shinnok had a good run
Above all else, Shinnok has an issue with his goal and motivation. He wants to destroy everything. Why? We don't really get an answer. MK4 said he wasn't content ruling the Netherrealm because it was all fire and brimstone. Yet he wants to destroy all of reality, leaving him with nothing to rule over.

I mean, generally you can be a fan of a character that constantly gets wasted and shat on (Reptile) so a character’s win/loss ratio doesn’t matter at all. I’m not even that big a Shinnok fan but his aesthetic and themes are AMAZING so I absolutely understand the appeal and would like to see him again but, just without the ugly horn/demo form. Keep his corrupted priest look and he’ll forever be amazing. He’s also way better than his wack poorly done sister that randomly popped up 🤷♀️
@@onagaali2024 well obviously she’s a powerhouse she’s a goddess lol. She was still extremely poorly done even one of the developers posted about how he was upset with how she turnt out.
I feel like you're on to something by saying that ppl like Shinnok for having his MK4 version as their first impression. I for one grew up with MK4. Never owned a SNES, never played the original trilogy so for me MK4 was the definitive MK experience and I've always enjoyed him and Quan Chi as the main villains. The idea of an Elder God gone mad is a terrifying premisse and MK4 did a great job showing just that, presenting Shinnok as an unstoppable force killing ppl left and right and only being defeated by trickery. That's why Shinnok getting defeated twice by the Cages without really doing anything was such a disappointment. NRS's obsession with the Cage family prevents so many other characters from having their time
You're not alone, he's a great big bad imo and I mean I know his character depth doesn't reach any further than "I am the God of death, destroyer of all!" But that's kinda the point.. he's the devil of Mortal Kombat. Also I've always loved his signature skeletal hands that were as iconic as Scorpion's "GET OVER HERE!" and I LOVED his mkx designs.
Bro, i saw a video called things that You missed in Armageddon, and below Shang tsung and zombie liu kang on the piramid , it was shinnok. Sry for my english.
How easily Kronica was able to corrupt Cetrion, to me, is somehow even more insulting than how mismanaged Shinnok was. At least he didn't turn into a Rubik's Cube this time. Because THAT was genuinely disgraceful!
Wasn't aware Corrupted Shinnok was difficult. I beat him on my first try. Block, Uppercut, Repeat. I do find it lame that you need to beat the boss character with cheap tactics instead of using the character's combos and unique abilities that you spend the entire game learning.
6:38 i just watched the armageddon intro again and HE DID make it close to the top. Just before Blaze appears, we can see (for a minisecond) Shinnok reaching Liu Kang and Shang Tsung (exactly when Shang Tsung's hair turns white)
The writers just don't know how to protect their villains and bosses. Nearly every MK boss has been made a fool of by now, Shang Tsung, Goro, Kahn, Kintaro, Motaro, Shinnok, Kronika. Only Onaga wasn't humiliated. The sad thing is, each of them could be handled so well if they had better writing.
Idk, but you say that Shinnok got killed when Quan Chi stole Shinnoks amulet, but didn't that also happen with Kronika and her crown? And Kronika has way more L"s taken than Shinnok imo. I know nobody loves Kronika so that's why u picked Shinnok + if u have to pick between Cetrion and Shinnok, u would Def pick Shinnok bc he has achieved way more than Cetrion, even though she isn't a boss and we haven't seen much of her yet.
I think he’s a cool concept with potential like Rain, Havik or Dark Raiden but just never fully utilized. Like a fallen elder god and ruler of the Netherrealm? There’s a lot you could do with that. With the proper writing behind him, he could be at that Palpatine or Sauron level. And I think he either forgot about Special Forces when talking about least played games or he’s actively suppressing any memory of it along with Battle of the Realms which had a bit of Shinnok in it.
What I don't like about Cassie in MK11 is that in the story mode she is always so serious while in the dialogs for matches she is sassy and rude. I could balance it with some serious dialogs.
I think Shinnok's problem is that he's never really had much of an identity of his own. He's just another evil sorcerer, just eviler and badder than Quan Chi and Shang Tsung. Maybe if they leaned more into the necromancy shtick, like maybe if he summons a bunch of undead minions like Darkseid in Injustice 2. From a gameplay perspective it would also mirror Cetrion's Zoning gameplay, which would make sense since they're supposed to be siblings.
Shinnok running from Johnny Cage doesn't appear in Armageddon itself, but it is described in Johnny's Armageddon Bio. On that note, I feel like those Bios were setting him up as more of a schemer, than a fighter. His plan was seemingly to lure all the powerful warriors into the battle of Armageddon, send a magical double there to avoid suspicion and then have Daegon win that battle, so that his armor would channel Blaze's power into killing everyone around. Shinnok manipulates Daegon, convincing him that Argus and Dehlia favored Taven. He was the one to initiate the gathering the Forces of Darkness. He sent Quan Chi around with invitations to Rain, Shang Tsung. He freed Onaga's soul from Nightwolf's bindings in the Netherrealm and cut a deal with him. He made another behind-the-scenes deal with Raiden... I'd like to give more examples, but we only have 17 of those Bios.
I like Shinnok in MK:A, he was easily my best character, and I was extremely good at that game online (Top 20 on 3 different accounts lol, but two were KAK accounts to be fair). Although his projectile and teleport were almost useless, his unblockable hand from the ground move was very powerful. I could smash most people online unless they were using broken KAKs. I wanted to main him in MKX but he was just so underwhelming. I wanted his unblockable hand move to return.
Johnny's bio from Armageddon outlines him tracking Shinnok time thanks to his time being dead just before, kicking his ass, Shinnok teleports away, and Johnny just calls him a coward. So canonically yeah, he ran like baby.
In my personal opinion shinnok is worse than any of the villains because even though he is powerful and a fallen elder god, he takes so many L’s that it’s hard to take him seriously
When you said that Shinnok ran from Johnny in MK Armageddon, I had to rewatch his cutscenes again to check. Your memory is faulty. However, he does at least _appear_ to have been almost defeated by Li Mei. Though it is later revealed that Shinnok was intending to test Taven, so it could be that that was an act. (Ya know, did Mace Windu beat Sidious, or was he pretending to have been beaten.) [EDIT] I just found it; he does run away from Johnny in Johnny's bio, where it describes that he ambushed Shinnok on Shang Tsung's island. Though apparently he was able to shadow kick Shinnok before he teleported away, which is interesting given Johnny's new strength over divine entities. My guess is that this was where some of the writers at NRS got the idea to make him uniquely strong against gods. But yeah, sorry about that; I don't read character bios often. I'm also more with 4th Snake; Kronika is the most overrated, and indeed, worst villain.
6:34 I don't want to be that guy, but for this sake I will. At the end of the Armageddon Intro you can see Shinnok and Scorpion behind Zombie Liu Kang and Shang Tsung before Blaze does his roar thingy. Ultimately I don't blame you for missing that as it's a blink and you miss it kinda deal.
I personally like his characterization in Mythologies. Other villains bluster, have bombastic voices and all that, but Shinnok's power is deceptive. He seems like a kindly old man. There's a deception to his appearance. And besides, having a character who doesn't seem all that threatening turn out to be not only evil, but one of the most powerful characters in the MK universe, is a nice turn of the tables after a character like Shao Kahn, who wasn't subtle about anything.
The first time I came across shinnok was when I stumbled upon MK 4. A friend of mine in school who had bought the game brought the instructions manual where I could see the character roster. As an 11 year old, it was interesting to see these different characters and I was curious to understand which direction the game was heading towards. -------------- For Christmas I got both MK4 and MK Mythologies. As I read the instructions manual, I got excited to find out that the series now has a new villain. And that Shao Khan wasn’t the first one to try to conquer earthrealm. The idea of a corrupted elder god banished in hell (netherealm) and now seeks his chance to get back at his foes was an exciting take for me. And MK4 gave the series a realistic tone when Shao Khan was no longer there. He had been the villain since ever. It was about time he was defeated. So it was time to move on to the next villain: Shinnok!
How do you write about a character like this? It's hard since I don't know how he would be considered significant to the story. Shinnok comes at the tail end of a great villain, shao khan, and between a major event such as the death of lui kang. Maybe how he can be written is by making him predict future events but even that may have some difficulty.
3:06 the irony of the parallel between Shinnok and Galactus, brightly color god that take Ls so much (in game/in comics) extremely powerful in canon and gets easily defeated
Shao Kahn is a pretty tough act to follow. He pretty much set a high bar for the following final bosses/villains to live up to considering how hard he was to beat then he had other stuff going on for him that set him apart from other villains(e.g the taunts and insults lol) on top of already being an intimidating looking character. Shinnok is definitely an interesting character with a lot of potential to be great final boss if the writers actually put more effort into the story and gameplay aspect. I feel like Shinnok was at his best in MKX. If either Johnny Cage or Raiden was the one players had to use to beat him, this video may not exist.
Underused is better description. I actually liked the idea him as final boss for MK4, it felt fresh after cheap ass Shao Kahn. But his moveset is horrible just Shang Tsung without changing form, that's lame. I really loved him in MKX, cool Samurai Costume, Bone Shaper variant he got major update. His Corrupted form could be better but not that bad to be honest, again fresh breath after cheap ass Shao Kahn. On the other hand, I agree story sucks hard. I have no problem Cages defeat him but he underused too much. Imo outworld civil war and return of Shinnok should be seperate stories. He is freaking ruler of Netherrealm (the freaking name of studio), where are demons? Why not revamp Drahmin and Moloch? Why not use Sareena? Why Netherrealm used so little? With a good writing Shinnok and Netherrealm (the realm not studio) has so much potential. Eh, at least he was still threated better than some of the other villians. Quan Chi embressed (literally his balls stomped and cut his head), Kotal embressed (get his ass kicked by freaking Jade), Goro offscreen killed (and he was a honorable fighter in old era), Shao Kahn gets his ass kicked by freaking Kitana. Shinnok lost because of some deus ex machina.
Don't forget Baraka and Reptile, the biggest jobbers of the MK universe. I mean, if MK had a character that was a 4yr old lil' girl those two would still get their asses kicked by her
@@pocoloco753 Poor Reptile, he used to this treatment, he killed his own ending in MK4. Despite that he was a fun character which I never can use and Kraken costume was awesome. On the other hand Baraka should be more important, why they are ignoring him and Mileena, wasn't they were couple? He should fight for her revenge and developed.

A very clever move, considering almost nobody survived
Quan Chi looked ten times more badass.
I think Shinock asking Raiden "DO YOU WANT A PIE????!?!" In MK A was quite the redemption arc for the character. Really interesting and deep. 🤣

@Nick Good point
The thing is, we already have Quan Chi.
His variation with the skeleton arms are hilarious
Gods in MK are like Angels in Supernatural. They wanted them in the story, but they wanted the mortals to have a shot at beating them, so they ignored everything about their lore and power scaling.
so Shinnok has never been a character I really cared for, but I do remember being a child playing Mortal Kombat 4 and loving his skeletal hands he summons during his fatalities and I just remember crushing my popcorn as though I was using them cause I thought it was cool
really was just a bad way to eat popcorn
Lore wise, Shinnok is awesome. But the writers can't do him properly.
In MK Armageddon, the Shinnok we saw was a doppelganger. Which means he was less powerful than the real Elder God Shinnok
Johnny is a martial artist 1st and actor 2nd

He still tells Kitana about Shang and Mileena when he could easily mind control her.

Why isn't she the final boss in MK11? If she appears to clean up, what Shinnok fucked up, and follows her own bad intentions and interests which could lead Earthrealm into Chaos during the fight between Liu Kang and Raiden etc., I would accept her. But no, instead we get another elder God, bigger joke than Shinnok and we get a titan, never mentioned before in the mk-universe, who can do everything but can be killed by everyone.
Okay, my first problem with the character is after the invasion of Earthrealm and every soul on earth practically taken it felt like step down.

You could have actually ended the story at MK3 and then rebooted the series with a new generation of fighters and villains but hey this is Midway writers for you...
He suffers from the mk villain story mode problem that the player is always playing the good guy so the villains loose every fight. They can only win in scriped cutscenes

Hell yeah! Give us Dark Raiden and give him full chapter ffs! He have such big potential as character!!!
They really need to do a lot of characters right in the next MK, Shinnok is an elder god ffs. How do you get beaten by some green glowing girl? Shinnok never participated in Armageddon. That was his clone the real Shinnok was just chilling at home, watching the whole mess

The entire segment on "Taking Shinnok's drip will kill him" is the funniest thing I've heard this month so far.
He’s also way better than his wack poorly done sister that randomly popped up 🤷♀️
I disagree with that. Cetrion is a beast and powerhouse.
NRS's obsession with the Cage family prevents so many other characters from having their time
Shinnok is probably my Favorite Villain in the Franchise,I can't be the only one.
He is the best!
He's great but NRS make him sound so generic.
He is my favorite villain of the netherrealm era of mortal kombat ,i can say nothing about the midway era i only play mk9,mkx and mk11
It's LORD Shinnok to you peasent
I honestly thought as a kid that Shinnok was Shang Tsung's dad because they both had the character morph ability. 😅
Bro, i saw a video called things that You missed in Armageddon, and below Shang tsung and zombie liu kang on the piramid , it was shinnok. Sry for my english.
No villain will ever be as cool as Shao Kahn!
Shang Tsung: Hold my souls.
Onaga
Rugal
Deagon
@@lewisaino who is that?
How easily Kronica was able to corrupt Cetrion, to me, is somehow even more insulting than how mismanaged Shinnok was.
At least he didn't turn into a Rubik's Cube this time. Because THAT was genuinely disgraceful!
1:39 I’ve never heard compilations pronounced that way but hearing it makes sense
Mythologies also got its resurgence due to a video a youtuber named Projared made about it a few years ago.
Wasn't aware Corrupted Shinnok was difficult. I beat him on my first try. Block, Uppercut, Repeat. I do find it lame that you need to beat the boss character with cheap tactics instead of using the character's combos and unique abilities that you spend the entire game learning.
BecUs in normal mode he’s easy as hell but if you set the difficulty to very hard/hardest it’s a totally different boss battle lol
0:04 Australians, the scariest.
6:38 i just watched the armageddon intro again and HE DID make it close to the top. Just before Blaze appears, we can see (for a minisecond) Shinnok reaching Liu Kang and Shang Tsung (exactly when Shang Tsung's hair turns white)
"You steal his chain" 😭 I'm dying bro
Wait, Shinny has a fanbase?
The writers just don't know how to protect their villains and bosses. Nearly every MK boss has been made a fool of by now, Shang Tsung, Goro, Kahn, Kintaro, Motaro, Shinnok, Kronika. Only Onaga wasn't humiliated. The sad thing is, each of them could be handled so well if they had better writing.
the arch vile in doom eternal looks and is more intimidating than corrupted shinnok
I have a full video on Kronika as "The Worst Boss"
I think he’s a cool concept with potential like Rain, Havik or Dark Raiden but just never fully utilized. Like a fallen elder god and ruler of the Netherrealm? There’s a lot you could do with that. With the proper writing behind him, he could be at that Palpatine or Sauron level.
And I think he either forgot about Special Forces when talking about least played games or he’s actively suppressing any memory of it along with Battle of the Realms which had a bit of Shinnok in it.
6:41 actually, at the end of the Armageddon intro, Shinnok and Scorpion can be seen running up the pyramid while Blaze was emerging
Make a Video on the Lamest Villain in Fighting Game History
Ur watching it right now
Kronika is the lamest villain
@@Walbort21 IK I said it as a joke
I've never heard of a Shinnok "diehard fan"
Basically have everyone die but himself
Love your content keep up the great work
you showed me the colours, and i can only think of an upside down Eric Cartman
I remember me and my small brother always calling him just "the clown" when I was younger.
I don’t think Shinnok ever ran away from Johnny Cage in Armageddon. I don’t think the 2 even interacted with each other in the konquest mode.
Johnny's bio from Armageddon outlines him tracking Shinnok time thanks to his time being dead just before, kicking his ass, Shinnok teleports away, and Johnny just calls him a coward. So canonically yeah, he ran like baby.
Armageddon Shinnok have's a gorgeus design
In my personal opinion shinnok is worse than any of the villains because even though he is powerful and a fallen elder god, he takes so many L’s that it’s hard to take him seriously
I couldn't agree more. Shinnok was never as good as people thought je was.
(Ya know, did Mace Windu beat Sidious, or was he pretending to have been beaten.)
[EDIT] I just found it; he does run away from Johnny in Johnny's bio, where it describes that he ambushed Shinnok on Shang Tsung's island.
Yeah it was all an act
I like Underdawg, but he should check his facts before recording.
@@arturdabrowski3976 He really should have.
I found what UnderDawg was thinking of. Read the edit on my first comment.
4:03 Shao Kahn is also defeated in every arcade ending in MK9
6:34 I don't want to be that guy, but for this sake I will. At the end of the Armageddon Intro you can see Shinnok and Scorpion behind Zombie Liu Kang and Shang Tsung before Blaze does his roar thingy. Ultimately I don't blame you for missing that as it's a blink and you miss it kinda deal.
You are completely right :)
Having Cassie cage beat shinok was awful
Tbh in the Original Timeline he is a power house, but he isn't treated as such in the new timeline. He also isn't given fair treatment.
So basically MK1 Shang Tsung.
@@bigevil1001 I wouldn't call Shang Tsung's persona in any incarnation as "kindly".
@@bigevil1001 Where do you get that ? MK1 Shang was a smug douche. Shinnok in Mythologies had a polite vibe to him.
Green glow made it possible for the Cages to win and og Shinnok lost to Liu Kang somehow (maybe Onaga's fire) idk
The intro was great I love you Underdawg
The first time I came across shinnok was when I stumbled upon MK 4.
A friend of mine in school who had bought the game brought the instructions manual where I could see the character roster.
As an 11 year old, it was interesting to see these different characters and I was curious to understand which direction the game was heading towards.
--------------
For Christmas I got both MK4 and MK Mythologies.
So it was time to move on to the next villain: Shinnok!
to be fair, the Shinnok in the Armageddon intro is a clone, not the real Shinnok. You get this info from Shinnok's Armageddon Ladder Ending
Bro dash fight is an incredible and very underrated channel. Helping me get decent in mk11.
Actually in the Armageddon intro right before we see Blaze, Shinnok and Scorpion are on the pyramid right behind Zombie Liu Kang.

"Even Australians"😂
As a Australian, I approve this joke.
Um. . .Galactus can take an L from stealing his helmet or something? Because Shinnok is that pathetic.
@@Mark-tq7bf that's true
This video needed to be done 💀
"and even Australians"
LOL
MK4 Shinnok sounded like a god. Only time he sounded intimidating.
3:13 - you show me those colors in that way... I'm not thinking shinnok. XD
His fatalities in MK4 were pretty cool.
Random question; why do you not like Mortal Kombat 11 story mode
