I have had mine now for over a year..and have put it through some heavy use and abuse! I baton a lot of wood for camp fires and BBQ and have really beat the shit out of it. It does keep an edge pretty good too considering what I do to it! I don’t regret buying it. It feels great in the hand too..better than I thought for a knife of this size. Great knife! Great review!
First really thorough review I’ve seen of the Pillar. I bought 2 recently. Very impressed. It can take a pretty fair amount of abuse...any reasonable amount, anyway. And, being thin, it is a great slicer, and if you had to use it for defense, it’s not heavy like many of these tank knives, so it’s quick. Great review.

IT is actually a tactical combat first and foremost. It is too light to be an effective bushcraft/survival knife. Survival knives should be thicker and heavier to take a lot of outdoor abuse. THIS knife is light and thin for speed and maneuverability.
Awesome video brother I got a new knife myself I got a Ruike Jager F118-B made of 14C28N and about.18 on the spine. The spine is nicely rounded and did I mention g-10 handles sheath is awesome too also got a couple of their folders as well great stuff for the money

they should have made it convexed edged.... convex is the holy grail edge for an outdoor survival knife, so easy to sharpen in the field, super strong edge retention, stays sharp crazy long time,goes thru wood like no other grind, so on and so on... its all positives no negatives with convexed grind, dont know why more knives dont come convexed, other than maybe time or costs...
you said it. Convex edge cannot be made by machine. It has to be hand ground and that takes time, time equals cost. That is why I really like Fallkniven and other makers who exclusively convex their edges.

Say Heah The S. O. G. Camel Humps were popular in Nam, Also Tunnel Rats used them. Yeah, The Pillar will add nicely to my S. O. G. Camel Hump stable. So far I have the Seal Pup Elite TiNi, My Trident 2.0, and now the Pillar. Even though my Seal Pup Elite TiNi and my Trident 2.0 are made in the AUS8a, S. O. G. does a great job with their Cryo Tempering, It really makes that stainless pretty good as far as edge retention. This is my 2nd. knife in the S35Vn, I also have The Snody SnakeCharmer. But trusting S. O. G. 's Cryo Tempering, I think my Pillar will be the bomb.,,.
Convex sucks. I own this knife. It’s made to slice. The spine is a sharp 90 degrees and perfect for striking a ferro, but the choil needs touched up with a file, as it’s a bit rounded.
It is too expensive $200+ for a blade in S35VN. You can buy a Cold Steel SRK in S35VN for $100. I have 3 Cold Steel folding knives in S35VN all about $80-$110. SOG has always been pricey.

The latest batch of SOG Pillar (satin) I got in Jan 2021 is all stone washed finish on the blade. I told SOG I personally like either both this new version or older version finish. I told them all stone washed finished will bend in better with scratches and they also replied that is also their main reason for this change.

It is my favorite knife. People think the steel of these knives is expensive. It is not. Why people don't make their own knives. Even with hand tools it is not very hard to make. You can have them heat treated for very little to your choice. These companies charge this, because of things like TH-cam ect. It would be different if they didn't get a.l the hype people give them on socail media. And would not cost half as much. It takes them no time to make thes knives. Profits are very high! Try making your own.
nothing I hate worse than cutting into hide or heavy fabric and getting caught in a choil or sharpening notch near the handle. Ok for bushcraft, but not hunting or tactical in my opinion.
I think the knife leans too far toward the tactical side to be practical for everyday usage...The sledge on top would be uncomfortable while notching wood and other small tasks, plus as you say, it would chew up your baton. The choil, which seems like it would also be uncomfortable and thus less useful if not useless, forces normal slicing to occur further out on the blade and creating a loss of leverage. Why would they extend the tang about 1/16 of an inch above the micarta covers? The protruding steel would have to be annoying in cold weather usage. With SO MANY other fine choices on the market, I'd give this one two thumbs down for trying to be both tactical and woodsy while being mediocre at both.

SOG makes excellent knifes. Don't leave it on your camping table unattended even if you step into your tent for just a minute. I lost several different SOG tools that way. One was my fault the other was my wife fault

@@razbiton173 ive used it a lot for food prep, and for eating steaks etc, and it performs well if your are in a one knife only situation, but typically, I like to use a smaller knife for such tasks..just personal preference. It does give you a strong sense of security too this knife does.. so solid in the hand, and looks a bit wicked too, still loving mine!

i agree it rides a bit high. They could have sunk more of the knife in the kydex to fix that.

Overall really impressed, the choil could help with sharpening especially in field conditions but I don't like it that much either

Nice knife but at $172.00 is a little steep considering other USA made knives are out there at a more affordable price.

Smart up-front choil for striking a fire steel. But they lost me with the swedge. Could be perfect with a thicker spine for improved batoning.
