3/2023......I was 6 years old in 1959,....it was around that time or maybe a year or two later, my aunt, owned one of those 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz's. She and her husband were wealthy,.., he was in the Jewelry business, and made a good living. My parents were more middle class,...we owned Dodge's. So my aunt's Caddy was parked in our driveway in suburban Cleveland, Ohio. Me and my young chums, were goofing around, chasing each other around my aunt's car. I wasn't watching close enough and kind of stood up, and got clobbered by that extremely pointy tail fin. My wound didn't draw blood,....but I had a walnut sized knot in the middle of my forehead, for weeks afterwards. Boy did it ever hurt! Ha!

My grandparents had a ‘59 Buick. It’s fins were huge, but not as big as the Cadillac’s. I remember my grandmother driving me to Robert Hall to get my school clothes. Cars DO provide such good memories!

+CEOkiller I agree with you, it's a good one. Here is a bonus for commenting (unless you're already a Subscriber, then you'll see the car videos on your inbox when I video them), I'm expecting to have more REAL Cadillacs by weeks end, Thanks for viewing, Lou
I'm active in the automotive community and see a number of late 50's early 60's Cadillacs, but this one is a really nice example. The color is very classy and the leather interior was beautiful. If you haven't been around one of these cars, the camera tries, but doesn't quite reveal the scale of these cars, they are really big and the 225" length is incredible on this car. I have a new '19 Cadillac CT6-V which I think is large and this '59 Cadillac is over a foot and a half longer. Very few garages are large enough to park a car like this. However, when you arrive in a car like this, you are instantly noticed, thanks for showing us this wonderful car.
actually, they fit in almost any garage. standard garages are 20' long and 12' wide. these caddies even go through a 7' wide door, which is the smallest width garage door, with ease.
Lou, What a piece of real estate that 59 caddy is! My older brother owned a 66 caddy convertible in the Florida keys, one day his friend got his Ford 150 stuck in the sand when trying to pull his boat and trailer out of the boat launch. He asked my brother to help pull him out of the water with his caddy. When his friend honked his horn in the F150 they both where to pull out the boat and trailer out at the same time, they tied a tow strap to the front F150s tow hooks and the other end of the tow strap was tied off to the back of my brothers 66 caddy convertible. The F150 had its parking brake on so it would roll back further into the water with his boat and trailer. As his friend was climbing into the F150 his hand accidentally hit the horn, and my brother hit the gas pedal of his 66 caddy convertible and literally pulled out the F150 boat and trailer with the F150s parking brake still on… that’s how powerful those big old caddy’s are! I believe it had a 465 if I remember correctly. and the color was baby blue. We used to cut bait on the hood of that car, imagine blood dripping down the front hood and fender of the baby blue paint! Those where care free times to say the least! Lol

This Cadillac is the winner of the highest fins battle of the late '50s and early '60s. Mopars, especially '61 Imperial Crown Convertable - with its "outrigger" tail (and head) lights. This was the Jet Age, and car styling had an aeronautic theme.
This has been my dream car since I was a kid! There were only 1320 made in 1959, and amazingly I found one in my country! But didn't have the money to buy it back when the owner didn't know its real value! Now he does! Thanks for uploading!

Wow Lou what a beautiful huge unit that was! I really enjoyed this video and the memories of this car as I was just a year old. Beautiful design and and rich color in and out. I have had a great time watching this and the curator was great describing this piece of automotive history! Thanks for sharing Lou!
Lou, I've tuned into your car show for quite a while now, and I must say you do a fantastic job. I would also like to say, your friend Andrew strikes me as a very nice guy. I have a friend who has one in South London, England. I can't seem to recall the actual number but it was either 1000 or 1001 of 1320. I used to take old people and sick kids out for rides in it, a car that makes everyone smile when they see it. I was driving in London one time and an American fella jumped into the road, i hit the Power Brake and just managed to not run him down. Startled i stared at him and he told me excitedly that his father had had one of these when he was a child and never thought he see one of these on the streets of London! He must have come from a relatively wealthy family as iirc you could've bought a couple of houses for the price of this car at the time. Although my friends' car is now red after it was restored in Sweden (where he purchased it) the original colour is the same as the one in this video. For its time it had a ridiculous amount of electric power, front bench seat (forward, back, angled, sideways tilt), all windows including quarters, roof and that little gizmo that sat centre on the dash was to turn the full beam down. The lights at night were magnificent, all 8 at the front and 4 rockets at the back. The massive steering could be turned full lock with one finger and had an amazingly good turning circle. I absolutely loved driving this car, a pure cruiser although at a speed higher than 40mph it starts to act like a big boat. It sounds like a V8 should and i think this engine in particular (2 of them in one boat) was used by Riva in their Aquarama model. My friend only made one addition to the car, he installed a 1958 Philips 45rpm record player, it made every journey epic. Thanks for reading my ramble and posting this video. Jel.

This is just an amazing car. I hope to own one of these when I start driving. Also, I can't get over the fact that these things came stock with V8s! Outstanding!
During that era you couldn't get a Cadillac that was anything but a big V8. Cadillac went to V8s early (1915), dabbled with V12s & V16s during the 1930s, and returned to V8s during the 1940s, '50s, '60s, and '70s. In the '80s they brought out the Cimarron, a car best forgotten. That broke the all-V8 trend.
Lou...I think most car aficiandos believe the fabled '59 Caddy is the ultimate be all-end all, over the top example design of the fabulous 1950's, surely a memorable time in US auto history...simply an explosion of innovation, spectacular colors and design...I'm thrilled I was around even as a youngster to experience it all in real time...and am happy you are able to post these wonderful videos....you simply can never go wrong showing the 59 Caddy in any of its great selections....
WOW! This is when they made cars with some real style and pizzazz --- not utilitarian fiberglass/plastic devoid of any chrome of today. Cars today all seem to look the same -- to me anyway.
Hi kraftpr, I'm glad you enjoyed this video. It was so much fun to video and share. Thank you for sharing your thoughts of cars with pizzazz. Hope you'll find other cars on the Channel you'll enjoy too, Lou
As rolling sculpture, and a big piece of automotive history, yes. BUT, I've driven a few of these land yachts, and I'd choose a V6 Camaro - or even a Honda Civic - to drive. Nice to admire the lines and trim of this 60 year old classic antique, but the Camaro, even Civic will out-brake, out-handle, out-accelerate this car, and most - if not all - of this genre. And then there's aerodynamics, weight distribution, and ergonomics...
@@SteevK69 many people realize that there is more to driving than performance numbers; braking, accell, handling etc. Sometimes its more about comfort and cruise. But to each his own!
There is something so great about the old Caddys. I love the fins and the bulk of the car. We used to call large cars boats. This one is a prime example of a boat!
1320 Eldorado Biarritz convertibles were built. Many have been exported out of the US. Popular in Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, Russia, Australia .......Big American cars with styling to match the space age. Greatest car for Homecoming, parades, rock n roll movies, cruising In-N-Out, Elvis and Marilyn look-a-likes, and a thousand ads in fashion, style, and city magazines. Iconic is the word. Hope you will re-upload this to correct the YT stabilization distortion. Thanks Lou. I've been lucky enough to see a few of these in person in SoCal.
Hi rizzle razzleuno, You hit the nail on the head with YT stabilization distortion, and I've learned from some of my earlier videos. Thank you viewing and sharing your thoughts on this car, Lou
The sheer chutzpah in design of the 59 Eldo is amazing! Hard to imagine if anyone could even dream up all that chrome trim and make the moulds to produce it these days?
When I was a child, our neighbors had a '59 Cadillac Coupe de Ville...it was white with a black and white interior...as a small child I was always afraid of it...it looked kind of sinister with it's fins, and grille that looked like an open mouth with teeth! I remember many a ride to school in it on rainy days! Eventually it was traded in on a 1970 Coupe de Ville, gold with a gold brocade interior and black vinyl top. Good memories of this astonishing automotive marque!

I remember reading that the tailfins were only 4” shorter than the roofline. Having retired from law enforcement, I like the bullet taillights. LOL! Beautiful chariot.
It would be nice to see a more technical video of this car in more detail. Like the gas cap, the operation of the power vent windows, the bucket seats that the back folds all the way forward to keep the hot sun off the seat cushions when the top is down. Show that the sun visors hide when folded down and inward hiding under the windshield. Turn signal indicators on the front top of the fenders. Comment on the tobacco industry influence on placing all the ashtrays and lighters and the big "lighter" sign on the dash. Show how the air ride works. If the radio has the "wonder bar" show how it changes station when pushing the floor button that looks like the hi-beam floor button.

IMHO, the Only 59 Cadillac that those fins looked like they were symmetrical to the car, was on the limousine. I believe that the parade boot was made of fiberglass, not plastic?? Was it mentioned that this car had a 3x2 barrel carburetor as did it’s hard top counter part version Seville...

Your Eldorado is beautiful! I have had many of these cadillacs when i was young. I know all of the specs since i was a teenager. I am sad that i did not keep them. I am 63, and cannot even own them anymore. only the wealthy can afford the pleasure to have these beautiful vehicles. Harley Earl? thanks...
Richard Woods when I was 16 I could have bought a '59 Caddy convertible for $300. I kid you not. That was 1974. Another guy I was in school with bought it and drove it daily.
I remember visiting my uncle in Santa Barbara California in 1967, he had a white 59 Fleetwood. It was still like brand new only 8 years old, the interior was HUGE!

thanks for these videos Lou have loved old Cadillacs since I was a little kid as my recently deceased maternal grandmother had a 1979 Coupe Deville in Colonial Yellow with saddle brown leather interior and when mum and uncle Joe were kids Grandpa had an Eldorado Convertible from the late 1960s that was traded for an Oldsmobile 98 Holiday Coupe in 1971 of 1972 Model year
Lou you've done it again. As you know There can Never be enough CHROME for me. 59 Cadillac style in general was a bit too clean. But side moldings on this Biarritz and even more on Sixty Special really took 59s to my idea of what was truly CADILLAC OTT excessive luxury. 🏆 ✌. 👑
Love seeing the details that most people tend to overlook except for those that designed the details. Badging & logos can be works of art in & of themselves in addition to the car as a whole.
That 59 caddy has a 390 in it 350 horsepower, and my 60 had the same drivetrain and it was fast I mean fast it moved right along and so did the gas gauge.
Quit grousing, 1959 good gas was only about 30 cents a gallon, $ 10.00 would easily fill it up. Too bad pay was so low, but those silver dollars that kid on the corner was flipping are now $20. 👍👍
Saw one in person in my neighborhood in the 90s, in that color! It was in the driveway with with the sun beaming down. I stopped my car and had to get closer. The owner came our and said , Can I help you? I said I just had to see it up close and that I didn't touch it. She smiled & said enjoy and walked back inside. The vision was breath taking! Freaking Fin-tastic!
The color is either Wood Rose or Persian Sand . The lighting makes it tough to get an accurate hue. As for the position of the R for the gear selection it wasn't just an issue for cadillac because several cars had odd set-ups and it was made worse by the Chrysler Push Button system plus the Edsel . Reverse was finally placed beside the forward selections and no longer between them . The push button system had flaws to jump in and out of a selection or stick in place , Ford found that many owners brought the car back for a conversion to the column selector . Packard had their own set-up as well.
Gary wood Also, with neutral being positioned in between reverse and the forward gears, it's not so easy to go accidentally from forward to reverse, or vice versa, thus destroying the transmission.
Probably not Desk Pearl. That doesn't make any sense. Typo for Dusk Pearl? paintref.com/graphics/chip/gm_1959_cadillac_acme_c_03.jpg shows that the Persian Sand Metallic was exclusive to Biarritz & Seville only. The Persian Sand Metallic color should be verifiable by a color code 98 on the firewall tag.
Beautiful design from a beautiful time in the USA. Things were far from perfect but compared to today, I would happily give up all the technology I enjoy today to be able to go back to this far simpler time in history.
Hi Mike Hawk, I think it was Dr. Seuss how said, "Don't be sad it's over. Be glad it happened." That helps me with people or things I no longer have, and I hope it helps you too. Thank you for viewing and sharing. Lou
Beautiful and the color combo is perfect. The quality of the interior is incredible. Cadillac certainly spent less money on interiors by the 1969 model year.
Yet another great video Lou..one big land yacht...imagine trying to fit this into a garage in the new homes today...wow...keep up the good work Lou...just started watching these as late...will do more...thanks from a fellow gear head...
It fits in modern garages just fine. They have to hold Escalades, Suburbans and Hummers, and often two of them at the same time. Back in 1959 garages were often built to hold just one car, and they didn't always have a car as big as a Cadillac in mind. As a young driver it was pretty scary trying to fit a Caddy into a garage that was barely 8 feet wide.
@@dlwatib My house was built in 1954 - the year I was born - and has a single-car garage. But it is so narrow, I can't see how it fit '50s & '60s cars. Since I bought the house, I've owned a 1996 Eagle Talon, 1999 Eclipse, 2003 G35, 2008 G37, and now 2017 Camaro. Each has been marginally harder to fit...
I've been fascinated watching your videos and just wanted to say "Hello" and Thank you for showing in detail your fine automobiles..As far as the Cadillacs go this was definitely the time when owning a Cadillac really meant something..Thanks again. Dan Butler in San Diego..

I was 12 when this car was new. A retired couple up the street had one in this color. I was thrilled when, on occasion, I got to ride in it. No air conditioner, though, and this was Florida. Interesting to remember how slow a/c was to catch on and we take it for granted now. Love the 50’s cars that remind me of my youth.
Were they saying that to Chrysler? I think the Eldo's fins - aside from sheer height - were best looking with those rocket-engine tail lights halfway up...

+Lou Costabile I think the only option you have right now, is to re-upload the video and dont use TH-cam Video stabilizer. But this good video is kinda ruined by the youtube stabilizer. iguess im not the only one who saw that.
Yeah, that You Tube video stabilizer isn't that great as it causes a waving effect that really sucks. I'd rather watch a camera shot that was a little shakey. In fact, I think you can remove the stabilizer effect and revert back to the original if you want. I've used it on a few of my videos before I got fed up with it. MY camera work is pretty steady to begin with so I didn't feel it was worth the wave effect to try to get the video even more steady.
I was born on Cadillac Blvd. in Detroit, Michigan. I currently own two Cadillacs and all my life Cadillac has been my favorite car. Therefore, I consider myself one of the several million or so world's leading authorities on which Cadillac looks the coolest and it is the 1959.
IF THESE GUYS ARE CAR GUYSI'LL KISSME TOCHUS. DUAL RADIATORS WHAT ??ONE WAS THE COOLANT AND THEW OTHER WAS THE EVAPORATOR FOR THE AIR. AND THE COMPRESSOR WAS FOR WHAT?? One of the gems of any true collection of automobiles. Being a convertible just takes it over the car. The only thing missing is the optional record player that this 59 didn’t have.
The gear selection sequence we know today of P RNDL was standardized by the SAE in 1963. Before then, automakers put the gears pretty much anywhere they wanted. When the automatic first came out, there was no park. You put it in neutral and set the parking brake.

Hi Jeffrey, Glad you enjoy this video again :-) Thank you for sharing the color, Lou
My grandparents had a ‘59 Buick. It’s fins were huge, but not as big as the Cadillac’s.
I remember my grandmother driving me to Robert Hall to get my school clothes.

Now that's my kind of car.
'59 Cadillac Eldorado
جورج وسوف
Hi mjdart, I agree, when you arrive in a car like this, you're noticed :-) My pleasure sharing this one with you, and you're welcome, Lou
actually, they fit in almost any garage. standard garages are 20' long and 12' wide. these caddies even go through a 7' wide door, which is the smallest width garage door, with ease.
The glory days for Cadillac, when it truly was The Standard of the World. Thanks Lou!
This was when Cadillac was King :-) You're welcome Michael.
Flipper Style forever!!!
It was the glory-days for Detroit, Stamping metal and Chrome shop regulations.
That all changed.
Lol
Michael, Now that's a good story! Thanks for sharing! Lou

This has always been my all time favorite car, American engineering at it's best! By far the best fins of the era...
Thanks for the tour...
Glad you found a Winner on the Channel for you :-) You're welcome.

Hi Bruh Mango, Agreed, and amazing car :-) Hope you get yours soon, Lou
During that era you couldn't get a Cadillac that was anything but a big V8. Cadillac went to V8s early (1915), dabbled with V12s & V16s during the 1930s, and returned to V8s during the 1940s, '50s, '60s, and '70s. In the '80s they brought out the Cimarron, a car best forgotten. That broke the all-V8 trend.
This example is in the neighborhood of $200,000.00 + !!
Hi Daniel, Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts on the 59 Caddy. Appreciate your kind words regarding the Channel, that means a lot, Lou
But to each his own!
kraftpr ..priced one????
There is something so great about the old Caddys. I love the fins and the bulk of the car. We used to call large cars boats. This one is a prime example of a boat!
Hi chip block, Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) Me too. "All Aboard!", Lou

Agreed, the Daddy of Caddy :-) Lou
The 57 bearitz cvt was quite impressive too .😎
When I was a child, our neighbors had a '59 Cadillac Coupe de Ville...it was white with a black and white interior...as a small child I was always afraid of it...it looked kind of sinister with it's fins, and grille that looked like an open mouth with teeth!

Happy to share this "Beautiful chariot" with you :-)
It would be nice to see a more technical video of this car in more detail.

Was it mentioned that this car had a 3x2 barrel carburetor as did it’s hard top counter part version Seville...

when I was 16 I could have bought a '59 Caddy convertible for $300.
I kid you not. That was 1974. Another guy I was in school with bought it and drove it daily.

thanks for these videos Lou have loved old Cadillacs since I was a little kid as my recently deceased maternal grandmother had a 1979 Coupe Deville in Colonial Yellow with saddle brown leather interior and when mum and uncle Joe were kids Grandpa had an Eldorado Convertible from the late 1960s that was traded for an Oldsmobile 98 Holiday Coupe in 1971 of 1972 Model year
Hi Courtney, Happy to read you're enjoying the Cadillac videos :-) Lou
Lou you've done it again. As you know There can Never be enough CHROME for me. 59 Cadillac style in general was a bit too clean. But side moldings on this Biarritz and even more on Sixty Special really took 59s to my idea of what was truly CADILLAC OTT excessive luxury. 🏆 ✌. 👑

That 59 caddy has a 390 in it 350 horsepower, and my 60 had the same drivetrain and it was fast I mean fast it moved right along and so did the gas gauge.
Hi Mark Anthony, Thank for viewing and sharing your knowledge, and the gas gauge info too :-) Lou
Hi Pat, Happy to read you have good memories of the 1959 you remember :-) Lou
The color is either Wood Rose or Persian Sand . The lighting makes it tough to get an accurate hue. As for the position of the R for the gear selection it wasn't just an issue for cadillac because several cars had odd set-ups and it was made worse by the Chrysler Push Button system plus the Edsel .
Reverse was finally placed beside the forward selections and no longer between them . The push button system had flaws to jump in and out of a selection or stick in place , Ford found that many owners brought the car back for a conversion to the column selector .
Packard had their own set-up as well.
Gary wood
Also, with neutral being positioned in between reverse and the forward gears, it's not so easy to go accidentally from forward to reverse, or vice versa, thus destroying the transmission.
Gary wood GM had that color in other lines. Chevy called it Desk Pearl. Looked great on a 57 chevy I saw.
Hi Gary, Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Lou
Beautiful design from a beautiful time in the USA. Things were far from perfect but compared to today, I would happily give up all the technology I enjoy today to be able to go back to this far simpler time in history.

Yet another great video Lou..one big land yacht...imagine trying to fit this into a garage in the new homes today...wow...keep up the good work Lou...just started watching these as late...will do more...thanks from a fellow gear head...
Hi bob crawford, and fellow gear head :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hope you see many more cars on the Channel you'll enjoy, Lou

I was 12 when this car was new. A retired couple up the street had one in this color. I was thrilled when, on occasion, I got to ride in it. No air conditioner, though, and this was Florida. Nice car! but the video is kinda F**** up. because you used TH-cam's video stabilizer. every angle has been screwed up.
+nickythok HI Nickythok, You're right I used TH-cam's stabilizer. Is there a better way, or what do you suggest? Thanks for viewing, Lou
+Lou Costabile I think the only option you have right now, is to re-upload the video and dont use TH-cam Video stabilizer. But this good video is kinda ruined by the youtube stabilizer. iguess im not the only one who saw that.
+nickythok Thanks for the tip, seems it puts "a wave" in the video, Lou
I felt dizzy at some points in the video, good video apart from that, thanks.
Hi Al Sim, Great story :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hope you see many more Cadillac's on this TH-cam Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
steering wheel is so thin. must be a teeny tiny air bag ;)
Good one :-)
Lol. You could really fool a millennial. Send them to look for one and some blinker fluid.
cbi1991 lol ,no air bags .🙃
No seat belts either. Plenty of ash trays though.
1959 was an incredible year I'll never forget it
Glad it brings memories :-)
IF THESE GUYS ARE CAR GUYSI'LL KISSME TOCHUS. DUAL RADIATORS WHAT ??ONE WAS THE COOLANT AND THEW OTHER WAS THE EVAPORATOR FOR THE AIR. AND THE COMPRESSOR WAS FOR WHAT?? Hi Richard Feibel, When I'm around a car as cool at this one, it's lucky I can even speak English, and I'm doing all I can to not leak my own radiator fluid :-) Hopefully you can enjoy the cars on the Channel, and like the Wizard of OZ, don't pay any attention to the man behind the camera (curtain), Enjoy, Lou
I LOVE THIS SHOW. THE BEST IS HERE.

aaron crawley 59 eldos had 3 2's. Cruise at 65 would get about 15mpg. About 425 hp.
aaron crawley It got 12 mpg. But gas was 12 cents a gallon. It was all relative

My favorite year Cadillac of all time.
Hi Jim Roveto, Glad to read this one is a Winner for you :-) Lou
Please learn how to use a camera. Stop wasting time shooting badges and symbols and shoot the damn car while holding the camera still for a moment..
+boosted in line whatever......Please, there's no need to be rude. I for one really appreciate seeing the finer details like the small chromed badges. There are many auto videos to watch out there and Lou, imho, has a great style and coolness about his videos. He is cool, calm and capture's what most of us want to see.
Thanks Jon, Lou
Ouch!
This is a car i would like to have in my driveway

One of the gems of any true collection of automobiles. Being a convertible just takes it over the car. The only thing missing is the optional record player that this 59 didn’t have.
Happy to read you enjoy this car :-)
The gear selection sequence we know today of P RNDL was standardized by the SAE in 1963. Before then, automakers put the gears pretty much anywhere they wanted. When the automatic first came out, there was no park. You put it in neutral and set the parking brake.
I did not think about that, and thank you for sharing your knowledge Joey D. That is a nice piece of information to share, Lou
AHHH those taillights
Just the way we like them :-)
Best video I ever saw on this fabulous car
Hi Robert Altieri, High praise :-) You might like this one too. Enjoy! Lou th-cam.com/video/JyEDN-H0r_A/w-d-xo.html

Hi Peter Hogan, You found a Winner! Glad you like this one :-) Hope you find many more cars on the Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
The small compressor was for the air suspension, and they should have shown the hidden gas door-great video!
Glad you like the video, and thank you for commenting, Lou
