  • Homily for the 2nd Sunday of Easter
Sunday within the Octave of Easter
    (Divine Mercy Sunday)
Why do we need to give St. Thomas a long needed reprieve from his designation as "The Doubter"?
How are we, or are we not included in the Beatitude Jesus gives to Thomas? - "Blessed are they who have not seen but still believe."
Fr. Bill discusses the well known story of Jesus' Resurrection.
(Sorry if the sound seems a little odd. Tried a new setting. Will be going back to the old one.)

It was wonderful to pray mass with you today and I loved the homily. I like the idea of Thomas as a theologian, because asking the hard questions ARE how we deepen our relationships and knowledge. Asking questions isn't something we do in this day and age too much, which may be why our faith and relationships can be fragile and our connections shallow. Anyway, bravo! Thank you for your teaching! Love and blessings!

One of the most interesting apostles in my humble opinion! We have all been Thomas at various points in our lives, that’s what makes him so intriguing I think

Any theory on why Mary Magdalene and some of the apostles didn’t recognise Jesus.

Not really, but two years ago, on this same Sunday, I toyed with a theory as to why certain people saw Jesus in the first place and why someone else (who may shock you) may not have seen Him at all. Link is below. Hope you enjoy; but please listen to it in its entirety.

Church Fathers stated that those who saw The Resurrected Christ without recognizing Him were shown first what was in their respective heart and subsequently our Lord God Jesus Revealed the fullness of Truth into their hearts.

The disciples on the Road to Emmaus "were prevented from recognizing Him." Luke 24:16
Whether Jesus looked the same or not, only God knows us each so intimately, and has such perfect foreknowledge of our potential reactions, that He is able to interact with us in such a way as to achieve the outcome He desires. So I believe that the Lord prevented the disciples from recognizing Him in order to give us this story in the Gospel.
These privileged disciples experienced the world's greatest Bible study, which no doubt they transmitted and explained afterwards to all the other disciples. Wisdom straight from the lips of Jesus Himself, that very likely became incorporated into the teaching of the Church. On top of that, the disciples then recognize the Risen Lord in the breaking of the bread. Two lessons that form the essence of the Mass: The reading of the Word, and the Breaking of the Bread. Such wonderful lessons we would have missed out on if the two disciples had immediately recognized Him and gone bonkers with excitement, or blanked out from shock, or had a heart attack.
The Risen Lord reveals Himself to each of us in His own time, in His own way. His timing is always perfect. I'm a Jewish convert to the Catholic Faith. I was converted by a dream. I am always fascinated by conversion stories, because everyone's encounter with Jesus is unique, and reveals uniquely the amazing power, wisdom, love, and mercy of Our God.
