      What Nikki Haley said was technically correct, it was how people heard it that was wrong. The problem I have with the situation is that the person who asked the question threw a grenade in the room and refused to take responsibility for the question. When she responded with what do you want me to say, there was silence. The silence in respect to solving a long embattled question is the problem. The person asking the question could have solved the situation right then, but made the decision to make a long emotional situation longer as well as more inflammatory. They could have started a dialog to make the whole Civil War/Slavery issue something to actually talk about instead of making the situation worse than before they spoke their question. Want to teach and heal people, or do you want to throw gas on the embers of a fire that has been allowed to smolder for far too long as well as create a cloud of smoke for hate to hide?

White people didn't work - they enslaved people to do it for them. And now they are having to face the reality of their atrocities, lies, deceit and repulsive history.

      There were two sides in the civil war. Those in the North said all people should be free & those in the South said, OK but only if we can enslave those who are black. The North said no way and then the Southern people started shooting because they wanted to keep enslaving the black people. But because the North was serious and used all its strength, the South lost. So basically the South was about the right to own other people and do what they want with them.

    The slave holders did not want to free their slaves because they would be financially ruined. It really doesn't matter whether or not they believed it was okay to hold people in slavery for their benefit. The thing, the issue, was they didn't want to free their slaves. They didn't want to risk being forced to free their slaves. They didn't want to be forced to stop doing a wrong thing. If slavery was not a wrong thing, the Civil War would not have happened!

      I think that is closer to truth than merely saying "slavery." I resent the moral tinge over this, disguising it as a battle of Good versus Evil as Chris Christie says. It was a battle of capitalism versus feudalism, and the industrializing north's economic need to make wage slaves out of legal slaves. Only a few, like Quakers, can claim ANY moral high ground. The union was NOT a true advocate of human rights. While the slave trade was the most profitable industry, the North was perfectly content. When the textile industry became the most profitable, suddenly they found their "morality." Uh-huh.

Had she been raised in New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York or any Northern State, she might have answered very differently.

    The really important lesson from the Civil War is that the Federal Government is in a position to protect the rights of individuals and groups against States that would infringe them and that would try to get other States to do the same. Specifically: Slave-holding states wanted to have slavery in futures States .. the Union wanted to block the spread of slavery. So, Haley was right to talk about differences in how people saw the role of "government" and "protecting freedom". However, not only did she totally miss the specifics of slavery, but she also missed the specifics of the philosophical and moral conflict. This is probably because her party is obsessed with States' rights to limit the freedom of individuals and groups - only invoking the Federal level if they can't get enough suppression spread throughout the individual States.

    • @dreamcoyote
      @dreamcoyote 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Agreed. The slave states were using federalism to protect their "property rights" in free states. They were all about having federal laws if it protected their ownership of other people while travelling through free states and when it came to "escaped property". In the Confederate constitution that was one thing states could never exert state's rights over: they all had to adhere to the ownership of slaves, forever.
      In some recent efforts by Texas, there are echoes of the slave states trying to exert control over free states.

The ROLE OF GOVERNMENT was a big part, the south resisted the imposition of new values on them (right or wrong) and that's the basis for secession. It was against the whole point of the union, none of those states joined the union to have a new regimen foisted upon them by other members of the union. Slavery became a bigger part of the war as it went on, but it wasn't all of it.
