How to Fix a Broken Mirror: FJR 1300 Front Stay/Subframe Replacement

  • When a generation 3 (2013+) Yamaha FJR 1300 tips over, it is moderately common for your mirror's mounting bracket to break. This mounting bracket is part of your front stay (aka subframe). This how to video will walk you through the necessary steps for replacing the front stay. Another option would be to remove and weld the original front stay back together.

Just finished replacing my main stay after a broken mirror joint on the stay after a tip over. My son and I replaced the stay and the left control switch assembly in approximately 4 hours thanks to your video. I can not tell you how much it helped us. You did do some things that were not necessary, but we were able to learn from those also. Thank you for taking the time to make the video. Don't forget to let your wife off easy, I'm sure she feels worse about it than you did..

I'm so glad I found your video as I'll be replacing mine this week and truly felt overwhelmed at the thought of it. I broke my left mirror backing it out of the garage. I wasn't used to a motorcycle with mirrors that stick out further than the ends of the bars. I ended up clipping the edge of the garage opening with the mirror and instead of bending back, the stay broke. This was five days before I was to head off on a three week trip. My local shop JB welded it with some metal strapping for extra support. It was enough to last the trip but was loose the next month. Unfortunately, we get raped for parts in Canada. Retail at the dealer was $400.......WTF? Fortunately, the owner's kid works there and I used to coach him in soccer to he did it for $300+tax. I'm sure it would be another $500 if they were to do the labour, hence I'm learning all I can before diving in. Huge kudos to you for taking the time to video the job for the rest of us. Cheers, Scott

Man oh man, you are a life saver. My wife Karate chopped the left mirror with the garage door this afternoon. I pulled out the service manual for guidance and the eleven pages of disassembly may as well have been Greek. While looking for a replacement "Stay" on the net your video popped up. My lucky day. If I had the part I could spend the weekend cursing my big hands and alternately viewing your video on my portable tablet; in the garage while trying to do as good a job as you have done without the handicap of trying to get good video. I may take the broken stay to my heliarc guru to see if I can mend the broken one while waiting for the new. I really can't thank you enough and it seems there are and will continue to be many more thankful views because of the poorly engineered part from Yamaha. You my friend are a valuable asset to the FJR community world wide. Thank you so much for your diligent effort, excellent commentary, and great video.

Steve Pearce I really appreciate getting feedback like this. Comments such as this justify the work spent filming and editing all the video. Hope it goes well for you. I think you should be able to get your original stay welded for about $50, or buy a new one for about $180.

Hi there Sir, Thanks for putting this amazing video together. I have watched it a few times and I am going to start my own stay replacement project. Managed to break my mirror mounts on both sides in stupid stationary drops. Had fixed them back with JB Weld twice on the left and once on the right. Left was broken again by someone walking past and bumping into the mirror. So I've decided to just replace the stay. And i know your video is going to be most helpful.... 4 years on. Big thank you for taking the trouble to put it together. Cheers from Canada. 🍁🍻

That was great. I just had a zero mph drop in my front yard. Broke the right stay and cracked the nose where the mirror mounts. I wish I had seen this sooner. Waiting for parts now but I should have an easier time putting it back together from watching your video. Thanks!!!!!

This was a great video. Thanks for making it. I had been working myself on the same thing for my 2013 FJR for a similar reason - a friend dropped it while getting back on after helping someone else. Got to the part where I needed to take off the head light and your video was helpful. I also discovered to take the Stay off then swap the windshield mechanics.

This happened to me as well, 2016 FJR. The whole thing was over my labor grade so I let the shop do it. Thanks for the video.

I replaced my 2008 stay because of a drop. The mirror bent the stay. The 2008 is a bit different than the 2015. I straightened it some but never could get it exact. It was probably close enough for some but I finally broke down and purchased a new one. I didn't hear if you used a factory manual but I purchased one and that helped quite a bit. I learned that on the 2008, the front end section, including headlights all come off after removing 4 bolts. Something I realized after overlooking it in the manual and taking it all off individually. Lesson learned.
One great thing that came out of my drop was I replaced my mirrors with the FZ1 mirrors. One of the best changes I made on the FJR. They're cheap compared to stock FJR mirrors.
Anyway, great video and thanks for taking the time!

You are the second person that I have seen with a nut that was not properly fastened on the mirror of an FJR2015. I think the other one that I saw was on the right side though. I think it was in a video from mr. polymers or theaverageJoetorcyclist. cant remember for sure

I can feel the pain in the voice... I had freak accident when I have dropped my 2015, and I have 60k miles on the bike, so glueing it is 😁

Did this event follow the addition of other crash protection you mentioned earlier had not been installed ?

NO! She ran into your bike because the bike ran out in front of her as she was backing up. LOL

OMG it already happened to me few days ago. Some idiot hit my 2014 FJR 1300 tip over to the left side and suffered the same fate. It cost me two head light bulbs and a broken stay that holds the front fairing headlights etc leaving me $600 SGD poorer.
Plus damaged painwork on my left side carrier box.

Do you think it possible to jbweld without removing everything??
    Cheers

Typically, yes. That would be the primary advantage of using JB Weld, otherwise most people would do an actual metal weld or buy a new one.

Science Biker, I have an issue with my ambient air temp sensor on my 2014 FJR, I was told the sensor is most likely bad and that its located behind the speedo gauge. is this sensor accessible by just removing the windshield and the black plastic piece underneath or do I have to remove other components to get at it?

    • @sciencebiker9519
      @sciencebiker9519  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I believe you'll have to remove the headlight assembly to access the sensor. But you're correct that it's located behind the speedo attached to the front stay.
