How To Operate A Walk Behind Mower (Step By Step Tutorial)

  • Over the last few months we've had the pleasure of demoing this Exmark Turf Tracer walk behind lawn mower. While we had it, I wanted to make a quick video on how to operate a walk behind mower, with a quick how to step by step guide.
    Mowing grass with a walk behind is a little more complex imo than compared to a zero turn or a stander, but the controls aren't too difficult to learn. Hopefully this helps give you guys the lay of the land incase you're ever using one as a demo, a loaner, or maybe even it's your first mower for your new lawn care business!
    Other helpful video we mentioned: How To Operate A Zero Turn Mower.

    Quick little how to guide today while we still have this fun demo of the Exmark Turf Tracer. Hope this helps any of you guys out there who are maybe picking up an old walk behind as your first mower, or have a walk behind loaner!
    If you guys have any other great tips you can add that we might've missed, please leave them in the comments below!

    True Story. The turf tracer almost cut my foot off back in September of last year. I tripped and the mower hit me on my left foot. Cut a good piece of my foot off but luckily here I am 10 months later and 6-8 surgeries later and im finally walking with a boot at the moment. The turf tracer is a good mower, but it did give me a heck of a scare and I thought I wouldn't walk again. Doctors told me that they would amputate my foot. But here I am 11 months later. Taking it day by day. Brian if you want to see pictures of my foot and how the process is going let me know. Turf tracer is still a good mower though 😅

    I did lawn care as part of my property maintenance business for probably 5 years before buying an old gear drive Ferris 36. Loved it so bought an old HydroWalk DD 48 inch and added a sulky to the 48 for productivity. No longer using z turns. 2 wb are the same weight as my old 1300# z turn. On light mow days i run mower in bed of truck

    Hardest mowers to master. A friend of mine dropped a pair of his off to me for some welding repairs. I dam near wrecked his trailer trying to off load them. I had only ran a belt drive walk behind and the controls are very counterintuitive. I picked up a Ferris FW45 this spring and it took a solid 20 hrs of use to get comfortable on it.

    Great tutorial. One thing I've found out about these dual hydro walk behinds is all the heavy components (engine, hydro pumps, and wheel motors) are down low. Low center of gravity and very good hillside stability. If you're going across the face of a hill and start slipping down, you can individually control the upper drive wheel by slowing it down and the mower will run in a straight line across the face of the hill. I've mown hillsides before with a dual hydro and felt myself slipping a bit. Mower just keeps on gettin' it. It'll surprise you! Just use common sense and you'll be fine. Of course, if you have a sulky, raise it up and latch it under the handlebars or remove it entirely. Better to walk the face of the hill than ride it.

    Thanks Brian. I'm in Australia and been in business for 16 years, I have 2 Ferris zeros and I can see the advantage of the deck being so far out the front of the walk behind for getting under trees and shrubs but I can't see an advantage in having a stand on zero. I've seen a couple of contractors getting around with them. Can you help me understand ?

    This video is awesome. Question, I own a .65 acre lot. I really want one of these, but I want to actually walk behind the mower, not just stand behind it as it moves. Is a yard that size big enough for a mower like that? Also, if I'm actually walking behind the mower as it moves, would I look funny? just wondering, lol.

    • @BriansLawnMaintenance
      @BriansLawnMaintenance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would honestly get a zero turn for anything over a half acre

    • @2Brandec
      @2Brandec 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BriansLawnMaintenance the feedback is much appreciated. I really enjoy walking, but I also work a lot. I want a walk behind that is big enough that I can have the entire yard done within or around an hour. We currently pay 2 kids down the street and mowing and weed eating takes them about 105 minutes, with your average riding mower AND a push mower. I also want a mower like the 48', because I can use it to pick up side work if our economy crashes. My uncle owns a lawn business and said an Exmark will last you a lifetime if you take care of it. Im thinking long term. Again, your feedback is much appreciated, and I love the videos!

    • @shannonp4037
      @shannonp4037 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@2Brandec Check out Bradley mowers too. They offer different types/configurations. About 1/2 the price of the name brand mowers. Depending on the shape of your lot and obstacles in your yard, it should be under 45 minutes to mow once you get used to the mower. I have a 50" Cub Cadet zt-1 Zero turn and can cut about 1/4 acre (front yard only) in under 15 minutes with no obstacles except a well head. Trimming adds time as does blowing if needed. The way I figure things is to take the mile per hour you will travel (walk) the length of 1 pass and divide by the deck width. 2 MPH is 176 feet per minute. So in 1 minute, a 48' deck can cut a path 176' long. If a yard is 176x160 feet, that is 0.65 acres. The 160' wide divided by 4' cutting deck is 40 passes. So you need 40 passes at the full 48" deck and 176' long taking 1 minute per pass. Add in additional time for each turn of +-10 second and you add 400 seconds or 6.7 minutes to the mow time for a total of 47 minutes. Increase your speed to 3mph and you take about 30% of the time off. Now it takes around 35 minutes total.

      I know it is late, but there is usually a level or 2 that you pull and lock back to release the hydros. Different mowers are located in different places but typically close to the drive wheels.
