I Buy SpecSaver Hearing Aids so 'I Can Hear the Grass Grow'

  • The day has finally come.
    I can delay it no longer.
    I'm buying Belfast Connswater Specsaver hearing aids, so that I can hear again.
    If I had wanted to get these via our broken NHS I would be waiting 3 years.
    I'm paying £1495 for the 'Premium' set of hearing aids.
    Naturally there is no reimbursing of my money from our 'caring', Government and they will still demand my national insurance contributions to pay for a service the is not delivering. I'm only glad we have the money. So many folks do not and so cannot do what I have done!
    PS The line 'I can hear the grass grow', comes from the old well loved Move 1967 single, of the same name.

    Congratulations Tom! I know you’ve been struggling with your hearing for some time, so I hope this will be just the answer you need. Many people hesitate to get hearing assistance. I would not be one of those folks. I know I’m aging and have conditions that need attention. I’m not very happy about how fast it seems to be happening, but as they say, it is better than the alternative. It seems you’ve already begun to hear what you’ve been missing. I hope they serve you well! Good work.

      Thanks Greg. Oh I'm not a hesitator. I never cared much about the way I looked! lol I'm going to try and make my hearing aids my cool biker fashion accessory. Yes there is a real difference in the breadth of sounds I can here. I'm getting all the high pitched sounds of the birds, and rustling paper sounds and keys in my pocket and my footsteps etc now! lol

      @@TomMcClean it’s a shame your healthcare system let you down once again. But at least hearing aids are somewhat reasonably priced where you are. They are quite expensive here. The prices of them and other medication, medical accessories, etc. are all propped up by our group health plans making everything expensive as it is then paid for by insurance. So the insurance companies can charge you more in premiums and deductibles. It’s a cruel joke. But regardless, I’m glad you can hear!!! My colonoscopy went fine. Glad it is over. Getting ready for it was HORRIBLE. Thankfully I don’t have to go back for two years.

      I'm afraid everything is ultimately about making as much money off people as possible. Your system is such a scam. Ours is broken. We pay our entire lives via National Insurance but when we need medical help we are offered excuses. Oh dear. Hey getting the build up and yesterday over must have been such a relief! 2 years before you go again!!! Brilliant!

    Hi Tom , I have been wearing Phonak hearing aids since 2008 due to industrial noise causing hearing loss. I am on my third pair since that time kept my old battery ones for when I travel as they were a little more convenient than the latest rechargeable ones. I was able to pass one pair with all the accoutrements on to a person at church the plan was to have them reconfigured to suit the new owner, saved them quite a bit of money which they did not have. The new aids have blue tooth and can connect up to my laptop so I was able to listen to your video and catch every word from the Castlereagh Hills, all the best and happy listening. P.S. My wife still asks "Have you got your hearing aids in" if I try to ignore her.

      LOL Robert about your wife. I was told that my hearing aids couldn't be used by anyone else. But you are saying that they can be reconfigured. That's interesting! Wow you were able to connect them up to your laptop too via blue tooth! Wow!

    My goodness! I'm going to annoy you now Tom. Just before Covid Rosemary was referred to the hearing consultant in Craigavon Area Hospital and was seen within 2 weeks and had her hearing aids two days later. Last year she forgot to remove them in the shower and damaged one so, reluctantly, she called the hospital and was told to come in the next day and a new hearing aid, to her specs, was waiting for her. We are looked after much bett rin some areas here but there are long lists for hips etc. Rosemary couldn't believe how much hearin she had lost until she got her new hearing aids and was thrilled at the improvement. The reason she lost her hearing... working in what audiologists consider an extremely noisy enviromnent... 35 years in a school!
    And... the song brough back memories of being sick in bed the first time I heard it. LOL
    Best Wishes, Brendan.

      I am so glad Rosemary got sorted before the shutters came down so to speak. Other folk in other areas have told me that they too were able to get sorted under the NHS. That was the way it should be everywhere here. Unfortunately the provision she got was withdrawn or not available in greater Belfast. I was told 3 years waiting. Another friend was told the same. I don't quite know what is going on. It seems daft that people are being treated differently according to where they live!!!! This is clearly wrong. I've paid out now and I'm sorted, all in under a month. I can now hear fully again. I'm not going to think about the money. I'm only glad I had the cash to get it sorted, others don't and that is really bad.
      I knew you'd remember that wee song! lol

    Hi Tom, I found that very interesting and informative,as I am going to Specsavers in Connswater next week for a hearing test with the possibility of buying hearing aids.😊

      I recommend the premium which come in at £1500. I think I made a mistake in my commentary and said I had bought the plus. If possible ask for Shannon, a young lady from S Africa. She's very good. The hearing aids have made a huge difference. I wish you well.

      @@TomMcClean thanks Tom, I'll let you know how I get on. Do your aids cut out background noise?

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be quite honest Joan I don't seem to notice it. These Premium level hearing aids are meant to be suitable in all hearing situations without manual adjustment. I don't want the background bird song to be cut out and it isn't

    Hi Tom
    How are you finding the hearing aids now since first getting them?
    My husband and I are both thinking about the Advance model. We have an appointment in a few weeks time. Best wishes, Louise

      Hi Louise. I really couldn't manage being without them. They will never get you hearing back to what it was 30 years ago but they make a huge difference. You miss so much without them. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

    So glad you have got fixed up Tom,because that's one hell of a wait 3 years Anne and I have been wearing aids for quite a while now and we are both wearing Phonak aids the battery sort but Anne's are a step up from mine because she can get Bluetooth,in my case last November I lost one of mine (these are my old ones I'm talking about now) I think I lost it talking my face mask of whilst waking back to the car after a visit to the doctors then the other one packed in,fortunately we have an Hearing Aid Clinic in Scarborough so I made an appointment and within 6 weeks I got my new ones,and what a difference I can watch TV with the volume at number 16 were before it was around 21 to 24.
    You will soon get used to them good luck.

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes these wee things make some difference Chris. I didn't realize what I was missing as regards sounds around. I'm the same as regards the tv sound! I must ask the lassie about the blue tooth connection possibility. Unfortunately they are easy to misplace but costly to replace!!!!!

    • @chriswardlow9441
      @chriswardlow9441 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very costly Tom although I got mine on NHS for free if I lost one or both or broke them they work out at £80 each I have that money to stump up.

      i'm afraid I missed the deadline as regards getting my name on the NHS system. I should have applied 5 years ago but too late from me and others in the same boat now.

    Everyone waiting longer than a year for NHS treatment should be allowed to send in their private medical bills into the Dept of Health and be reimbursed. Why should we pay National Insurance for a service that isn't available to us. I have spent literally thousands over the past 4 years on private scans, injections etc and still I'm snookered by the ridiculous cost of private surgery but still have been given no date or time scale for NHS surgery. Medical no mans land.

      I agree CP. The Gov't is still charging us but they aren't delivering. This is sooooo wrong. Let people look after their own money!!! You are in a real predicament but nobody making the decisions cares a jot.

      Hi Kenny. I don't know myself why I couldn't get them on the NHS but this is what I was told. Yes I'm hearing all sorts of things now I missed before. It is strange and funny. Yes I get it when you said you thought someone was following you. I'm hearing any kind of movement and the rustling noises are strange. lol

      Found out I am eligible for a upgrade last week. Last one was 2019. You now have to make an appointment with your GP to get your ears cleaned of any wax and the eardrum is visible, after which this is put on your record. You are then able to go on the waiting list which is currently 4 months. When your appointment is due the Audiology department will contact your GP for proof you have had your ears cleaned. What a load of hassle!😊
