- I have been trying to live as free of plastic as possible for the last five years. These are a couple of simple things I do to make it do-able for me. Beeswax wraps are so useful and last for ages (and even when they get old and floppy you can just repeat the process to renew them). Making a bin bag from paper rather than plastic seems a no-brainer to me. Try it yourself.

This started a conversation between myself and hubby, what we did as families when we were kids and there was NO plastic, I'm amazed and proud of the stuff we did, then the dreaded plastic came and most of those wonderful ways went away😞, well I'm inspired to make all my friends at work little gifts of food wraps and cutlery sleeves for Christmas😀 love this idea!

What a wonderful addition to homesteader living, help the environment and save money on costly wraps. As I watched I remembered my grandmother on the farm was using those wraps for her countertop foods and for leftovers in the fridge.
I often think of the things my grandparents used/did......after all.......they needed to find ways before there was so much plastic around. :-)

This Christmas I've decided to wrap my presents up in recyclable material such as brown paper and natural ribbons and twine. So much waste at Christmas and wrapping paper can't be recycled . So I'm making changes x

Oh my goodness Vivi you've done it again! Watching that wrap dry as you wafted it was like magic! I have so much fabric piled up it would be criminal not to make some of these - paired up with some reusable mugs and cutlery they'll make perfect plastic free Christmas gifts! Thank you!

I have been trying to reduce the amount of waste my husband and I produce for about 2 years now and although we have made a big difference in our house, I feel there is lots more I could be doing. Like these wraps! I will definitely be making some of these. I would love to see more videos like this to give me some more ideas.

Your bin liner oragami is what we did as kids to make water cups. We didn't haver very clean water fountains aka bubblers, so we made paper cups for quick drinks. I still do 50 yrscon
Hahahaha - yes! We did something similar when we were kids too........the water always tasted of funky paper towels but we didn't care! ;-)
Excellent! The bin liner idea is more or less the pattern I do for seed packets. The beeswax covers are really expensive to buy out here, so I am inspired for Christmas presents. Thanks.

When I was a child we used to wrap sandwiches in greased proof paper and that worked fine. I only thought of this when I was listening to your vlog !
Same here when we were kids.......and breakfast cereals used to come in waxed paper which we always saved for sandwiches. Hopefully these practices will soon return! ;-)

You don't advertise for stupid garden gadgets that are totally unnecessary, you don't use plastic, you reuse and recycle almost everything, you advocate the truth which is the severity of our impact and consuming habits on the planet. Nice to show small tips who are good for the envirement. We all should do our very best. To grow our own food is also a contribution to that.
I try as good as possible to resirculate and use minimum of plasticstuff. I also compost all wast from my kitchen by the metode call Bokashi and use it to fertilize my beds in my garden.

The wraps are such a great idea; I will need to give them a go. Like you, I also hate having to continually pull pieces of plastic out of my garden. In the States they place small, sticky plastic labels on the skins of a lot of fruits and veg like bananas, oranges, even onions. And those labels don't break down! I try to get the labels off before putting the skins into the compost but I do miss a few. Those darn labels last years in my garden soil! I wish they'd come up with a biodegradable version if they must use them.
Absolutely!!! Why do we need our fruit and veg labelled anyway? Onwards and upwards to do what we can to reduce the plastic.... :-)

I'm so thankful for your tutorial!! Thank you so so very much dear Vivi. I'll have to find me some beeswax now and start making these cloths as I think I use way too much plastic bags and this will be the answer to me to reduce it as much as possible. I got also an eyeopener with your origami tutorial bag. I did make those to put Paul's (my dear son with adhd and aspergers) meds into to take with him. I'm going to make those now from paper for my bin in the kitchen. I've a greens waste bin on the counter it's a little one and I use compostable bags and even with it made from natural things I am not that happy about it and it was staring in front of me and you've pointed me the right way. Had to laugh at the bin liner. As kids we made paper hats that way. I've seen the wax tops on local preserves at the Farmers' Market.
I still use plastic and tins, but we recycle almost everything here, even plastic bags and over-wrap, even the foam that goes under meat in the supermarket.

I have been meaning to make some waxed covers for ages, so your tutorial came at the right time. I swore to myself that this would be the last roll of nasty cling film I ever bought. It was interesting to see you demonstrate the wax wrap in use, I didn't realise it made such a nice seal to the bowl. So no more excuses for me Vivi, I'm going internet shopping for bees wax. Hopefully I might have some left to make the callendula salve 🌻🐝💚

You can also melt the wax with an iron. I use paper and cloth to protect the iron and the ironing board but it works quite well.
Great idea......especially if you're not planning to cook anything in the over afterwards - much more economical use of electricity. :-)
Hi vivi just watched your tiy today and I cannot believe it, I only went to our local honey show on Saturday and purchased - you've guessed it waxed covers. Still they were pretty and a good cause so never mind. I have however just made an origami food waste bag thanks vivi looking forward to the next tiy

We seriously need to rework the way we manage our trash and generate trash. Seriously, buying and using new clean trash bags to dispose of trash? I stopped using trash bags. Instead I toss all of the trash in an unlined bin and dump it in the outside weekly pickup bin. We compost all unused uneaten food as we are vegetarian. Sure there might be a little sour cream or dairy or pasta left over but its so little I still compost it. It cannot really hurt. I never have critter issues. The rest gets recycled. If I need to use a trash bag I line a little basket with the odd grocery store bag and keep it under my kitchen sink. If we really think about our wasteful habits we make make a huge difference. We are killing our planet with our waste. I love these ideas. Vivi. Plastic food tubs can be used and reused for gardening and transplanting. Coffee styrofoam cups, if we must, are perfect for transplanting and can be used many times. I save mine. They are the best for transplanting deep rooted tomatoes.
Good on you for managing your waste so well.........we all really need to do more in this area. You're so right that it seems bonkers to buy a brand new, plastic bin bag just to immediately throw it away......madness. Hopefully more and more folk will start to make the little changes that add up to a big change. Here's hoping! :-)

Hi Vivi, Before this video i used shop bought beeswax wraps. I tried making them once but failed miserably ;) so thank you for showing a simple and good way to make them, I am so happy with the ones I made myself and the old ones I renewed. Then it dawned on me that though this worked so well, it still had animal products in them so why not try make vegan wraps and so I did. =) I used organic Cacao butter, the one you use when you make chocolates, you need to grate it first and it then the cotton needs a bit more than with the beeswax, also they take longer to get stiff again, but they work as good really. thanks for helping to figure out this bit of diy. I am on a roll now and will start making some for friends and family x

I went to Download again this year with my daughter and there were no plastic forks, knives, spoons or straws and you were issued with a glass you took back to refill, that's not bad for 120,000 there, a good move in the right direction, there was still plastic bottles but I thought it was a great start.

Really want to try those bees wax wraps. The bin liner is what I grew up calling a cup and if you poke the button the opposite direction of the triangle and up into the bottom of the cup it should stand. If that makes sense...kinda hard to describe. Thanks for the great videos!!!

Great video Vivi! We hate plastic too. I wish our townships would also ban plakky bags. They are so bad on every level. Our recycling programme here is a joke :-? Sadly Ontario is not very forward thinking is this respect.
I would love to see plastic bags banned too........a little over a year ago here they started to charge 5 pence per bag, supposedly to put folk off using them.........but I still see them everywhere! Ugh. :-(

I've had a close look and unfortunately there is no label but.....they feel like a wool/acrylic mix to me so I think, to be on the safe side, they aren't for you. What a pity. :-(

I remember as a kid, many many years ago, hearing they dumped garbage into the ocean and I thought it was insane. Why didn't anyone else? There's a waste co in the states that burns garbage to produce energy, Waste Management ( I don't know about their air filters). Again we in the States have recycling of plastic bags. But Styrofoam is my demon. Any suggestions on reuse?
I've always been a recycler. I compost almost all paper products, if I don't craft with it; like junk journals, memo pads, animal bedding, paper mache… There's crafts for plastic bags like making sleeping mats for the homeless or ironing 5-10 sheets together for crafts....Crafts to reuse cans and bottles too that are not recycled or returned to store (.05c deposit).
* I figured if we reuse everything just once, you cut your garbage output by half. Imagine if everyone did that.
I know folk use the styrofoam cups for starting seeds in....but, personally, I would avoid purchasing anything in it in the first place. :-)
No I don't get cups, I get tons of packing material, everything is wrapped in it. I've used packing peanuts in the base of large plants but that leads to a mess later on, I'm working on some kind of insulation?/or maybe a pet bed like melting them down to a sheet. need to form them somehow without toxic fumes.

I've seen TH-cam videos of folk making cat shelters/beds for feral cats using polystyrene for insulation............but I really wouldn't want to melt it for exactly your reason of the fumes
I'm going to use the origami bin liner to hold scraps that go into my worm bin. They're not usually very liquid so it should be ok in paper, then I can just chuck the whole packet in & they will get food & bedding in one go.

I carry a plastic bag or two and use them for months and months and never accept new ones. I also reuse my paper bags. Carrier bags. But still our plastic bin fills so quickly. All organic stuff goes in an electronic com poster and then into the planters. Coffee cups are bring my own. They fit easily in any travel bag. Wooden toothbrushes. But these are all great thoughts. Emm airline dinners?
Hahahaha - the answer to the airline dinners problem is......I don't take planes.....I use trains and boats and carry my own food/kit. ;-)
Phew just spent the morning making 28 wraps of various sizes to share between 4 as Xmas presents. One daughter is vegan so I have made them all with candelilla wax with no additions. They seem quite stiff so may add a drop of jojoba next time.For a first attempt I'm happy but await the comments of the recipients!

Hello, the wraps are a really nice idea - can I suggest to be more environmentally friendly it is best to use fabrics that are not commercially printed/dyed. The synthetic dyes used on these pretty fabrics are not so good for the environment. Better to use plain cotton and perhaps if you want other colours use natural dyes. Your onion skins or calendula flowers, or many other things that you grow, would make great dyes. Very easy to do. If using commercially printed fabrics always wash well first, otherwise when you put them in the oven they may give off nasty chemicals. Thanks for your videos, I hope you don't mind me making these suggestions. I will certainly me making some wraps.

Reusability is absolutely key as you say. I wonder if you could feasibly layer up the wax & fabric. Setting the tins in a basin of very hot water as they come out of the oven to keep the wax soft? Thanks for this!

I had been meaning to make these ever since I first saw them but "never found the time". You inspired me and I got right up, went to my stash of fabric and craft items and made 6 7" bowl covers and 4 10" bowl covers out of a yard of material in about a half an hour. Thanks, Vivi, for being my inspiration to get stuff done!
BTW, I got my beeswax pastilles at mountainroseherbs.com, where you can buy them by the pound. They're actually cheaper than by the ounce there. I'm pretty sure they're organic, as everything else Mountain Rose sells is.

Vivi how do they hold out in the hot summers? We have very hot summers here at in summer it can be as hot as 35 degrees celcius in house. Will they stick together? Will the wax melt out?
I've not had any issues with them this summer.....and it got to 40* + at times up in my cottage in the sky. :-)

I love this! I mad some of the bowl covers a few years ago, but I got nuts with the beeswax and they are sort of "brittle" and won't seal well. Wonder if I could reheat them in the oven and allow some of the excess wax to drip out? Great video!
Give it a go popping them back in the oven........it can be a bit of trial and error but worth it when you get the amounts just right. Have fun. :-)

There is a video for squash storing (in the section called 'Storing my produce'......for the spuds it's simply a case of keeping them in their paper sacks somewhere cool and dark. :-)
We have just banned supermarket plastic bags here. I purchased paper straws for our weekend smoothies.
Hurrah for the bag ban! Paper straws are so much better than plastic........and it is now possible to buy metal straws so they're reusable time and time again. :-)
Hi Vivi can the waxed fabric discs be used to cover Homemade jams and preserves great video xx☺
You could use them to cover them once they're open and in the fridge.......but not for the preserving phase as you won't get a good enough seal/sterility. :-)
Like you, I have tried to be plastic free ( we even limit our paper and glass recycling as much as possible -- its actually a fun challenge) since I was a teenager (in the 80's ), and now that I am looking after my mother in law who needs diapers it horrifies us to throw three away every day.. Do you know if there is a source (or way of making my own) washable adult nappies? I looked and looked for information, but am guessing the amount of urine a grown-up makes is too much (unlike a baby) to be contained by fabric? Don't know why I didn't think to ask you about this sooner. You are such a source of information, and inspiration to me.
Ach, the adult pad problem does my nut.......I've tried to look for reusable ones plus washing service but haven't found anything (I'm glad to say this is not the case with baby nappies anymore - so many easy to access services....). I'll keep looking and report back if I find anything. Hmm, maybe this is a service we should start???

Yes, always cut beer can loops and crush tin cans so wildlife don't get them wedged on noses/snouts. Good on you for collecting rubbish. :-)
To make a bigger one could you not just double it over in the oven putting the wax inside?
I made a really huge one a few weeks back by doing just that, putting some extra pellets of beeswax inside the folds. It soon soaks through to coat all of the fabric. I now wrap my homemade bread in my enormous wax wrap instead of just a tea-towel, and the bread stays really fresh for days. Bonus!
If anyone wants to make a vegan version of these, soy wax also works really well instead of beeswax. Happy wrapping.

You can, so long as it is food grade paraffin wax.........but I would stick with the beeswax as the whole point of these wraps is to move away from petroleum based products. :-)
Good question - as being a vegan means I avoid beeswax- but then there’s the issue with petrochemicals. It’s so hard!
