Well...another wonderful recipe. I literally just made it right now...ver yummy! Although, I am earlier than you by a couple hours or so since I live in America...I had it as a brunch😊 It will be added to my dinner menu for tonight. I'm sure my husband will love it. Thank you!!

It just seems so redundant...both are sources of protein, plus beans offer lots of fiber and none of the trans fats of meat.
I love that you still have onions! And we both love chilli, and use runners and borlotti. We've just made soup with and roasted for freezing one of our remaining Crown Prince pumpkins as it had just started to rot.
It is soooooo satisfying to still be cooking with last year's harvests isn't it?! The onions are still so juicy and pack a flavour punch. I'm also really pleased with how the peppers froze (I had never frozen one before)......they retain something of their bite and all of their sweetness........I'll hopefully grow lots more this year now that I know. Hope you enjoyed your squash soup - one of the best! ;-)
Evening vivi 🙋, been sowing indoors myself today as it’s bucketing down. Checked the plot I dug over again a few days ago and my feet sank into it 😡😤, blinking miserable to say the least. Your doing the right thing making a big pot of chilli, I love it on days like this (which is turning into weeks lol). I also like your version as I don’t like kidney beans yuk! That looks delicious. I went to the garden yesterday in a break between showers, with such big plans.........but of course it was too wet to do much of anything.......the chilli was a welcome scoff when I got home. Fingers crossed we dry out soon and actually get a bit of sunshine! :-)

Well now you've done it again! I had written off growing peppers after last years pitiful harvest of three - and that was in the greenhouse - but how lovely to be able to pop that little bit of summer out of the freezer! I've been given some seeds so might give them another chance outside - and cross all there is to cross. And thanks for reminding me of TVP - I haven't had it for a long time but it was certainly a staple when my daughter was at home (or at least until the 'Q' word came along - a friend of mine has terrible allergic reactions to that which makes you wonder ...) Won't be long now Vivi - if I do a little sundance up here and you do one down there we might just get something ;)
Oooh, yes, give the peppers another go......they were so gorgeous fresh but they also froze really well.....I'm hoping to double the amount this year. If this year ever starts! So fed up with these grey damp days.......I think the whole country needs to join in the sundance!!! Happy pottering indoors until the deluge recedes........ :-)

We have had a bit snow the last few days, it hasn’t lain but it’s so miserable 😩 I can’t wait to get my hands into warm soil, yearn yearn 🤗.but for now just made an aubergine curry for tea, like you yearning for comfort food lol! I love veg chilli one of our weekly family staple meals. Blessings and love xx

You make me laugh Vivi! I love chili that much also when I make it. I'm down to a few jars of corn, tomatoes, and my last jar of blackberry jam. Was a great harvest last year, looking forward to this year! We had a surprise warm dry day today, was suppose to be rain showers. Hubby took the day off and we finished another raised bed and I sowed seeds for a couple hours. Ahhh bliss.... Have a wonderful day, off to bed for me.😆

As an omnivore, my chili is made with beef or lamb. Both home grown so good for the food miles. Also, most chilis that I have made or seen tend to be a whole lot wetter than that. Still looked good though . The lovely thing about chili is that you can make it as hot or as mild as you like. You would likely not like my chili as I am a confirmed chili head.
Hahaha - chilli head - I like that! Yes it's lovely with chickpeas too......I basically add any beans/peas that I have to hand or if I have soaked some overnight for another meal and there are leftovers they get chucked in too. This one can be made much wetter but I prefer it more stodgy......like my porridge. ;-)

Vivi, I actually got my potato bed prepared to plant the potatoes. I'm not going to plant them today, which is Good Friday the traditional day to plant them in my area, because the soil temperature is still a chilly 40F (4.5C) degrees. Maybe another week or so to give them a little better start. The crocus and daffodil are blooming with hyacinth and tulips not for behind. Spring has kind of arrived with temps in the 50s (10-12C) during the days but still dips down to almost freezing at night. It was so refreshing to be able to turn the soil and smooth it out with a rake for planting. Today, we have some much needed sunshine here to perk up all of our spirits.
I still had some nasty old dried up weeds from last fall that I was going to use the trimmer to cut down. I was so excited about being able to get in the garden that I pulled too hard on the starting cord and broke it. I purchased a new cord and took the recoil assembly apart to replace the cord. If one is careful and delicate enough, the cord can be replaced without removing the spring. That coiled up spring is the Tasmanian Devil of gas powered implements. And well, I'm not a delicate person so that $@%& thing jumped out of it's little nest and snarled up in a twisted mess. I may have uttered a very unchristian word when that happened. Oh, well, been there done that before so in a hour it was all back together and runniing just fine. All is well that ends well so they say. Who every they is.

I couldn't help but giggle at the picture in my mind of you wrestling with the Tasmanian Devil springy thingy! Gosh, it must have felt good to be put there with a little sunshine too.........happy days! :-)
English hubby is so glad to live in Australia (although our heat waves can be oppressive). I remember the chill reaching my bones when I was living there. There are different types of cold and I believe Canada has crisp dry cold that doesn't get to the bones, and they take house heating and appropriate clothing a lot more seriously than UK. I also met a lot of young women who were vegetarian and passionate about animals. I've never really come across this movement here in Australia.
Yes.....it's definitely the damp, greyness which gets into the bones! Oh for a sunny day sooooooooooon! ;-)

Such a coincidence, I made a similar dish today. Gotta admit it's my first time using tvp and i really liked it! YAY! I wanted a stew type thing and it just morphed into a chili with lentils and white beans. Hubby loved it and that's all that matters right now because I'm really trying to get him on the veggie wagon. He's such a good sport ;-) Anyway, Vivi, thanks for another fun and entertaining vid!

I often use oats in my chili as the 'meat'- don't know if you use grains, but use same as well.
I don't use many grains......rice mainly, but I do use oats in my breakfast 'smoothie'.....yum. :-)
Try bulgar sometime. It’s a great thickener for chili.
*Vivi* in growing fava and lima beans for the first time . What's the one piece of advice you can give me so hopefully I don't fail. Its in the high 30s and into the 60s now. Last frost date is April 20th. Thank you for any advice. Asking you because yours always look so healthy.
I think beans are pretty straightforward and easy to grow.........they like a lot of moisture and muck so if you can make a trench where you plan to plant them and fill it with compost/kitchen scraps/torn up wet newspaper etc then cover back over with soil they should be perfectly happy. Good luck with them. :-)

I'm just having a you fix today on the food.i can't wait for this.i used to years ago too and sosmix,that's all there was but I do find tvp soaks up all the flavours nicely.would you say yours is nearly a vegan diet if you just eat your veg near enough? And how do you feel eating that way.im on a journey and a new chapter is starting soon☺️🐕
I do eat a mostly vegan diet as the vast majority of my food is plant based but I do still occasionally have some cheese. I find it a perfectly satisfying diet.......but I've eaten this way for decades so it's hard to remember (childhood) eating any meat.... 😊
I've used tvp a lot in the past, but I've been worried with negative news about soy? Wanted to ask you about what if anything to avoid? Edamame, soy milk, tofu, tvp?
- I make chili with some chocolate (baking cocoa) and a bit of wine. Our (US) chili powder is not hot so I use a lot, but I have bought some imported chili powder, that was like cayenne, so hot I couldn't use. fyi: Kidney beans can be toxic (Lectins) much better to use another bean, I use pinto.
- Do you ever make seitan, with wheat gluten? Or use miso? Have you made chickpea cheese?
I don't avoid any of those soy products as such......they simply aren't a part of my diet. I don't bother with edamame beans as I grow so many other beans for myself, I don't drink milk and I rarely (less than once a year!) eat tofu as it is quite expensive.....the tvp only tends to go in 'winter' type meals so it's not a huge consumption.... :-)
I'm just so frustrated with food in general, everything that was touted as so great for you 10+ years ago... whole wheat, soy, seitan, rice and beans, are all now listed on the enemy list.(Ck out lectins and kidney beans) I'm not even vegetarian, but I try to reduce intake of crap that will kill me, and make a lot of meat-less meals.
I hope your TVP is organic... or not from the US. Over here, the soybeans are GMO and slathered with glysophate.

I can't wait to make chili...but without the chili pepper, maybe just a pinch of black pepper. Yes, that's how violently I react to hot spicy food.
I'll be using dried beans but I still haven't found the right cooking time for them so that they are not mushy but al dente. How long do you cook dried beans? Or, do you only use fresh or frozen?

Hi Caroline. Cooking time varies so much by different varieties of beans....and their size etc. There are lots of cooking times guides on the internet......I use the guides and cook for the minimum time (important!) and try one or two.....sometimes I feel they're done at that stage, sometimes I leave for a little longer.......it always seems to vary.....
I never thought of cooking the beans from Runner Beans, do they taste nice?

You can also let the Runner Beans ripen and dry.

With us in Germany, many people let the beans ripen and then store the seeds. They taste delicious.

As Claudia said. I usually store most of my beans dry but also freeze a few 'green'......it means I don't always have to think forward about cooking and soaking dry beans overnight etc.....I can just grab a few from the freezer. They taste absolutely fine. :-)
Love this! Wow. TVP is one of those things I've seen but never given consideration of using my whole life. Vivi, darling, have you ever given any thought to using a dehydrator vs freezing to store your food and reduce your carbon footprint, etc.? For things like garlic, onions, peppers, even squash or potatoes. Just curious.
For those veg you mentioned I wouldn't dehydrate them as they store really well for me just as they are.........and the vast majority of my beans get stored dry. Hmmmm, not sure I would get the dehydrator as I need the freezer anyway for when I make big batches of soups and curries etc......... :-)
Notforprofittho: Dehydrators use a LOT of electricity to dry watery foods out, don't forget, and hardly anything is delicious after being dehydrated except jerky & tomatoes & mushrooms, really. My little 27-yr old chest freezer uses $22 of electricity a year. A YEAR. That's not a very big carbon footprint.
Also, the freezer runs whether it's full or not, so fill it up and keep it full! The only way to "save" is to unplug it and give/sell it to someone else who WILL use it, cancelling out your 'virtue'.
So who in their right mind would abandon their freezer-workhorse when it does a brilliant job of keeping entire homemade meals & bakery goods for us? One batch of sinful cookies can now last me 3 months, none of this eating them all before they go stale. Freeze up lasagnas made in advance, make fruity popsicles. I can bake 4 loaves of bread at once, freeze 3, use the oven ONE TIME. Thaw frozen food in fridge, which helps keep the fridge cold, saving fridge electricity. Freezers save money every which way you turn. Every home should have one.
Hello Vivi. One question about your onions. Do you start the roots indoors and then plant them out with the roots set already, or just put them into the ground ? I just got my onion sets and they are rootless but it's also probably still too cold to put them in the ground.
I plant my sets outside, directly (no roots)....I've just planted mine now as our night time low temps are about 4-5 degrees and they will be fine with that.......they're quite hardy little things. :-)

Hi Vivi! I am a little late catching up on the videos -- no internet service! When you freeze your peppers, do you just cut them up and freeze? Any other prep before the freezer?
They couldn't be easier........cut out the seeds (set aside to dry to plant next year!), chop the flesh, whack it in the freezer. Done. Yum. :-)

I think the trick with TVP is to not overcook it and I rehydrate in the seasoned broth not water. Its really the texture youre after.
