- The Kia EV9 is big, bold, and battery powered - but what's it like to drive? Well, there's only one way to find out!
Gav took this giant seven-seater for a blast, testing out its gadgets & performance to see how this behemoth operates on New Zealand roads. The verdict is that it's impressive, not only in stature but also in comfort & technology. But it does have one major flaw...

Gavin, you are brilliant, so refreshing, and an amazing presenter. More Mass than a Pope on Sunday, my gadget gland is tingling, 700 torqueing Issac Newtons… and the pornographic memory had me laughing out loud (and I’m on my own!)… it goes on and it’s unique in the car reviewing world… you are definitely my favourite out of all the top motoring journalists… in the world. As soon as I see your review is released I can’t wait to hear the comedic gold that is delivered naturally - and it works. Thank you.
It was the “Fartment” that got to me. (From OZ)
fartment is the Gav classic@@crb456 but he did miss saying his old seated heats.
No, no - talking Isaac Newtons. Chatting about the acceleration of the 2.6 tonnes. "If I was to drop aa feather and a Kia EV9, which one would hit the earth first?"
"Like making love to R2D2" 😂 I love it. Yeah, I can relate to that as the Ioniq 6 does the same. I have tamed it (a little) via Bluelink settings, and have sort of gotten used to it after 5 months. I have been tamed in my excessively sneaky speed-limit busting 🤭🥴
I would include Jack Scarlett from Fully Charged up there with Gav, and they are streets ahead of the rest. Matt Watson from Carwow sometimes does come close, but not as consistent.
More Cocoon'd than Wilfred Brimley. Very obscure Gav. Not sure anyone but me will remember a 1985 film...😂
Everly time I watch one of Gavs reviews, I say best yet but truly this us the funniest and bestist yet....
Always a pleasure to watch your reviews.
Awesome piece of engineering and a pleasure to drive. Love the one-liners as always!
Excellent review (and funny), right up there with the Edmunds and Fully Charged.
Gavin's reviews are always the best! An expensive car, but given how feature-packed it is, I think it's better value than some of the similarly-priced rivals. A lot of creature comforts, I think this would be a very easy car to live with - love the 230v plug in the back. The beeping and bonging would drive me mad, but maybe Kia will dial this back in a future update. The low drag coeffecient was a definite surprise!
Your reviews are some of the best on the tube for sure. Even if i live in Sweden, i prefer to checkout your reviews insteed of the one from EU. You should have 25 million subs, not 25k, the production quality is awesome and you are also a funny guy, witch helps for sure.
Your jokes and puns are superb in this one.
Behemoth ! LOL! Stand it next to a RIVIAN R1T or R1S or a FORD F150 LIGHTNING and it looks like an Ora Funky Cat.
Fantastic review and someone in Australia did a towing test with their 2tonne caravan. They got 300km range so better than 50% which is the usual when you tow with an EV. My only gripe is the camera mirrors don't like them in any car and I know Hyundai had complaints about them in their Ioniq 5 so made them an optional extra rather than forcing them on people. It will be interesting what Hyundai do with their equivalent of the EV9, assume the Ioniq 7 or 9.
Its likely that the more brick-like a car is, the less relative effect a trailer or caravan has. Same thing with ICE vans dont get a lot worse mpg with a trailer behnind... Its already distrubing all that air.
I want, i want, i want. Best video yet..again
Brilliant review. Better than mine for sure !!! :)
Great review! Addressed everything I wanted to know about the ev9....but can you turn the beeping off?? Imagine it would get annoying pretty damn quick.
Great review now I'd like to have you do a head to head review with the LDV MIFA9
Cheers
6:38 “even though I have a phonographic memory” 😜 haha
A great looking and performance EV 👌
did you just say pornographic memory ??????🤣🤣 @6.38
I was literally thinking is that what he said… so I put on subtitles and sure enough it says pornographic memory hahahahaha.
Hi Gavin. Thanks for the review! Do you have any more info on the Kia Connect app introduction in NZ that you referenced at 7:15 ?
Gav, what a legend! Unlocked a new level of metaphors. LOL
Great review, although I missed the seated heats ;-) Have to ask, do they give you a spud budget for your vids? Buying that many potatoes, in this economy?! :-D
Just letting you Kiwis know 'Drive' here in Aus has given this EV the COTY award, and John Cadogan doesn't like it one bit. He made a video.
Seeing as how no EV enthusiast is likely to watch a John Cadogan video that's a bit of a wasted effort on his part.
@@HarmLessSolutionsNZ Seeing as how he has 51k views and 836 comments in 2 days you have no idea what you are talking about.
@@aussieideasman8498 Cardogan derives an income from ICEVs so is critical of EVs and he uses EV FUD as clickbait for his postings. Big on opinion but lacking in accuracy as is typical for non-EV owning 'experts' these days.
@@HarmLessSolutionsNZ "Cardogan derives an income from ICEVs" It's actually from both ICE and EV - he doesn't care which.
"so is critical of EVs and he uses EV FUD as clickbait for his postings." No, he's a lot like me - we accept the good with the bad whichever car it is. And both of us don't like zealots who sugar coat the bad.
"Big on opinion but lacking in accuracy" I don't take any notice of someone who says another lacks accuracy until I see some examples. Until then - it's pure gossip.
"as is typical for non-EV owning 'experts' these days." I own an EV and I have made two videos about how crap it is to road trip in. It's better than ICE when used locally, but the videos were about road trips. JC has also been loaned an EV for a year, as well as a few other shorter term, and he says there is a lot to like about them but he still will tell you what's wrong with them. It's the deranged zealots on both sides who lead others astray.
Great review. Beeps are definitely a deal breaker - wouldn’t even test drive. Hopefully they can fix this.
All new cars beep, ICE or EV. My Ioniq 6 is ok, not too intrusive but it does keep me awake and aware which is a good thing.
What no pick up the family test in the car?
❤ welcome
Cheers
All this time i have to suffer soggy hasbrowns cooking them in a frypan,! when i could use a toaster! thats why im here, lifehacks!
Says it will go 0-100kph in around 6 seconds at the same time the counter says 4.9 seconds
6:14 That word is parallax! Or at least that's how I'd describe it.
Honestly I wish you could option remove the side view cameras in the GT-Line, but i suppose the next spec down is probably the pick of the bunch anyway.
I really think Kia should add some soft touch material at the sides in the trunk and rearseat area. It will become scratched fast especially if you have kids.
👍 for Kia
Hiw come it got only 5 in value? Is there really a cheaper EV 7-seater ss good?
Does anyone know if it’s possible to turn off all of the safety pings? 🔔
I’ve watched plenty of reviews of this car, this is the first time I’ve seen one where the car has camera mirrors, they aren’t well integrated into the cabin.
Haven’t you already driven an EQE SUV, they decouple the front wheels when they aren’t required.
You can blame the new EU rules for all the beeps, all 2024 cars sold in they EU and UK come with mandatory over speed warning, lane departure warning and some other safety crap, you can turn it off, which you have to do every time you get start it.
6:39 - Gav...... we always knew your memory was "pornographic", but do you need to promote it on the internet? 😛
I looked for this comment. So I know I'm not alone and I heard it well😅
Great machine .. but lacking a huge part in NZ with no Kia connect…. Perhaps reviewers can expose this, and put pressure on Kia and retrofit when it’s available.
YIKES! that constant beeping would drive me bonkers! Are you CERTAIN there is no option to turn all, or most, off?
That shape and colour makes it look more like an army truck.
Tesla and polestar, among otters, have front motor decouplers
love one..... but no chance at that price.
Great review as always but I do not envy the person who pays for the tyres on those things. 2.6T and more than $100000 who is going to buy that thing?
Hi Gav, you have more PUNS than bakeries have BUNS
Think Kia has their wires crossed no way the GT Line with 21" wheels gets better mileage than the Earth with 20" wheels. Everything else is the same
Ahhh, what kind of memory do you have?
Another great car from Kia, I would choose this over a Tesla
lol except you get much better value for money with a Tesla. $130k for a Kia people mover? Not likely.
@@laurencejenner1127 I mean an EV6....now that is a better car than a clunky Tesla
Blame the UK/EU for all the beeps. However blame Kia for not allowing them to be turned off easily.
Potatorific
Hmmm, a bit too expensive!
What’s with the fungus, Gav? 😶
Don’t blame the car for the incessant “bings and bongs”. Kia is only doing what the overzealous pointyheaded bureaucrats require in the ADAS for a car to get a 5 star safety rating. Most new cars that have 5 stars suffer from the same thing. Maybe it’s time for crash worthiness to be separated from electronic “safety” systems in the rating? The bureaucrats think they are being clever by the systems resetting every time you start the car, but all it does is piss drivers off while they spend about a minute turning all those warnings off.
They can't even get the steering wheel in the correct side. Serious quality control issues!!!
That's a lot of plastic on that interior.
2.6 tonnes. They need an extra road user charge for the damage they are doing
Still nothing compared to trucks.
@ yeah but it’s not a truck. What is it with TH-cam comments !!!
@@morri03 Damage to the road is an absolute thing. If you go there with 1 million bikes, it will not make a dent. Same thing here, apparently they know that cars makes more or less no damage to roads compared to heavier vehicles.
@ true trucks are worse but the ev9 would do about 4 times as much damage as an average car. So the point is ,and I can’t believe I have to spell it out for you, unnecessarily heavy passenger vehicles are a bad thing for every reason. Efficiency, handling, performance, braking and damage to the roading infrastructure
Any weight
Too hideous for my driveway.
Ho, hum. Wake me up when you have an Aptera please.
Okay, but Rip Van Winkle will wake up first.
@@aussieideasman8498 Maybe...
It's overpriced by about 40-25%
Wow. Woke reporting. To think this vehicle is according to you such an environmentally friendly is wrong. The carbon footprint to build such a car is far worse than any others. Your batteries when they need to be replaced are an environmental disaster. Of course I bet the replacement batteries are over $50000 And to use these needed fast chargers are powered by fossil fuels. This is such an inefficient vehicle when you take into account the inputs required to build and run it. But of course you are sponsored by the machine promoting misinformation about EVs
3.2 T?! so HEAVY, I know why the RUC must be applied!
I think he said 2.5 tonnes. A BMW X5 petrol is about 2.2 and the PHEV version about the same as the Kia. If you want a tank of a car with 7 seats, they are nearly all over 2 tonnes.
@@Nurton83carjam reports all the details of this EV9
Does CarJam claim its 3.2 tonnes?
I believe its actually 2.7t
Same weight as landcruiser
I must be getting deaf… pornagraphic memory? 🥸
