they do have the same roots, they both started in the same place but spread apart. Same with spanish believe it or not. But most people in germany are required to learn english as a second language in there schools thats why lots of them know english well.
I've found with a lot of German people they pick up English really well, I think because English and German both have the same roots in language, I also think that English speakers would be able to pick up German as well
