- Thomas The Tank and Diesel what's inside overhaul inspection to see how they have failed after playing in the pool on my custom pool Tracks railway. Whats most alarming is how quickly this toy destruction has set up. My Thomas Trackmaster 2 toys have only one Summer of Pool Tracks fun and they were busted. While my Classic Trackmaster Thomas has survived 4 Summers of pool play without missing a beat. The same can be said for Boco and TOMY Gordon. Seeing what I discovered does paint a curious picture of the Thomas & Friend Trackmaster 2 toy. Sure it's never designed for water play but look how water is trapped inside the toy if it does go for a Thomas adventure. I will convert the Essential Engines Gift Pack to play pool tracks. Sodor Race Day Thomas, Percy, James, Gordon and Diesel will be specially altered to make them more water friendly. I'll be honest here I never expected Trackmaster 2 to fail so quickly, if you are going to play Pool Tracks maybe it's best to use TOMY Thomas or Classic Trackmaster. Sadly every Trackmaster 2 Thomas toy I have that entered the pool is destroyed. The water trapped in the motor area is impossible to repair.

I developed Pool Tracks as a way to encourage my son to play in the pool. He was developing a fear of water and swimming. Getting his favourite toy trains to float and work in the pool was the perfect distraction to give him confidence with water. Over the past few summers we discovered the floating Pool Tracks became the most fun in the pool. It really transformed the way you play with toy trains. The Pool Tracks conversion for Thomas Trackmaster 2 is the best because of the way Trackmaster 2 track parts connect. I'm still to develop a system for the TOMY blue track.

Be very careful if your Trackmaster 2 toys get any water play. It has some serious flaws in design that allow for water to be trapped, this will destroy the toy.

Rusty Battery damage
This proves that these toy makers don't even care. I had my classic tomy Thomas for 10 years. I've dropped it, put it in water, left it out in the sun etc..
After all that it still works like a charm and my brother got a trackmaster 2 Thomas 3 years ago and after he dropped it his face and a wheel broke off. This is never going to replace the classics

WD-40 would only stop the rust from accumulating. For waterproofing, maybe drill some drainage holes and spray all the contacts with WD-40. Spraying the motor might help too.

Looks like it's time for a new motor to be installed. I remembered the time when a few of my tomy Thomas trains had this problem when went to play them outside, but this has never happened to me before. Well, barely.

Back then they actually cared about making Thomas the tank engine into a playset, with everything from Sodor. Now today, poor Thomas has always got to be in some sort of action packed adveture
This really explains and shows the money worth of trackmaster classic and it is amazing to see the damage that can happen and I had a trackmaster skarloey and it was in the pool and it still works after 5 years which also shows the real cheaping in trackmaster 2

Leo, I may have a streamlined solution to your water and corrosion issues for your toys or any toys you may want to give extra Umph in corrosion resistance.
1.) Remove all necessary components from said toys; knolling each separately in ways you’d feel easiest to work with without losing track Mask all the toy exteriors with a thorough masking tape job.
2.) cover all exposed metal terminals and connections with liquid latex ( this removes the hassle of having to mask every individual component with masking tape, it’s easily removable. Also it allows you to cover holes that may be present in the outside cover of the motor.
3.) sand everything down with a relatively high grit paper about 600-1000 grit and make sure to wipe it with windex to remove particles and grease.
4.) spray at least 3-5 layers of your average water resistant clear coat that’s safe of plastics and metals. This will highly protect your metal components like the shell of the motor. Let it dry of course over night.
5.) remove all liquid latex that has been covering all the terminals and holes that you covered.
6.) Cover those terminals and connections or anywhere electricity may need to flow with Aluminum tape (over here in California it can be found at the dollar store). Of course be careful not to short-circuit any of the connections. ALUMINUM TAPE is awesome because current can flow through it without issue.
7.) Remove any masking tape from Thomas’ beautiful factory finish (or whichever toy)! That was not destroyed because it was masked off.
That in addition to your fixes such as allowing the water to drain may indeed increase the life of any toy not already designed to be in the water!

Trackmaster originals are the best Thomas motorized ever. When they switched to Trackmaster 2, they lost my support for the trackmaster range at that point. I love my son's collection of Trackmaster original toys (he's a freshman at the high school where I work as the assistant principal), but we both love trains, so he is not afraid to show his childhood toys on display on a shelf when friends come over to visit.

I have an idea: cut holes about the size of the end of a Popsicle Stick in the areas where water builds up. This should help the water get out easier and stop toy distraction.

Well, you really tested these toys! One of my old Take Alongs that had batteries got water damaged years ago, and didn't hold up!
Hot glue around the motor but not on connection terminals or shaft? They also make a water proofing spray for circuit boards used to water proof electronics. Maybe using a layer of that spray would keep water from making contact with the motor? Those engine shells may make cool HO conversions. Either those or maybe a new lego set of axles may give those another shot on the rails
The water allows galvanic corrosion to occur (batteries also accelerate the process).
EDIT: The polarity of charges is very important in galvanic corrosion which explains the why a single terminal is so much rusted than the other.
It also explains why your screws aren't rusted to death

Drainage hole would be my solution lol. You may be able to improve the contacts with some electronics cleaning kits, though there isn't much for protection.
Life lesson, do not put trackmaster 2 trains in water they will get rusted and will never run again

That's such a contrast wow. I wonder if it's just a matter of drainage, or if the actual cables/wiring system changes the effect corrosion has... I imagine all the exposed metal (no insulted wiring to keep the water out) doesn't help either. Sad story indeed, looks like TM2 is not going in the pool!

I've actually had experience with my Trackmaster 2 Thomas base because of water damage and other damages, seeing what yours has went through, I'm surprised mine was even able to work, I'm talking every type of damage possible.

Ive found some motors that look like they would work in your trackmaster 2 thomas and probably give it more power its called mini 4wd
Problem is the motor is not that far off the price of a whole new Thomas. I know which one I would choose.

here is an idea. build a box around the motor. you also will have to run 2 metal pieces through the top of the box to connect the motor to the batteries. you will have to glue and seal the box to the case to prevent water contact.

Its best to drill a hole or 2 in the bottom for the water to escape. But the main difference is that the original Thomas Trackmaster doesn't have a motor like the new one does, as the old one has the weird box thing. There's not much to corrode on that and there's no reservoir where the motor is in where the water can't escape from. With the new thomas they are. But drilling a few holes in the bottom should prevent the motor from dying. Those motors are easily replaced, fyi.

Leo here's an Idea remember the Mega Trackmaster rives you did with some of the shots you pulled out the faker Thomas's kog gear gear so he could free wheel well if you take out the a Trackmaster 2 engines motor it can free wheel and the trackmaster 2 engines that can free wheel and be pulled by string are trains I like to call Pull String Thomas's so the rusted up Thomas what you can do is take out the motor do some modifications and make that rusted Thomas look like how plarail make there trains pls I recommend you try it!
