If you notice: All of the songs that were nominated for a Grammy were unexpected huge pop hits. To this day, I am still stunned those songs got heavy rotation on Pop radio because there was nothing that was commercial about any of those songs.
Well, Hip Hop Hooray was clearly made for the charts, not just as a lead single for "the streets", so to speak. It's still a dope song, but it's pretty obvious they were going for a repeat of O.P.P. with that one.
some will take this as an oldhead swipe at the state of hip-hop lately, but... we were really privileged in the late 80's-early 90's (Golden Era) to have so much variety. from production styles, influences, cadence, substance/topics, visual styles, patterns, geological vernacular differences, etc - it was all welcomed, yet still all felt true to progress of the art. it's why i'm so glad to see/support creative/unique artists like Oddisee, Doechii, Tobe, Sa-Roc, etc ...who maybe don't get as much popular shine as Kendrick, but have so much more depth, skill, & heart than ones like Drake.
i feel what your getting at but i hope u do understand how oldhead of a perception this is. if you were more informed and involved in the climate of rap now, there’s more variety and quality within the variety than ever (heavily due to the influence of the traditional hiphop and natural progression of sub-genres)
One of the best albums where jazz and hip hop complement each other so perfectly. For these reasons (and many many more) it's that I love your channel, Brandon.
The best Digable Planets track is a non-album track from the sadly out of print album Inner City Blues: Music of Marvin Gaye. They do a cover of Marvin, You're the Man that has to be hear to be belived. Don't sleep on this one, it's not available on any streaming service so good luck crate digging!!!
Goodness I had this album on near constant repeat in 6th grade, it was huge for me! Walking around with my Sony Discman 😂 Got my jazz musician Dad to sit down and check it out on his own too. Once I started playing bass, you know the sample on this song is one of the first things I tried to learn. This was great. Thanks!
Yes! Instant like. I heard this very tune and saw the video on MTV back when it released. Never left my mind and picked up the album a few years later. The 2nd album 'Blowout Comb' is arguably even better. Amazing sampling, lyrics and beats.
Thanks for this! I remember how a high school classmate of mine in the early 2000s was a big fan of them, and clearly into them for more than just this song. I also got more into hip-hop through the jazz-rap style, my gateway was A Tribe Called Quest's Midnight Marauders, courtesy of my sister's boyfriend making me a tape of it when I was 15.
Huge fan of the Digable Planets, whom I followed since their first single. Their second album is an absolute milestone that is undeservedly ignored. Their demise came in the wake of the grand commercial steam-roller that were the Fugees. For 2-3 years it seems, no indie group could survive the lowbrow, easy cross-over concocted by Wyclef and his gang. There was an alternative, nascent vibe on the East Coast that got wiped out, the only trace of it that continued to thrive was NAS, Wu Tang and a handful of others that weren't jazzy and poetic, maybe to the exception of The Roots.
I DJ'ed a few shows for Doodlebug and Abstract Artform in Toronto for their project Living Proof. He's a dope cat, super chill. We played 'Hip Hop Food' in the car ride to and from the gigs.
i use to watch MTV for hours trying to catch this video. i loved ladybug "I'm down like that I'm black like that"❤🖤💚 i actually loved any female MC that could hold her own with the fellas
Still have this on CD. Back then hip hop was something else. Don’t want to sound like a Granny but just take the lyrics! And now put some 2024 tracks on. Kendrick is good, couple of others and the rest is just 💀
Have been waiting for this video. Thank you so much for keeping your word. That upright bass plus the lyrics. Digable Planets will always be refreshingly unique. Nice one.
(AHHHH, YES....) Couple Digable Planets with groups like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Black Sheep, & Arrested Development &.... 'THERE You Have IT, Folks'!!!! The 'QUINTESSENTIAL HIP-HOP ALTERNATIVE' to Mainstream Rap, which All & All was 'Diversifiably Great' in itself from that Golden Era, Thankfully Capsuled on Records, CD's, & 'CLASSIC Musical Retrospectives' like This Here! #DTG 💿📻🎶🎙 #IsAMustFaSho.... 💯🙌🏽😎✌🏽
I don’t recall seeing these guys at all in the UK. I only know this song thanks to the Spotify algorithm (I know, I know…). Better late than never, so thank you once again for a fantastic and illuminating video.
As a bass player, there is nothing like really hearing an upright bass well recorded. I remember when I first heard this song I recognized the sample and the change to the time. There were several jazz samples that came around but none were quite as successful as this song.
Ish is awesome man. I've met him a few times and he's always been so friendly and approachable. If y'all haven't, make sure you bump some Shabazz Palaces, a duo Ish leads. Their debut Black Up, is one of my favorite albums ever. The range he had is wild!
The first time I heard this was I was ten & they were walking to the stage to accept an award. The coolest tune they played all night. I wore that part of the tape right out haha
Watching this, which was a great breakdown of the song itself made me think. I would like to see you do an episode on Del the Funky Homosapien song “Catch a Bad One”. No rush though😊
It's 1 minute in and my nostalgia levels are off the charts🥲 I remember this whole thing as being at my grandparents house as a little kid and i wish i could talk to them again to find out why
I would like a crossover with doctor mix. My two favorite TH-cam channels are the only ones I am subscribed to. Keep up the good work, my friend. Quality will always stand out and take you where you want to go You'll make it, you'll see. Cheer up! Greetings from Mexico
Great episode, now go do a deep dive on Sir Mix-A-Lot. 😏 He's mostly seen as a one-hit wonder, but he's a pretty unique cat who knew his stuff, and there's some great samples and stories to unearth there.
Thanks for this, I love attempting to learn mixing but by my music choices kids think I'm tone deaf, as a kid I wanted to take up drums like Joey Jordison from Slipknot RIP, but elementary had a percussionist teach a few types and how they operate can't remember names but can use them if if presented. I miss In Living Color wish it never ended, Mad TV was O.K. but after 2 seasons, I stopped!
@diggingthegreats Thanks for linking the video! I guess I've probably heard it a lot and "I know" was just the first song that came to mind. Good work!
Reachin: A New Refutation of Time and Space is one of if not the most cohesive, complete albums of any genre. It is really a great album. Blowout Comb is dope, it’s just sonically terrible.

That’s the 90’s. We will probably never see “pop” charts with the breadth or depth of the 90’s ever again.
Well, Hip Hop Hooray was clearly made for the charts, not just as a lead single for "the streets", so to speak. It's still a dope song, but it's pretty obvious they were going for a repeat of O.P.P. with that one.
Fun fact: 9th Wonder actually got his name from a track (of the same name) by Digable Planets
A video on that whole Blowout Comb album would be so welcomed 🙏🏽
@@CantTellYou that album is a masterpiece!! My other underrated fav from that era is Pete Rock &CL Smooth- Main Ingredient
Ladybug so underrated, perhaps criminally lol
Second that
Her verse on "Dog It" is so fucking slick
Do y'all remember her on The Dino 5 😅 I bought that for my little cousin lol
THAT GRAMMY NOMINEES LIST!!! I'm pretty sure that the 90's were the peak of Western Civilization
was literally just listening to them. glad youre giving them some recognition

@ I have to disagree. But I guess everybody rapping the same is the new variety? Boy what’s really down is up & what’s left is really right.
“We be to rap what key be to lock” thanks E40 for the revival!
AbSoul used that line on his new album, shouts out to that as well
@ thanks to the west coast reviving east coast legends!

Their sophomore release Blowout Comb is a beast of an album.
I was just playin that the other day. Still remember when 9th Wonder (Slicker This Year) track dropped 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Blowout Comb is basically a perfect album… some might match it in this, but it’s so cohesive in sound & concept that really nothing can beat it

I saw 2 shows in the 90's; a club and opening for Sade in Chi Town. Epic!
Proud to say I introduced many of my friends to Blowout Comb in 93!! I had been rocking Reachin' for a minute. Love the channel!
Finally. I’ve been waiting for you to do a video on Digable planets since I found your channel.
Istg u read my mind, I've been a fan of Digable Planets for so long and I always wanted a video from you about them, This is a dream come true
I didn't beg because I knew you would. I had this feeling that you would do a digable planet video. And rebirth of slick too?? You are the best. 🧡
As a person new to home audio equipment, I'm after new music to listen to. This is a great channel to expand your music knowledge, thank you
You teach me so much about the music I played when I was a teenager and to this day as a 45 year old woman.

Shoutout to E-40 for handing this song to the next generation.
Not only is your channel awesome, but your ad reads aren't annoying and I appreciate it.
One of the best songs that year but seems to be forgotten by so many who listened to those radio stations back then. Crazy how few remember it.
Yes, and their follow up album Blowout Comb caught very little traction. IMO it’s the better album.
Ish is an underrated producer. Son is nice with it to this day. That first DP album is a classic simply for its production.
Digging the greats Friday. Matter of fact, let me go listen to this album and song 🔥
Now were talking 🔥

they played recently at my local county fair a couple years ago! such a random appearance but i loved it
I appreciate all your breakdowns but the music in the background is so dope that I had to mention it
Saw a reunion gig some time ago and they still sounded amazing together. Ish in shabazz palaces is also very progressive music.
Things were pretty cool back then. Rebirth of Slick also got heavy air play on Alternative radio.
I didn't even know they received a Grammy for this, I really endorsed the exceptionally funky flava

Just wondering if you can do a review on Steely Dan, in particular, the song ASIA
"Hip-hop HOO-ray" 😂
Ladybug, butterfly, and doodlebug just better. Seen em live last year, better late than never
Shabazz Palaces is next level
You forgot the buzzy synth that's apparent on some of the song.
Is that the same drum break from Nas's "I Can”? Before it was chopped, I mean.

Hey! Big fan, what if you made a website where you make bass guitar riffs and people can sample them having a price is optional.
9th wonder (blackatolism) their best track imo
It’s odd: I love this beat but I feel like if I had been the one to make the original, I would hate it lol
I still quote Oswald Bates from In Living Color to this day.
needs that sub-bass hit on the 15-and of the 16-bar loop.
Great vid!
Am I the only one that calls them Ish, Mecca and Knowledge instead of Butterfly, Ladybug and Doodlebug? Just seems to fit them better
Reachin: A New Refutation of Time and Space is one of if not the most cohesive, complete albums of any genre. It is really a great album.
