I remember when I was 4 I asked God to let me learn to speak in tongues. It has been a part of my life and freed me from very dark and traumatic situations before in fact I was in the middle of being assaulted and I spoke in tongues it scared the perpetrator so much that he had to stop. My friends laugh at me when I do but they just don't understand the blessings that I have received just from being able to do it. Thank you Lord. I love you thank you for the gift of speaking in tongues.

I loved this interview. I too watched watched Pastor Mike’s sermon and although I agree that speaking in tongues is a benefit (1 Corinthians 14:4) he made it seem like everyone can have this gift. If that’s the case, then everyone should be able to prophecy, heal, teach etc. but the word does not say that. 1 Corinthians 12:11 says ““All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.” The Holy Spirit decides who should get what gift. Also 1 Corinthians 12:29 “Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? Now eagerly desire the greater gifts.” I was waiting for these verses to be brought up in the sermon so it can be expanded upon but I feel like they were ignored. I do believe as you start to mature in the spirit the Holy Spirit will give you new gifts if you are able to handle it and if you desire them. I think about Elijah and Elisha for example. Elisha was Elijah’s protege and he desired to have a double portion of Elijah’s anointing and his gift of prophesying, and it was given to him. The holy spirt gave him that gift but he could of chose to reject it but he wanted it. I think as we become more Christlike the spirt will grant more gifts as he sees fit. And if you don’t have love or the fruits of the spirit the gifts means nothing.
I speak in the tongues but my teaching of tongues was distorted from a more legalistic point of view and it took reading the Bible for myself to see that speaking in tongues is not proof that I have the Holy Spirit. My fruit is that proof.

      100% agreed.
Was saved July 2019. Baptized in water August 8/4/19 and really began pressing into the Lord. I had a separate baptism of the Spirit where I was filled with the gifts of tongues in late 2019 after I asked the Lord to take over my life and my tongue.
I do think it’s possible for everyone but it’s like everything in the Lord, we’re all on a journey and it doesn’t make you better or worse to have the gift of tongues. It’s just another “gear” I have I guess and I want everyone in the body to be able to experience it... just like some people can prophesy, which until VERY recently, was a gift to which I didn’t have access, when and if God wills it He can and will give it. Stressing about it though is the worst way to go about submitting to the Spirit.

I actually needed to see/hear this. I'm not a tongue speaker, but I feel when I pray, it comes from deep within and there's definitely a spirit behind it. I do feel tongue speaking is a legit gift and should be treated as such but that's all you see and hear, almost like it's trendy. If I ever get to a sincere point where I do pray in tongues, I hope it's only from the spirit and its proper authority, throiugh prophecy and interpretation. I've been in positions where I was told my praying and how I was praying was "not enough" because I wasn't a tongue speaker and have been spiritually self conscious since. As long as my God knows the place my prayers come from, tongues or not, I need to be at a peace knowing He hears me.

I went to Bible college in a denomination that teaches the initial evidence of being filled with or baptised in the Holy Spirit was speaking in tongues. However in saying that, something did not seem to sit quite right. I asked the question was it the Holy Spirit's intention to give us the understanding from Scripture that tongues is always the initial evidence of Holy Spirit baptism. It did not seem to be the case, definitely was evidence, but not recorded to be so in every instance in the book of Acts. I began to think that maybe many of us of pentecostal persuasion are emphasising tongues in a way that Scripture does not seem to. My conclusion was the same as Dr Brown except he articulated it so well, much better than what I could. There are so many that need to hear this. Thank you to both of you and blessings on you both.

This issue to me has been quite simple for a few years now, and very clearly explained here. Stop treating gifts like they are a cultivated super power, it’s not a PR in a spiritual gym. The Gospel is the power of God unto salvation, not your spiritual back flips lol. Paul said all this extra crap he had before simply KNOWING Christ is just that, dung compared to the worth of KNOWING Christ. This is not to diminish the gifts they are real and for now but don’t use that to puff your chest out Paul also said if you only prophesy and don’t love you are a noisy gong.

I had been praying and praising God for 3 days and I suddenly felt the Holy Spirit on me. It was as if, I couldn't praise him fast enough and the spirit took over. As I was in the Spirit it looked like what seem to be books coming in my mouth. This happened for about 2 mins. I've never been one to believe in tounges, but something happened to me that day. I didn't actually speak in tounges, but the Lord showed me he is with me. Praise the name of the Lord Jesus! Great interview! As a oneness apostolic believer, I whole heartedly believe that tongues is the initial sign of the Holy Ghost according to scripture. Without it, the Jews probably never would’ve believed that salvation was for the gentiles as well. Look how Peter responded.
““As I began to speak,” Peter continued, “the Holy Spirit fell on them, just as he fell on us at the beginning.”
    ‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭11:15‬ ‭NLT‬‬
What happened in the beginning when the Spirit fell on them? They spoke in tongues, and by that sign the Jews knew for sure that salvation was also for the gentiles.

I myself am oneness pentecostal as well, I feel part of the problem a lot of people have excepting the idea of a oneness epistemology is the way its preached. Saldy in a lot of oneness churches it is taught and you are almost condemned of believing what the brothers taught in the video. We may not agree on some things but there is no need to condem someone when we have no right too. The only one who can judge is God, not us. Great response , respect your views !!

Why not desire one of the other gifts? Some Christians sadly make it seem like the gifts of languages is more important then the other gifts. That should be a red flag.

So....I'm glad I came across this. I have become extremely curious with the concept of tongues. I seen something awhile back that was talkin bout the baptism of the spirit & releasing your tongue. Now what hit me so hard is how it was talked about as a more intimate way to communicate with the Father. So, I automatically wanted to try. I asked the spirit in, said I release my tongue to you, & asked for the chance to speak to the Lord in a more intimate & closer way. I guess because I asked....I had a few words I didn't understand start to come to mind but I didn't say them & then it just happened, I said like one small phrase. That was it. But I haven't since.

I absolutely love this and I agree with everything here. Especially about the laity vs. priesthood." That term laity makes me cringe...it gives, in my opinion, believers a pass to sit back and not do their part as a believer. We all have a testimony of the hope that we have in Christ and I believe we all, regardless of ministry gifts, have gifts and we should use them to reach others for Christ.

The Jude quote is two different exhortations.
It doesn't say build yourself up by praying in the Spirit.
One directive is to build ourselves up in our most holy faith.
The second is to pray in the Holy Spirit.
It's also good to consider that each time we're directed to pray in the Spirit the directive is not given to an individual but to a group of believers. In the new testament time believers praying together was normal and regular.

it's interesting, in listening to this conversation, I both believe that we have specific gifts AND that we have all of them - depending on circumstance and when God wants to use them through us in different circumstances.
Example: I have two predominate gifts that the Lord uses regularly in my life. Discerning of spirits, and prophecy / knowledge through dreams.
I have, however, a mentor who has the gift of healing and I've been working with him to better walk in my faith - as we all know, 99% of the American Churches don't walk in the spiritual gifts because you can't quantify it / control it, etc.
About a few months ago, I prayed over a congressional member of my church who suddenly had Bells-palsy. And so I laid hands over him and prayed. And each time I saw him, he got a little bit better, and we would continue praying until he got healed entirely.
    Praise God for that.
Do I have the gift of healing? Not that I’m aware of. But did Jesus use me to heal him through His power? Absolutely.
It’s not part of my “standard” gift set, but I believe that if we are inclined to the Spirit, the Lord can do anything through us.
And that includes speaking in tongues (a gift I don’t possess, but I believe if the circumstance required it, God could allow me to).

Oneness Pentecostal here. Speaking in tongues is not THE sign of Salvation. It is gift from God. It is up to Him if we speak it or not but not required for our Salvation's. Anyone CAN speak in tongues but not everyone does speak in tongues, and it's ok.

People take 1 Cor.14:2 out of its context and try to turn it into another unintelligible gibberish and call it tongues.
1 Cor.14 :2. If a Japanese man walks into your church and stands up to testify and starts speaking in Japanese how God has healed him and wanted to praise God. Now without an interpretation from Japanese to English no man will understand and it is going to be a big mystery and only God knows what was said.
In 1 Cor.14 Apostle is addressing a church that was misusing gifts and Apostle Paul was making a point that spiritual gifts were only for edification of the church.
Do not self-edify in a church service because Paul is making church rules for a church service.!!!

Ruslan, I humbly disagree with you saying that Michael Todd said in his sermon states that you have to speak in tongues to be saved. If you listened to his full sermon he actually says exactly what you are saying, that it is a gift of the spirit or a benefit but not a requirement. His sermon series was called the upgrade but it was about the Holy Spirit and utilizing the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Im not trying to throw stones or argue with you cuz I truly love and appreciate your content, but I guess Im writing this in hopes to help you keep facts straight… perhaps I may have misunderstood how he was expressing his sermon so please let me know. I honestly believe that Michael Todd said was in alignment with Dr. Brown as well. Keep up the great content!! Peace and God bless you bro.

    • @RuslanKD

      1. I NEVER SAID THAT. re listen to what i said. mike todd was clear. it's an "upgrade" and he kept conflating "praying in tongues" with "praying in the spirit" dr. Michael brown just dispelled both points and made it CLEAR. one can be SPIRIT FILLED and NOT pray in tongues. and folks who don't have the gift of tongues can still pray in the spirit.

27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

I’ve been speaking in tongues for 32 years and some of the worst believers I have met are tongue talkers - others without this gift we’re amazing believers in conduct - it’s frustrating to see. The Ephesians 6 passage Mentioned nails it - that ends all speculation - you have to read the whole bible - because apparent contradictions get ironed out - yes you can pray IN the Spirit via tongues and via your own language and get understanding on both ways - each verse may relate to tongues or your own language - context will determine it and you have to rightfully divide it - in Acts 2v38 the gift of the Spirit is talking about empowerment not the gift in regeneration - there is MORE - best book on it - there is more by Randy Clarke.
