I didn't know Ignorance is Bliss was so conflictive for them as band in regards to their relationship with the label and fans. I love Face To Face punk, but Ignorance is Bliss (for me) is where the true power of Face To Face lies. Sincerely one of my all time favorite records and a hidden treasure to most. Ignorance is Bliss is an amazing Rock & Roll record and anyone who stumbles upon it is a very fortunate soul.
God I love this album. And I was a fan from before this album(around Big Choice's release I was first introduced to this amazing band) And I don't understand why everyone was so negative on Ignorance. It's different but in a really good and honest way. I wish I would caught them on this tour.
I left the scene in 98 and returned in 2005 and it was a shock at what happened to old bands and what new bands sounded like, i had to rebuild my library with nothing but 97' on down records and bands and slowly i started finding better bands from 2000's but nothing like the mid 90's until Protection!
Trever should be damn proud of Ignorance Is Bliss. It may not "fit" with the rest of their catalogue, but it's still their best and most mature album. 1999 was a great year. You had Face To Face shocking us all with Ignorance and Jimmy Eat World dropping Clarity.
Ignorance is Bliss is the alternative punk album that helped FtF professionally step aside from all the rest of the early 90s skate punk bands like NOFX, Pennywise, Rancid, Lagwagon, Good Riddance, Bad Religion, Vandals, etc...
I never understood why ignorance is bliss didn't get more credit. I still have my copy and love this album. Yeah it was different but it was great nonetheless.
Most fans of that 90s skate-punk (myself included) weren't opened to the beats slowing down. I didn't fully appreciate it until 4-5 years later. At least got to see Trever and Scott do the album on the acoustic tour in 2012.
I saw them at the troubadour perform the album with a string section (one of the girls was late because of traffic) it sounded great either way. But ya, that performance gave me a different perspective of the album and ever since I have more appreciation for it. Just they're more of a faster pace band and I think that's why at the time it was a flop with the fan base. But I do believe people have come around to it, just as long as they don't focus on the album in a normal live performance
I was a FtF fan from the early days, growing up in SoCal, and while I loved SoCal punk, by the late 90s, I'd started getting into what we then called "emo," like Jimmy Eat World, Mineral, Promise Ring, etc. So when Ignorance Is Bliss came out, I was thrilled FtF was taking some chances with their music. And they completely stuck the landing. There isn't a weak song on the album. I'm only sad it scared them off from being more adventurous down the line because of fans who wanted punk and nothing else.
Sometimes punk rock fans can be Sicily naive and perhaps alil immature. When one get older as a musician you'll tend to venture into a whole other sound. A punk rocker will always be punk in heart so if one makes an acoustic song . take a listen. And Im sure when you mature . you'll understand it and learn to appreciate the artist. Thank you for you time to read this . Oi!
Bliss was so stylistically different from their other offerings that some people were put off by it. Not me though, I think it was amazing balls to the wall songwriting from the first second to the last.
