Hey! Best video of all of the trackpad vids I’ve watched. One of the others mentioned a “miss-clicking” issue. Do you find that to be an issue in editing? By miss-clicking, he showed an example of trying to close out a window, but kept missing the X.
Thanks so much, Maxx! I'm not sure about the mis-clicking issue - I personally don't recall any instance where I couldn't close out a window but kept missing the X. Maybe part of that is because I never use the X to close out a window! Haha. I use Command + W to close windows because I hate trying to click the teeny tiny X!
Today I learnt I’m s chosen one, great video mate. Will definitely help and hey, Magic Mouse ain’t too bad. I use both trackpad for gestures on the left hand and the mouse to point
The Double Dip! Not a bad thing at all to use both. And the trackpad is there to bail out the Magic Mouse 2 if you have to charge it ('cause you can't charge it and use it at the same time 🤦🏻♂️)
Haha - you know it. And thanks for joining the livestream the other day. I know I didn't get to acknowledge everyone who was present OR read all of the comments/questions, but I saw you in chat, Chris, and it's much appreciated!
The trackpad may be awesome, but nothing - NOTHING - beats the combination of Logitech MX Master 3 in one hand and an Elgato Stream Deck on the other! That combination gives you editing superpowers right there! :-)

ha! nice one ... you seem to like KillBill ?! 😉 yeah so I activated this three finger drag thing but it takes a bit getting used to it ...I guess ... also yeah I'm one of those mission control swipe users so 4 fingers for that now ... anyways, thanks for this enjoyable and informative video ... I'm using magic trackpad for a while now but also have a MX Master 3 ... switching between both ...oh and also, Premiere Pro is a fine application, huh?! 😅
Love me some Kill Bill. I got to see the print Quentin screened at Cannes at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles when I used to live there a lifetime ago. It was amazing! Hope three finger drag makes you love the Trackpad a bit more - it really took it to the next level for me. And I got used to 4 finger swipe up for Mission Control pretty quick. A mouse is critical for a lot of power users, and I don't blame anyone for using them. I tried because I wanted to program those extra buttons but the clicking was keeping me out of the creative flow. I wish I could use one!
OKay, thank you for sharing the three finger edit tip. I just tried and it works in Resolve too! This is such a quick way of editing. Thank you for sharing this!
I am used to your excellent tips and tricks and expect that. It's why I watch your channel. I did not expect to laugh as well. You have become the Patrick Warburton of Final Cut Pro. Love it. This is your best production to date.
That is a very good question. Only thing I can think of is I keep making mediocre thumbnails and vid titles and they’re not winning the click…? And I’m possibly not engaging my viewers consistently enough to get higher audience retention numbers 🤷🏻♂️ Just gotta keep working at it! 👨🏻💻
I have come to terms with the having both a mouse on the right hand for precision pointing/clicking and a trackpad for the left for more loose navigation, I kinda have to lift my hand at times from the keyboard but it’s fine to be honest, it becomes second nature… I can’t bare scrolling anymore even webpages with a scroll wheel (yeah, a scroll wheel, I can’t with the Magic Mouse ergonomics). If no mouse is available then I do enable the three point mouse drag. Great video.
Yessssss. You gotta give at least give it a try and really really try to use the gestures to overcome the initial awkwardness. Can't wait for the new 27" iMacs. I'm guess this Spring/Early Summer and then M1 Pro/Max Mac Pro in the late Fall. I can't wait to get one!
Fantastic tip Matthew! I've tried the trackpad before but not with the three-finger-swipe enabled -- makes a BIG difference in usability. Unfortunately the trackpads lack of precision on some poorly designed controls is still an issue.
It can be for certain apps especially. Always good to have a mouse handy. A lot of folks love their WACOM tablets too for precision work. I've never used one.
very cool! All I need to do now is get used to using 4 fingers instead of 3 for moving left or right to another desktop. I don't think it will take more than 5 minutes to get used to that though. Great tip!!!!
Mindblown!🤯! Wow! 🙏 thank you! My magic trackpad 2 has been collecting dust because of this very reason and had reverted to my old usb mouse. Game changer 😀
First time here and loved the video! I'm a long-time Trackpad-loving FCP editor, but I've always used "Enable dragging: with drag lock", saving three-finger drag for fullscreen switch and such. But now you've got me curious to try this minor tweak instead. Thanks, great content and great production!
And I've never used dragging with drag lock - I need to check it out just so I know what it is. I think, overall, three finger dragging requires the fewest steps/actions to do a slightly complicated action of dragging and dropping. It feels like one action with free finger drag instead of 2-3.
@@matthewTobrien "With drag lock" is nearly the same thing. Instead of dragging with three fingers, you can double-tap-and-hold with one finger. I've been using it for a long time and love it compared to the more complicated steps required, as you explained in the beginning of your video. I'm guessing it will come down to a personal preference. I'm currently giving your suggestion a go to see if it feels better. All in all, I totally agree with you-the Magic Trackpad 2 is a wonderful way to edit in FCP and just use your Mac in general.
Ah, I see. That makes sense Yeah, for me three finger drag is basically a single step and off you go. Definitely not everyone's preference, but I appreciate you being open-minded and giving it a try!
I just felt like using my name would create a more personal connection and perhaps make it easier for channel shoppers to commit to subscribing. Originally I hoped the channel was going to showcase a lot more short docs and films so naming it like it was a movie studio was more fitting than my name. But it’s been much more like a traditional filmmaking TH-camr channel and renaming it to my name felt like the right move. 🤷🏻♂️
@@matthewTobrien thanks for the explanation if though you didn’t need to. I was thinking of rebranding a studio/different business name / but might just keep my own name for now.
absolutely awesome thanks a lot. And those edits!! Give me something to strive for in next gazillion of years me producing just one video in two months or so. I hope I be able to get more time to work on my videos.
I’ve been doing three finger drag for a few years…but I’m SO MUCH FASTER with a mouse. I just can’t get into editing with the trackpad. And yes I know the keyboard shortcuts. But skimming and selecting ins and outs are so much faster with pointer control versus JKL transport.
Absolutely, it's not for everyone. Gotta stick with the tools that are best for you and you workflow - glad you get the results you're looking for from your mouse. Do you use a magic mouse or a Logitech MX Master series?

I've had the magic trackpad since the first version for my iMac and it's been awesome. Didn't know about some of these FCP gestures. Thanks!
Enjoy them! Double-tap to zoom out and fit the timeline and three-finger-drag are mainstays for me!
OMG. That drag has been the only reason I can't edit without a mouse on mi Mac. Thanks for this info
That’s what I’m talkin’ about! Let me know how adopting Three-Finger Drag works out!
What an entertaining video, well done!!! 👍🏻
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh wouah wouah, thank you very very much for this three finger trick! I love you !
Hopefully not as much as you’ll love Three Finger Drag!
Today I learnt I’m s chosen one, great video mate. Will definitely help and hey, Magic Mouse ain’t too bad. I use both trackpad for gestures on the left hand and the mouse to point
The Double Dip! Not a bad thing at all to use both. And the trackpad is there to bail out the Magic Mouse 2 if you have to charge it ('cause you can't charge it and use it at the same time 🤦🏻♂️)
Love it! You're hilarious🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Appreciate that! 🙌
Go to 3:20
Good spot to go to. 👍
Nice addition of clownage... entertaining AND educational
Haha - you know it. And thanks for joining the livestream the other day. I know I didn't get to acknowledge everyone who was present OR read all of the comments/questions, but I saw you in chat, Chris, and it's much appreciated!
Awesome & Thanks :)
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
So.. Freakin'... GOOD.
Thank you, friend! You guys continue to inspire me!
I love the jokes. Keep 'em! And thanks for this video. I am always on the hunt for good FCPX tips.
So glad you enjoyed it, Antonija! Plenty of FCP tips here!
The trackpad may be awesome, but nothing - NOTHING - beats the combination of Logitech MX Master 3 in one hand and an Elgato Stream Deck on the other! That combination gives you editing superpowers right there! :-)
But the clicking, James! The clicking!!! You're lucky it doesn't bother you. 🍀🌈🦄 So glad you're enjoying your Stream Deck!
Dude..keep it up. You personality and delivery skills are the best. Perfect blend….so funny. Have been learning a lot from you lately. Thanks dude, much appreciated. Subscribed.
Awesome! Welcome to the channel! So glad my style is connecting with you - certainly have been trying to bring it now that I'm clear on my goals with TH-cam and my business for 2022. Plus being goofy just makes content creation more fun! Keep learning and I'll keep teaching (and learning, too)! 🤘🏻🙌🏻
ha! nice one ... you seem to like KillBill ?!
I believe the plural of mouse is meese.
Haha, yes!
OKay, thank you for sharing the three finger edit tip. I just tried and it works in Resolve too! This is such a quick way of editing. Thank you for sharing this!
Awesome! Happy editing!
😂 loved the video! You are funny indeed!
Thanks, Sanja!
Fantastic!
Thanks, Austin!
so dramatic! at first I thought "too many jokes", and then I laughed out loud, good one, thumbs up!
Haha - yeah, I gotta make sure I keep it balanced. Glad it all worked out in the end!
I am used to your excellent tips and tricks and expect that. It's why I watch your channel. I did not expect to laugh as well. You have become the Patrick Warburton of Final Cut Pro. Love it. This is your best production to date.
Good call! And I was just watching Seinfeld on my lunch break and Putty was hilarious as usual in it!
Woahhh how do you only have 18k subs? I was expecting at least 200k - loved the video, currently have 'three finger drag' stuck on loop in my head
A lot of editors/creators go this route, and I think it's great. Why limit yourself to just one input device?
Back when I discovered three finger drag, it changed my life.
You and me both. Gotta share it with as many people as possible! 🙌🏻🤘🏻
I think you'd be pleased to know that the latest models of the MX Masters have silent switches.
Woaah ! Thanks !
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
I feel chosen 😅
You are chosen. You are. 🌅
Love it, so fun. nothing wrong with a little shade at Premiere Pro. Just waiting for 27 or bigger M1 iMac's and maybe I'll bundle a trackpad with it.
Yessssss. You gotta give at least give it a try and really really try to use the gestures to overcome the initial awkwardness. Can't wait for the new 27" iMacs. I'm guess this Spring/Early Summer and then M1 Pro/Max Mac Pro in the late Fall. I can't wait to get one!
Your the goat of final cut
Haha love it! Thank you! go🐐🎞
Fantastic tip Matthew!
Yup, it doesn’t take long at all! Welcome to the magical world of Three Finger Drag! 🪄🧙🏻♂️
Thank you so much!!!!
haha awsome video! funny is good😁 way to go👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks, Alexis!
Mindblown!🤯! Wow! 🙏 thank you! My magic trackpad 2 has been collecting dust because of this very reason and had reverted to my old usb mouse. Game changer 😀
That's awesome! Enjoy it and thanks for watching!
Yes Matthew! You were talking to me😬 Another great video! 👍
Haha - I tried to sugar coat it! 🍭
@@matthewTobrien 😬
I’m sure someone else mentioned it in the comments already, but the MX Master3S has no click sound.
Nope, I haven’t heard that. I might need to snag one to make a video on it to follow this one up!
You earned a new Sub for this hilarious vid Bro! Nicely done!!!
Haha - glad you liked it! Welcome to the channel!
Just noticed you changed from Midland Pictures to your name - what made you make that decision?
I just felt like using my name would create a more personal connection and perhaps make it easier for channel shoppers to commit to subscribing. Originally I hoped the channel was going to showcase a lot more short docs and films so naming it like it was a movie studio was more fitting than my name. But it’s been much more like a traditional filmmaking TH-camr channel and renaming it to my name felt like the right move. 🤷🏻♂️
@@matthewTobrien thanks for the explanation if though you didn’t need to. I was thinking of rebranding a studio/different business name / but might just keep my own name for now.
I tend to just go with my gut and my gut was telling me for a while I needed to change it to my name. We'll see if my gut was right!
life changer
Gotta love it!
im so used to my macbook pro BIG track pad that i dont even know why would i ever choose a mouse anymore, FCPX works smooth with the trackpad
I'm jealous of the 16" MacBook Pro trackpad. That thing is huge!
thank you so much sir , almost baught a magic mouse before watching this
The Magic Trackpad is the great!
Just found you dude!
This video was phenomenal
Thanks man seriously
Really love the comedy in this as well 🙏
Glad you found me! So glad you enjoyed the vid - welcome to the channel!
@@matthewTobrien I'm super thrilled to be a part of your journey 🔥
Keep it up my man
That means a lot, man. I am still consistently shocked by the support and encouragement in this channel's community. You guys are the best. 🤘🏻🙌🏻
absolutely awesome thanks a lot. And those edits!! Give me something to strive for in next gazillion of years me producing just one video in two months or so. I hope I be able to get more time to work on my videos.
So appreciate that! Glad you connected with this vid and certainly hope you're able to focus more on your own vids soon.
@@matthewTobrien Magic Mouse. I just have a whole bunch of them around. I have an office mouse, a home mouse, and a travel mouse. And I want them all the same. The Magic Mouse packs nice and slim for travel.
Copy that - I've got a few lying around the house as well...
Amazing video you made me laugh a lot! 🤣And the info was really useful!
So glad! Appreciate you watching and commenting, Lucio!
