    I'm all about using templates for both Finder and FCPX. I've been using Post Haste for a while, and have an FCPX Library Template with all my keyword collections. Only difference for me is that I store all my media inside my Library so I can more easily transport it from drive to drive and also send to remote editors. I found storing media files externally too tedious when it comes to reconnecting them. Of course, not a problem if you only edit and use a FCPX project once and then just archive it.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is an excellent point. I've always shared with editors with media stored outside the library, and I know it's a big extra step to have to relink media. I think your way of doing it is 100% legit - especially since you know your stuff top to bottom. LOVE Poste Haste. Great app.

  • @AdamMannProductions
    @AdamMannProductions 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yea I created an AppleScript app which creates all this for me
    It creates the folders (with current date for searching as copying and pasting will keep the original date).
    It will ask me some simple questions like Date of event, job name and where to save it, it will then create the folders and copy over some Templates from a preset folder and give it a naming structure.
    This allows me to just get it all running within seconds so I can just start copying the media to the folders and then I can import and this helps with organizing in FCP and such.
    It is custom to my ways of working but it is not to complex to adjust.
    I have one I use for Weddings, one for my Blogs as they have different folder structures but the principle is the same

    How does your smart collection workflow work for the editing projects? For example I name my videos and at the end put Ver 1 then when I duplicate the timeline it turns into Ver 2 automatically. But how can I have a smart collection that has all my current timelines for the project instead of manually organizing it? For example some videos may be on Ver 1 while other videos are on Ver 3. But I only want to see the most current versions of all the projects in one place and older versions I want to be somewhere else as a safety backup. It Snapshotting the project better? Just curious your work flow on this?

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I hope to make a video that's more in-depth about this. With Smart Collections you can filter using A LOT of different criteria so I may take your question and either in a vid or in a livestream see if I can make a Smart Collection that does exactly what you're talking about. I'm not quite sure how to do that other than filtering based on when the Project was created - making the Smart Collection only show the latest version. Going to have to think on that.

      I believe on this video I'm using FilmConvert Nitrate for the grade. I started using it this year when we partnered up for sponsorship on my channel. I use their Kodak 5207 Vis3 emulation. The shots where I'm in my studio where all the gear is located got away from me a little bit - a bit too stylized for my liking. A lot of blue/teal but not quite enough orange. I like to keep my TH-cam videos a bit more natural looking and not quite as stylized, but that's how it goes. Thanks for watching!

      Create a Final Cut Library, create all the Events, Folders, Keyword Collections Smart Collections and Projects you use for every video (especially if it's TH-cam vids) and then keep that FCP Library file in, say, your Movies folder. Every time you start a new video, copy that Final Cut Library into the folder where you keep all of your media for that specific video. When you open that copied Library template, rename it in Finder or Final Cut Pro and you're up and running with Events, Keyword Collections, etc. already made.

    Thanks for those tips. I’d like to work more like that. One barrier since I got the Sony A7S3 is not being able to preview the clips in the finder therefore not being able to organise them easily from there. so I tend to import into FCPX then organise which isn’t as efficient. Any workarounds for viewing in the finder you can suggest? Thanks Warren

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! That is a downside to the Sony file structure. It's a bit of a pain to zero in on the video file and with some of their formats you can't view them in Finder at all, from what I understand. I remember when I had the a6500 I would import with Final Cut Pro and then go to the Library file in Finder, right-click and choose "Show Package Contents" and then I'd tunnel into the Event where the footage was stored and move the footage back into my Finder Folder structure. Kind of crazy, I know, but I can't stand not having easy access to my footage in Finder. Especially when I need to pull footage from that project for a different project, etc. It's too painful trying to grab it from within FCP. Anyway, I digress... Thanks for watching, Warren!

      @@matthewTobrien thanks so much for your detailed reply. Much appreciated. Yes I tried looking in the package contents and the only clips able to be viewed in the finder are the ones that have been rendered. I wondered about using Catalyst browse but would need the paid version to be able to use it for organising folders etc. It would probably still be possible to use your system of folders by importing them into a library with them empty then putting the clips into the right place after?

      I think so, but without seeing all the steps of your exact workflow, I'm cautious about saying that that 100% would work. But I'll think on it a bit more... No worries, Abigail! So I keep a Final Cut Pro Library file in my Finder folder template under "2 PROJECTS < FCPX". • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. I often click on the Event to see what all is in a given Event. If that Event are to contain Folders that separated things like Graphics, Screen Recordings, etc. I would see all of those items when I click on the Event. Sure I could click on the folder instead, but I often find that my mind gravitates toward clicking at the Event level. With everything in separate Events, when I click on an Event I know that I'll only be seeing Graphics or Stills or Screen Recordings. You could certainly do just one Event and then have Folders within that Event.

    Just a little note on using FCP Templates: FCP Libraries contain a unique Identifier, if you duplicate a library in the Finder, this Identifier will not change. This causes FCP to overwrite your Cache files if they are stored in the same location. Example: Create 2 duplicates of your template, open Library „1“, it will create a Cache file called „1“ in your Cache folder/location. Then close Library „1“ and open Library „2“. The previous Cache file „1“ will suddenly be named „2“. Unfortunately this causes huge performance issues on larger libraries as everything inside the cache will be rewritten. Just something to be aware of.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is very, very good to know, Sam. Interesting. Hasn't been an issue in my TH-cam workflow or in any of my client projects that I'm aware of - but I'll certainly pay closer attention to that moving forward to see if I notice anything problematic. Thanks for the heads up!

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And just to clarify - this is if you store your cache/render files OUTSIDE the FCP Library? I store mine IN my FCP Library so does my workflow exempt me from this issue?

    • @sampl_e
      @sampl_e 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@matthewTobrien I guess so, but I haven’t tested it as we always keep the Cache external. You could „Show package contents“ of the library and check if the Cache still gets renamed within a library.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll give it a look! I have a feeling it won't impact it since the render files are stored in each individual library.

  • @lntg

    Hey just a random question. I've shot a couple of weddings recently and because I don't want to miss an important shot I don't switch between 25fps and 50fps that often unless I have a solid couple minutes of time. And so I've got to editing and realised I might want a particular shot to be half speed or even quarter speed even though I shot it in 25fps.
    Obviously Optical Flow is the way to go, and it generally looks fantastic. But it fills up my analysis files SOOOOO fast it's not even funny. Right now I've got a 3 minute 10 second video, with maybe 40-50 seconds worth of footage that I've used optical flow on. And I shit you not, there is over 1TB worth of optical flow files. Like what in the hell is that!??? I've got create optimised media turned off and stuff. But optical flow just chews up my SSD space.
    Have you ever had this problem before? Is there a fix or is it just how it is?

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I personally haven't had that issue because I haven't done too much retiming of clips like that. 1TB definitely seems high to me, though. Like, really, really high. I use an app by a company called Arctic Whiteness called Final Cut Pro Library Manager and it's great because it gives you a breakdown of what is taking up all the space in your FCP Library and you can choose to just delete Optical Flow files vs. your render files or optimized media, etc. A lot more control than what FCP gives. Might want to take a look at that? Not that it'll solve an issue if FCP is going haywire with the optical flow files unfortunately.

  • @RichAesthetic

    Why do you have a smart collection under screen recordings instead of a keyword collection? Considering you have the folder for screen recordings, that finder folder would be taken as the keyword and dump scrnrec into that keyword already, no?

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent question, Rich. Glad you asked. The reason I do a Smart Collection is primarily because while editing most of my videos I'm doing multiple screen recordings while I'm editing them. I custom name my screen recording files so as I add screen recordings to my SCREEN RECORDINGS folder and then import them into Final Cut Pro, it's much easier to just quickly drag the new ones to my SCREEN RECORDINGS Event and have them automatically go into the SCREEN RECORDINGS Smart Collection.
      If I had all of the screen recordings I needed at the beginning of my edit and wasn't going to be adding new ones while I edited, then I'd most likely use the method you described. For me, one of the things I love about Smart Collections is how easy it makes it to add new media assets you've created while editing and then you need only drag the new media to the Event rather than clicking on the event and then navigating to the Keyword Collection that matches that new media in order to keep that new media in that Keyword Collection upon import.

    • @RichAesthetic
      @RichAesthetic ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matthewTobrien I see, makes sense with the types of tutorials you make that you'd continue accumulating screen recordings.
      If you read this, could you maybe make a followup video to this one that explains how the finder folder timplate "connects/works with" your FCP template? cuz I've made my own now, which is much simpler than your templates as I'm a hobbyist filmmaker, not actually having clients and big projects. but I'm having difficulty figuring out the correct way to import into FCP and having my media fall into the correct keywords.
      Or does your template that you sell come with an explainer of how finder and fcp are "connected" or how they are supposed to work together?
