I snagged a pair of green razorbacks for 90 bucks on an Amazon Black Friday special. They say they use a different insole now but ill be the judge of thst. I’ve got a pair of super squishy rock rooster insoles if I need them
Based on your review & Carl Murawski review, 8 months ago (Feb 2022) I decided on a pair of JG Razorbacks. I'm a mailman in rural Maryland. These boots are more than adequate and have far exceeded my expectations. Worn almost daily & very minimal wear on sole. Looking forward to many years of my Razorbacks on the job
South African, my last pair lasted me 15 years farm work, hunting and safari work. Only reason I replaced them is they looked a little ragged, still functional. You made a great choice.
I bought them recently and the insole is different now, has more substantial, anatomically shaped rubber insert instead of the small poron patch at the heel. Feel pretty comfortable. Great boots!
Finally snagged a pair. Mine came with an odd looking insole with parts plastic and leather. So far it's been okay, but it's not substantial leather like in redwing and heritage style boots. Might buy a leather or arch support insole. The boots are incredible. Great unique style, wide toe box, quality all around. Breaking then in fire hiking/light work. Similar leather hiking boots are usually insanely pricey. I'd have to work almost 2 days to afford danners heritage leather hiking "mountain light"s.
@@KT-Buf69 got a pair of razorbacks last month and I can say they’re definitely not like the pair Dan disassembled. For one the inner lining leather is gone and the inside is straight rough out leather. The next change is the elimination of the top fiberboard and they’re just relying on the insole to press lock into the leather fiber midsole ( which works as it’s pretty locked in. Lastly they’re more like the insole on the African ranger now with the Texon style second fiberboard unit removed
@@KT-Buf69there's actually a newer insole than that now, the 3 pairs I own all came with different insoles, I have a pair of stockman's which came with the old style with the foam patch, my African rangers came with the ones with the plastic heel cup, and my tyre sole limited run razorbacks came with a much nicer leather topped foam insole with some built in arch support. I've replaced all of them with spencos though because they're the most comfortable thing I've found by far, they're what Nick's boots recommend.
@@zachmiller9175 kept the leathers in so far. I'm have to check out spencos. I don't know what this consist of but I'm a huge fan of rockrooster insoles. Synthetic memory foam material but I've had ones last 2 years, walking at least ten miles a day.
I glad to see something different than than American or Asian made boots. We hardly ever see anything from Africa and South Africa in particularly. Good review and presentation.

These go for $180-$190 on Amazon now, but just ordered a pair for $144 on a Prime Day deal. Can’t wait to get them. My old Timberlands just started separating after several years of weekend yard work and casual wear. I have a feeling these Jim Green’s will be with me for the rest of my life.
Nice teardown! I got a pair of these a few months back and am happy the the quality and fit. Was worn out by shoes and boots in this price range having failed soles or seams to go with discomfort on my bunion. The roomy seamless toe is great. My heel counter was lined with a slightly rougher roughout than your example, so my lackadaisical break-in earned me a small blister.
Love these teardowns! Given all the different lasts used across all the manufacturers, do you think you could start a chart or list comparisons for your sizing? Like, if you wear a 10D in Red Wings, but a 9.5EE in Jim Greens, that'd help us find the right sizing (even if we've got bigger/smaller feet)! Here's to a speedy recovery!
Because of your other video about Jim greens, I ordered these and the other ones. I am replying to this video because this one came yesterday and I love them. What is nice is they are comfortable right out of the box and no break-in. They are also the perfect width for my feet.
I watched your video and purchased a pair of these boots. Surprisingly, they are very comfortable. It only took 2 days to get here, plus I used your coupon code to save (around $18.) These look better in person than on your video, so I must add that I'm very pleased with this purchase (even thought I received them this morning.) I will say they are much heaver that my other boots, but that will take some getting use to. I'll keep you posted.
My son has been wearing Doc Marten Chelsea boots for about five years as his daily school shoe. By the end of the year they are just so thrashed. Last year a chunk of the sole just broke off his boots. It was crazy. It looks like Jim Green makes a pull on Chelsea that is similar in the same price range. Gonna give it a shot and see if we can get a pair that last at least until he outgrows them...
Bought these based on you're review and one from Carl Murawski. Not disappointed really great boot overall. I am just starting to get them broken in a bit and a little more flexible. I have a very wide foot these boots are the only ones I have used that were not custom that fit my foot. The only complaint is I wish it had a cork based foot bed or something a bit more moldable but guess I can always add that on my own. Thanks for the review I also highly recommend them great boots.
Hi Weston. Great video and thanks for the discount code. I bought a pair of the Jim Green Razorback's in tan. I have had my eye on a pair of the Danner Mountain Trail and I was surprised with the similarities in look and build to the Razorback. In the UK the Danners are going for around the £300 mark so the Jim Green's where nice at 3rd the price!

The town was in my back yard when I lived inSouth Africa, my one pair I still wear off roading is 23 years old and imported a second new pair to me in New Zealand last year . Absolutely love them , tough long lasting and so comfortable..
Price wise, these compare to the Danner Mt600 series, latest being EVO. He did cut the Mt Light but the newer ones which are not as good as the old classic. He was not impressed. Waterproofing is the big difference I see with Danner. So many of these other brands don't do the GorTec liner.
My Razorbacks are going on six years now. Five years on a farm with a few gashes on the uppers, and moderate wear on the soles. Six months in town walking dogs on the tar road everyday and I see significantly more wear on the soles. I'm going to have to have them resoled soon. Probably still the best boots you can buy.
Hey Weston, nice find. It's nice to see affordable boots coming from other places besides China. And as you mentioned, there are some financial implications that add to the value. The only thing I didn't like, was all the single stitching throughout the upper. But the bottom line is you can't go wrong in buying these. I also like the style, they remind me of old hiking boots from the 70's & 80's with that single piece of leather wrapping around the upper.
@@MWENDA-vv5im soles last about 10 years. I weigh 115kg and wear them every day. My first pair bought in 1998 are still fine on the uppers, the soles were replaced in 2009.
@@MWENDA-vv5im the reason in my opinion the soles are so long wearing is the carramato safety sole clone compound that was perfected for the harsh African conditions. There was a very similar tread pattern that was used on our combat boots during the Angolan bush war. I do not know if Jim Green supplied these soles to the military, but if they did they would have had years of product testing. I found the soles excelled in sandy desert scenarios.
AE's are kind of an overprized first tier of nicer dress shoes. Meermin already offers a better value and style in very low prices. However, some proper shoes would be a nice cut (Lobb or Edward Greens, for example - or Saint Crispins).
I did the same and breaking them in right now. I’m realizing that my right foot is slightly bigger than my left. Because the right boot is feeling a little more snug. However, they feel as though they’ll break in just fine.
@5:15 the eye lets are I believe called simply "D-ring eye lets". pretty sure shoemakers have a more elaborate name for those but we call them just D-rings. Love the content, get well soon 👍
Awesome review, subscribed, ordered a pair in tan with your discount! For future content I would love to see a pair of Georgia Giant work boots CUT IN HALF!!!
No offense intended at all, but there is no real surprise here. People in Southern Africa are generally very very skilled at finding the perfect balance between quality and price...and knowing where to put that quality to get maximum use. Farm culture! In 2001 I bought $5 suede chukkas (YES, $5) in Zim that lasted me about a decade. About three years ago, I was in Joburg and paid $15 for a similar pair and the sole has hardly worn at all and the stitching is still in great shape in spite of daily wear in the summer. "Made in RSA" when it comes to shoes and shorts and shirts is generally a strong buy signal. LOL!
Great tear down, the boots definitely look like they're worth the price. On the hard soles...if you are going to be on uneven terrain you need a hard soled boot. A soft sole boot walking over rocks, stones, small changes in terrain, logs, etc. can actually bruise your feet over the course of a day (or at least make the soles of your feet sore). This is one reason a lot of trekking and serious hiking boots have hard/stiff soles. Not great for pavement and not needed for indoor use but definitely worth it for work and play in the dirt.
Wishing you well. I absolutely love deep dives into the quality of products and I love boots so you're one of my favorite channels. Hoping it doesn't take a turn for the worse.
Damm this pair of boots looks awesome. High value for the price, High Quality, Nice construction, this secure and protective tongue design, TPU counter wit a double leather cover, quick to use lacing system, 2.2 mm thick full grain chrome tanned leather, one piece upper, strong and durable outsole, the well built midsole, even the holy steel shank is there and they are resoleable. (The only part that bothers me is the plastic coated cheap lining leather part) For city wear i might add a cushioning insole since you said the outsole is hard, but I probably wouldn't want them to make a softer outsole cuz it could make them less durable. I might also change the laces because of the color. Seems like an awesome everyday allrounder boot which will last a long time, that you can also take out of the city without a problem. Sounds really good to me in my opinion. I definitely need to look if I'm able to get them here in Germany, hopefully they have my size since my feet are rather long but rarrow.
Glad I bought mine from Amazon after watching this video months ago for $139.00 . Thanks for the “recommendation “. A coat or two of shoe grease “Hubert’s” and break- in made me a believer. Great value boot!
As a South African, I'm very proud that Jim Green has finally gone to more international countries. They are well-known here in South Africa and are worn by many farmers, game rangers and people who work a lot in the bush. My first pair were a pair of Razorbacks as a 15th birthday present and I cherished them dearly. They were quite tough to break in, but once they were broken in they were great. Keep in mind that the Razorback is a very sturdy boot, so give them a bit more time to break in than your usual boot.
@@JD-tl7ld He likes to keep open the option to stick a fork in a socket and end it all at a moments notice. Less joking, my wild guess would be he needs to be sure he's not building up a static charge or something.
I got mine on Amazon about 6 months ago. Bought the Vellies and the slip on Stockman. I am sold on the brand. These are crafted boots by the hands of skilled humans. I wish you could go from brand to brand trashing the whole brand, testing and discussing the difference between each brand separately 👍 I personally wear Keens, Timberlands, Truman’s, Redwings boots to work and I really want like to have an idea on how Keen work boots made
I will say I had a pair of keen work boots and they failed terribly. Both soles split completely after just 6 months. I dont work my boots very hard either
@@zingbat4 Keens boots are glued for sure, but if you need something oil resistant for oil industry and waterproof there is nothing on the market that would qualify as much as Keens boots would, and also standards of the product is suffering tremendously I agree with that statement. ⬆️

These remind me so much of those boots for a third of the price. I will compare the feel on my foot, but I’m stoked for such a good deal. Thanks!
I’m so glad I got a pair of these last year. I was actually going to buy another pair in the new fudge color, but saw the price went up by about 50 bucks. They’re still quality but they were an absolute gem at the old price. At the new 190 price they’re approaching Thorogood or Red Wing factory seconds territory.
@@crypto4423 I agree. I will say that the build quality is good and they are a nice boot. As this and others have mentioned - they will do best in the outdoors. As a hiking/adventuring/off-roading boot they are nice. I wouldn’t want to wear them standing in a machine shop all day.
Been working mine for a couple weeks and they're going strong. You'll absolutely want to replace the insole when you get a pair - the one that comes in it is next to useless. Throw a doctor scholls in there and you're ready to go
Those look very good at that price for an all-around boot. I wish they made one that was just a hair more expensive but with slightly nicer materials like a better liner leather and maybe a leather footbed instead of fiberboard.
Ordered a pair today! After watching your video, and checking out the web site I decided to go for the tobacco Vellies. Good price to begin with, 10% discount, free shipping, free exchanges...sheesh! That's an offer I couldn't refuse!
Great vid, I got a pair of the Razorbacks back in May when Jim Green first got distro within the states. They're great boots, they've been my go-to pair for hiking and outdoor work. So far they've held up fantastic, and I've been beating the hell out of them too. Great company, and good people too- if you're in the market for some work boots or hikers I honestly don't think you'll find a better deal.
Does a thicker insole fit? like will a thicker insole ruin the roominess of the toe box? or I can just order a half size bigger and just use a thicker insole?
@@thesheepthemightythecrazy They're pretty accommodating, even with a thick insole- I use some chunky arch support inserts in mine. No need to size up.
I got the brown ones after watching this review earlier this year. They're durable in many ways (construction and sole), but that finish needs a lot of care, from my experience with them. the top layer always scratches off, and the boots become two-tone because of the lighter color under the surface. When I first saw this happening I used to bring them home from the warehouse to maintain them, but then by the next week they would be looking dry and ugly again, so after a bit I gave up on babying them. Other than the finish looking terrible, the construction has held up and the soles have held up really well too. I don't think they're a good workboot for working in a warehouse though. The soles are too hard, as pointed out in this video, and then when you bump into pallets the surface get heavily damaged and flaky. I still need to find something that will last and not look so beat up. Edit: The price has gone up go $189 now, so the trade-offs will be weighed differently given his price increase.
I have had a pair of these boots for nearly 2 years. I bought them Amazon for around $90! I have a bone spur on my heel (never stopped my joining up!) so the took about 3 weeks wearing alternate days to break in. Plus corn plasters. They are superbly comfortable and I do wear both for hiking and on concrete all day. But I did put a quality insole in. I also have a pair of Redwings and they are not a patch on this Jim Greens. Soles show minimal wear. Great boots!!!
Just ordered a pair using your code, I think the wide toe box is my biggest selling point, I had some Redbacks but they were not wide enough, even though they tout they are wide. hoping the Jim Green work out better.
I bought the half size in the Red backs as they are a better toe box width. I did also with the Jim Greens but probably wasn't necessary from what i'm seeing & hearing here. I DID buy an extra generic orthopaedic gel insert because the Red backs come with them as standard.
Just ordered a pair of Green's in brown, was hoping for the tan but out of stock. Looking to replace an old-school pair 0f 90's Eddie Bauer hiking boots but their new version just isn't right. Edit: The break in is killing me ~15miles in. Ordered my normal size 10, ended up returning for 9.5
Thanks for a great look inside the boots-- always enjoy your videos. I have really enjoyed my Razorbacks and find myself slipping them on just about anytime I head outside for chores or a hike. Almost no break-in, good looks, and hard to beat after I dropped some aftermarket inserts in them. I think upgrading the insole is a great way to improve the comfort, especially on hard surfaces. Really glad to have these in the States now.
Thanks for the review Wes! I took advantage of the 10% discount from your video as I just purchased a pair. Keep up the good work. I hope you fully recover soon.

The only thing I didn't like, was all the single stitching throughout the upper. But the bottom line is you can't go wrong in buying these. I also like the style, they remind me of old hiking boots from the 70's & 80's with that single piece of leather wrapping around the upper.
Yeah, I would rather support financially any other country than China or Russia
Boot lover from South Africa. Blessings to you and your channel.
Ordered a pair after watching this. Thanks for the code!
I'm from South Africa and have owned a couple of Jim Green boots, anyway love your videos.
How long do the soles last before you do a resoling? How long do the uppers last before they became to worn out to wear?
@@MWENDA-vv5im soles last about 10 years. I weigh 115kg and wear them every day.
My first pair bought in 1998 are still fine on the uppers, the soles were replaced in 2009.
@@andreduplessis508 Wow. That's a very good boot.
Any thoughts on the Razorback vs the Monster?
Hey man! Any reason you haven't done any videos on Allen Edmond boots/shoes? Would love to see them cut in half!!
I love Allen Edmonds!
I’d love to see that video!
I’d love to see Allen Edmonds prices slashed in half
@@martinjaramillo2429 LOL yea me too!
AE's are kind of an overprized first tier of nicer dress shoes. Meermin already offers a better value and style in very low prices. However, some proper shoes would be a nice cut (Lobb or Edward Greens, for example - or Saint Crispins).
Bought these boots after watching this vid, these are great. Thanks for the truth, keep up the good work
I did the same and breaking them in right now.
Jim Greens handle the rough South African terrain very well. Lots of us wear them 3-4 times a week and they last for decades with minimal maintenance
I've been thinking about buying some Jim Green Stockman boots. The promo code was all I needed to make my decision! Thank you!
Jim Green have the AR8 shipping in October, I'd love to see a video on those.
Love watching these videos before bed. Idk why but super relaxing 😌 😴
LOL!
I got these over 9 months ago for work and they’ve held up really well.
It would be awesome to see some military boots, something like bates lites, danner reckonings, or Belleville.
(The only part that bothers me is the plastic coated cheap lining leather part)
For city wear i might add a cushioning insole since you said the outsole is hard, but I probably wouldn't want them to make a softer outsole cuz it could make them less durable.
Picked up a pair for $90 on Amazon for Black Friday!
Nice. Probably the best deal ever. JG boots are very well made.
Glad I bought mine from Amazon after watching this video months ago for $139.00 . Thanks for the “recommendation “. A coat or two of shoe grease “Hubert’s” and break- in made me a believer. Great value boot!
How is the finish holding up after treating with Hubert's?
As a South African, I'm very proud that Jim Green has finally gone to more international countries. They are well-known here in South Africa and are worn by many farmers, game rangers and people who work a lot in the bush. My first pair were a pair of Razorbacks as a 15th birthday present and I cherished them dearly. They were quite tough to break in, but once they were broken in they were great. Keep in mind that the Razorback is a very sturdy boot, so give them a bit more time to break in than your usual boot.
Fellow South African here - sadly the price has blown up recently
@@caidelander2561 Boot prices here have blown up here in the states too... Jim Green is still the best bang for buck.
just bought a pair! thanks for the insight my man
This stuff is awesome. Can you do a series on hiking/backpacking boots, and start with my fav 'Alico' from Italy?
I own a pair of stockmans. I’ve had them for about 6 years. They are very comfortable and they seem to last forever.
Jim Green also makes custom boots. I wear Jim Green boots with a special conductive sole everyday.
Are you a superhero that needs to conduct electricity?
@@JD-tl7ld He likes to keep open the option to stick a fork in a socket and end it all at a moments notice. Less joking, my wild guess would be he needs to be sure he's not building up a static charge or something.
I got mine on Amazon about 6 months ago. Bought the Vellies and the slip on Stockman. I am sold on the brand. These are crafted boots by the hands of skilled humans. I think the leather and rubber quality is very high. Glad they invested in us and are shipping out of VA. Buy a couple pair of your favorite style you will not be sorry. I am a customer for life. Wear my Stockman for a work boots.
I wish you could go from brand to brand trashing the whole brand, testing and discussing the difference between each brand separately 👍
I personally wear Keens, Timberlands, Truman’s, Redwings boots to work and I really want like to have an idea on how Keen work boots made
I will say I had a pair of keen work boots and they failed terribly. Both soles split completely after just 6 months. I dont work my boots very hard either
keens hold up for me but I'm pretty sure they are just glued together.
@@zingbat4 Keens boots are glued for sure, but if you need something oil resistant for oil industry and waterproof there is nothing on the market that would qualify as much as Keens boots would, and also standards of the product is suffering tremendously I agree with that statement. ⬆️
My Keen hiking boots and other keen shoes have worn like iron.
Never tried the work boots though
First off I hope you’re alright health wise. Wishes for a speedy recovery with no lasting side effects.
I ordered a pair. I have a Danner Portland Select Horween Leather.
I was very interested at the $140 price said in this video but when I went to buy at $190 they are totally unattractive
Do you think the Monster does this?
Got a pr for Christmas, have been wearing them for a week now. Great comfort right out of the box, very well made and look like they will hold up well.
Ordered a pair today! After watching your video, and checking out the web site I decided to go for the tobacco Vellies. Good price to begin with, 10% discount, free shipping, free exchanges...sheesh! That's an offer I couldn't refuse!
Ive been really hard on jim as a brand and the person. This is a new year jim, and im ready to love both of you
Great vid, I got a pair of the Razorbacks back in May when Jim Green first got distro within the states.
@@harkerleatherworks thank you for the info.
Do you find they are heavy for long distance hiking? Weight is the only thing that makes me hesitant to get these boots.
You convinced me and I just ordered a pair from Amazon in the tan!
I'm not sure the price has risen more than everything else has also risen... but, certainly less of a bargain.
What about Alico boots or Scarpa or Asolo or La Sportiva?
Ordered my normal size 10, ended up returning for 9.5
Ya break in was harder than I thought for me too. Replaced the insole 😅
i have never heard of this brand before, but they look awesome and thanks to your video, i think i'll pick up a pair!
This could be your best video title and thumbnail yet lmao
16:05 please Grinders Boots. and i am waiting for my jim green for australia. thank you
Can you do a review on the Allen Edmonds Higgins boots, would love to see how there built... Thx
Jim Green Rizor Backs are not $189.00, a $50 increase in 2yr. ??? are they still a good deal?
Thanks for a great look inside the boots-- always enjoy your videos. I have really enjoyed my Razorbacks and find myself slipping them on just about anytime I head outside for chores or a hike. Almost no break-in, good looks, and hard to beat after I dropped some aftermarket inserts in them. I think upgrading the insole is a great way to improve the comfort, especially on hard surfaces. Really glad to have these in the States now.
Thanks for the review Wes! I took advantage of the 10% discount from your video as I just purchased a pair. Keep up the good work. I hope you fully recover soon.
Now it's literally a $200 boot!
Praying for ya hope you get well soon love those boots
As a South African living in the USA with hobbit feet I’m so glad I found these feet! Never been in a more comfy boot! Thanks for the discount code!
Thank you RoseAnvile. Thanks to your discount code I was able to afford a pair of Jim Green's water monster boot this week.🙏
I'd love to see some "duty" boot reviews and cuts. I'm curious about Haix, as I like them, but there are tons of brands and quality levels.
Yes please, Danner too!
