  • In this week's episode of Gent's Talk, presented by BULOVA Canada, our Gents sit down with Tommy Smythe who is a lifestyle television personality and an advocate for numerous charitable campaigns around HIV awareness. Tommy also talks about being an entrepreneur and what it's like to be part of the same family as Canadian hockey icon Conn Smythe and the current toxic culture around hockey.
    About Gent's Talk:
The Gent's Talk series, powered by Gent's Post and presented by BULOVA Canada and supported by Ride Rude, is an episodic podcast/video style conversation with the leading gents and rising stars of industry. Guests on the show thus far include Russell Peters, Jonathan Osorio, Wes Hall, Karl Wolf, Diogo Snow, Nick Bateman, Justin Wu and many more. The conversations range from career, mental health, family, relationships, business, and everything in between. Even more excitingly, Gent's Talk is the first ever podcast in video format to be featured on all Air Canada domestic/international flights. Our intention is to have a raw and unfiltered conversation with our guests about their lives, how they achieved their successes, lessons learned along the way, and the challenges of climbing that mountain.

Tommy was my favorite part of watching Sarah Richardson's older shows. He is an incredible talent and has so much charisma!

Tommy Smythe is a class act. He explained the split w Sarah so graciously it only makes me love him more! Best wishes in your future endeavors and I’m SURE your new venture will be very successful bc of your talent & your heart. This grandma from Michigan USA sends you a big hug.

He's very honest and authentic. Sometimes you outgrow people and it's clear that happened between him and SR.

Great discussion. Thanks for the insight into your split from Sarah Richardson. Was missing you and wondered what happened. Good luck and glad you moved forward in your new endeavour ❤ love your outlook and philosophy

Honest, authentic, down to earth, philanthropic, and warm. So much more dimensional than the media Tommy we saw. I’d love to see what he’d do with his own show. Anyone who loved him as a true friend would listen and let him spread his wings.

Makes me sad to hear that he and Sarah had a "break-up" as he calls it. By all accounts, based on watching past shows, Tommy was practically a member of Sarah's family and he was close to their daughters and Sarah even had a "Tommy room" designed for him in her cottage. Hopefully they can at least become friends again some day.

So great to learn more about Tommy apart from his lifestyle shows. More of his depth as a person showed up and a great set of perspectives on life and work.

Listening to this is so bittersweet. I follow Sarah Richardson. I enjoy the new interaction with Alexander. But, lately I find the designs a bit one note. I miss the old collaboration. The extra spark or classic cool the others bring. And, I have so missed Tommy. So, it’s good…this is good. And, now I’ll look for Tommy and Kate and Lindsay. (But, It will still be sad to watch old episodes.)

I appreciate your honesty Sarah Richards and you were adorable and you knew it was hard when it had to go in another direction I have had friends in the past that that is very heartbreaking you are right though in the end the big lesson and the goodness that comes from it and I will tell you after a certain amount of years you both come back together it's not the same it's not the simples sweetness that it began with it's a deeper richer understanding of ourselves and others and we share that and we breathe again each other's breaths and we laugh at the same time fingers crossed you and Sarah will eventually cross paths and things will be as they should

I just cannot imagine what could have caused the team to break up - including Kate and Lindsey.... it just is mind-boggling to me; this is not just emotional for them, but for all of us out here that watched them from day one - as I have; really sad about this.

This was a bit difficult to listen to because over the past ten years I have found such joy watching the collaboration between Tommy and Sarah at a time of life I really benefited from such a fun and beautiful friendship.
Additionally: I’m in my mid-40s, love and have cats, and am an active Christian, yet, from my perspective - I see nothing to be overcome by that from a LGBTQ 2+ perspective. I have friends and family who identify with that lifestyle and I love them so much. Even middle aged, cat-loving Christians can be friends with you Tommy. 😉

Tommy is the bigger talent and certainly the better person. Many years ago I had the misfortune of being in line at a store with Sarah behind me. She's a total Karen. Never watched anything she was involved in ever since and definitely won't buy anything she has a hand in.

did all three of them have the respect to go talk to Sarah face to face before they left? or was it they have new & different ideas than Sarah? with Sarah it is one boss & owner but now they are all equal partners, it is always about the money. There no loyalty or grateful for being given a job back when. it will catch up one day. Love you Sarah.

He literally didn’t share a single detail. Everyone knows they had a break up. She unfollowed him on all social media. He was so kind and diplomatic. Unless this is Sarah you’re on glue!

I loved Tommy .. but he sounded very ungrateful for the opportunity and the visibility that Sarah gave him. Biting the hand that fed him for years. Loyalty and humility aren't his strong suit. His business will FAIL!!

It's a real sign of immaturity that you take sides in something you know nothing about. There is always two sides to everything and you can listen to one side neutrally without the need to take a side in something that is none of your business, quite frankly. Unlike you, Tommy sounds like someone who is thoughtful and mature, using a bad experience to move forward.

He’s clearly not alone in wanted to develop beyond employee sidekick role, as evidenced by two other designers leaving with him. We know nearly every fabric and other decision was presented as SRs with the other designers mostly just agreeing that it was all good, but it’s reality tv and even looking only at whaT was presented, we have no idea how much others talents were suppressed or not credited. Obviously this was not easy or smooth, but also likely necessary.
