  • From the collection of Ben (80s_90s_00s_cars on Instagram) we have this amazing 1987 (Phase II) Renault 5 GT Turbo. Once a fire breathing hooligan wagon, now the 5 GT enjoys a quiet retirement. What is it really like to drive?

the 5 GT turbo was one of the most extreme fun drives I ever owned back in the early '90's, If you push it to the full limit which I think is fair to say you weren't really able to do here James, it out performs and out handles all other hot hatches of the day and once tweeked to 180bhp as mine was, it out performed many more high performance cars, me in my modern Porsche today would not be able to keep up with me in the '90's in that Renault! on a b road that is, mine finally blew up of course ! great video J thanks.

Mine was also tweaked like yours and I'd agree it was a hard car to catch on back roads. Well with a better driver than me. Sadly I run out of talent in a peddle car, but friends of mine who had driving talent reckoned it was a very fast car, if twitchy at the limit for average drivers.. It's one reason why I ended up with an Integra Type R. It's _far_ more forgiving of low talent drivers like myself.

Being a boy Racer of the 80s I still remember the first time I came across one, a phase 1 electric blue having a ding dong with a Astra GTe. They were blisteringly quick compared to its contemporaries like the MG Metro turbo, XR2 and Nova GTE and probably quicker than the legendary Escort RS Turbo in real world shinangigans. It was a car way ahead of its time and showed the future would be lightweight low capacity turbo charged engines pushing out big power. Modern cars like the mk8 fiesta ST and Fiat Arbath owe everything to the mighty Renault 5 GT Turbo. 👍

A Renault 5 Turbo is only as fast as the recovery truck which it's on the back of.

    • @TeamZSsx
      @TeamZSsx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@JonJon-dk3nh If you are going to post that at least back it up with some AA / RAC data? I have no skin in the game as I've never owned one but back then the Renault 5 GT Turbo was the Golf R of its day!

@@TeamZSsx Head gaskets. I agree they were very popular and tuned ones sounded nice if the owner was brave enough to give it some welly. My friend spent a year buying parts and tuning his. I went to a car show in it and got a AA recovery truck home. Whilst waiting hours for the recovery truck, two other Renault 5 Turbo owners were waiting for their's too (all head gaskets). I like all cars but the 205 GTI would be a safer bet. More driver focused and reliability. A standard Turbo Technics 1.9 GTI was just as fast as my mates 5 turbo which he spent all year tuning as well.

When I was 17 (now 44) I had a Fiat Uno 70SX (70 bhp) and these were loosely considered a 'warm' hatch. A 120 bhp Renault 5 GT Turbo was pure unobtainium back then!

@BOB1 CLO I was teasing. I used to drive a MK1 golf GTi 1.8 campaign. Was more solid than the Renault though a bit slower.

      @entropy5431 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@BOB1 CLO I never got to drive a Renault 5 turbo, I suspect if I had I would have loved it. I did drive (not own) a Pug 205 GTi for 2 weeks and it was great. I always loved the MK1 golf GTi and thought it fast until I drove a friend's RS Turbo which was a game changer, in a straight line at least 😀

The 5 GT Turbo is the only production car (Group N) that ever won a World Rally Championship race (Cote d'Ivoire 1989). Quite an achievement for the old Cleon-Fonte first released in 1962 on the Floride.

I had a 1986 phase 1 in pearl white on a 'D' plate. and loved it. Drove it to within an inch of it's life for 6 months when I was a wee 19 year old in 1989. Hot starts were always an issue as the car sat right above the turbo and the fuel would evaporate. A cooling fan was added to avoid this but the fan was notorious for seizing. Also an issue was the alloy radiator if you didn't use the correct de-ionised water and furred it up internally, blocking it. Further along, had a phase 2 R5 GT Turbo in Red (1989 G) on which I swapped the radiator out almost immediately. Phase 2 had the electric windows, was a bit more refined, slightly less turbo lag, had the sharper, painted body kit, roof spoiler above the rear window, different patterns on the seats and different wheels to a phase 1. Still a nightmare on hot starts though! My final R5 GT Turbo was identical to the one featured but the Electric Blue was only available on a 1987 D or E plate (on the phase 1 it with the unpainted black plastic bodykit). Great cars to drive if you can forgive the hot start, rattles and paper thin bodywork! Now I want one again having seen this.

I had one of the last ones in tungsten grey. Still the most fun car I've owned. So light and responsive, and you could drive it quick without being totally illegal. Eventually I had to sell it as I was doing long commutes, but I always let it warm up and idle before turning off, and did 63k troublefree miles on the original turbo. I did find that is was a bit sensitive to tyres - I went to Pirellis from the original Michelins, and these lasted a lot longer, but it did not grip as well at the front. An enormously fun car to punt down a lane!!

What I’d give for a dream garage with a 5GT, 205 1.9Gti and an Uno turbo inside.
There are plenty of others that a good case could be made for, but for me those three sum up the 80’s and who and what this market was aimed at.
Everyone is going to go Dewey-eyed about the cars of their youth when they reminisce, but I honestly think the era of these lightweight hot hatches is one that will never be beaten.
You were a very lucky person if you were young, enthusiastic and able to get your hands on one of these. A fun, uncomplicated and thrilling experience without all the congestion, cameras and misery you have today.

Had one from new and drove it all the way to Cyprus back in the day. Did over 30k miles in one year in one. It was fantastic but lacked air con and the driver's door armrest got pretty painful on a long drive. Remember sticking some sponge onto the door rest. Slept in the back in the former Yugoslavia for a couple of hours (been driving for 12 + hours) and couldn't walk when I woke up. It was tiny. May buy another good example if nostalgia gets me one day.

Nice to see that it was originally a Linningtons car. My parents bought a Renault 12 estate from the same Portsmouth dealership in 1973 - NBK 403M if it's still knocking around (which I very much doubt!).

My Renault 5 gt turbo was a beast with massive boost and tons of torque steer. I loved it, it was a proper handful of flame spitting pops and bangs.

What a delight and nice surprise! A modern day review of my favoured motorised roller-skate. James, did Ben first take you out and show you how it's done? It seems you were a bit reticent with your driving, when such a fun car does inspire confidence. It was the best car-related decision I ever made to keep mine and sympathetically restore it, with a few modernising touches.
Oh dear, if you go out in the R5GTT and you don't get accosted at least once by a potential buyer, you need to go out again! It's at that point when you meet the real passion that follows these wee beasties around. As for the lack of turbo-lag or torque-steer, you really weren't giving it enough welly. Yes, in relaxed mode, the car behaves just like a top-of-the-range car should, with the turbo not being kept too busy.
Give it the beans though and there's still not too many modern machines that you can't scream past at full-chat - back in the day any BMW was simply fair game. More often than not you'd win by better knowing how to handle the speeds though you might also quite quickly change your mind about the "straight-toward-that-tree" line you're taking! There's only one drawback to driving such a car these days. It's the idiots who "see an old car" and just pull out in front of you regardless - it's then you appreciate the "big hand from the sky" in the form of disc brakes all round!
When I've taken other turbo drivers out, (Ford, Fiat etc.) their very first remarks are about the comfort and superior ride. It's better than my 2009 205GT Renault Laguna Coupe, which is harsh by comparison. Every turbo car handles differently and it takes a go or two before you can relax and really enjoy cocking the inside rear wheel as you should. Jump into a different car and it's almost like going back to square one in learning its quirks.
Your £10k valuation is a bit out-of-date - an unmolested example will need an agreed-valuation insurance of around £15k with top examples getting closer to £20k - crazy prices for what is meant to be fun car, but the crippling GTT tax on spare parts these days forces the issue.

Now that's a car! Never got around to buying one of these as a lad, look at one and it had turbo issues so walked away. An itch I still need to scratch, maybe one day..

If I remember correctly it was the phase 1 version which had hot starting issues which was largely resolved when the phase 2 came out. I liked the R5 GT turbo more than the Pug 205 GTi in the late 80s. Epic car.

I drove one back in day, actually very good to drive nice steering wheel to hold decent mid range felt pretty good to drive and a lot better than the base models. My second favourite after the astra GTE 16v which I had for about 4 years and felt the business.

The series 1 5 TS was pretty quick too. We had one back in 1982 and you could easily scare passengers lifting a back wheel while cornering. And it had the front to back engine leant at an angle thus allowing the spare wheel to fit under the bonnet too.
Easily spot a Mark one by the square clocks in the dash and highback seats. Fabulous car. Wish we never sold it.

So funny that you were surprised how good it was. I owned one in grey in the late 80s and totally regret selling it. Will have to buy one now. The only criticism that can be leveled against it was that on wet roads you have to drive it 30% slower or it will try and kill you

It was the car to have in the late 80’s for twenty somethings 😀. It was a absolutely hoot to drive back in the day, especially when the turbo kicked in. Balances, poised, light (1.4 litres). The only protagonist was the Peugeot 1.6 at the time. Again, super light, super balanced, but just could not keep up with the GT. Game changer was the Pug 1.9 205. Not as balanced as the 1.6, but she was a beautiful ride. All the cars were light as a feather, hence a wonderful driving experience. Drive baldly, or having a bad day on the road, you could pay for it. In a nutshell, a euro scudmobile will weigh more nowadays with...let’s face it, no fun at all. God bless the days of FUN!

i had a tuned pearl white 86 gtt as my first car in 1990,in three years it needed a gearbox a dozen clutch cables for some strange reason and a few wheel bearings. but it to this day brings back fond memories.had some epic races with rs turbos,ae86 twin cams and golf 16v's.every thing else probably on the road that wanted a go for that matter.but sure what else would you expect of a teenage boy racer with a 5 turbo lol even remember being pulled by the cops and instead of the telling off i was expecting got challenged to a race with the cops rs turbo.....the 90's really was a different era

I drove a mates back in the late 90's and we were all used to nova sr/gsi's and the little r5 was a stonker compared to them, it pulled hard and the gear change was slick as can be - i regret never getting one... I guess i got its grandson in the 172, though. All the stories of overheating were down to poor maintenance - like the 172 i had, my mates r5 went on to 200k no problems.

Had one, sprayed turquoise. 190bhp with a boost controller. Ended up going the same way Beirut did. Went bang, but went like shit off the shovel. Interior was Spartan, 2 seats, pedal, handbrake and dials. Literally what I left inside of it. I knocked off at a guess 100kg off the original weight. Miss it, alot.

Believe it or not, it wasn't the head gasket or turbo failure that ended the cars life. It was a mixture of rust and a ex gf. Bitch sold my alloys for 50 quid.

  • @dj_paultuk7052

As a R5 GTT fanboy back in the day. One of the tricks was to fit "Saab APC" (Automatic performance control) out of a scrapped 900. The APC system was the worlds first electronic boost controller and it was a separate loom in the saab. So a piece of cake to take out and fit in any other car. There were then easy ways to mod APC to adjust the boost curve. Of course it also gave you knock detection, so some protection from blowing the thing up.
