Now that we’ve had some time to digest the monumental Amex Hilton REVAMP… I think it’s time to revisit the BEST hotel credit card duo on the market, that being the Hilton Honors Aspire & Surpass to see if they still stack up despite the raised annual fees, removal of Priority Pass, and or the addition of certain credits and benefits.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this Duo, worth it still?

That had worked for a long time and its even more of a sure thing now that the credit is a general airline credit and you don't even need to select your airline anymore.

Does Amex prohibit using the $200 airline credit ($50 per quarter) on United Travel Bank? I am honestly not sure and I absolutely don’t want to make Amex mad.

In all honesty, these cards got buffed for my personal use case 👀 I wasn't strongly considering them before, but now that they have more Hilton-specific credits rather than Priority Pass access (which overlaps with basically every other travel card) they're more valuable to me. Might be an unpopular opinion, but that's my take on it!

The changes make both cards better IMO. Maybe not for the sock drawer crowd but definitely for the Hilton loyalist. Hilton. For the Stay.

Great breakdown here Anthony! I definitely think these changes benefit some, and harm some. Those who benefit are (obviously) Hilton loyalists, and honestly a lot of us who are avid Credit Card Users, and keep track of all the benefits/credits we are using to maximize them. However, for a lot of people they don't want to do that much work and breaking up the credits into different quarterly or semiannual credits definitely involves a lot more work haha. Definitely understand and fully agree with your point though in the sense that a lot of us typically use Points & Miles for flights, so the new Flight Credit as an example basically forces us to pay cash for multiple flights and will probably end up making us spend more $ than we otherwise would have.
Absolutely man! And yep, if we are all going to be enthusiasts like we say we are, and use points, now I have to use cash to even use the dang credits!
At least, taxes should count, and the United Travel Bank hack still works so there’s that ha.

As I watch this video, I'm at a Tapestry property in midtown Manhattan, and as a Diamond member I appreciate the generous $47 daily meal credit and I love getting the premium wifi.

Honestly, being in NYC it makes it easy to justify the Hilton Aspire AF. The Conrad New York Downtown has a standard room reward (90k) for a deluxe suite that's usually between $850-1100/night depending on the night. Just with that alone I'm already positive. Lets just hope that AMEX doesn't put a cap on the free night redemption.
Oh yeah for sure, just stay there each Valentine’s Day and you easily double the annual fee in value every year. And a good night too ha.

Personally don’t think it has been nerfed. I think they made them more synergetic. You can use the Surpass credits for regular hiltons and the aspire for the resorts.
If you want to have only hotel cards they cover good everyday categories to (especially the Surpass, like you said). Very optimal cards for the Hilton loyalist in my opinion.
I think especially if they want to, they can use the surpass to spend 15K for the free night plus have the aspire for the second free night. Might not be the most optimal but would rack up a lot of Hilton points haha.

I’ll keep her Surpass for at least another year because I really want to see how well I can use the full $200, will use them at the on-site restaurants I think.

The only thing i dont like is the Airline credit. $50 per quarter is trash. Im going to put it in the United Travel Bank and i bet it works
I didn't really care about the Priority Pass credit because it's like TSA Precheck. I have it on several cards. I just checked my Hilton app, I've had 12 Stays and 31 nights this year so far

Can you use the surpass Hilton credit to buy Hilton points in quarters you aren’t staying at a Hilton?
That would be great, but Hilton points use points.com and I don’t think that would code to be eligible for the $50 credit unfortunately.

Yeah, I just figured if you happen to pay cash for a Hilton hotel, that’ll trigger it and or eating at the on-site restaurant will as well, pretty much anything you can bill to the room, will trigger the credit.

Surpass might become my go to grocery card for 2024. and I still plan to try and get the Aspire in 2024. Think it still has a ton of value and easily covers the annual fee.
Honestly agreed, I won’t personally because I still love Curve + Yotta, but could see the Surpass being a good Hilton persons catch all card.

Good video! What are your thoughts on the Hilton Business ($95 AF, very similar to original Surpass and has PP still).
Was considering the Surpass before the change-up, but as I don’t see myself using a Hilton hotel every three months, can’t really recoup the new AF).
Hmm, Business is better if you can’t use the $50 credits on the Surpass AT ALL.
So I guess just see if you can use them, if not, business id go with personally I think.

I chose the no fee Hilton card. The multipliers are not much different for gas, restaurants and groceries between the no fee and the Surpass and between those two, online retail would be 4x on Surpass would be 3x on the regular. Restaurants is 1x differential between all 3 cards at 5x, 6x and 7x respecially. They are all 3x on everything else. Their multipliers are weird. Its at Hilton hotels obviously where you obviously gain the most at 7x, 12x and 14x respectively.
You know that’s a very good point people overlook, retail is just 1x more than the general 3x everything.
For sure, and the no annual fee is a lot easier to stomach ha, without having to worry about quarterly credits too etc.

I might have an idea on how to take advantage of the quarterly flight credit. Plan LA to LV travel around the end of one quarter/beginning of the next. Book oneway flight to destination. After new quarter begins then book you return flight… this could backfire a bit as the pricing on the return trip could be high but worth the gamble? Only 2 trips could take advantage of all 4 quarters.

$200 flight credit WILL trigger United Travelbank. So just buy $50 each quarter and you're set.

I work for the cell phone company so I buy my phones outright unlocked so if I swap to another one I can just switch my service no issue so its good to know the phone protection thing. I do pay for protection seperately tho so it is a bit redundant anyways.

The $50 Hilton credit on the Surpass also applies to the room rate.
I actually purchased a stay with HGV on 10/17 and on 10/21 they credited me $50 back.

@@AnthonyVenture Well It gives me the option to use it within the next year. Of course I'd have to sit-in on a 2 hour presentation after I check-in when I do go. But yeah for $199 they offered a 4 day 3 night stay. Minus the $50 credit which was a nice surprise, so it really only cost $149. Not a bad deal. I plan to also get the Aspire card in January.

Even better, they are also giving me a $200 credit to use at one of the six Hilton properties they are offering. I think it has a 6 month expiration time frame from when it’s given. Plus an upgraded room at HGV resort for free. I kept declining and the guy kept sweetening the deal.

I think we should be able to take advantage of the Hilton $200 resort credit whether we are staying at a Hilton property or not as long as we charge it to our card a resort location it should trigger the credit. I have stays planned in Myrtle Beach and Vegas next year there are multiple Hilton resorts near the hotels im staying at, I should be able to get a free meal and drinks!

The new changes will benefit 2 main parties: 1. Hilton, and 2. Hilton Loyalists.
Hilton runs a business and they want to focus on profit. There's not much profit when your customers use the card one, 2 times per year ONLY to maximize all the credits then sock drawer.
Good point here Titiung! From the business perspective, the credits will immediately create for profit for Hilton and Amex as a whole.
