Iceland Volcano Eruption Update; Cyclical Bursts of Activity Occur

  • In Iceland, a volcanic eruption is still going strong on its 27th day. Lava has built up to as much as 75 feet in thick areas, but something else interesting has recently occurred. Lava has recently started erupting in a fairly predictable increasing and decreasing cycle almost like that seen in a geyser. This video will discuss the ongoing eruption, and why this cyclical activity is occurring.

    The overflow of the crater was mesmerizing, I was watching it live when it happened, I have never seen that in other eruptions in iceland.

    Yep but keep in mind that IMO is confirming that Svartsengi's shallow storage chamber is inflating at higher rate, so when the eruption ends, the inflation will shoot up as current inflation rate is around 4mm per day while 3mm are feeding the eruption. When that stops, it'll turn to 7mm per day, so it won't take long for storage chamber to refill completely and go another magma run in 20-30 days at most. Check GPS data and you'll see what I mean.

    I’d love some more updates on the Fernandina’s eruption. It’s now actively creating new land for that island due to lava reaching the ocean and that is just as fascinating as the Reykanes eruption

    The next few weeks should be interesting, with the current eruption winding down while there is a new weak inflationary signal in the Svartsengi area. I can't help but wonder if after this eruption ends if we will see a return to the cyclic/periodic eruptive cycle we saw previously.

    For the geyser like cycles involving a cavity, do you think this cavity is like the one left empty at Thrihnukagigur? After all, that one is part of the Brennisteinsfjoll volcanic system, and should have behaved relatively similar to Reykjanes during its eruptions. It seems like it would be a great way to study how cyclical volcano activity works, considering that both an active and an extinct, empty, and accessible version exist.

    Fagradallsfjall 2021 eruption had this cyclical behavior during most of the eruption with activity completely ceasing between those cycles.

    How is the lava effusion rate measured? And how accurate is the measurement?

    • @aperson1
      @aperson1 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's measured through a variety of means, though the estimated volume of the lava flow is certainly one. The quoted uncertainty is 3.6 +/- 0.7 m^3/s (or between 2.9 and 4.3, likely on the higher end considering its ongoing activity)

    I was watching another video on this eruption, and the person who was covering the volcano said that the main sill/magma chamber that's been feeding these eruptions was starting to fill and cause uplift. If that is true, and this eruption doesnt end by the time the main chamber rushes into the fault that the eruption is on, would it cause the current eruption to go on for longer? Or like with Mauna Loa/Kilauea, would the inflation cause the vents to pinch closed and prevent an eruption until the next drainage?

    • @Dragrath1
      @Dragrath1 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If memory serves (I'm out of date by a week or so due to a family vacation to see the total solar eclipse) there has been a very low level amount of inflation for a while though it had been leveling off at some point so it is quite probable that inflation may be still ongoing. How this might impact the eruption itself depends a large deal on what is occurring within the system for example are minerals in the magma precipitating out along the conduit causing it to get gradually clogged? If so its a question of whether the pressure building in the magma sill complex below is able to dislodge some of that material. On the other hand as you noted the inflation itself could be constricting the channels too in which case the influx of magma may be starving off the system's own conduit leading to a feedback loop which shuts down activity fairly quickly once a certain threshold is reached. Really there are many possibilities depending on what is going on in the volcanic plumbing down there. Volcanoes are complicated.

    What is going on with the main chamber that has been filling the dyke? Is it refilling, and at what rate? Is there a possibility of it recharging the ongoing eruption before it seals up?

    • @josephshreeves8192
      @josephshreeves8192 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It varies, but overall, the magma chamber is refilling. However, it is noticeably slower than the 5(ish) cubic meters per second during the periods in between the previous eruptions. I have not seen the Iceland meteorological office put out an exact rate at which it is refilling though.

    just wondering aloud here, but what would happen if you flew a helicopter over the lava pool and dropped in a large amount of sand or clay into the lava, and what the composition would change into as it flowed out? would the sand turn the lava into some sort of more glass like material, like obsidian? it would be a fun experiment (if it has not already been done in the past) to put different materials in the lava and see how it actually changed the materials flowing out. maybe we could make some sort of new super material for construction, and maybe it would be a big waste of time and money. if anyone has any info on this it would be interesting to hear back from you.

      I wonder what kind of influence the absence of sunlight would have on the supporting magma flow underneath the surface.
      On the other hand, you are able to notice a glowing lava flow better when it is dark outside than during the daytime.
      Perhaps this makes people think that there are more or more intense volcanic eruptions during nighttime.

      No it is his real voice. It comes across that way because he is autistic - he explains this, shows his face and gives his real first name (Tim) at the start of his recent livestream from Iceland.
      But did it not at least occur to you from the voice that he might be autistic - I would have thought that was common knowledge these days? And do you not think it is a bit childish to make fun of someone's voice - and a great deal worse than childish to knowingly poke fun at an autistic person?
      By the way this site is actually about volcanoes not voices, so you might have noticed that yet again Tim has produced an excellent video giving an awful lot of professional-standard information in understandable form in just five minutes. Do either of you have the ability to produce any sort of even half-decent video yourselves?
