This Week in Volcano News; White Island Erupts, Kelimutu's Unusual Activity

- This week, New Zealand experienced its most notable volcanic eruption in half a decade as the White Island volcano produced a plume of ash and gasses visible from the North Island. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the alert level was raised at the Kelimutu volcano due to a change in the appearance of two of its three crater lakes. And, on Sumatra, the Suoh volcano produced an unexpected phreatic eruption. This video will discuss these stories and list the 46 volcanoes which are currently erupting around the planet.

I have some good news! The remaining $35.65 from the larger pool which everyone donated for Ruang's volcano relief was just given to help the victims of Mount Marapi's deadly recent lahar. This means that all of the original donation money has now been spent on volcano disaster relief in Indonesia! Good job everyone!

"Unexpected eruption" No. There are scientismists who like shamans of old have no clue that Volcano's are electrical. Then there are those who knew that due to the incredible amount of current dumped into the earth from May 10 solar flares that there will be EXPECTED eruptions.

If I was to give some advice in case us kiwis have more volcanic activity, 'Wh' has a strong 'F' sound, and 'Tane' is pronounces 'Ta-Nay' phonetically.
All up would be 'Fah-ka-ta-nay' said fairly fluidly :)

White Island is shrowded in smoke cloud this morning 27th May 10.40am.
The nearly 4mag yesterday ( Sunday morning @ 9.02am was 'different.' There was a noise like a wind then a very sharp jolt. Not usual. Usual is a rumble then shaking side to side or a rolling wave. It is not usual for 3×eruptions in successive days. No.

Nice to know these areas around active volcanoes have an alert level. Doesn't guarantee safety but at least allows local residents to use precaution. ♥️👍

BTW, I had acquaintances who were at the deadly white island eruption a few years back, and I always remember their stories about it, scary AF.
it's amazing how many volcanoes are active in Indonesia. I hope the locals stay vigilant.
The whole country & area is a major plate boundary collision so not that surprising.
IIRC, something like a quarter of the world's active volcanoes are in Indonesia.
Indonesia is extremely geologically active, being part of the Pacific 'ring of fire'. Unfortunately this is their norm. They suffer huge earthquakes too - the 2004 boxing day Tsunami originated there.

Another fabulous volcano update! Any plans to celebrate your 300k subs? If not, might I suggest something along the lines of a vid about the known state of earths geology 300k years ago? Though I know 300k years doesn't amount to much in geologic timescales maybe a quick recap of known major events around the time period?

This is crazy i JUST watched "the volcano" documentary about the 2019 eruption that killed tourists.
The number of these volcano explosions that are described as "unexpected" is a testament to how dangerous these things are.
In the 1600's, the biggest volcanic eruption in the world occurred in Peru, and, it cooled off the Entire planet for one year.

Yeah mate, it's 50km off shore.
No one's been allowed on the island since the 2019 eruptions, which is why the monitoring equipment is no longer working.
The prevailing wind means even a large eruption is unlikely to have any physical effect on anyone
Yea everyone’s okay, White Island is always been a very active volcano, there was a major eruption from White Island in 2001 which caused parts of the volcano to collapse,
Could you by chance do a video talking about Kelimutu (and other similar volcanos with a crater lake) and why the two different lakes are a different color although they are very close to one another? I assume its mostly heat but I figure various minerals might have a hand in it too. Even if its just a short that'd be cool!

White Island has calmed. A small black discharge. ( that is never good. Usual is a white plume).
3.40pm. Monday 27th May 2024.
There is a small sttlement 'Tirohonga'. They often get the sulphur smell and fall. N.E. of the Island. A plane flight inspection on Saturday revealed recent Sulphur deposit in the Crater. Nominal ash the report said but the folks at Tirohonga said otherwise.

People aren't allowed on white island anymore and it can only be seen by helicopter. White Island belongs to and is governed by the Maori people of New Zealand. They declared white island sacred ground after the 2020 eruption killed 22 people. Some of the dead's bodies were never found on white island or were unreachable. So the Maori declared it sacred land to honor those who are left behind and let them rest in peace. This designation by the Maori means that nobody can ever set foot on the island again, and anyone who does will likely face heavy penalties by the Maori and New Zealand government for desiccating sacred lands.

White Island has erupted in the last 50 years!! On December 9, 2019 it erupted with tour groups on the island. Twenty-two people died, either in the explosion or from injuries sustained, including two whose bodies were never found and were later declared dead. A further 25 people suffered injuries, with the majority needing intensive care for severe burns.
