Best hip-hop song in the last 10 years IMO. Never come across a rapper who has the ability to tell a story so descriptively, but retain lyrical complexity and decent flow.
Sing about me, I'm dying of thirst. Best song I have ever heard, hands down. Its impact on me as a person and as a lover of music and Kendrick is incredible. I think you completely misunderstood the hook in Real. Kendrick is criticizing the attitude of Compton culture, particularly outgoing women. He's very critical of their propensity to call themselves "real". It's purposefully vapid. He thinks they are foolish and misguided, and made a hook that mirrors that.

Since I started listening to hip hop like 5-6 years ago. Been digging a lot into it. Old classics, midstream, somewhat underground. My top 20 albums in nor order, would be like- It takes a nation of millions to hold us back - Public Enemy Atliens - Outkast Jay Z - Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint Nas - Illmatic, It Was Written Run DMC - Raising Hell Tupac - Me Against the world, Don Killuminati, the Seven day theory. Eric B & Rakim - Paid In Full Wu Tang Clan - 36 Chambers Eminem - Slim Shady LP, The Eminem Show, MMLP Kanye West - The College Dropout Raekwon - Cuban Linxx Kendrick Lamar - good kid m.A.A.d city, To pimp a butterfly Slick Rick - The Adventures of Slick Rick Big L - Lifestylez ov da poor & dangerous
I dont like ATliens beat that much, I think Aquemini was a superior album and song with more jazzy and laid back beats, but I guess that's just my style.
agreed with the fact that they are both illustrations of their city, but kendrick adds his emotional flair to the narrative too, whereas nas puts more raw lyricism tbh.
Mohammad M Damn was a very mainstream move for Kendrick to release, especially following up one of the most abstract and comprehensive hip-hop releases of all time. And if you think DAMN had a better executed concept than GKMC you need to relisten. Personally Section.80 and his mixtapes are the only projects I like less than DAMN. LOVE, LOYALTY, and GOD really took away from the whole album
Honestly at this point, after TPAB, GKMC, S80, OD, and TKLEP considering how Kendrick has made great music, and great lyrics, for quite some time, and very consistently, if he gets one more great album out there, he deserves to be put as one of the best to ever do it.
I've said this too..if Kendrick puts out 3 more albums in his career that "top" GKMC and TPAB then he'll be the greatest to have done it. Especially in terms of substance, lyrics, theme, production etc.
+Benjamin Acevedo He's already widely considered as top 10 all time. And its really really really hard to top TPAB bro. So don't expect it to happen. TPAB is the highest rated hiphop album ever by critics. If he releases a couple more good to great albums he'd be top 3 all time in my opinion. Cause he already has 2 instant classics, and great mixtapes under his belt. Only a handful of rappers have 2 Classic albums. People set the bar wayyy too high these days on best rappers all time. No disrespect to the greats, but TPAB is better than most if not all their albums. People put too much bias on the old school...
+Justin Peralta yea you're right. But I honestly feel like Kendrick has it in him to make even more great music (not saying it will top TPAB) but just music that he loves. I really respect and love the face that Kendrick takes his time with a record and doesn't skimp on any part of it, the lyrics, the melodies, the instrumentations, the messages, is something he always puts 100% into. And I honestly don't feel like it's ever his intention to make albums that top the previous ones, I feel like he just makes great music that he truly feels is great. I could see a top 5 spot, definitely top 10 as well. How do you feel about the collab album him and Cole are doing?
6 years, and I still think this is the best new-age rap album of all time, some albums tried to be like this one, examples: Travis Scott - Rodeo (2015) J Cole - 2014 Forest Hills Drive (2014) Drake - If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late (2015) even Kendrick’s 2 albums after this one are 2 of the best new-age rap albums: Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly (2015) Kendrick Lamar - DAMN. (2017) good kid, m.A.A.d city is definitely a masterpiece, tracks like: Backseat Freestyle The Art Of Peer Pressure good kid m.A.A.d city (Feat. MC Ehit) Swimming Pools (Drank) Sing About Me, I’m Dying Of Thirst Are tracks that make Kendrick Lamar the best rapper right now.
rodeo wasn't trying to be like this TBAP was better lyrically wise and the message was deeper, DAMN was mainstream and a bit diluted. If you're reading this slapped but it was less of a story then this.
I am still not over that gunshot at about a minute into the song. Kendrick stops rapping while the instrumentals just continue. Really adds impact and meaning to the song
# Eminem has like 2 good albums (slim shady lp and infinite) and the rest of his stuff ranges from ok to utter garbage. Kendrick’s worst album, Section.80 is better than Eminem’s best. Kendrick’s better in every conceivable way, writing, flow, production choices, song topics literally anything he beats him. But hey that’s just me, why do you prefer Eminem?
@@claymoregang2979 umm have you ever actually listened to Eminem? Because Infinite is not one of his best albums lol, I don't know who told you that. SSLP, MMLP and TES are the classics, and nobody on Earth thinks Section.80 is better than them. GKMC and TPAB are the only Kendrick albums comparable
# Well somebody does think that section.80 is better, is me. But it’s all subjective, that’s just my perspective. But yes I have heard all his albums at least once.
You know an album like this has to be somewhere along the lines of amazing when it's like amongst a wide general range of people. The ones who strictly listen to the mainstream/radio bullshit without any musical insight, the ones who are not easily impressed and focus only on lyrics, the ones focused on instrumentals. The dense & intellectual listeners alike. I mean I see people who don't generally listen to hip hop yet come to love this album. I think this means something in itself, this takes skill. I loved so many things about this album, you pointed out all the strong pointers. 9/10
This album makes me worried that either Kendrick won't live up to the hype on his next album or people will just immediately dismiss it as inferior to this album (the Nas syndrome)
Seph Yorke I agree with you completely I just hope hype won't kill his next album. There are people (more than you would think actually) that believe he may have hit his peak too early.. I hope not.
As a metalhead who rarely goes out of his way to listen to other stuff, I decided to finally give Kendrick Lamar a try. I listened to Section 80 and GKMC, and I’m upset that I’ve been missing out on this art. Kendrick has an amazing ability to write compelling and in depth stories in his lyrics and flows while not giving up awesome instrumentals and just overall catchy music. It’s artists like this that make me wanna venture off into other hip hop
This has bangers, TPAB has the best flow for me from front to back, but Damn is without a doubt for me the favorite for casual listening. Each song in Damn can listened to independently and still fit well on a playlist with other songs.
The storytelling, flow, wordplay, rhyme schemes and production on this album make it a certified classic. Kendrick Lamar will go down alone of the greatest ever to grace the mic when all is said and done.
For me, this is a heavy 9 for me. Good story, progression, rapping, beats, how the album came together... I could listen to the whole album for hours on end, i've done it before.
Fleezy81That's one of my favorite songs by him. I think the hooks are weak from a purely sonic and melodic perspective but I also think that he is special in that he can pass off these raunchy hooks as tolerable and even mildly enjoyable.
I find it funny that Real was actually one of the hooks I liked most actually. My best to least best: 1. Now Or Never 2. The Recipe 3. M.A.A.D City 4. Black Boy Fly 5. Good Kid 6. Real 7. Sing about me, Dying of thirst 8. The Art of Peer Pressure 9. Money trees 10. Swimming Pools 11. Bitch Don't Kill my Vibe 12. Backstreet Freestyle 13. Sherane AKA Master Splinter's Daughter 14. Compton 15. Poetic Justice
I don’t think people talk enough about how swimming pools is meant to kinda satirize the “Trap party vibes” that people generally associate drugs with. When the trap parts start, he talks about getting sucked into the party (a common stage for substance abuse) but then the trap parts stop when Kendrick starts to reflect about his choices.
I think that Kendrick Lamar will always be held as the golden child of rap, and that no matter what he does he will be hailed for his golden tracks, instead of looking at his less esteemed bad works. All artists are susceptible to doing filler tracks and bad co-tracks.
I think honestly this would be my number 2 favourite album right under DSotM. It may even be Hip-Hop's answer to it since the themes of fear, money, losing ones mind, death all seem to be there. I think it took elements of everything that was on the radio at the time and totally made it work within context of his story telling which is one of the best things I ever heard. It's like an aural movie dude. The voice fading away on Sing About Me.... I almost cried.
I heard this album when it first came out, and after all these years, I've finally decided to give it a 10/10. The best story ever told in hip-hop history. Fav tracks: Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe, The Art of Peer Pressure, Money Trees, m.A.A.d. city, Swimming Pools (Drank), Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst Least fav track: N/A
Just my opinion 1: Money Trees 2: Sing About Me I'm Dying of Thirst 3: Maad City 4: Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe 5: Backseat Freestyle 6: Swimming Pools (Drank) 7: Good Kid 8: The Art of Peer Pressure 9: Sherane aka Master Splinters Daughter 10: Poetic Justice 11: Compton 12:Real Bonus Tracks 1: The Recipe black hippy remix 2: The Recipe 3: Now or Never 4: Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe Remix 5: Black Boy Fly
+CerealKi77er 1) Sing About Me I'm Dying of Thirst 2) Money Trees 3) The Art of Peer Pressure 4) Poetic Justice 5) Swimming Pools 6) Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe 7) Maad City 8) Backseat Freestyle 9) Sherane 10) Compton 11) Good Kid 12) Real
10/10 This album combines a very enjoyable and easily digestible sound with phenomenal storytelling and cohesiveness. Best Tracks: •Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe •Backseat Freestyle •Money Trees •m.A.A.d city •Swimming Pools (Drank) •Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst
I think it deserves a 10/10 just because you can tell how much time and detail k dot put into the album, how he took these real life stories/situation and can make you visualize it how he contrast dark situations into lighter situations for example 'Art of peer Pressure is a darker version of 'Money Trees, the good and bad of home invasion in Kendrick eyes as well as 'Sherane is the darker side of he feels about sherane compared to lighter 'Poetic justice Kendrick just perfectly portrays emotion
Maad City is for me but that would probably be third behind Sing About Me. The passion he has on Maad City is just crazy and Sing About Me is just so emotionally powerful
I was so angry when Macklemore won it I wanted kendrick But at least Drakes album And Jcole' - born sinner wasn't even nominated Defo done with the Grammys now
love this album to death. Everything about this album is almost perfect. The only thing i didnt like was that Poetic Justice sounded somewhat out of place. I've tried to listen to it many times but something puts me off about that track and only that track.
I really hate drake as much as the next guy, but there was something really off-putting about the song for me and i cant place a source for it and it didnt involve Drake. I actually think he did okay here.
That's crazy poetic justice was the first song I've heard of Kendrick and my friend played it in his car and he had sub woofers and it was the craziest song I've ever heard at the time. The bass was fucking wild
I have listened to this album more than any album I own and I am not even a hip hop head. One of, if not the best, albums in terms of structure, message and overall musicality I have ever heard. In my opinion it was the rap album that will change this genre from here on.
J cole and kendrick are great story tellers with great flow who can also appeal to the mainstream which is why they will both go down as one of the best ever, I'd argue j cole has the edge as he produces his own stuff too
Sing about me is insanely good! Just like the rest of this album. Transcends genre, and it will carry its spirit of time and place with it into the future. Kendrick is human in the first place and that's what makes it more mature than Ready to Die and Illmatic, not to gore anyone's ox, I love those albums just as much as the next person. Kendrick has a Dark side of the Moon in him. one love
I think the greatest thing about, producing music is feeling the story that it could create and shaping it with what ever tools you chose to use to produce with, it's a insane addiction that I'll never be able to subdue #producer #DJNekst
I thought he didn't include it on his top 200 list because he wanted one album per artist, but then i saw 2 death grips albums and 2 xiu xiu albums so i gotta say, you forgot this one Anthony, but other than that it was a pretty great list
backseat freestyle is my favorite. this album is just phenomenal. i don’t listen to a lot of rap music but i’ve heard such amazing things about kendrick, and i listened to this album first. one of the only albums i’ve ever listened to that i’ve been blown away by on the first listen
In My Opinion: g.o.o.d kid, m.a.a.d city: 10/10 Fav Tracks: Sherane a.k.a Master Splinter's Daughter, Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe, Backseat Freestyle, The Art Of Peer Pressure, Money Trees, Poetic Justice, Good Kid, M.A.A.D city, Swimming Pools, Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst, Real, Compton
Illmatic Ready To Die Reasonable Doubt The Chronic Doggystyle Amerikkkaz Most Wanted Low End Theory It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back Aquemini Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) GKMC is still in your Top 5??
"I'm real I'm real I'm rly rly real" is an awesome hook tf you talking about Fantano? Vapid? Maybe a little, but it contrasts so well with his more thought provoking verses. It doesn't need to be anything else. I actually love how simple the line is. I'm Real is one of Kendrick's best songs.
Well his LP is coming out in two weeks, March 23. I really hope it flies by this album, what I mean by that is I hope he it doesn't sound anything like this, and has a more Section.80 and Overly Dedicated sound. I am so fucking over GKMC. Everything from Kendrick that I listen to in 2015 is from his old stuff. I don't have a problem with it, I just listened to it one too many times. Coupled with the fact that you actually have to listen to the whole album together, it's tiring.

Since I started listening to hip hop like 5-6 years ago. Been digging a lot into it. Old classics, midstream, somewhat underground. My top 20 albums in nor order, would be like-
It takes a nation of millions to hold us back - Public Enemy
Atliens - Outkast
Jay Z - Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint
Nas - Illmatic, It Was Written
Run DMC - Raising Hell
Tupac - Me Against the world, Don Killuminati, the Seven day theory.
Eric B & Rakim - Paid In Full
Wu Tang Clan - 36 Chambers
Eminem - Slim Shady LP, The Eminem Show, MMLP
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Raekwon - Cuban Linxx
Kendrick Lamar - good kid m.A.A.d city, To pimp a butterfly
Slick Rick - The Adventures of Slick Rick
Big L - Lifestylez ov da poor & dangerous
*no order
I dont like ATliens beat that much, I think Aquemini was a superior album and song with more jazzy and laid back beats, but I guess that's just my style.
You should check out MF DOOM
Of course i listen to him. Madvillainy and Doomsday are great projects. More of an MC though.
Yeah Madvillainy isamazing
i would argue this is like a Compton Illmatic
Code Casual never thought about that but that's smart
not really, since illmatic doesnt have a narrative.
Soumyadeep Das but if u think about it they're both illustrations of their city and its highs and lows
agreed with the fact that they are both illustrations of their city, but kendrick adds his emotional flair to the narrative too, whereas nas puts more raw lyricism tbh.
true
Knowing the progression of Anthony's reviews, I was hoping Damn would be an 11 lol
Damn was fine. It was still better than a majority of albums this year anyways. 7 is a good rating. An accurate one too.
Joseph Su'a I would say light 8 for DAMN.
Strong 8, DAMN was lit as hell and Anthony is tripping. It's basically section 80 but Kendrick has more fame and experience
DAMN is only beneath TPAB, how the fuck did it not get a 9?
+Desphinx he's already almost there. I agree one more masterpiece will set him over the top
If Kendrick can top TPAB then he'll definitely go down in the top 10, he's a phenomenal artist.
6 years, and I still think this is the best new-age rap album of all time, some albums tried to be like this one, examples:
Travis Scott - Rodeo (2015)
J Cole - 2014 Forest Hills Drive (2014)
Drake - If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late (2015)
even Kendrick’s 2 albums after this one are 2 of the best new-age rap albums:
Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly (2015)
Kendrick Lamar - DAMN. (2017)
good kid, m.A.A.d city is definitely a masterpiece, tracks like:
Backseat Freestyle
The Art Of Peer Pressure
good kid
m.A.A.d city (Feat. MC Ehit)
Swimming Pools (Drank)
Sing About Me, I’m Dying Of Thirst
Are tracks that make Kendrick Lamar the best rapper right now.
rodeo wasn't trying to be like this TBAP was better lyrically wise and the message was deeper, DAMN was mainstream and a bit diluted. If you're reading this slapped but it was less of a story then this.
THE FUCK are you talking about? kendrick stans never fail to amaze me
This is the highest I've ever seen you rate a rap album. I'm glad it was this.
He recently rated Freddie Gibbs & Madlibs album "Pinata" a 9/10. I definitely agreed on that. Id give GKMC an 8
I believe he gave Madvillainy a pretty high rating, considering he covered it in classics week. Plus, The Money Store got a 10.

Industrial punk-hop with house influences
Oh god I feel like Pitchfork
I think Captain murphies - Duality deserved a higher score. Kendrick lamar is good but super overrated..
Clpping got a STRONG 9
Sing About Me goes in my top 5. Still gives me chills
i preferred it to SAM in the beginning
I am still not over that gunshot at about a minute into the song. Kendrick stops rapping while the instrumentals just continue. Really adds impact and meaning to the song
Kendrick Lamar really is a legend in the making. He's already up there with Pac, Biggie, Eminem, and Nas.
He’s so much better than Eminem it’s not even funny
@@claymoregang2979 except he's not
# Eminem has like 2 good albums (slim shady lp and infinite) and the rest of his stuff ranges from ok to utter garbage.

This album makes me worried that either Kendrick won't live up to the hype on his next album or people will just immediately dismiss it as inferior to this album (the Nas syndrome)
yeah i'm thinking that's going to happen too.
same actually...
fuck dat i jus wanna hear dope music what i know kendrick is capable of the tru tde fans will appreciate it fuck them bandwagon fans and critics
Seph Yorke I agree with you completely I just hope hype won't kill his next album. There are people (more than you would think actually) that believe he may have hit his peak too early.. I hope not.
Agreed :(
As a metalhead who rarely goes out of his way to listen to other stuff, I decided to finally give Kendrick Lamar a try. I listened to Section 80 and GKMC, and I’m upset that I’ve been missing out on this art. Kendrick has an amazing ability to write compelling and in depth stories in his lyrics and flows while not giving up awesome instrumentals and just overall catchy music. It’s artists like this that make me wanna venture off into other hip hop
what are good metal songs, completely new and want to try it?
Tasmay Shah start out with the first 4 Metallica albums then listen to gojira’s from mars to sirus and then go into their newer discography.
Listen to TPAB as well, dude. You may love that one too.

This was a 10.
Patrick Chole deadass, he really did not like the real hook. if it wasnt for that hook he wouldve givin this album a 10 for sure
Nah, 9 is right on the money.
Patrick Chole This was a 9, butterfly was a 9.5, damn is a 7
This has bangers, TPAB has the best flow for me from front to back, but Damn is without a doubt for me the favorite for casual listening. Each song in Damn can listened to independently and still fit well on a playlist with other songs.
The storytelling, flow, wordplay, rhyme schemes and production on this album make it a certified classic. Kendrick Lamar will go down alone of the greatest ever to grace the mic when all is said and done.
Best hip/hop album ever??? It's definitely not far from it
i can agree.
***** no man, swimming pools was the song of the decade you're right.
*cough cough* illmatic
its probably the best album of the year but not ever..
Not ever but in the last 11-12 years.
For me, this is a heavy 9 for me. Good story, progression, rapping, beats, how the album came together... I could listen to the whole album for hours on end, i've done it before.
Am I the only person who likes "Real"? Am I the only one that appreciates it despite the redundant hook? Does it not hit home to anyone but me???!!!!
Fleezy81 Nah, you're not the only one. I liked it. The production is great, the lyrics are quite poetic and the hook isn't vapid at all.
Fleezy81 nope, you're a unique special snowflake
Fleezy81That's one of my favorite songs by him. I think the hooks are weak from a purely sonic and melodic perspective but I also think that he is special in that he can pass off these raunchy hooks as tolerable and even mildly enjoyable.
Fleezy81 its one of my favourite songs
Absolutely not, I love that song
At the end, he should've said, "did you love it, did you love it a lot, why, and thats it. Goodthony kidtano, M.a.a.d City, forever".
The fact that this is arguable one if the greatest albums of all time, and it isn't even Kendrick's greatest album is just insane.
I find it funny that Real was actually one of the hooks I liked most actually.

The problem is He hasn't pit out any filler tracK's yet

I think honestly this would be my number 2 favourite album right under DSotM. It may even be Hip-Hop's answer to it since the themes of fear, money, losing ones mind, death all seem to be there. I think it took elements of everything that was on the radio at the time and totally made it work within context of his story telling which is one of the best things I ever heard. It's like an aural movie dude.
The voice fading away on Sing About Me.... I almost cried.
I heard this album when it first came out, and after all these years, I've finally decided to give it a 10/10. The best story ever told in hip-hop history.

Damn no wonder ppl like your reviews. This is very thorough. Taught me some stuff of the album I didn't even know. Wow thanks man

love this album to death. Everything about this album is almost perfect. The only thing i didnt like was that Poetic Justice sounded somewhat out of place. I've tried to listen to it many times but something puts me off about that track and only that track.
It's because drake is on it, making it worse
I really hate drake as much as the next guy, but there was something really off-putting about the song for me and i cant place a source for it and it didnt involve Drake. I actually think he did okay here.

Sing About Me, I’m Dying Of Thirst is 100% my favorite song of all time
Sing about me is insanely good! Just like the rest of this album. Transcends genre, and it will carry its spirit of time and place with it into the future. Kendrick is human in the first place and that's what makes it more mature than Ready to Die and Illmatic, not to gore anyone's ox, I love those albums just as much as the next person. Kendrick has a Dark side of the Moon in him. one love
I know this comment is old but I feel this way too. He somehow bridges ideologies from every aspect of music. He is a true student of the game.

Well his LP is coming out in two weeks, March 23. I really hope it flies by this album, what I mean by that is I hope he it doesn't sound anything like this, and has a more Section.80 and Overly Dedicated sound. I am so fucking over GKMC.
