Several years ago, Kendrick Lamar was hip hop's underdog. Today, he's dropping what's possibly the best rap album of the decade.

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right? What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?
Oh, so when Kendrick makes an album you give it a 10, but when Kendrick makes an album you give it a 7? Really shows your bias in artists
It’s actually a 6 he downgraded it
confused
@@raafay_s1027 I think he is saying he isn't bias
Kendrick is trash anyway he’s one of the most overrated rappers ever

@@jaquinrice7923 drake probably wrote that line down and thought he did something 🤣🤣 meanwhile aubrey has his ghostwriters LMAOOOOO
Wrote a dense narratively driven with interconnecting plot with multiple characters album called GKMC at the age of 12. Of course he can make TPAB at the age of 14.
I think this album is a masterpiece and it's crafted incredibly well, but it only works for me if I treat it like a book or movie. I gotta start from the beginning and go all the way through. For example, "u" literally feels like a scene out of a movie, so it's weird when it randomly comes on shuffle. There are only a couple of songs I can listen to on their own and really enjoy, but mostly it feels better as a whole. Does anyone else feel this way?
Same. Songs like Wesleys Theory and How Much a Dollar Cost I can listen to no problem, but songs like u and institutionalised I can only listen to when going through the whole album. And u is my favourite song on there, too.
Felt this way about GKMC .
I completely agree. I was excited about the album but I hadn't really enjoyed the singles ( I, Blacker The Berry) because I was listening to them out of context. I've been listening to the album endlessly for the past few days and its honestly one of the most satisfying experiences in music I have ever had. Each new listen I get that much closer to figuring out and deciphering the messages he places into the songs. I salute Kendrick for believing in his fans\listeners and not insulting their intelligence by giving us something to really analyze and sink our teeth into. Kendrick is a living legend, the kind of artist i'll be telling my children about when they ask who I loved and listened to as a young man.
***** love your content man
Oh hai! Its you hahah I agree the only ones I seem to able to listen to on their own are "u" "Alright" "complexion" and maybe "king kunta"
If the album was called "To Pimp A Butterfly" you would've given it a 10
If this album was called hoods hottest butterfly he would have given it an 8
If this album was by j cole he would give it a 6💀

When Kendrick won the Grammy for Best Rap Album he saluted Nas & Snoop and said, "We will live forever, believe that."
Considering the fact that this album is already being taught in some schools, and the impact it made, like the protesters chanting "Alright", I truly believe this album will live forever. It's just perfect.
I used this album in my English essay when discussing racism. So it will eventually be taught in school.
People always think the "classics" can never be touched and nothing can ever reach their level, but in twenty years this album will be looked at the same way Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt and other classics are imo
+Jay Iraj I think so too, in my opinion this is the great American hip hop album.
It is already being looked that way.
Well, this album is overrated as hell. No way in hell is it better than Dark Fantasy. And what impact did it make?? Except for the lyrics, the music in the album is a paint by number hip hop record.

When people say “why do you watch music reviews” I point them to this video. Your passion and attention to detail to the point of view of the artists is very admirable. I went through a slump where I didn’t appreciate music as much but as I watched the video on how you review music to see videos like this I started changing the way I listened. This definitely caused me to stop enjoying a lot of artists i use to because I stopped looking for catchy one liners and “hard” beats. But it made me appreciate not only real hip hop artists who put time and thought into their albums, but other genres I may not have cared for. Basically I wrote this to be another to acknowledge your impact on music and it’s listeners. In case you ever see this never stop being you!
I went through a slump as well for awhile. For years I thought I had heard all the music I would ever like until literally last year I found a whole new ecosystem of new great artists. Feels good to love music again

As a metalhead who rarely goes out of his way to listen to other stuff, I decided to finally give Kendrick Lamar a try. I listened to Section.80 and GKMC, and I’m upset that I’ve been missing out on this art. Kendrick has an amazing ability to write compelling and in depth stories in his lyrics and flows while not giving up awesome instrumentals and just overall catchy music. It’s artists like this that make me wanna venture off into more hip hop music. I’m onto TPAB and I’m so interested in how it’s supposed to top his previous 2, since I just cannot stop listening to them.
EDIT: TPAB is one of the best albums ever

Great review.

Anna Wise is sick!
Then DAMN. comes in :/
Honestly the most impressive thing about this album was that I actually understood the story it was telling. I always hear about other popular albums telling these intricate stories that you don't know exist wheras TPAB is so easy to understand.
Great comment. Kendrick doesn't try to sound like lupe or something and make his lyrics super complex. He makes it straightforward and they still hit hard cause it's different
That is one reason I love him so much. He codes his lyrics just enough to make it interesting to figure out, but not so much where it is overwhelming (Lupe, Aesop)
I like what this comment gets at but idk if that's exactly it. I don't think it's easy to understand per se, I think there's a certain amount of effort that has to be put in when listening. But once you put that effort in the story is so seamless and wholesome that it clicks perfectly

JerTheBear it’s not but the complexity of it makes it so fun and interesting to relisten too and trying to figure it out
This review is gonna go double platinum with no features
What about Cal Chuchesta?
but it does feature Cal
TPAB does have features.

Man, I take it you're probably kidding, but we all need to collectively stop paying so much attention to the numerical rating. The man spends 22 minutes meticulously explaining why the album is stupendous, but we're all hyped to see what score it gets so we can get into the same old tired conversations about "GOATs" and "top #5's" and "#1 in the game right now". I think we lose sight of the music because of all the hype that surrounds it. If I had to guess, Fantano probably feels the same way, but uses a scale because it's the norm among reputable critics and because it generates a lot of controversy... but at the end of the day, it's just a number that conveys little meaning in comparison to all the words that describe it.
this album was literally life changing for me

Same here. It made me embrace my roots more, it changed my taste in music, it got me through a breakup I was going through at the time. I'm very thankful for this album and Kendrick
This is Melon at his peak, showing his excitement & love for this album. How he dissects every song is pure greatness.
I just love "how much a dollar cost" . so powerful
It does have a beautiful meaning and instrumental! One of my favs on the album.
Anthony, you can’t give this album a 10 just because you want Kendrick to give you the n-word pass
lol
Underrated comment
mc ride will give him a pass for sure
He already got an n-word pass from mc ride bruh
I mean Anthony is black already so he already has the pass. If you watched this video, he called Kendrick the n word a plentiful amount of times
After 7 years of listening to this album I can fully say that this is indeed a Kendrick Lamar album
Out of the entire extensive catalog of albums in Kendrick Lamar's discography, TPAB is definitely one of them.
I may have to take your word for it, I've been thinking about this exact problem for years
looking back, this album has ruined hip hop for me. now whenever I hear an album, I'm looking for a message or something with some substance. when I don't get it, it's immediately written off as bad in my mind. haha. only a few albums at this point that I can listen to, and of course, this is one of them.
If you want more concious rap, you should try listening to joey badass
Now whenever I listen to an album it's like "well it ain't Kendrick".
I use him as a standard now which is good and bad. He's set a bar
(for whatever reason this thread inspired me, one sec)
I always considered myself a fan of hip-hop, but I don't think I really fully matured my tastes until I listened to this album. I was listening to a lot of white artists in general, but especially in hip-hop. The extent of my rap knowledge was Macklemore (who i enjoy some of), Watsky (babe), twenty one pilots, and Hollywood Undead (who I have completely grown out of). I then looked at my iPod, saw how whitewashed it was, and decided to try and expose myself to more music. I then found Anthony Fantano, and this review.
I decided to give this album a listen. It initially didn't sit too well with me instrumentally, and I just didn't get it. However, I didn't really feel like listening to anything else, so I legitimately just sat down and spent 10 hours grinding in Persona 3 FES and listening to TPAB on loop. It completely changed my taste in music. While you guys say that "I can't listen to mainstream hip-hop anymore cuz it ain't on Kendrick's level", I've actually found myself appreciating more mainstream hip hop. Kendrick led into J Cole, which led into Childish Gambino, then Chance the Rapper. I'm currently on a huge Run the Jewels stint, then probably Joey Badass and Earl Sweatshirt. All of this couldn't have ever occurred if I hadn't sat down and spent 10 hours straight trying to dissect To Pimp A Butterfly. I hadn't even heard good kid m.a.a.d city before I got into TPAB, and now I've gone through most of kendrick's catalogue, and have really expanded and matured my taste, thanks to Kendrick Lamar and this album.
So, thanks, Baldthony Fandango. For making me grow up a bit.

I feel you. I was fans of all of them, still am. It's just difficult to listen to albums nowadays after listening to this and gkmc because they feel so.. pointless. Recent albums like TLOP and Views were prime examples. I'm not mad at how my taste changed, but I am a little disappointed in some of the shit im hearing nowadays. Especially when I automatically try to look for some sort of theme or message. Don't get me wrong, both of those albums had some good songs, but as a whole they were just meh or worse.
yeah, my dude. But one of the great things about Theneedledrop over here (and ARTV, the other music critic I follow) is that it's an exposure to shit I never would have heard before. I wouldn't let Kendrick's sheer potency draw you from ALL mainstream hip hop, or even all conscious rap. I'd use it as a stepping stone into other artists that speak to you. But, then again, you probably already know this and I'm just preaching to the choir.
Keep on keepin' on, Chris. Have a spectacular day.
This might be Melon's most iconic review. You can see his passion with every word and he breaks down both the music and the message gracefully and effectively. He structures it well so it's easy to follow. He also gives a new perspective on the album as a whole and makes sure to persuade people to listen to it.

I don't think any album has ever made me feel the way that this did. The deep message along with the AWESOME basslines and jazz elements makes me feel so great. I would give it an 11/10, but that's over the limit, so 10/10 is perfect. Kendrick Lamar got me into hip hop and it is still my favorite hip hop album, possibly album in general.

Have you been listening to him? He actually likes the album.
i keep coming back to this review, it's so rare to see melon so passionate about a record, his joy is incredibly infectious.
the comments on this video are hilarious, too.
for real, melon did a great job of selling this album. I wasn't all about it the first listen through, but after i watched melon's review and how he raved about every single song and when he said you really need to listen to what kendrick is saying. It was all very true, and glad i gave this album another chance, now it's probably tied for my favorite of all time along with gkmc.
This is in my opinion the best album I've ever heard. I was so deeply moved by this album, and Kendrick does a fantastic job in the song "u".
u is my least favourite song on this album and honestly the only skip for me and i dont understand why ppl love it so much, could you explain what you love abt it?
@@FakeAdirTV I can't tell but it seems like they're really moved by it and like how it sounds
@@FakeAdirTVthere is the point of how certain songs resonate with people and their subjective tastes, but there is also something to be said about it in context of listening to each track on the album in order. The track overall goes really hard. I don’t care too much for the beat switch, but the song is very lyrically sound nonetheless. You could make the case that there isn’t a skippable song on the album with its catchy hooks, beats, lyrics, etc. Personally I wouldn’t make that case, but you certainly could.
@@FakeAdirTVit's so catchy but also moving
@@FakeAdirTVI love u because it has a really catchy chorus at the start which also has a deep melancholy meaning to it which just feels so good with the tone just going down and then the voice crack Kendrick is just really nice

Dark Side Of The Moon?
This is just one of those albums that needs to be digested. I think the word needed to describe it is "challenging". It challenges us to think critically about society in general, challenges us to interpret/analyze lyrics rather than have opinions fed to us on a platter, and challenges the music industry in general. He's doing many things that current artists are failing to do: He's using his mainstream fame to touch on critical issues and is making his audience step back and listen to music inspired by previous legends, which don't have to be played in the clubs 24/7. This is true "brain food" music. Kendrick has continuously proved himself to be a lyrical and musical genius and I will continue to support him. Can't wait to get a hard copy.
^truth
That's one of this albums biggest problems, most people right now don't like being confronted with their problems and just sit around not expressing what they really feel or think and then someone like Kendrick comes along and grabs them by the collar and slaps them with the hard and dark reality that is life and they hate it. People just want hype music to club to or get hype in the car to and that's cool and all but it's about time we had a real voice in the mainstream for the people that speaks on real problems, this album has been a long time coming and I'm glad it's finally here.

I'm a trained jazz musician and have always loved jazz music. I guess that's why I connected so well with this album. A lot of my friends at first were like, "what? you like that album? that shit was so boring. I didn't get it at all" and of course thats their opinion so I can't change how they feel. You definitely have to to have a certain musical appreciation to enjoy an album like this. The average trap music listener or hip hop listener is gonna overlook this album because they don't understand REAL INSTRUMENTATION, they only know 808s and snappy snares. Which is fine, I love trap music but kendrick is beyond hip hop.
Andres Esqueda there was no 808s on this album
I know
Gary Umm... Have you all completely forgotten about Alright?
***** its all live bass
Gary Pretty sure it's 808 sub-bass. And an 808 kick, and an 808 snare, and an 808 clap, and an 808 open hi hat. Unless that beat breakdown video flat out lied to me

I agree with your point, and I also think this album is fantastic. Fuck it though, people should question Fantano on Hip-hop because MUSIC IS SUBJECTIVE
My beautiful dark twisted fantasy...
Why? He's full of shit.
He doesn't have an understanding of art / Music. KENDRICK'S ALBUM IS FAR FROM PERFECT - which a 10 is a perfect. Bullshit.
Anthony is beyond sucking him off. Kendrick is a music artist, Yes the lyrics, meaning & flow or whatever are very good... The music is NO WHERE NEAR A 10.
If i chose a career of reviewing music, i would not give Kid Cudi's MoTM album a 10 just because it's my favourite - because i know that it's not perfect, no where near. The same is for Kendrick's album.
OVERRATED TO SHIT JUST BECAUSE IT'S KENDRICK. you cunts are in denial.

***** No. There is not one song that has music that is Interesting, catchy or even enjoyable. What do you mean you are "laughing at me calling him a music artist" ?? He is a music artist, is he not? wtf you on.
My point stands. You are clearly offended as you probably think Kendrick's album is a 10. Maybe it's only me that gets a headache from the music... but my point still stands.
No joke, this album is the equivalent of sitting down and getting wrapped up in a good book. Like the storytelling and narrative is just SO damn good and it finishes with such on a fulfilling note. If this album isn't on a shitton of Album of the Decade lists, society will just prove how tone deaf they are.
Say what you want about Fantano, you could tell by this review that he truly is passionate about music. The true bliss on his face is all over this video, while I disagree with some of his review, I will say that he is real, and he does really care about music.

+kobron1559 I've always loved Kanye for his production, mostly. He's not _that_ great of a rapper (let's be honest, a huge portion of the lyrics on _Yeezus_ in particular are just horribly written), but he is hands down one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time. And that's really enough for me to make him one of my favorite artists in the genre.
