Being free of cancer is something to celebrate. I am happy and now I have a sister to support through her experience. We are optimistic people and body image has it's place. Love each other through it.
I am doing research on the new SKIMS bra, and came upon your video. Thank you for helping other women with your courage and frankness. I am always shocked that physicians in this day and age will not take the time to educate and show kindness to their patients. I hope you gave them an appropriate review on health grades.
None of the terminology around flat closure existed when I had risk reducing mastectomies age 29, I just naively assumed I would be flat after my would-be assassins were gone, and I was more than ok with that. On the morning of my surgery the surgeon told me she was putting in implants, and when I said I didn't want that she said I could either sign the consent form for the implants or she would cancel my surgery. I'd watched it rip through my family, 7 affected relatives so I had no choice but to accept the implants. I was able to get them removed some years later but my closure could have been a lot better had i been listened to.
That is so wrong. I am so so sorry. I hope that you can keep telling your story in venues where change is being sought. My friend Kim at NotPuttingonaShirt.org would be interested in hearing your testimony! She’s the main person to talk to if you want to tell your story for change.
I had an aesthetic flat closure. And I did not see any pictures ahead of time which to this day annoys me (mastectomy 1-29-24). It is a pretty ok thing at this point. I never saw a picture of any mastectomy let alone one like mine. I do not understand the lack of photos of previous surgeries. This far out I am very satisfied with the effect of my mastectomy. Thankfully there was no chemo or radiation but I am now on this hormone blocker.
