In this video we take a look at every generation of M3 from the E30 to the F80 and every S4 from the C4 to the B9. whether you like the sound of B5 S4 turbos or E36 ITBs, we will break down the best of these cars.

Depending on the Gen, the RS4, not the s4, is the M3's rival.
They no longer are rivals because the BMW doesn't have a wagon form and the RS4 only comes in a wagon form

The first S4 was an A6 anyway. It was based off the Audi 100 which got a face lift and was re-badged to the A6 halfway through the 90s when Audi changed up the model names. The legacy segment should have started with the Audi S2, which was based off of the Audi 80 that went on to become the A4.

Bmw has always been reliable for me. My 2010 5 series hasn’t given me a single problem. Just regular maintenance as usual for the past 8 years

Just bought a B5 S4, and currently replacing the timing belt. Havent driven it, but it puts a smile on my face everytime i look at it.
Which engine? I just bought an automatic 2.8 and it leaks. I drove it 1 block, then poop.🤦🏽♂️
@@joseph_the_human Your 2.8 V6 is an A4 B5. The S4 B5 only comes with 1 engine. The 2.7L Biturbo V6.

Yeah, but we don’t have the RS4 in the states, except for one generation, whereas the S4 and M3 have both been sold in the states for like 40 years, so it’s a more apt comparison. no one in the states is shopping a ‘99 M3 against a ‘99 RS4, because (I think) the only RS4’s we got here were the B6/B7 generations (which have the same power plant).

Well this is subjective because I live in Canada where it's snowy for at least half the year and that's one reason why I wanted a rear wheel drive car. I love to drift and in winter you don't ruin your tires LOL. I just switch to my winter tires and no problem.

I bought my first Audi in 2001, a 2002 B5 manual S4. 18 years later, I still have that car, albeit with almost 3 times the horsepower pushing out of the stock block and heads while the car looks almost bone stock but for the rims and the 8 piston calipers in the front and 4 piston calipers in the rear. The sound of the exhaust and 3 foot fire that shoots out the exhaust tips also can give away that its no “OEM” Audi. Since that first Audi purchase, I have only ever bought the Quattro GMBH cars from Audi. Audi all the way!

Indeed. BTW did you know that current S4 is offered only with the diesel engine in Europe due to strict emissions regulations? Some people hate but on the other hand, low end torque peak is quite pleasant to feel when accelerating.

Firstofall this guy compares S4 Audi 100(today A6 class) to E30, really..., You have to know that S4(C4) has nothing to do with the B5 S4 - Audi S4. And the predcessor of the B5 S4(A4) was the B4 model, Audi 80, with S2 and RS2 models, as most powerfull.
I've always loved the M3. In particular, the E30 and E36.

M3 should be compaired with RS models. S line should be compared with bmw m sport package cars.
dee. M back in the early 2000s the S line had very similar numbers to the M cars. Also we never really get any RS cars in the US until recently we’ve been getting a few. Last time we got the RS4 was in 2008, we didn’t get the RS3 until 2017, and I’m pretty sure Audi discontinued sending the RS5 to the states this year

@@e7234 I think the S Versions competed against the secondary-tier M Cars: M140i, M340i, M235i, M550i M760Li, etc. Then the S-Line cars compared with M-Sport.
dee. M a S4 is not s-line. Also you can compare the most S4 generations with the m3 but not all of them. The First S4 c4 with is inline 4 was actually a Audi 100 what later became the Audi A6 / S6. Many Audi RS cars just have no BMW rivals. There were no generations of M3 Wagons but S4 and RS4 Wagons.
I’ll take an Audi over BMW any day. I’m a Quattro guy.

I'm more of a bimmer man but I'd love a b5 s4 or an old diesel Merc! All great cars at the end of the day though!
I've owned Audi's for the past 20 years including twin turbo S4 and RS4. I've driven M3's and stock for stock the M3 is a better car. The Audi's are easier to modify for power and living in the mountains I like the AWD for year round performance. M3 is a good 2nd car if you already have a daily driver or a truck. The Audi can be your year round daily driver.
Also E30 M3's are 6 figure cars now. 1st Gen S4's are $5000 cars. Not many of us can afford to buy an E30 as a toy but S4's are still affordable.

14:18 States that the B8 S4 has “rocket cover leaks,” “bad POV valves” and “carbon buildup” while showing various images of b6 and b7 s4s. Lmao the B8 doesn’t have any of those issues.
actually the B8's had 2 of those issues, as well as breathers made of plastic that house coolant passages down in the valley between the heads and under the supercharger. They leak and fill the crankcase up with coolant and if not noticed (which is easy to do because they dont have actual physical dip sticks, only the sensor in the pan) they will essentially reverse hydrolock. The metal cam covers are chemically sealed and a whole shitload of em had leaks at

yeah I was thinking the same thing, however the S4 was a competitor up until the E9X M3. Prior to that, the B5 was on par with the E36 and the B6 with the v8 was on par with the E46. After BMW went with the v8, the RS variant became the better competitor.

i have a B5 A4 with the entire driveline from an S4. gt2871r garrett turbo with 550cc injectors making around 375 wheel. it’s a fun little car. i’d like the extra displacement of a v6, and i’d like a second turbo too for that matter. but i know JP would agree that the 1.8t engine is stellar

You guys certainly run a lot of B roll of Audi 100's (old A6's) while it's about the Audi S4. Even the red/blue split screen has an Audi 100 on it... Also, the C4 is an Audi 100...

Yes, but the S version was called the S4. With the facelift Audi changed the name to A6 and after that the S version was called the S6. So he is right, even it is a much bigger and heavier car.
The first A6 was also built on the C4 platform. Sad to only have it in this vid because they messed up. I was looking forward to some cool S2 footage.

This was an awesome episode. I myself owned a stage 3 B5 S4. Fun to drive but like typical German sports cars. Not very reliable.
I too have a stage 3 b5 s4. The tow truck driver knows us personally and knows where to take it now.

Just looking at videos of B5 S4s. I have a 08 Audi A6 on bags that I just cruise in. A 96 b5 a4 which is stock/slow and loud with a straight pipe exhaust that people think is fast because of its sound. And finally I have an b5 s4 Shell I just bought a 2.7t motor for it and a rebuilt JHM 6 speed transmission. Next I’m buying all the maintenance parts water pump timing belt all new gaskets and mounts and upgrading the fuel injectors fuel pump and running and going to be running RS6 turbos. Know how unreliable b5 s4 the goal is to daily the a4 cruise and take to shows the a6 and run the shit out of the s4 here and there on weeks because it will break down eventually lol

Umm got a couple facts wrong... US spec e36 M3 didn’t come till 95 model year,not 92 infact we almost didn’t even get it but thanks to pissed of enthusiasts we got a half ass version and only advertised as 240hp,not 270 or even 315... those were Euro models only.
E46 M3 had 333hp not 338.US spec e30 M3 only came with the 4 cylinder while Europe got a few better models like the eco models.
And overall the S models have been competing with 335i/340i for over a decade now,they are in the same price range. Just overall this video needs to be remade or scrapped... when the dude said he never liked German cars at the end then it all made sense... plus he drives a Toyota... that’s all fine but atleast do a little research.
