growing up both my uncles were listed top 200 in the united states as nuclear welders. they lived in eastern washington state on the columboa river near hanford nuclear facility. they spent years building the trans alaska pipeline. when the hydros would come to the columbia river for the gold cup they were always invited into the pits to perform high quality welds on alot of the parts that would break during the races. i was able to watch all the hydros ie paynpak, squire shop, atlas van lines, cirus circus, miss budweiser so yes i got to meet all the drivers.. people dont know the paynpak was the 1st hydro using the turbine engine and i witnessed it flipping coming out of turn 4 right in front of me, i said its going to flip its going so fast....... sadly sponsorships for those races have almost stopped and the races are not what they used to be, kiro 7 out of seattle no longer televises the races and its pretty much an in person sport anymore.. i tried to attend a race a cpl of years ago but no parking, high costs and the thousands upon thousands of spectaors makes it it so uncomfortable to attend i just stay home and watch highlights on youtube...... thank you for posting this hobby as it brings back so many positive childhood memories. the 70s and 80s were great years!
