Beautiful. I hate to say this but genetics plays a big part. Not to discourage anyone but they need to have realistic expectations. This lady's hair grew so much even though she added so much heat. She has very strong hair naturally.

You're right but hair grows. Hair can't be the difference from shoulder length to tailbone but it can be from waist to tailbone

+Meesha Edwards Maybe try getting a trim. Sometimes a plateau in length retention may be signs you need a trim, because the ends are breaking of as fast/faster than the hair is growing in. Also, try washing your hair a little bit more often (ex. if you wash your hair biweekly, try washing your hair weekly instead) as hydrating (i.e. completely saturating the hair with water [different than daily moisturization]), is really important. Also, try wearing your hair in styles that keep your ends off your shoulders/cloths to reduce friction. And try sleeping on satin/silk like materials. Also, don' skip conditions and deep conditions. I hope this help. Good luck.

Thank you, Melissa Denise for sharing your transition from Relaxed to Natural. My daughter and I are going through the very same thing, because we are sick and tired of how our hair has been reacting from being relaxed. Our hair is most definitely MORE healthier when there are not relaxers placed upon our hair (not saying that relaxed hair can't be healthy), but we just wanted to do things a little DIFFERENTLY!!!! I've even tried purchasing hair vitamins that once we've stopped taking them, our hair broke off tremendously!!! But with DEEP CONDITIONING, changing SOME of our diet (I'm not going to lie and say "all of it"..) among other things will hopefully help! I appreciate you sharing this adventure with us. Be blessed, and may EVERYTHING you touch FLOURISH ABUNDANTLY!!!!

so jealous. i went transitioning for one year, and my hair grew about 7 inches. The curls were so pretty but my hair did not love me back. it was always tangled no matter what i did.
i combed my hair ONLY when wet/with conditioner,
    i used wide tooth combs,
    i used NO heat,
i had an expensive deep conditioner made specifically for my hair type that i left in my hair for 30min to an hour,
    i did co-washes
i used every kind of oil including coconut
even after i found the perfect sulfate free shampoo that made my tangles go away, it STILL ended up tangled the next day. plus i didn't appreciate the fact that i spent HOURS just washing my hair. i couldn't take it anymore so i relaxed my hair....now i regret it. today i could have had 100% natural hair...
but i'm gonna start over again! i just hope my hair can love me back...

    • @MelissaDenise

Well now every 3 to 4 months. When I was transitioning I did it about once a month but I havent done that in years. And yes I would go swimming often in the summers!

I am impressed!!! I have been waiting to find a You-tuber who achieved natural long hair without doing the big chop and while still using heat! I've been natural for going on three years and I didn't want to big chop. So thanks for this. It gives me hope!

I'm glad you made this video. A lot of black women think their hair can't grow, but it does! I, just like you, had to realize heat was killing my hair!! So as soon as I stopped applying so much heat(Last time I applied heat was 8 months ago) my hair began to grow like a weed! 8 months ago my hair was just a little past my neck, now its past my shoulders! I'm now going to invest in hair scissors. Never going back to a salon to get my hair done-they always mess up our hair!

THERES HOPE FOR MY HAIR TO GROW LONGER!! For years (as long as I can remember) my mom always forced me to straighten my hair because she hated the look of natural curls, inevitably my hair stayed short and damaged. Almost six months ago I ended up moving in with my dad and completely stopped using my straighter or any form of heat on my hair. Although my hair is insanely healthier now it's still not growing at the rate I want it too, but now I know I just have to be a little more patient. OH! I want to know how often you wash your hair when it's natural because for me if I want to wear my hair down I have to wet it first before I can do anything to try and tame it.

    • @MelissaDenise
      @MelissaDenise  9 ปีที่แล้ว

Tori Santiago YAY too less heat!!! But I probably wash it once a month and cowash about twice a month (all depends on how dirty is/what i'm doing that week) -- but yes if i dont have a style thats going to last me the week than I too have to wet it...how about trying to put water in a spray bottle so maybe you wont have to wash your whole head. Thats worked pretty well for me!!! Hope that helps!!! Good luck with everything!! xoxo

You look so beautiful with that fishtail braid (and in general). I've been natural for about five years now and my hair is just about mid back length. I was beginning to get afraid it had stopped growing but your video showed me that I just need to take care of my hair and it will do what it does -- grow. Thanks for taking your time and making this, it's quite wonderful!

I cut 4 inches off this past summer and I am ready to cut the rest of the relaxed hair off. The great thing is that I'll still be able to put my hair in a pony tail. I just hope my hair grows as healthy and long as yours!

Love this. Thanks for sharing. I am also on a natural hair journey. I haven't had a relaxer in almost 8 years. I'm tender headed so it is hard for me to do my natural hair and I have been wearing weaves just because I don't know how to handle it. My hair is half way down my back, at least 16 inches so I am researching on how I can start wearing my natural hair without too much hassle. I do have a professional Corporate job where I am literally the only 1 of 3 black women in this high a position so I can't be looking all crazy at work. I love wearing the weaves because it's easy, I always have perfect hair and don't have to worry about it but it is getting expensive and a waste because my natural hair is just as long as my weaved hair. Your video is giving me hope that I, too, can find the way to better care for my natural hair. My beautician who keeps telling me I should wear my natural hair and shouldn't have all this hair under a weave said she'll work with me. I'm glad that she's a natural hairstylist as well and wears her own hair naturally. We shall see. The hair journey continues.

LOL yeah I always say that now! In July of 2013 I finally chose to go natural. To start "fresh" I got the pixie cut as short as Rihanna's. I was in love with the short cut so I got the sides trimmed a few times, but decided to just let my hair grow. I'm curious to see how long I can get it. My short sides are down to the bottom of my ear now it grows so fast (not that i'm complaining. :) ). I have a friend of mine do my hair since he's an expert on how to care for natural hair and I'm loving the results. Black women should know that we can have long hair, too, if we take care of it! Find products and techniques that are good for YOU, keep up with it, and most of all be patient. Your hair is beautiful. :)

Omg just gorgeous hair! I had to do the big chop, because my flat iron, whom I thought was my best friend, back stabbed me. Lol Thought I'll never see my curls again, glad I did the chop. My curls are back, and this video is my inspiration that I'll achieve my goal of getting waist length hair. I was almost there until this unfortunately happened.

You have a flawless head of hair, I can't even imagine why you would be afraid to show those lovely curls. But I am glad you did eventually because it is a crime to have hair like that and not show it off lol. You are an inspiration I cannot wait to be fully natural (1 year 6 months post). Thanks for sharing ;D

LOL yeah I kinda did everything a little backwards! I give props to ppl that do do the big chop but I always knew that it wasnt for me so I just kinda found my own way! Granted some might not think of it as the best option, but it worked for me. Best of luck to you!! xo

This made me even more hopeful about my hair. I've started my transition in March and it's already beginning to be tough because im also going without flat ironing and only blow drying when im in a rush. I have no idea how to style my hair other than pulling it back into a bun. Anyway, thanks for this truly inspiring video!

Keep going strong girl!! I would say try doing braid and twist outs!! Those are both easy and come out looking great!!! You can even do flexi rods on your blown out hair as well! Thanks for stopping by my ch and showing love!! xoxo
