I saw him open for REO Speedwagon and Aerosmith when I was 15, in 1977, at the Greensboro Coliseum in NC. No one there had even heard of him, and he blew everybody away. Especially Aerosmith. They were so drunk and sloppy that they sucked really bad. I’ve seen him 9 times since then, including once w/ Damn Yankees. That 1st show actually made me want to learn how to play guitar. Since then I have done just that, and continue to do so. Long live Ted Nugent
A couple of years after that I saw him at the Baltimore Civic Center. Opening act: Van Halen. I was deaf for a week. Van Halen blew things out, but, you know no one outrocks (or volumes) uncle Ted.

My Aerosmith experience from the 70s was about the same. They headlined with Derringer opening and Derringer blew them away; they even played longer than Aerosmith did. Saw Ted headlining with AC/DC opening back then at the same venue, the old Civic Arena in Pittsburgh
1977 - my mother dropped me and two friends off at the Metrochurch for a cookout. We waved goodbye and when she vanished from sight we ran across the street, got into my friend's brother's car and went off to see Uncle Ted live for the first time. He's never failed to deliver. "Just What the Doctor Ordered" is my favorite.
Gotta admit, the man has, and has always had his shit together. I saw him around 1980 for the first time, and I wasnt even a fan, my buddy got me a ticket to "show me what I was missing". My bud was right, Nugent put on a full throttle show, and I left the arena with a newfound respect for the man.

The cover was only 2 bucks, he blew me away and during the breaK i went and got two friends in Angleton and drove back to Houston and paid the cover for their birthdays, we had a blast and he was awesome, I'm 67 now and still remember that show vividly and am lucky to have experienced the Ted of the younger days!

I am from Europe, the Netherlands. In 2000 I was 2 weeks in Denver for a training. One evening I was driving from Boulder back to my hotel in Denver. It was a beautiful night with a a red sunset sky. The car radio was on a local rock station. Then they played a song with kind of a haunting sound. Some magic was going on. But I didn't know the song and neither the artist. Back in my hotel room I took the phonebook and called up the radio station, asking them what song they played at that moment. I talked to the DJ himself, who told me it was Stranglehold by Ted Nugent. Next day I bought the record.
That bass line, to play it like that over and over while Nugent solos. Wow. As a former cover bass player myself, its hard to just play that without making a mistake for that long. I love Derek too. He has a great voice and plays perfectly live. Nugent should not have gotten rid of him back then.
In that time the grunts chose your song to go into battle with and i can see why. Being a grunt was way harder than any civilian could imagine. I was in the Nam in 70. If we could have had that hammer down song back then, i'm sure we could have brought the WRATH down on the VC.
Growing up in the 70s and 80s the Nuge was the top of the heap of rock guitar players in my opinion. His sound was unmistakable and it was mandatory that it be played at full volume. He is in my top five with Eddie Van Halen, Hendrix and SRV. The Motor City Mad Man cranked out some of the best riffs of all time.
Grew up in San Antone and when I heard that first Epic album I couldn't get enough. I listened to it over and over and I knew what it meant immediately. That raw power and gusto affected me in a way I could never explain. Thank you Ted!!
I was 17 when I saw him open for Aerosmith in Giants Stadium (New Jersey) in 1978. Aerosmith was drugged up and sloppy, Nugent was right on the money with his playing. My 15 year old girlfriend and her friends said that Nugent was much better and blew Aerosmith out of the water. Stranglehold was the best song too. He played it note for note and the bass player played it perfectly too. Nugent made sure to give it his all during the entire time that he was up there on the stage. Nugent is a first class act in my book.
I was heartbroken. Because I was learning how to play their songs. While I loved Nugent, and any other hard rocker of that time period, it was Aerosmith that got me motivated to play the guitar. I tell you this, if I had found out that they had studio musicians play on Train Kept a Rolling (to which they got caught for years later), I might have need to talk to a shrink or something.
Great musician, and one the best minds out there. Met Mr. Nugent once when I was 16 at Mr. Rissmiller’s house in Encino. One of the highlights of my life.

It ain't braggin if it's true. His concerts were most awesome. I saw his band in '77 and '79. The one in 1977 was at Soldier Field in Chicago and he came on after Lynyrd Skynyrd. He was knee deep in plastic water jugs. I also saw his Amboy Dukes band at my high school auditorium in '73 or '74 for 2 bucks a ticket. He really is legendary.
I was at the Soldier Field show too. He was almost waist deep in the jugs. I'll never forget the milk jugs looked like a waterfall in reverse heading towards the stage. Thousands and thousands of them. The whole stadium looked like a giant popcorn popper. Best show ever.

He did it well. I was there with four carloads of friends and i remember this chick that was with us got hit in the head with a watermelon. Somebody threw it from up above her several rows up. Well, this dude that was with her went up there and found out who threw it and knocked that fucker out cold. It was awesome. Good times.
Ted I'm retired SEAL and in first landing state park in Virginia Beach I would use Stranglehold as an anthem. I would go the last 1.5 miles with Stranglehold. I did that 20 plus years then one day took a wrong turn while running to SH and tore my ACL. it kept me young and Yes Spec ops, Marines all those types live for it. Ted Thankyou.

I had to watch this because I have a DVD where he plays Stranglehold and it's amazing. I was thinking first time I watched it, man, this guy is not afraid to really show what he has inside. I know exactly what he means when he says, "I am the licks."
I was getting into this & he went onto Cat scratch then skipped right on up to Current stuff. What about Double Live Gonza. One of THE greatest live Guitar drivin albums of all time. If you take how clean Teds tone was & how intensely he played & compared it to any other guitarists of that era. As far as straight out lead guutar playing goes, Ted was clearly one of the best, if not The best in those days.
Saw him in the 70’s do Stranglehold I was more blown away by Derek St Holmes on vocals then I was by Ted Nugents guitar playing. Ted ego would never let the man who actually sang the songs get any of the attention and very little credit
Firstly, love, love, Nugent's music. :) Nugent's comments aside... My interpretation of "Stranglehold" on its face, is that it is a tremendously complex and forceful 'romantic' Ballad that captures. My rough interpretations of this 'Ballad' if you care to entertain it, are below: Plot: 3 - parts. Intro. lyrics. The Solo. Final lyrics. The intro. lyrics [from a very male stereotype/perspective] establish a couple who have just recently experienced a bad break-up. Evidently, so bad, his "Baby" ran away. The male character admits that she "put him in [his] place." In a passion, "tearing up the street," the male char. has "come again" to her door? "Like a dog in heat." He's reminding her how "smokin" their relationship was and he wants/expects her to stay by-his-side because he is a force to be reckoned with; he's going places, nothing is gonna get in his way -- "You better trust your fate." He is her fate. The solo: (I think) it is a melodic representation of the 'future' he sees for both of them--with all the "highs" and "lows" (i.e. a guitar solo as a metaphor for Life and relationship). He's still standing outside the door, telling her his vision of a future with no barriers, not even death, and she's along for the 'ride' as far as he's concerned. Final lyrics: Repeating reminders of how they are 'entwined' by passion. Perhaps he is getting desperate, bitter? She's not opening the door? He reminds her that he knows he has a stranglehold on her heart, her passion--he knew when they first passionately embraced in a 'crushing' kiss. I can see the guy walking away, absolutely "sure" that their relationship isn't over. So the song represents a moment in time between two people who are at the very least--passionate. I believe "Strangehold" masterfully delivers an honest, and complex 'story' of love and angst as told (right or wrong) through the Male perspective of the time.
Ted is the epitome of hard rock...so many great songs delivered in a vessel so confident and in your face...a perfect picture of the alpha dog in full domination mode. Had there been an internet in those days, the Motor City Madman wouldn't have broken it...he would have obliterated it. Ted is the man.
Ted Nugent should be in the Rock Hall of Fame! And he should be considered one of the greatest rock guitar players of all time. Ted holding that guitar is a possessed beast! He's an assassin with that instrument. Separate the political from the musical.
Glad I got to meet Ted once in an Abilene, Texas music store. You and Chris Duarte. I was browsing some guitars with my son when this guy, later I found out, Chris came in, sat down near my son and I, picked up a Strat and we were both in awe watching that cat cut loose. Then Uncle Ted walked into the store. I went from watching a blues master at play to thinking I was transported to rock Meca. Ted was gracious and signed my T-shirt. I was broke back then, in the military, otherwise, I would have purchased a guitar on the spot and asked him to sign that instead.
Ted is absolutely respected by a majority of active US military, veterans, and patriots. The commercial music industry is absolutely liberal, disrespectful, and ‘tone deaf.’

Hollywood makes out that the 1960s were America's best time for financial and political reasons but as a man born in 1945 and a teen in the 60s I can say without doubt the 1970s was America's best era for music , non lethal drugs , concerts and festivals and most of all women , I had so much fun in the 70s the past 4 decades combined cannot equal the fun I had starting in 1971 after being discharged from the Marine corps.
Derek St Holmes an unbelievable singer. Ted never liked Derek getting the accolades and the spotlight. EGO brought about the end of the Ted Nugent Band.
LOL - According to Derek in an interview about 5 years ago, it was his (Derek) use of drugs and booze that caused Nugent to fire him. I really love how people make Derek out to have been the real star of that band and yet he did nothing in the music industry to speak of unless he was with Nugent. Derek was very open and honest in that interview and said flat out that Ted did not use drugs and made it clear to all members that if they did use and it began to show up onstage or in the studio and be a problem, they would be fired. The drugs and booze did start becoming a problem and true to his word Nugent fired them all.
Double Gonzo live on vinyl will always be one of the greatest live albums of all time. A local bar I used to play pool in had Stranglehold on the jukebox. I would always play it, long ass killer song that gave you your money’s worth. If I ever won the lottery a vintage Gibson Byrdland like Ted’s would be on my wish list. Years ago I saw one of his on the wall at the Hard Rock Cafe in Detroit...I was seriously thinking about "borrowing” it lol
I would kinda agree with Uncle Ted at a lot of levels, one for sure is clean living and focus makes you successful with hard work and dedication. You don't have to be played to be a player in any industry, mark your own path and follow it until YOU are done with it, and then move quickly on or stay. But you do it on your own terms.
Ted i have been a fan every sense amboy dukes. been to 8 concerts in the 80's and 90's! i have everyone your albums , and casset's , and CD's. you have ever made! the king off rock for me baddest guitar player that ever lived in my book. keep up the great work. you a madman! and i love it!
Whatever one might think about his politics, I respect the fact that he stayed away from drugs. I can also relate to what he says when talking about not realizing that the Amboy Dukes song was about getting high. When you don't use drugs, you don't think that way, as I can attest to myself. But unlike Ted, I also grew up around drug abusers and dealers. Which taught me few things about how they think, and are. These people can be unscrupulous, and dangerous when cornered. I'm just glad I chose not to use drugs myself. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't be here today...
20 year Navy vet. Never had the opportunity to play Strangle Hold before battle. But I watched the first launch fighter jets in Desert Storm from the USS Saratoga-CV-60. We only thought of our pilots coming home. But our pilots were tenacious. A little know fact. During a planning session under the FLEET ADMIRAL, our pilots were criticized for losing plans and pilots. But our pilots did so much damage. Dropping bombs down the smoke stacks of power plants, I've seen footage of a pilot blowing the control tower of a dam. The Admiral knew of the success of our pilots and shut the meeting down saying "The Saratoga pilots are engaging the enemy and inflicting damage far more than the rest of your And you claim they aren't doing their job." The room got quiet.
Even though Ted get's almost no credit, Stranglehold is one of the most iconic, amazing rock songs in history.The mix, the guitar, the vocals. It never gets old for me. I rate it top 5 along with Detroit Rock City. 40 plus years later It's still one of my favorites ever.
The first show I was supposed to see with Ted was him opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd . But Artimus Pyle broke his arm in a bar fight and they canceled the show . A year or so later and they had their horrific plane crash ...... and I'm still sick about missing that show . I went on to see Ted 5 times . The first after Free - For - All came out . Then after Weekend Warriors came out ( Nearly blew the roof off that place ) . I also saw his NUGENT tour with the return of Derrick St. Holmes , an INCREDIBLE SHOW ! We saw him at the Texxas Jam and also for his Intensities in Ten Cities album . I still have the shirts for the NUGENT tour ( camo sleeves ) , The Texxas Jam and the Intencitiea in Ten Cities tour ... GREAT FUN ! ..... Thanks Ted ! The 1st time I went to see Ted Nugent a small airplane crashed in the venue the day before he was set to play! ~ I got to see him play a few years later with Lynyrd Skynyrd at Anaheim Stadium just a month before they perished in an airplane crash. Ted came out on stage atop a giant speaker and did a forward flip off it while playing his Gibson!

Stranglehold really is a strong song. It mixes rock, funk, soul, Motown, heavy metal,... it's just super powerful and very American.

I was 17 when I saw him open for Aerosmith in Giants Stadium (New Jersey) in 1978. Aerosmith was drugged up and sloppy, Nugent was right on the money with his playing. My 15 year old girlfriend and her friends said that Nugent was much better and blew Aerosmith out of the water. Stranglehold was the best song too. He played it note for note and the bass player played it perfectly too. Nugent made sure to give it his all during the entire time that he was up there on the stage. Nugent is a first class act in my book.
I witnessed the same drunkedness in Dallas with Aerosmith.....walked out.....never went to see them again.
I was heartbroken. Because I was learning how to play their songs. While I loved Nugent, and any other hard rocker of that time period, it was Aerosmith that got me motivated to play the guitar. I tell you this, if I had found out that they had studio musicians play on Train Kept a Rolling (to which they got caught for years later), I might have need to talk to a shrink or something.

Great musician, and one the best minds out there. Met Mr. Nugent once when I was 16 at Mr. Rissmiller’s house in Encino. One of the highlights of my life.
He rocks his shows rocked his work ethic to his audience always rocked always will ! He's never needed confirmation and has more than earned respect !

@@jameswhite9025 Very familiar with Dubois; used to be there on business a lot, from Punxsy to Bradford. From Johnstown myself and dove to Pittsburgh for many shows back then. They actually had decent concerts in Johnstown on a regular basis back then; saw a lot of shows at the War Memorial arena.

It ain't braggin if it's true. His concerts were most awesome. I saw his band in '77 and '79. The one in 1977 was at Soldier Field in Chicago and he came on after Lynyrd Skynyrd. He was knee deep in plastic water jugs. I also saw his Amboy Dukes band at my high school auditorium in '73 or '74 for 2 bucks a ticket. He really is legendary.
I was at the Soldier Field show too. He was almost waist deep in the jugs. I'll never forget the milk jugs looked like a waterfall in reverse heading towards the stage. Thousands and thousands of them. The whole stadium looked like a giant popcorn popper. Best show ever.
Yes, popcorn popping. It was awesome. I remember it was really hot out. It was fucking loud ass, like a record amount of wattage on those towers of amps and pa system. He was the shit at that time. He did it well. I was there with four carloads of friends and i remember this chick that was with us got hit in the head with a watermelon. Somebody threw it from up above her several rows up. Well, this dude that was with her went up there and found out who threw it and knocked that fucker out cold. It was awesome. Good times.

Ted I'm retired SEAL and in first landing state park in Virginia Beach I would use Stranglehold as an anthem. I would go the last 1.5 miles with Stranglehold. I did that 20 plus years then one day took a wrong turn while running to SH and tore my ACL. it kept me young and Yes Spec ops, Marines all those types live for it. Ted Thankyou.

I had to watch this because I have a DVD where he plays Stranglehold and it's amazing. I was thinking first time I watched it, man, this guy is not afraid to really show what he has inside. I know exactly what he means when he says, "I am the licks."
I was getting into this & he went onto Cat scratch then skipped right on up to Current stuff. What about Double Live Gonza. One of THE greatest live Guitar drivin albums of all time. If you take how clean Teds tone was & how intensely he played & compared it to any other guitarists of that era. As far as straight out lead guutar playing goes, Ted was clearly one of the best, if not The best in those days.

My interpretation of "Stranglehold" on its face, is that it is a tremendously complex and forceful 'romantic' Ballad that captures.
My rough interpretations of this 'Ballad' if you care to entertain it, are below:
Plot: 3 - parts. Intro. lyrics. The Solo. Final lyrics.
The intro. lyrics [from a very male stereotype/perspective] establish a couple who have just recently experienced a bad break-up. Evidently, so bad, his "Baby" ran away.
The male character admits that she "put him in [his] place." In a passion, "tearing up the street," the male char. has "come again" to her door? "Like a dog in heat." He's reminding her how "smokin" their relationship was and he wants/expects her to stay by-his-side because he is a force to be reckoned with; he's going places, nothing is gonna get in his way -- "You better trust your fate." He is her fate.
The solo: (I think) it is a melodic representation of the 'future' he sees for both of them--with all the "highs" and "lows" (i.e. a guitar solo as a metaphor for Life and relationship). He's still standing outside the door, telling her his vision of a future with no barriers, not even death, and she's along for the 'ride' as far as he's concerned.
Final lyrics:
Repeating reminders of how they are 'entwined' by passion. Perhaps he is getting desperate, bitter? She's not opening the door? He reminds her that he knows he has a stranglehold on her heart, her passion--he knew when they first passionately embraced in a 'crushing' kiss.
I can see the guy walking away, absolutely "sure" that their relationship isn't over. So the song represents a moment in time between two people who are at the very least--passionate.
I believe "Strangehold" masterfully delivers an honest, and complex 'story' of love and angst as told (right or wrong) through the Male perspective of the time.
Ted is the epitome of hard rock...so many great songs delivered in a vessel so confident and in your face...a perfect picture of the alpha dog in full domination mode. Had there been an internet in those days, the Motor City Madman wouldn't have broken it...he would have obliterated it. Ted is the man.
Ted Nugent should be in the Rock Hall of Fame! And he should be considered one of the greatest rock guitar players of all time. Ted holding that guitar is a possessed beast! He's an assassin with that instrument. Separate the political from the musical.

Glad I got to meet Ted once in an Abilene, Texas music store. You and Chris Duarte. I was browsing some guitars with my son when this guy, later I found out, Chris came in, sat down near my son and I, picked up a Strat and we were both in awe watching that cat cut loose. Then Uncle Ted walked into the store. I went from watching a blues master at play to thinking I was transported to rock Meca. Ted was gracious and signed my T-shirt. I was broke back then, in the military, otherwise, I would have purchased a guitar on the spot and asked him to sign that instead.
He's never been quite as good without Derek St Holmes in the band

Ted is absolutely respected by a majority of active US military, veterans, and patriots. The commercial music industry is absolutely liberal, disrespectful, and ‘tone deaf.’
I saw Ted in the early 80s at the San Bernardino Orange Pavilion and while he's playing Stranglehold some guy in the middle in the center right in front of him kept spitting on his guitar TED asked for the house lights to go on he threw his guitar off on to the stage and he jumped into the crowd and started swinging like a wild man the the crowd went wild and security pulled him off and threw him back up on the stage is one of the wildest Things I've ever seen at a concert

Hollywood makes out that the 1960s were America's best time for financial and political reasons but as a man born in 1945 and a teen in the 60s I can say without doubt the 1970s was America's best era for music , non lethal drugs , concerts and festivals and most of all women , I had so much fun in the 70s the past 4 decades combined cannot equal the fun I had starting in 1971 after being discharged from the Marine corps.
Derek St Holmes an unbelievable singer. Ted never liked Derek getting the accolades and the spotlight. EGO brought about the end of the Ted Nugent Band.
LOL - According to Derek in an interview about 5 years ago, it was his (Derek) use of drugs and booze that caused Nugent to fire him. I really love how people make Derek out to have been the real star of that band and yet he did nothing in the music industry to speak of unless he was with Nugent. Derek was very open and honest in that interview and said flat out that Ted did not use drugs and made it clear to all members that if they did use and it began to show up onstage or in the studio and be a problem, they would be fired. The drugs and booze did start becoming a problem and true to his word Nugent fired them all.
Double Gonzo live on vinyl will always be one of the greatest live albums of all time. A local bar I used to play pool in had Stranglehold on the jukebox. I would always play it, long ass killer song that gave you your money’s worth. If I ever won the lottery a vintage Gibson Byrdland like Ted’s would be on my wish list. Years ago I saw one of his on the wall at the Hard Rock Cafe in Detroit...I was seriously thinking about "borrowing” it lol

I would kinda agree with Uncle Ted at a lot of levels, one for sure is clean living and focus makes you successful with hard work and dedication. You don't have to be played to be a player in any industry, mark your own path and follow it until YOU are done with it, and then move quickly on or stay. But you do it on your own terms.

Whatever one might think about his politics, I respect the fact that he stayed away from drugs.
I can also relate to what he says when talking about not realizing that the Amboy Dukes song was about getting high. When you don't use drugs, you don't think that way, as I can attest to myself.
But unlike Ted, I also grew up around drug abusers and dealers. Which taught me few things about how they think, and are.
These people can be unscrupulous, and dangerous when cornered.
I'm just glad I chose not to use drugs myself. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't be here today...

20 year Navy vet. Never had the opportunity to play Strangle Hold before battle. But I watched the first launch fighter jets in Desert Storm from the USS Saratoga-CV-60. We only thought of our pilots coming home. But our pilots were tenacious. A little know fact. During a planning session under the FLEET ADMIRAL, our pilots were criticized for losing plans and pilots. But our pilots did so much damage. Dropping bombs down the smoke stacks of power plants, I've seen footage of a pilot blowing the control tower of a dam. The Admiral knew of the success of our pilots and shut the meeting down saying "The Saratoga pilots are engaging the enemy and inflicting damage far more than the rest of your And you claim they aren't doing their job." The room got quiet.

Even though Ted get's almost no credit, Stranglehold is one of the most iconic, amazing rock songs in history.The mix, the guitar, the vocals. It never gets old for me. I rate it top 5 along with Detroit Rock City. 40 plus years later It's still one of my favorites ever.
The first show I was supposed to see with Ted was him opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd . But Artimus Pyle broke his arm in a bar fight and they canceled the show . A year or so later and they had their horrific plane crash ...... and I'm still sick about missing that show . I went on to see Ted 5 times . The first after Free - For - All came out . Then after Weekend Warriors came out ( Nearly blew the roof off that place ) . I also saw his NUGENT tour with the return of Derrick St. Holmes , an INCREDIBLE SHOW ! We saw him at the Texxas Jam and also for his Intensities in Ten Cities album . I still have the shirts for the NUGENT tour ( camo sleeves ) , The Texxas Jam and the Intencitiea in Ten Cities tour ... GREAT FUN ! ..... Thanks Ted ! The 1st time I went to see Ted Nugent a small airplane crashed in the venue the day before he was set to play! ~ I got to see him play a few years later with Lynyrd Skynyrd at Anaheim Stadium just a month before they perished in an airplane crash. Ted came out on stage atop a giant speaker and did a forward flip off it while playing his Gibson!
I used the crash to ditch school that day.
