    how did i miss this video. that really wants to go so the more pipes you have on there the faster it will go.like to see that one on a small lake on a calm day,that might evenm go the full distance in a small pont by the looks of it.great video.

    I've got a shed with loads of tools I use for metal work and soldering and welding, I've never thought of making these, they look so easy to make, but maybe that's just years of experience making it look that way, I'll have to give making a pop pop boat a try, thank you for the information

      I strongly recommend Daryl Foster's channel - link in my video description - he made some excellent boats. He has stopped now, but his channel is still there so you can see his work.

      @@GrandadIsAnOldMan I just discovered Daryl's channel, SUCH amazing work. Artist, craftsman, scientist, filmmaker and silly old fart. Charmed me into watching his entire channel over two days. At first I was a little frustrated because I started looking at his more advanced designs and I knew nothing about put put pop pop oscillating pressure wave boat engines. I decided to watch his videos in order and did just a little googlewebbing and now I feel like I have a good grounding to start experimenting myself. I like his "Easybuild version" not just because it promises to be easy to build but it sounds like an over-cammed V8 burbling away at idle. th-cam.com/video/aOeSnlWnnIo/w-d-xo.html

      @@GrandadIsAnOldMan I was impressed with the power of this engine - do you think it was the number of tubes, or the heat source that made the difference?

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AtomicShrimp mainly the heat source I would think plus I took a little more care on the pipe bends following the advice Daryl Foster gave me. He recommends they have an upward section before they drop down to the water. Whether it made a difference or not I cannot really tell without making an identical one without the extra bends but he has been doing pop pop boats for a long time. I also suspect longer pipes would help. Twice when I started this boiler it reached a heat where it seemed to expel all the water in one sudden burst and then may not have refilled itself effectively and I had to give it a top up. There is an awful lot to learn here before I get really effective boilers. I have been watching some old Japanese videos where they seem to be very effective and they don't have the extra bend. Here is an example th-cam.com/video/N6TaBxz5VpY/w-d-xo.html

      How far up into the cylinder do you push the tubes? Centre different?

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stevesyncox9893 good question. I have made several pop pop boats that are just a coiled pipe, so there is no "boiler chamber" to push the pipe into. They still work the same way. The water boils, turning to steam. The steam takes more space than the water did, so it pushes out down the pipe, where it cools, condenses back to water, thereby reducing the space required and the water outside pushes back in again. When it is running right, the steam never actually escapes all the way down the tube before it has cooled, condensed and is drawn back again. So in answer to your question, I don't think it makes any difference. I just did a quick Google check and water expands by a factor of 1700 when it turns to steam, so you don't need much water in your boiler. th-cam.com/video/me5ZVMD6N6Y/w-d-xo.html

    The boiler chamber on a typical is able to flex which helps with the in/out movement of water. You're relying solely on steam vacuum to make that movement.

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kenneth. Are you able to provide any data that supports your comment? How would the flexing diaphragm change the performance other than give the pleasing Pop Pop sound? Oh, and did you miss a comma between steam and vacuum? obviously steam is not a vacuum.

    Solid alcohol tabs might be a little too hot for effective use. personally I believe an oscillating pulse action happens with a twin tube system.

      Not really, it is in water after all, so if the worst happens you can sink it quickly, but generally the only thing that gets hot is the middle of the boiler and the middle of the tealight. If you check my playlist, most of these boats are plastic or foam, like this one.

    use 2 pipes and fill them with water prior to lighting the boiler.
    its honestly quite irratating seeing you hold the lighter under a dry boiler to no avail.
