I made avocado toast with a fried egg for breakfast everyday for 6 months, and it was so cheap. I made one for probably $1.25. So the fact that restaurants are charging $12-$20 for it is highway robbery.
I thought avocados were expensive, where are you getting these avocados mate? I’d like to mention restaurants have to earn money by upping the price, and depending on the bread and size, the eggs (Cost more if their cage free), honestly $12 dollars may be reasonable, even $20, if there is more expensive ingredients.
Insider is having a mid-life crisis and I’m here for it. The metronome sway from shallow adoration to jaded criticism to the foods they feature is gold.
I think they mentioned at the beginning that some of the items were on the list for overstaying. So yes, they hyped some of these foods at first, but they didn't continue to cash in on the trend.

Actually number 7, the veggie noodles makes a lot of sense. My sister can't eat gluten, due to a disease called 'celiac'. Gluten breaks down her intestines. So we eat noodles made of veggies all the time. They are a healthier alternative, and the kinds we get taste just like normal noodles.
No, they are a healthier alternative for HER. This hatred of carbs is illogical, naive, and dangerous. Carbohydrates are necessary for human health, just like ALL nutrients are. I've always hated gold leaf! Yeah that's what I want on my food, a very thin layer of metal. once you're putting gold leaf on things you know you've run out of ideas
Adding gold and silver in edible form is an age old tradition all over India... these two metals increases your lifespan, boosts your immunity and makes you stronger physically... in the older days the Kings of India used to have food on silver plates and spoons and also used to regularly incorporate gold and silver in edible form in their everyday diet .... so its actually a great thing... even today a lot of Indian sweets have silver leaf / foil on every piece !
Yeah, as someone who grew up eating avocados at home (and loved them), seeing people use avocados to stereotype and make fun of white people in their late 20s for eating it because it's "trendy" seemed funny to me. It's not like no one else was eating or enjoying them before the millennials grew up. I never thought of avocados being a "white millennial food", but rather just a fruit that Hispanics of all ages ate and still eat with their meals. I'm glad that more people are enjoying them though. Avocados are awesome.
I have had actual real truffle. I love them. My favorite thing ever. The truffle oil is not that bad...some are actually good. Don't be so pretentious.
KA AH you can find truffle products like oils or cheeses for decent prices that will give you a taste of them. Don’t trust this video. Truffle oil does taste like truffle. You can start with that of a truffle cheese until you’re able to afford the real thing. The only reason why I was able to eat them is because my sister is a chef and has access to many of these nice luxurious foods for a fraction of the actual price and sometimes even for free.
@@christina9470 Even truffle oil is ridiculously expensive here, and I haven't been able to get it as solely truffle oil, it was another oil mixed with a bit of truffle I think, but still thanks. I might be able to find it if I wait a bit. I agree with everything except for carb alternatives. Spiralized vegetables are a lifesaver for diabetics, people with insulin resistance, and people who are carb sensitive in general.
Fibers safe DM patients, not directly veggies. Sweet fruit juice without fibers harms DM patients. Yes, fructose doesn't increase insulin lvl, and goes in blood stream, but it directly goes to the liver! Liver has to metabolite it. But fibers disturbs all sugar adsorption. Keys are "Fibers", NOT veggies fuice themselves. In 1 era about 10-20 years ago maybe? The doctors recommend DM patients eat fruit sugar or frutose, but it became worst! So Fibers is what DM patients really need. Yet, fibers contain phytonutrients, very powerful to prevent illness. Why throw them away? So juice without fibers shouldn't, never ever be a good trend.
What we really need is vegetablized noodles. Noodles in the shape of vegetables. So, you can feel like you're eating healthy without actually eating healthy.
I agree with almost nothing in this video except how damaging it is for the environment to buy avocados. I don't eat spiralized vegetables as a card replacement. Its just its own cuisine to me. I LOVE raw vegan dishes like pad thai that uses spiralized vegetables. I'm not necessarily trying to replace my carbs, just enjoying a different type of meal from time to time.
Zoodles are great because… 1. They're good for you. 2. They taste great with pesto. 3. Zucchinis grow like rabbits breed. Buy up your local farmer's surplus.
Yeah, I don't eat those often because I do them by hand with a knife and it's not something I am very good at so it takes me a lot of time to prepare but it's still really good. Maybe the problem is if people sees it as something to replace pasta with rather than something of its own.
I just made a comment like that! They related it to pasta and said they would pick pasta over zucchini pasta, obviously everyone would pick regular pasta over it but if you are trying to be more healthy and are on a diet. You would pick zucchini pasta. And it really doesn’t even taste that bad if you cook it right.
I'm American and I've never had gold leaf on my foods in the US. But I've had it in Seoul, South Korea and in London. I think it really depends on what city you come from, not which country. Both of these cities that I mentioned are bigger than the city that I'm from, hence more access to trendier foods.
Pumpkin is actually really good for dogs and pumpkin flavoured dog treats have been common for years, even without the pumpkin spice everything trend. I know my dog goes wild for that exact brand and flavour of treats that they’re bashing in the video.

@@pompomii9881 That's true with all food, it's all about the balance. Despite that, desserts are just not healthy. They're fatty making them harder to digest, cause a lot of calories (but they do taste good). If you do eat dessert with white sugar you should exercise or burn it off but with fruit, it's not as necessary since the sugar is easier to digest. That isn't to say you shouldn't exercise, just that fruit sugar is healthier than white sugar and gives a similar result.
In Asia, it's necessary to list the trend: boba tea everything. They created boba tea pizzas, boba tea popsicles, boba tea cakes, boba tea dumplings, boba puddings. @@monserratarreola I honestly feel like people from the USA calling themselves Americans is not the best, like all of us are “Americans” and they kind of took that term as if America was only the US therefore they were the ONLY Americans
@@danielazafra4137 I see your point, and I get how it can be frustrating; however, "American" is on the basis of nationality. For example, a citizen from Peru is Peruvian, just like a citizen from the United States of America is American. I'd suppose that you can say "I'm North American" if you're either Mexican, American, and/or Canadian. Much like you can say "I'm South American" if you're from Ecuador, Brazil, and/or Chile, etc. There's also Central America, so people from the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and/or Costa Rica, etc can say they're Central American.
Xander I tasted those things, it’s very hard to describe, but I definitely know that it feels like you are killing yourself 100 times faster than a normal Oreo would
Kate O'Neill Same. People are too focused on it being ONLY a pasta substitute. I think it’s a fun way to prep vegetables and then you can serve it how ever you like: in a salad, stir fry, make a cute spiral design on a veggie pizza. etc.
Was about to comment this. Ive made dozens of cool dishes with spiralized veggies. And a hand spiralizer is super cheap. Not a trend that should die, from noodles to salad its great!
I genuinely didn't know what avocado toast was and I "invented" it in my kitchen one day. Made toast, sliced up avocado, fried an egg, and put some syrup on it(I'm American and its more corn syrup) and I liked it. I didnt know it was a thing until later.
The funny thing about avocado toast is that in countries like Chile (and other countries in latin America ) avocado toast is not a trendy instagram worthy healthy breakfast bc we've been eating it at "tea time" since like forever and apparently is one of the reason chilean are having weight problems.
I never eat avocado toast, but blaming avocado on cartel activity seems way too far. The cartel will extort money from anything they can find regardless of the trends... It just happened to be avocado that was trendy...
Yes the demand skyrocketed because of the trend. Which led to a semi-shortage of resources to grow them and actual avocados. Then the cartels began to divert water from all of the farmers and either force farmers to sell to them or grow for them. There's a great documentary about it on Netflix.
@Alex Blazquez yeah no.... I live in the south and avocado toast is everywhere. Watch the news, read, check avocado prices. Simple things will show you that it's a fact ....
The avocado was hudgely popular long before the 2010s though, at least in the States. The Cartels only got involved once the USA stopped banning imports of avocados from Mexico. Also, they're not blaming the cartels, they're just posing the question of them being an ethical food given the amount of crime involved and the fact that in large parts of Chile, people who live there have to get their drinking water delivered by a tanker, becaue the river water is used for irrigation of the avocado crop by farmers, as it's a huge money maker due to this ridiculous trend.
That girl in the green was literally so annoying, why judge someone for avocado toast? because it’s “expensive”? any food at restaurants are overpriced, and everyone knows it’s cheaper to cook at home. Places will charge $10+ for pancakes or waffles (cheaply made at home), which is ridiculous too but no one is judging for that. Eggs Benedict ~$10-15, yet I made this at home with a $1 packet of hollandaise from the store, can get a dozen eggs for $1 (yet I only use two so 8¢), two pieces of bread (can get a loaf for $1), and whatever seasonings and extra veggies you wanna add on it. Guaranteed less than $3 but people still pay a lot. That’s cuz restaurants are business! I’m not judging anyone ordering whatever they want when they GO OUT TO EAT just because of prices, cuz everything is overpriced!
Bidane Martinez-Huerta I understand your comment but I don’t think going out to eat is about eating food you can’t easily make at home. Hell, a lot of people pay money every morning to get coffee, which is also a very easy thing to make at home. People pay for fried chicken sandwiches or French fries at restaurants which can be easily made at home. A lot of things are easily made at home. I don’t think we should still judge people for ordering what they want. Going out to eat is a social event too - catching up with friends, going on dates, enjoying a relaxing time with the family. A lot of meetings I have is over food. And being a vegetarian, sometimes I don’t have many options to order much from brunch except avocado toast or pancakes. The purpose of going to a restaurant isn’t just to “order something you can’t easily make at home”, you’re paying for convenience, service and experience
Yeah I agree. I also just appreciate not making my food all the time, and trying different takes on something I can make to improve my own cooking. If we are using avocado toast as an example, I went to a restaurant and ordered one for $6, and I had really liked how it wasn’t just mashed up avocado on plain toast. They had put little bits of goat cheese, pumpkin seeds, and seasonings on it that made it feel refreshing for me to not eat my same boring recipe of my own avocado toast. Idk people are acting like it’s so unheard of that eating at restaurants is more expensive than cooking at home. Everyone knows that, but it’s not gonna stop me from not wanting to try new things on the menu all the time so I can occasionally stick to what I am familiar with
Daniella Maniera She is right you are literally getting robbed if you buy avocado toast for more than $10 you’re paying double for something you can make it home in 20 minutes with the same quality as a chef
the girl in the video isn't wrong, the consequences of demand came from a fad trend. aguacate is a staple, homegrown delicacy in CA and MX where we farm it. It got disgustingly gentrified here by the gringos.

Low carb diets are mainly adapted by people too dumb to understand how to lose weight. Kinda like the diet zero sugar product trend and the low fat trend before that. A bunch of horse shit made up by the food industry to trick people too dumb and lazy to inform themselves properly into buying products they don't need for the opposite result of what was promised. And now several decades have passed since this strategy was implemented and people still aren't catching on! Did you know there was once a marketing campaign that convinced people that sugar was not only a good way to stay skinny/lose weight but also apparently a cure-all drug? People were stuffing their faces with a spoon full of it on the daily!
I’m celiac and things like zoodles and rice noodles help help me out lot when cooking at home and eating at restaurants and to simply say that zoodles are a “trend” that should be left in the past is ignorant, just because someone else don’t have a intolerance or dietary issue doesn’t mean they should get to bash food products that help people who do

In Mexico we put avocado on everything I grew up eating “avocado toast” but instead of bread we put it on migadas.
What are migadas?
Yeah, as someone who grew up eating avocados at home (and loved them), seeing people use avocados to stereotype and make fun of white people in their late 20s for eating it because it's "trendy" seemed funny to me. It's not like no one else was eating or enjoying them before the millennials grew up. I never thought of avocados being a "white millennial food", but rather just a fruit that Hispanics of all ages ate and still eat with their meals. I'm glad that more people are enjoying them though. Avocados are awesome.

I haven't tried it because it's way too expensive here. Still curious though
I agree with everything except for carb alternatives. Spiralized vegetables are a lifesaver for diabetics, people with insulin resistance, and people who are carb sensitive in general.
Susie Thomas Yeah, my brother is a celiac and i have this gluten free cook book and that’s very common to see, but he doesn’t eat spiralized veggies.
Add better nutrition
What we really need is vegetablized noodles. Noodles in the shape of vegetables. So, you can feel like you're eating healthy without actually eating healthy.
I agree with almost nothing in this video except how damaging it is for the environment to buy avocados. I don't eat spiralized vegetables as a card replacement. Its just its own cuisine to me. I LOVE raw vegan dishes like pad thai that uses spiralized vegetables. I'm not necessarily trying to replace my carbs, just enjoying a different type of meal from time to time.

Yeah, I don't eat those often because I do them by hand with a knife and it's not something I am very good at so it takes me a lot of time to prepare but it's still really good. Maybe the problem is if people sees it as something to replace pasta with rather than something of its own.

The growers were most likely already being extorted before it became trendy and sadly will continue after the trendy move to something else
@Alex Blazquez yeah no.... I live in the south and avocado toast is everywhere. Watch the news, read, check avocado prices. Simple things will show you that it's a fact ....
@Alex Blazquez I'm in Denver and ppl eat that crap like there's no tomorrow..
True, but if your going to go out to eat, get something thats actually worth the price, not something thats easily and much cheaply recreated at home.
When I think of truffles I think of a chocolate delight.🤩🤩🤩🤩😋😋😋😋
They have a vid about almost all of these trends 😂
Apparently, they don't mind "rebranding" to a hate on foods and culture and creators channel.
@@EazyCheezyGirl hate and criticism are different
The fact that food insider literally made these trends happen-
crediting Gwenyth effing Paltrow with avocado toast when it’s been a regular food in Australia for decades is … disgusting.

If gold sheet is in your poop, does that make your poop expensive? Can you sell it?
It seems dangerous.

@@laurahuynh8333 Leaf gold costs about 70€(78USD~) a book, the book consists of 25 pages that are 80x80mm(~3.14x3.14") squares.
that's about 2.8€(3.1USD) per leaf which about covers a burger bun more or less?
So, not very :)=

These people are so snobby!! Especially the girl talking about how truffles are supposed to be expensive and rare... privileged much?
Avocados are cheap in Asia. I've loved them since I was a child. I have them all the time when they're in season.
Good for you
It's good when you can have it when it's growing natively where you grow up and it comes in season the only real problem is the demand for it when it's not season for it because people are freaking greedy selfish over-privileged brats who want it now
@Marco Cubides Domínguez not in Mexico tho...
Omg true.
@Angie Harper ..... the issue in the USA is consumers DEMAND to have ANY & ALL fruits & veggies year round regardless if they are in season or not.
I never thought I'd be able to say the phrase "I liked avocados before they were cool"
Same... Well, I actually initially hated them as a little kid (in the 90s) but came to like them when I was a little older.
@@leonamay8776 both of my parents liked them so I grew up eating avocados and stuff like that so when they got popular I got so many "omg Ur such a white girl" when I was just trying to eat lunch or something
White people moment. Bruh it’s just a regular vegetable except it grows in a different place. My mom uses it regularly in salads and sides since forever. Being obsessed with avocados makes you look stupid.
Avocados are really good and healthy 😂
Edit: literally how are any of these bad???!?!?
“Oh why would people not want to eat carbs, totally just some trend thing and not a dietary adaption for things like celiac and carb intolerance”
Also helped with my diabetes. I have nothing but the personal experience to show though.
I’m celiac and things like zoodles and rice noodles help help me out lot when cooking at home and eating at restaurants and to simply say that zoodles are a “trend” that should be left in the past is ignorant, just because someone else don’t have a intolerance or dietary issue doesn’t mean they should get to bash food products that help people who do
Lunicode * and diabetes
Keto diet is good. It helped me and a lot of people before.

Also Insider:
Some of this stuff is so pointless and extra it's kind of offensive. Billions of people struggle with food insecurity and here we are wrapping chicken wings in gold leaf... something about that doesn't sit right with me.

Moral of the story: *stop creating useless trends*
The only one that's actually useful is just the carb alternatives, since a lot of people actually gain benefits from those. Probably juice cleanses for those who want to take a break from processed foods, but the rest are really meh.
Disclaimer: no hate on the avocado. I truly believe that avocado is good, although it's not for me since the butter-like mouthfeel really throws me off. I really, truly pity the avocado farmers who had to deal with the negative impacts of the trend, and hopefully, nothing similar ever happen again
honestly, truffle oil can be great if you know where to find them. I've also had truffle brie cheese with visible pieces of black truffle
