I'm a US Army vet introduced to the M16 in '86.
In all those years, I've ended up gravitating to PMags, Dura Mags and USGI mags upgraded with Magpul followers/springs.
I don't like any mag that "puts your round count on blast" - if YOU can see it, YOUR ENEMY can see it.
Also, shiny metal on your kit (ie brass in a "see through" mag) will get you "offed" in a tactical environment

Good info. Early 90's in the military they had us down load M16 magazines that had been fully loaded, in storage for 10yrs. No issues from the mags. P-mags, I have some green 1st gen AR15 mags loaded for almost a decade now. They stopped the green because the dye compromised the mags. I have had zero issues with these mags breaking, cracking, not feeding. Now Pmag Glock mags, will only use them on the range. Had some loaded for a few months and the follower was dragging causing malfunctions. KCI, had some for AK's and other weapons when they first came out and they were subpar, that may have changed, will have to give them a try again.

Kci ak mag they stamped the followers off kilt a bit. The gen 2 fixed that. The gen 1 was ok till the last rd or 2 . The 40s they made a ton so forever the gen 1 was still available. You’ll know immediately when u stick the first rd in and it’s a little sloppy . It should push tight against the right side of the mag.

In all my years I've only had 1 pmag (m4 gen2) fail, but that was due to it taking a hard drop.
Never had any issues with the aluminum gi style ones either aside from occasionally scratching the crap out of my thumb nail while loading fast.
For KCI I've only used their glock mags, 1 of 4 was doa and the other 3 had feeding issues with anything heavier than 115gr fmj so they're for training along with the pmags (which have spring bind up issues even after cleaning and using brass case).
Just do not get Promag...back when I was young and didn't know much about firearms I got some and none of them were ever reliable or even worked regardless of what platform they went to.

I don't understand the lightweight statement/ argument for polymer mags. I've weighed them out my USGI production mags from Okay, Brownells, Colt,Center and adventure line and they weigh less then my Pmags gens 2-3 . I feel like its a talking point everyone excepts and doesn't look into. Sure perhaps pound per pound of material used the polymer in a Pmag is lighter but the magazine walls are thicker on the pmags vs the USGI and there are issues with older mag pouches and Pmags regarding mag fitment because of the width.

The first British magazine use hearkens back to the Lee-Metford on the early Second Boer War when they still initially fought in line formations with volley sights, and it is single loaded in respect organization and cadence of fire with a single magazine issued to be used whenever ordered to fire at will. The issuing of magazines is dropped in the first Lee-Enfields for the first stripper clip use as they fought the Boers with Mausers and they easily saw the practicality of it and almost started issuing the the P13 Mauser-style rifle in a new higher velocity cartridge. It never came back in popularity and issue in the Great War due to economic scale and reliability concerns on horrid environments aside from the occasional use of magazines for static trench rifles, even custom made 20 rounder ones for such purpose. The removable magazine functionality remained in the as it did not inhibit the designs as its later variants and used for maintainability and refurbishing purposes but with magazines that are not universally interchangeable and made no conscious effort in doing so with one often being hand-fitted to a rifle in the inter-wars and throughout WW2
