- This is a case of the Food Packet Survival, Abandon Ship. This case provides a full day's food per man, per pack. And there are 15 per case. A real throwback of a ration in more ways than one. The end of an era too. Slightly disappointing in it's condition, but not even remotely as disappointed as I would be if forced to survive off this ration at 1 pack per day.

lol, my dad used to tell me about the coffee container that sat hidden at the top of a hanger. Everyone knew about it, everyone shared, it was always full and no one knew who filled it.
My ship has sunk, I’m stuck with rations, open up the smokes only to find out they packed Kools. I would be so pissed.

They aren’t, it’s just so the guys who smoke don’t have to be in withdrawal without their smokes, just something to help be comfortable until you can be rescued. If they wanted appetite suppression they’d have loaded stuff with caffeine and possibly even included Dexedrine or Amphetamines. It’s just a comfort thing.

No, they were included as a nicotine source. I quit smoking almost 4 years ago and I'm not a fan of my wife's continued smoking so don't interpret my take on this as that of a bitter smoker. The world didn't always cater to nonsmokers the way it does today. I can remember actually smoking on an airplane and in restaurants and at a high school football game, I can also recall buying my cigarettes on military bases including generic cigarettes for 3-5 bucks a carton and having coupons mailed to me from back home for $2 off a carton that was only $3.50 to begin with. Honestly, I think rations made during war-time should include a pack of smokes. Hell we probably lost more men to the enemy than we ever did to smoking. Just my take on it, Happy new year and god bless!

I expected all the packets to contain something different. A different food item each day. If I was in a survival situation, opening that box and finding nothing but caramels would make my hope of survival drop precipitously. And all those little packs of caramels seem to take up a lot of unnecessary space.

Menthols? Odd choice, but if I'm lost in the Pacific on a raft my preferred brand of smokes is not going to be on the top 10 list of my main concerns. I find it amusing that smokes were added to a survival packet designed to "sustain life", but I guess it's a hell of morale boost and undoubtedly prevented fatalities with 3-4 men packed on a life raft all suffering from nicotine withdrawal.
Menthols have tobacco that are infused with an oil derived from various minty plants. I'd assume that over time the oils have soaked into the thin cigarette paper, oxodized and stained it somewhat brown. I'f one of my smokes falls into a puddle and I'm so hard up that I actually save it and leave it to dry, the paper turns the color of raw oak lumber from the "tea" that the tobacco made while drying. I'm sure it's fine, or as safe/fine as any cigarette is ever going to ever be. Aside from unpleasant oxodized compounds, it's probably going to be a more menthol infused draw than a fresh Kool.
Dang, I'm surprised to see smokes in an abandon ship food packet. I've seen a bunch of them but I've never seen one with smokes. Rare find. But it figures that you'd get Kools. Being on a raft for 15 days with Kools is better than 15 days with no smokes...but not by much.
Those Kools are just barely cutting it.. I would much prefer a nice Lucky Strike or something of better quality. This ration really went through the changes over it's span of production and really if anything became more lackluster in the morale department as time went on.
@@Steve1989MRE I could tell watching you smoke it that it was pretty bad. I'm really surprised they would have two packs of menthols in an abandon ship packet. Maybe one of Kools and one of Camels or Luckies. Most smokers that like menthols will tolerate a non-menthol, but someone who's a Luckies smoker will hardly tolerate a Kool. Just not a good choice for a survival situation.
I'm surprised they were putting smokes of any kind in 1975 rations since that's three years after they officially got rid of them in MCI's. I know they had 1973 MCI's that came with smokes that were repacked with a new accessory packet with no smokes so I don't know how this one escaped. I haven't smoked in years now but I'm still in favor putting them in something like an abandon ship packet. It's not like you can stroll over to the ship's store or PX and pick up a pack, and 25% of your guys will be operating below top efficiency with nicotine withdrawals. At least put something like nicotine gum or lozenges in them. It will be one less headache to deal with in a survival situation.

ASMR plus learning. Who knew how interesting MREs could be. Definitely love learning and seeing the differences between country of origin and time period differences and the fact Steve will eat almost anything. Kept me coming back to these videos for the past six months.

That's all my dad smoked back in the day. That package is exactly the same age as I am. He served 2 years in the navy 72-23. I wonder if he had packs that were offered on the ships similar to those. I still remember those Kool packs. Thanks for showing us Steve.
