- This Finland 24 Hour Ration is a mostly vegetarian cold weather MRE. It's fairly lightweight for the 4,100 calorie content, but the menu variation is lacking. Still not a bad ration and worth trying out once for the pate and crisp bread alone.

Here in finland we call the military food yellow and hot, because it doesn't matter what it is, it always boils down to that. It's yellow and it is hot, and pretty much always tastes the same. But its energy so theres that, I guess.

@@ville7762 but not only soy like the terrible crap we got in 00/01, and they last long and taste good. I can't eat bad tasting food even if I'm hungry, so either I brought my own or I was stuck with näkkäri and pate for a week or two.
Kind of surprised that there wasn't more traditional food. I've had MREs from Estonia, Latvia, Russia, Poland. I don't think they'd ever think to make a curry meal.

I have to admit that most stuff I watch on TH-cam are various unboxing mystery box videos and opening the MREs is also one type of unboxing mystery. It is just so relaxing and it also feels like Xmas or birthday every day watching people open mystery boxes. And the best part of it that it does not cost anything. :)

Spent last year eating tens of those rations. Those green pasta meals are terrible. There are like 6 or so different rations and some of them come with the red blåband meals, which are much better. I have a lot of those green meals at home and don't know what to do with them, I'd rather die of starvation than eat 1 more.
Agree. The green ones are lowcost you can get at ÖoB in Sweden..
Well three years ago those blåblands where considered horrible shit. I had like 20 those in my locker and just threw them somewhere when we went home.

I did my service if the FDF in 2006, the MREs were very different back then. We didn't have any of those "just add water in the bag" foods. Instead we got some basic porridge flakes and noodles you had to cook in your mess tin. In the forest we never had time to cook anything so I was always hungry, those crispbreads and the paté (which came in a tin instead of a handy tube) and the chocolate were pretty much the only things I ate out of those MRE bags. Sometimes I ate the noodles dry without cooking them because I was so hungry. Those MREs sucked big time. These newer ones seem better, I guess you could hydrate them with cold water as well.
There's a saying in the FDF, "in a hurry to wait". It was always the same when we were out in the woods. Someone came to wake you up and told you have 5 minutes to put on your gear and pack your stuff and to take a leak, and then we'd wait 30 minutes, not allowed to do anything because something was just about to happen or start. And when you did happen to have some time, you didn't have a portable cooker or other source of heat because those cookers weren't issued to everyone.
I don't see the problem. Eat your meal before you sleep.

@@incumbentvinyl9291 There was no free time to do what you like in the evenings either. We'd get back to our tents late in the evening after a full day of practicing something and then ordered to go sleep. The only thing you were allowed to do is to go take a leak or poop.
Luckily I became a military police and as such had very few "forest camps" (training multiple days somewhere in a forest) as we call them.

You are a brave man to have taken this task upon yourself. For a long time i actually ate those freeze dried meals but towards the end of my service, my body just rejected them. All of them. Even the ones that were deemed "ok" like pasta carbonara or pasta bolognese (extremely rare, only a few nco's and officer trainees have even seen one). But those sport drinks are the real win in the ration. I would even call it a life saver, especially in winter when 1. Your water wouldnt freeze in your canteen, just turned into a slushy thanks to them (if you were too lazy to strap it around your neck and keep it under your jacket) and 2. When on a recon mission or trapped behind enemy lines, your main supply of water would be melted snow, but without the minerals and whatnot that snow lacks, you won't be able to operate for too long. And not only did it add minerals to the water, but also kinda, almost covered some of the smoke flavor from melting the snow. Honorable mentions are the crisp bread + patee, honey roasted nuts and the chocolate, quick easy carbs to get you through the next hour or two.

Yummy that bread is called Ryvita in the UK and it was one of my favourites back in the day.
This takes me back , we were out on a “Tutkinto” during my service in the army (the Finns will know) I hadn’t eaten in 24+ hours and we had marched all night, I needed protein and fats so I went for the Protein bar. It tasted so bad that I vomited which made my situation worse as I was now malnourished and dehydrated. In short , fuck these MREs , the Sports drink and Paella MRE were good though.

Jesus.. what a horrible way to cap off a grueling day. I haven't puked from terrible food in a long time.. it sucks ass though, because you have to taste it again.. I knew just by the flavor(s) on the label it would probably be gross.. meal replacement bars have come a long way.. there is really no excuse for producing one so terribly flavored..

I spent 1 year in the FDF, NCO course and all, and like 3 refreshment courses and I never got to eat any of these "sissipakkaus" as they are called. There was always a field kitchen unit nearby, making "noppasoppa" ("soup of dice" :)) for us. Nice to see what these packs contain today, in case there is ever need to eat one. Looks good enough!

What is the rationale behind giving soldiers in the field an artificially-sweetened sports drink? I'd think you'd WANT the calories.
Seriously, a sports drink is supposed to have sugar in it. Sucralose in a sports drink is silly. Same with the sucralose in the protein bar. I mean, WTF?
I always feel the exact same way about sweeteners in military rations. Add more maltodextrin and sugar and bolster the calorie content.
It's probably because it takes quite a bit more sugar compared to sweetener. Just look how much sugar a can of soda has. It'd make the kit weight a lot more and it's not like it's lacking calories.

In 2016 we had the "main meals" By blåband or something like that. I found them way enjoyable, I had these new sets on my last training session before being released to reserves and they were so bad compared to the predecessors

Eating this during an ftx just hits different. It's truly unbelieveable how different it tastes. Also I think you should mix the porridge during the heating.
You need to mix the food better with spoon and it hydrates better, specially the porridges!
That seems to be the No Fish menu as stated in the content label.
They got vegan, no beef etc variants.
Most of the foods are ok, but I preferred the old school rations where you got the ham pate, liver pate and canned meat to go with the hardbread.
Allso they got peach oatmeal (porridge) that is divine.
A perfect ration for my taste... I love the Apple Cinnamon Porridge for breakfast - the trick is to dump the sugar or marmalade in there before rehydrating. That really is something substantial.

The packages were suposed to be mixed and matched when I was in the service. Take two, exchange their main courses, eat one bag, then the other. And since we are talking about a nordic country heat up your water/ration and you get a better experience.

I have lived 4 weeks with those :) There is actually 6 different packages of those. Light blue colored boxes are best; They have two packages of tuna inside bag. They also have vegetarian packs also.

That rye crisp bread is the best thing in the world. A true Finnish classic. Only needs some butter and you're good to go! That bread is available in any supermarket in Finland in huge packets. I sometimes finish the huge packet in couple of days with just butter on them.

Funny that our company were first ones to try these new 24h mres. Officers asked our opinion we said that they were absolutly horrible and the older 24h mre was much better. Next day they said "we don't care if you don't like it. We just have start use these even though they are bad"...

Ugh. I hated all those outdoors ration bags. Never could make them properly, either raw or soup and never was much for bland vegetarian diet. Those sports drinks weren't for me either. Rather just drank water as i never had trouble with overhydrating. Everything else in those bags though; absolutely perfect. Protein bars always came first, never got one of those peach ones though, and nuts were almost heavenly in the forest. Coffee perfect, not much of a tea drinker but absolutely fine tea, chocolate bar awesome and cocoa went as itself and maybe some creamer in it to top it off.
It was always a pleasure to see a field kitchen setup and get some proper food with meat :D
