For those wondering the "civilian" look of the rations: Every single piece of these rations can be picked up from a well supplied Finnish supermarket. There is no separate military MREs, as demands of non-deployed force of around 30,000 are rather low. So instead civilian suppliers are used. Makes it also easy for reservists to get "war-time" supplies for their hobbies. Spent last year eating tens of those rations. Those green pasta meals are terrible. There are like 6 or so different rations and some of them come with the red blåband meals, which are much better. I have a lot of those green meals at home and don't know what to do with them, I'd rather die of starvation than eat 1 more.
Would that be before or after you've eaten it? ("Spackle" is not a word that is routinely used in British English, so implies an entirely different meaning!)
In the field at night the trick is to carefully open the top of the bag and dump everything out.... then put what you're going to have for breakfast the next morning in a pile.... convenient that you can reach it in the morning..... what you're going to have for supper later goes in the bottom of the bag.... then you roll the bag over on itself ONCE .....so you have a new bottom to the bag..... now you fill it with everything you want to have for lunch.... which should be everything that's left .....then you roll it again on itself and you have a nice neat package that goes in your pack and everything is organized for that day The apple cinnamon porridge mixes better when you use HOT water and I can promise you when it's time to eat it... you cut off the top and drink it right from the bag without having to look at it because it looks nasty
Ah yes, those silver crispbread rations are a legendary Finnish army delicacy. Stores forever, but breaks easily. It's super crunchy and surprisingly easy to bite through, though, texture is similar to corn flakes.
Gotta say though, I loved it when my MRE happened to have a pack of actual rye bread in it, along with the näkkäri. It was a great change, tasted like heaven in the final days of loppusota.
@@ryanbeaulieu2704 Far off! In Germany at least it's mostly tasteless, dry and brittle bread. Lightweight, stores forever. You pretty much have to put a spread or something on it, but it's a great carriage for pretty much everything.
Leader needs to get some non Finnish people to try their stuff after they try to fix the flavourings, probably UK folkes since they are more critical, all Finns will just say, "yeah it's OK or yeah pretty good" (often they say pretty good and I taste it and it's garbage) literally that's about as detailed as their opinion goes and it has to be very bad before they say "yeah that's bad", also they don't complain much in Finland and it shows in some things.

in alot of nordic countries we eat very dark and dense bread, the "whole grain crisp bread" is called knækbrød in danish and is very popular in denmark. Great video steve!
Some ration packs come with shredded tuna, I think it replaces the protein bars if I remember correctly. Mexican cassarole and pasta carbonara are also possibilities within these rations, and of course, soy-based. Sometimes the crisp bread is replaced with weird french flour-free crisp bread that is pretty tasteless but comes in a cardboard box, so it's not all smashed up at least.
This takes me back , we were out on a “Tutkinto” during my service in the army (the Finns will know) I hadn’t eaten in 24+ hours and we had marched all night, I needed protein and fats so I went for the Protein bar. It tasted so bad that I vomited which made my situation worse as I was now malnourished and dehydrated. In short , fuck these MREs , the Sports drink and Paella MRE were good though. #KaartinMafia KAARTJR 1/18
Jesus.. what a horrible way to cap off a grueling day. I haven't puked from terrible food in a long time.. it sucks ass though, because you have to taste it again.. I knew just by the flavor(s) on the label it would probably be gross.. meal replacement bars have come a long way.. there is really no excuse for producing one so terribly flavored..
I did my service if the FDF in 2006, the MREs were very different back then. We didn't have any of those "just add water in the bag" foods. Instead we got some basic porridge flakes and noodles you had to cook in your mess tin. In the forest we never had time to cook anything so I was always hungry, those crispbreads and the paté (which came in a tin instead of a handy tube) and the chocolate were pretty much the only things I ate out of those MRE bags. Sometimes I ate the noodles dry without cooking them because I was so hungry. Those MREs sucked big time. These newer ones seem better, I guess you could hydrate them with cold water as well. There's a saying in the FDF, "in a hurry to wait". It was always the same when we were out in the woods. Someone came to wake you up and told you have 5 minutes to put on your gear and pack your stuff and to take a leak, and then we'd wait 30 minutes, not allowed to do anything because something was just about to happen or start. And when you did happen to have some time, you didn't have a portable cooker or other source of heat because those cookers weren't issued to everyone.
@@incumbentvinyl9291 There was no free time to do what you like in the evenings either. We'd get back to our tents late in the evening after a full day of practicing something and then ordered to go sleep. The only thing you were allowed to do is to go take a leak or poop. Luckily I became a military police and as such had very few "forest camps" (training multiple days somewhere in a forest) as we call them.

I recall mixing the 2 sports drinks into one bottle to create something palatable. I also recall longer hydration times than what was specced in the meal instructions. In my military time (early 90's) we got 18 slices of the bread and a can of paté and also a can of cheese spread. The meals were then canned soups mostly.
I did the same with those sport drinks. Put 2 into the 1L bottle and taste was good with only 1 it's too bland. Ate those mre meals with hot tap water when I was in sick tupa cuz we only got 2 normal meals and then those.

"Oh, you know that's making my gums feel like.. enflamed. Like almost if I'm allergic to something in that. Ugh." "Let me try that again." - Steve1989.
What is the rationale behind giving soldiers in the field an artificially-sweetened sports drink? I'd think you'd WANT the calories. Seriously, a sports drink is supposed to have sugar in it. Sucralose in a sports drink is silly. Same with the sucralose in the protein bar. I mean, WTF?
It's probably because it takes quite a bit more sugar compared to sweetener. Just look how much sugar a can of soda has. It'd make the kit weight a lot more and it's not like it's lacking calories.
They are not using Blå Band meals anymore? When I did military service in 2015 they were still in use and they were really good. But nice to see that they have developed their own freeze dried meals, which apparently are heavily inspired by the Blå Band meals. I can also add that the freeze dried meals need to be stirred after you pour the water, otherwise they turn out lumpy like they did in the video.
I served 2004. best pack then had Knorr carbonara pasta. Still buy that stuff now and then. Then there was one with blå band banana something. It was awfull 😬
In 2016 we had the "main meals" By blåband or something like that. I found them way enjoyable, I had these new sets on my last training session before being released to reserves and they were so bad compared to the predecessors
Just want to say thank you for your videos. I was never into MRE stuff. But I enjoy your content. So much so that I have my first shipment is coming this week! Keep up the good work my dude!
A good review Steve but I gotta mention that the cola flavoured sports drinks were quite popular during my time in the Finnish defence forces. We used to mix at least two bags in the amount of water you had though, so maybe making it twice as concentrated makes a difference
We had different blå band outdoor meals instead of those when I did my time in the Finnish Defence Forces. According to my brother these meals are much worse! I actually loved the blå band meals #tacostew
Hey Steve, I have a great video suggestion for you! You should take one of those old fishing kits from one of your survival rations and go fishing with it!
You need to stir it again really good half way while it's rehydration. Otherwise you get settling on the bottom that does not get moisture. That's why when you pour it out you got a bunch of liquid followed by dry chunks.
I spent 1 year in the FDF, NCO course and all, and like 3 refreshment courses and I never got to eat any of these "sissipakkaus" as they are called. Eating this during an ftx just hits different. It's truly unbelieveable how different it tastes. Also I think you should mix the porridge during the heating.
You need to mix the food better with spoon and it hydrates better, specially the porridges! That seems to be the No Fish menu as stated in the content label. They got vegan, no beef etc variants. Most of the foods are ok, but I preferred the old school rations where you got the ham pate, liver pate and canned meat to go with the hardbread. Allso they got peach oatmeal (porridge) that is divine.

The packages were suposed to be mixed and matched when I was in the service. Take two, exchange their main courses, eat one bag, then the other. And since we are talking about a nordic country heat up your water/ration and you get a better experience.

Spent last year eating tens of those rations. Those green pasta meals are terrible. There are like 6 or so different rations and some of them come with the red blåband meals, which are much better. I have a lot of those green meals at home and don't know what to do with them, I'd rather die of starvation than eat 1 more.
Agree. The green ones are lowcost you can get at ÖoB in Sweden..
Well three years ago those blåblands where considered horrible shit. I had like 20 those in my locker and just threw them somewhere when we went home.
Donate them to a local food bank. I'm sure someone who is actually starving would be happy to have them.

I loved his "You could spackle an entire brick house with this" statement :-)
Would that be before or after you've eaten it? ("Spackle" is not a word that is routinely used in British English, so implies an entirely different meaning!)
@@DraftySatyr Consumption of brick houses is not recommended.
In the field at night the trick is to carefully open the top of the bag and dump everything out.... then put what you're going to have for breakfast the next morning in a pile.... convenient that you can reach it in the morning..... what you're going to have for supper later goes in the bottom of the bag.... then you roll the bag over on itself ONCE .....so you have a new bottom to the bag..... now you fill it with everything you want to have for lunch.... which should be everything that's left .....then you roll it again on itself and you have a nice neat package that goes in your pack and everything is organized for that day
The apple cinnamon porridge mixes better when you use HOT water and I can promise you when it's time to eat it... you cut off the top and drink it right from the bag without having to look at it because it looks nasty
"You could spackle a brick house with this" LMAO!!!!!!!
Rem that’s super harsh even coming from Steve who is the most wholesome guy I know lol
Knäckebrot! We have that stuff in Germany, too. :)
Like an oatmeal cookie?

Eat these every day and you automatically take part in nopoopnovember
Some ration packs come with shredded tuna, I think it replaces the protein bars if I remember correctly. Mexican cassarole and pasta carbonara are also possibilities within these rations, and of course, soy-based. Sometimes the crisp bread is replaced with weird french flour-free crisp bread that is pretty tasteless but comes in a cardboard box, so it's not all smashed up at least.
Yay citrus bleached paper drink!

What about cola dish detergent drink?
This takes me back , we were out on a “Tutkinto” during my service in the army (the Finns will know) I hadn’t eaten in 24+ hours and we had marched all night, I needed protein and fats so I went for the Protein bar. It tasted so bad that I vomited which made my situation worse as I was now malnourished and dehydrated. In short , fuck these MREs , the Sports drink and Paella MRE were good though.

I don't see the problem. Eat your meal before you sleep.
I didn't have issues with this in the military.

Mmmmm.... Bleached paper with a citrus undertone!
Waiting for Steve to test the toilet paper one episode. He farts after wiping: “nice hiss, somewhat pleasant aroma of an old C ration, between 45’-58’, undertones of instant type 2”

Hello people, I am glad you reviewed my rations.
"Oh, you know that's making my gums feel like.. enflamed. Like almost if I'm allergic to something in that. Ugh."
"Let me try that again." - Steve1989.
I always feel the exact same way about sweeteners in military rations. Add more maltodextrin and sugar and bolster the calorie content.
It's probably because it takes quite a bit more sugar compared to sweetener. Just look how much sugar a can of soda has. It'd make the kit weight a lot more and it's not like it's lacking calories.
Jaakko Ruotsalainen diss it all you want, but sugar is food.sweeteners are chemicals. in combat or even hard training, you need food, not chemicals.
@@gulfrelay2249 uhh...sugar itself is a chemical
Carson Siu But a naturally occurring chemical. Better than something a mad scientist came up with...

Yummy that bread is called Ryvita in the UK and it was one of my favourites back in the day.
Windir I love that band. No one knows who they are where I live lol.
I served 2004. best pack then had Knorr carbonara pasta. Still buy that stuff now and then. Then there was one with blå band banana something. It was awfull 😬

A good review Steve but I gotta mention that the cola flavoured sports drinks were quite popular during my time in the Finnish defence forces. We used to mix at least two bags in the amount of water you had though, so maybe making it twice as concentrated makes a difference

Hey Steve,
I have a great video suggestion for you! You should take one of those old fishing kits from one of your survival rations and go fishing with it!
These videos are a great way to work up your appetite, when you're feeling down.
There was always a field kitchen unit nearby, making "noppasoppa" ("soup of dice" :)) for us. Nice to see what these packs contain today, in case there is ever need to eat one. Looks good enough!
How did you prepare these dice?
@@brandonfalcon9348 its a play on words, meaning its a roll of the dice what your gonna get. Sometimes its something good like meatballs but many of times its something horrible but you eat it anyways because you're just too hungry to care
