Best travel hack … travel often! The more I travel, the better I get at packing efficiently.
So true! I travel home to my parents every once in a while (6 hours away with car and ship), and use that to gain experiance, and test how mush I can live (travel) without. I try to stick to a carry-on or hickingbag depending on the trips plan) and a few packing cubes. I have even traveled with only my handbag. A 44 liter, with loads of pockets! Love it!
I wish to do it soon! No matter how old I am, as long as I can travel.
A tip for sneaking on a few extra pounds is to order a "memory foam neck pillow". I ordered one from Amazon and made sure it had a zipper. I was able to sneak on 2.5 extra pounds of clothing by laying them along side the pillow (with the inner foam removed) and rolled the clothes into the shape of the foam. I stuffed them into the pillow and buckled it around my carry on suitcase. This allowed me to take on extra clothing and it also worked as a neck pillow for the plane. Once I got to my destination I unpacked the clothes and put the empty pillow case in my suitcase. We went in the summer so I didn't have jeans but this would be the perfect solution for bringing heavier clothing items.

Thanks Laurie! Instead of packing cubes, I like to use the 2-gallon and 1-gallon Ziplock bags. Not all stores have the 2-gallon on the shelf but you can find them. They are large enough to hold a pair of folded mens Levis, or a few shirts, etc. And I use the 1-gallon for undies, socks, smaller items. When full, I sit on the bag to get all the air out then close the zipper. And just like the fancier cubes, I can just remove from my suitcase and toss them into dresser drawers. Also great for when TSA or customs decide to go through your suitcase. 😁☮️❤️😎

Hi Laurie, It's Laurie from San Diego. Another useful video with great tips and humor as always! Something I do is pack a plastic grocery bag in my personal item (purse) and then put the purse in the bag before I put it under the seat. I cringe when I think of what is probably on that floor and I don't want my purse on it. Safe travels!

I went for 5 weeks with carry on only. I used a softsided backpack that weighs less than 2 lbs when empty. It opened like a clamshell and I used the bundle method of packing to get the most garments in. I purchased lightweight layers for all of my outfits and tried to stay within a capsule wardrobe for mixing and matching all items. My personal items had lots of electronics, meds and limited toiletries. We traveled 5 countries and never had anything even gate checked. We did laundry as needed, either rinsing things out and drying in the bath or using a washer and clothesline at airbnbs. The secret is to try to pack for a week and rinse out things as you go along. The stack/bundle method has proven to be the best on multiple trips over 5 weeks. Hope this helps

Love the idea, though the bundle technique is not my favorite. Have a question. Have you ever had it were your clothes were not dry enough, and you needed to leave from the places you were staying, i.e. washing undies the night before leaving for your next destination, but they are not dry the next morning, and the next destination has no place to dry clothes? I was thinking of packing a small travel sized hairdryer, and use that to dry my clothes when needed, if they were not dry enough following needed time..

I don't usually travel with a hair dryer. Most hair dryers are hard to convert in other countries due to current differences. I have blown fuses on my converters in Sicily trying to use them, but I have used hotel or cruise ship dryers to hasten the laundry drying time to be able to pack up. I always include a few large ziplock bags to place damp items in until I can completely dry an item. Ironing can also help, if there is one available. I usually have a hotel or laundry service do heavy items like jeans or sweaters and just hand wash light weight quick drying items. Planning stops with laundry facilities every 6 days or so helps make it work. Cruise ships usually offer specials on a bag of laundry, so that is a good budget way to get heavier items cleaned.

I can fit the most apparel using the bundle method. Ihave mock packed with cubes, compression cubes, space bags and rolling and still get more in with the bundle method. The best part is that your clothes aren't wrinkled. You put the most likely to get wrinkled in first,so they bundle overeverything else with no hard creases. The down side is getting clothes out without completely unpacking, but I like to hang things up if I can as soon asIam in the same placefor a couple of nights.
I also use contact lens containers for creamy liquids that I don’t need much of, such as antibiotic cream, foundation primer, etc. There are some that have little “gaskets” around the top so they’re less likely to leak. I’ve never had a problem using them and they save a lot of space and weight.

In 2019 I went to Israel for 14 days. Had to get everything in an international carry on. I scrapped the large toiletries bag and downsized into a much smaller version. I also bought several zip bags in the school supply section at WM. They came in different colors so I color coded stuff in these bags such as make up, electronics, etc. These bags have a clear side, allowing to see what is inside. I scrapped the shoe bags and used plastic grocery Sacks for individual shoes. I bought stacking bead storage containers in WM and decanted toiletry items in them. Six of them took the space of one 3 oz bottle. I found medium size packing cubes worked better than the large ones for the international size suitcase. These changes worked very well. No checked bag at $50.00.
Thanks - good tips. Lufthansa has a 18 pound carry on limit. I use a ScotteVest jacket with 24 pockets.

Also I love to use the small to medium plastic or fabric bags that bedding comes in as packing cubes. They are very durable and it cuts down on waste to reuse ♻️ them as much as possible. They are clear and I label with post it notes inside the little pockets the labels are in to help organize.

Why not just swap carry on for small/medium backpack? Eliminating a lot of the waste of weight in the case itself. Also allows you to avoid valet check of the carryon when the airlibe swaps out for a small plane with the old overheads. I actually fit more in a good backpack than a normal rolling case (that is "within" limits. Of course if you're bringing a full 24" size suitcase as your carryon (shouldn't but anymore seems like everyone is) it will hold more than a backpack.

If I am going someplace with warm weather I pack Sun dresses. It eliminates the need for 2 piece top and bottoms and I just pack a light sweater and wear a heavier jacket on the plane.

Your tipis are always great! I just got back from a 2 week Med cruise and I brought carry on only. I was so proud of myself. I did not miss anything. The best part is that when we arrived at the Barcelona airport we did not have to wait for the check in counter to open, we could go right through security and sit at a gate!
When I went to Italy on a 2-week school trip 6 1/2 years ago, I think I was the only one of the 13 of us who didn't check a suitcase, so I just breezed on through while the rest of my group was waiting at the baggage claim for their bags, and the same on the return trip - they all had to check in at the desk, but I went straight to security.

The weight of the bag itself is also important. For a European trip I use an ultralight backpack. Tom Bihn makes some great lightweight travel items. Pricey, but very well made.

Your videos are always full of so much great information Laurie! I think this may be why I have so many types of packing cubes and bags. I like the Eagle Creek Specter cubes/bags for lightweight travel - they are literally lighter than a ziploc bag! And in warmer weather, I will pack a silky tank top with 3 or 4 filmy translucent tops that go over it. All those pieces can smush down into a small makeup pouch, they take up virtually no space. Replacing liquids with those dry soap sheets made for backpacking also helps - they make them in several types: shampoo, laundry detergent, hand soap, body soap. Although I have a sneaking suspicion that they are all the same product with different labels! My 'plus one' bag is always something that can conform to any space rather than one with stuff sides (either a Kipling Art tote or a Vera Bradley weekender)

Love Love Love your videos. Purchased a Travelon anti-theft messenger bag, it was just the best bag for all my needs. Just got back from Italy and this bag did it all. At times, I had two water bottles on each end of the messenger bag and Italy in August equals drink lots of water. Again, love your videos, keep keeping everyone informed.

They will always be on the Airstream, in case I have to fly into ATL for mama. On the last International trip we redistributed the hubby's shoes into my case to equal out the weight. Loved this video. I switched over a year ago to toothpaste tablets (even at home). I can get a month's worth of toothpaste in a mint tin. In addition to being compact for travel, tabs have the advantage of being better for the environment - no plastic tubes.

I love all your tips. Recently I traveled to Europe with an international size carryon and a personal item for under the seat. I had on a raincoat with lots of pockets which held chargers, phone and any heavy some item to reduce the weight in my carryon and personal item which both had weight restrictions. For my solid toiletries referring to soaps. I warm mine up in the mircowave for about .15 seconds. It makes them soft enough to cup them down. I also tested different sizing of the soaps to see how long it will take to use. Instead of bringing the whole bar of soaps. I have all bars, shampoo, conditioner, facial, and body. Best decision to switch ever. I usually store them in the madotor soap bag.

On another note, had a good travel day on Labor Day (to MN for my friend's wedding a month ago) - it set a new record for the friendliest security experience ever, even though it was 5 a.m. (my first real red-eye flight, at 5:45 - all my other early ones were 7 a.m. or later), but I honestly wouldn't expect anything less at that airport; I told them how much we truly appreciate them being friendly and cheerful even though it was really early and that I know it's not always easy at that hour, and the one officer told me that it's easier to be cheerful than to yell at people: that's small town Wyoming for you.
I had also completely forgotten which pocket I had put my liquids in (packed them the night before and have PreCheck, so didn't have to take them out, and they were hiding behind something else; remembered where they were eventually, but panicked for a minute and thought I had forgotten them at home), and they were happy to run my backpack back through again to just make sure they were in fact actually in there (apparently, at least on their particular scanner, applesauce, peanut butter, and canned chicken salad don't really look like liquids, but when I told them what was in my liquids bag, they said that what it looked like on the scanner matched my description of the contents).
The gate agent who was also working the tarmac there was really awesome - I was running about 15 minutes late getting to the airport, and was legit concerned that they would already be boarding by the time I got through security (they suggest getting to that airport only an hour before departure because the single security line feeds directly into the boarding area, and boarding started 25 minutes before departure), but the gate agent was super helpful and friendly, and the impression I got from her was that they were actually waiting for me to get through security and get my stuff and self situated before they started even preboarding (which for that flight consisted of just me), and since the flight was only about 1/2-2/3 full it wasn't a big deal.
The flight attendant was great, too - the gate agent had moved me up several rows from the back to near the front, and I had an open seat next to me (I was in the window seat); I couldn't put my suitcase in the cargo hold because there was a lithium battery in it (not a smart bag, the battery for my nebulizer, and it was pretty buried, so would have been a lot of work to pull it out), so she helped me see whether it would fit in the overhead bin, but it didn't, so she let me put it under the seat next to the one in front of me, since there was no one next to me who would be needing that space (yes, there was more space under the aisle seat than in the overhead bin).
Oh, and update, sometime in the last couple years (the last time I flew out of there was mid-August 2020), that airport finally got an ID/boarding pass scanner at security - before, they would literally just hold them up next to each other to make sure the names matched, and compare my face to my ID to make sure it was mine. It will probably be a while before they get the new technology where they only have to scan the ID, though (if they ever get it at all), since they're a tiny airport, and if it took them this long just to get even just the regular scanner, who knows how long it will take for them to get the advanced tech (not that I mind - I was actually rather impressed that they'd even gotten the normal scanner in the first place).
I carry the IATA paperwork for my wheelchair motor when I fly, and in DEN there was a bit of consternation with the first gate agent, who didn't want to see the paperwork, let alone show it to the pilot, but still insisted that I had to put the motor under the seat in front of me because it had a lithium battery, even though I had told her at the beginning that the paperwork said it was safe for it to fly in the overhead bin, that that's what I had always done in the past, and if I put it under the seat it would end up just sliding around. Eventually, a different gate agent and another couple staff (not sure if they were passenger assistance team or also gate agents) came over, I showed it to them, and they borrowed it to study it (if I hadn't needed it for the return trip, I would have just given it to them, since I just print a new one for each trip and write the dates, my flights, and seat number for each on it; I think one of them took a pic of it because they'd never seen the IATA for that particular motor, so they wanted to learn about it and what made it safe to fly in the overhead) and show the pilot. Eventually the second gate agent came back to give me back the IATA and let me know that everything was set to go.
It was smooth sailing from there - including having the entire row to myself again _(6 weeks later, I now can't remember whether I got moved forward in the plane for that flight as well or not)_ - and despite it being the first time in quite a while that I was on a plane with screens on the back of the seats, I was so exhausted from packing up taking far longer than I ever expected - and thus not getting any sleep the night before - that I slept through most of the movie that I had selected; guess I'll just have to get it out of the library and watch it again.
I just bought one of those carryons like the one in the background. Hope it really does fit under seats!
I recently bought the cadence magnetic containers. They are not cheap but they don’t leak and you can customize the tiles with whatever label you want or use their standard ones. I really like them for my shampoo and conditioner. Love the Lush body soap and lotion that come in a bar. Made so much more room in my liquid bag. Thanks for sharing 😍😘

Fewer shoes was the hardest for me! Packing fewer clothing items (and rewearing them) makes deciding what to wear so much easier-fewer decisions =less stress + more fun!😊
It is those bulky shoes! I brought 2 pairs of boots and could barely pack anything else to Canada.

Last European holiday I packed all my old underwear and after I’d worn them I just threw them out. So I took 60 pairs of old knickers and each morning after showering I’d put fresh knickers on and I’d throw away the old ones I’d worn the previous day and the old ones I’d worn to bed. 30 day trip to Europe. Had extra room in my luggage coming home for all my souvenirs.
I do this too. Took all my old undies to Europe last trip and had extra room when coming home.

In Australia carryon luggage is mostly about weight not size, and the little delsey suitcase you showed is what I use. Super helpful tips!

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Yes, it is a problem for us here in Australia. We can have a 10kg carryon for domestic flights but international flights allow only 7kg...both with another personal bag. I am flying to Melbourne from Perth next month to take a cruise around New Zealand. My aim is to limit myself to the 10kgs. No, we don't do formal nights just smart casual for dinner every evening.

Europe and England in particular are very strict about liquids. They have to be in containers of no more than 100mls and fit into a clear plastic bag no bigger than 7.5in x 7.5in.
We have found that London Heathrow is strict but they have bags to put your liquids in to if our quart sized bag is too large.

Laurie you are a lifesaver. My husband booked us on Emirates to Greece because it was the only non-stop he could find and I had no idea their carryon limits would be so much less than UA or AA. We always travel carryon only for our European vacations and never had a problem between the carryon and our personal item but Emirates only allows 1 carryon item 22x15x8 and under 15 pounds. I wanted to cry. I've already paired down so much to make carryon only our way of life and now we will have to check a bag and bring 2 small carryons. You have found me the only suitcase that is 8" or less. I won't do checked luggage only as I'm afraid it could get lost. Thank you!

Qantas domestic now allow 10kg carry on. I am flying from Perth to Melbourne next month to take a cruise around NZ so grateful for the extra 3kg allowance as I do not want to check a bag. From previous experience cruising NZ in November, I know it can be both cold and quite warm.

In Australia, domestic flights are limited to 7kgs carry on in total. I think you can pay extra to take up to 10 kegs. It’s been a couple of years since I have flown anywhere. The airlines weigh your carry on items beforehand.
I have been using different size ziplocks for years. Easy to see whats in it. Use 1 gallon for wet clothes. My next trip I am going to use across the body square type soft zip suitcase. Handle types add such weight. Mix and match outfits. No checked baggage.

Great tips covered in the video. These are my travel hacks for minimizing my travel essentials-
1. Wear all black sneakers with a black sole. Can wear either casually but also can be worn to restaurants with trousers and no one notices as they appear like black shoes in dimly lit restaurants. Allows me to bring only one pair of "shoes" for a trip that i have sprayed in advance with a water repellant product.
2. For carry-on luggage, i have used a relatively small cardboard box that had a side handle. It was a decorative color so it looked intentional as a piece of luggage. Almost no weight for the box and it protected the contents. Seems like an opportunity here to manufacture "disposable luggage"!
2. I found a very light weight backpack at TJ Maxx that had 3 sides of thin vinyl and rhe front side is a mesh fabric. Almost no weight. With packing cubes, it's easy to keep contents organized and hidden from view through the mesh side.
For casual vacation trips, this approach to carry-on luggage has let me bring what i need for the trip without exceeding the weight limitations.
Those are great ways to reduce weight too!

Blue jeans, especially the heavier winter weight ones, are probably the single bulkiest and heaviest trousers. I used chinos or comfy dress trousers with a synthetic blend. Sadly, we found my favorite underseat carry on is an inch too big post-covid. I used to use it and it was fine as long I did not over stuff it. The actual frame is now an inch too big on the base. And I took it on a domestic Swedish airline once where the size and weight were much less than international. Also, after TSA cut my TSA approved tiny padlocks I went back to zip-ties and a small nail clipper to hold my zippers closed. I keep the nail clipper in my purse and stash a pile of zip-ties in one of the outer pockets.
