    This shows exactly how arrogant and complacent Zwift have been over the last five years or so. I wish these guys every success - and Zwifters will also benefit if there is a viable alternative pushing Zwift to improve their offering.

    • @LarsRR
      @LarsRR ปีที่แล้ว +50

      I‘m all for competition and choice. However, Zwift not improving on graphics and therefore having been complacent, is a little too one sided for me. They have improved significantly in terms of usability, functions, and reliability. Especially the latest few updates with teleportation, caffe stops, all routes being available always, added pace partners etc. added a lot to the experience for me.
      Also crashes and drop outs have become really rare.
      Just saying, that there is more to this than graphics.

      @@LarsRR Agree wholeheartedly, I've just come off trying Rolla and it lacks all the mapping, interaction and fun of Zwift... It may well improve with time, I hope so...

      @@MartinGallacher Sounds like everyone needs to choose to suit their own preferences. I found that the "interaction" was the opposite of fun, just a severe irritation. Without decent graphics (and being very dingily lit) the overall experience was tedious.
      BTW I did stick it out for over 30 rides to see if I was being too quick to judge.

      Arrogant and complacent? Really? I’m not a die hard Zwifter and would choose Trainer Road over Zwift, but the community and user experience that zwift offers isn’t what I would really call arrogant and complacent. They’ve done quite a bit to expand their platform and keep it user friendly.

    Had another go today after the app update and works better - the resistance was a setting, was set to 50% and I always have it at 100%- the only flaw so far, the app was set to imperial but the screen showed metric - the phone app, on the status screen it would be useful to add and remove tabs but it's getting there keep up the good work

    Just had a go and really like it. I used my iPad and it has the feel of a top end game. It was a bit ‘bumpy’ and grainy in places and figured it was streamed but it worked well. It has the feel of being somewhere too, lots of depth in the field of view unlike say RGT which is a bit sparse on the assets front. I always look for a decent avatar, and like this one although the out of the saddle animation needs work. Seems promising 👍🏼

      Having seen your video I tried out Rolla. I am not into f 0:04 eatures like group rides or events, but just want a good simulator for outdoor rides indoors, and Rolla sounded like it matched my needs. I used my iPhone and an iPad for the display, and found that the graphics were a bit laggy and there were some unusual sudden changes in effort required. The garage did not work for customising my avatar. A weakness for me is that the display could do with an indication of the upcoming gradients (like on Wahoo RGT) and the ability to upload a ride to Strava from the history. I did not have the auto upload switched on, so my ride is stuck in Rolla rather than on Strava where I want it. My trainer is a WattBike Atom, which connected fine, but I would like an indication of the gear I am in on the display. I also noted an inconsistency in the units displayed - I selected imperial, which is what was displayed on Rolla Active on my iPhone, but the Rolla World display on my iPad was showing the same figures labelled with metric units. Ergo mode does not appear to be available either. I contacted Rolla to report my issues but am still waiting a response.

    What makes this interesting for me is that it supports AndroidTV. I have a few Nvidia Shield devices hooked up to TVs, they have plenty of graphical power and would be ideal, but none of the platforms currently support running their app on them. I sideloaded Zwift at one point, but it's a massive hassle and breaks way too often. The fact that rolla does support AndroidTV is a big plus for me, way less steps to get riding. If it has some decent structured workouts too, I can see myself being very happy here.

      Same. Zwift isn't going anywhere for me because of the social aspect, not a single other "competitor" in the space is even trying in this realm, they're all trying to either look pretty[er] (which personally I like the cartoony way Zwift looks). Or are more of a direct competitor to something like RGT, than Zwift itself.
      I love my group rides.

    After seeing your video, I tried this out on my WattBike Atom. It connected fine, using my Rolla Active on my iPhone and Rolla World on my iPad for the display. However the graphics were a little glitchy and the ride had some unexpected sudden changes in effort. I think the display needs an indication of the upcoming gradient (like on Wahoo RGT) and something to make it clear you have completed the route. I selected imperial units, but whilst the control and display were showing the same figures, the control reported then as imperial whereas the display was metric. An option to upload your ride from the history is needed too. I did not have the auto upload turned on (the status of selector buttons needs improving) so my ride is stuck in Rolla rather than up on Strava where I want it. There does not appear to be an ergo mode option either. Am still waiting for a response from Rolla to my issues (I raised a support ticket). I will persist with Rolla as it looks like a good fit to my needs.

The cadence didn’ everr connect. I use a stages sb20 and haven’t had issues with other apps. Also couldn’t get it paired for HR to my Fenix 6X. I did set up garmin and strava sync, but the activity never did sync. It looks like you need to have both a phone and a display device. I used my ipad for the display, and my iPhone for the control. Its not too bad. Felt a little clunky but perhaps I just need to get used to it. I’ll leave it installed and maybe give it another go on a non-sunny day. Any Rouvy user can do this and there are professionally created video routes, but it can be time consuming to create a really good rideable route.
      RGT also enables you to create your own Magic Roads based in a real life GPS trace. Probably also money issues to get it up and running given their (lack of) budget.
      It does explain their initial two app implementation. A (dumb) 'screen' app on the main hardware platform, eg, PC, and a fully featured controller app on the phone. They moved to the current more conventional implementation after they gave up on the streaming idea and had too many complaints about connectivity and set up issues with the original two app dependency creating multiple potential points of failure.

    More than a little difficult to setup, uses some permission like “drawover” without telling you what to do. Getting it to connect needed flipping wifi nw and dropping the vpn. In game it looks good but the the actual cyclist model looks a little odd, and I’m not sure the resistance is right, I was spinning on on the flat in max gear. For free though, especially when zwift is turned off for the summer its worth a go.

    Is greater realism really the advantage another platform needs to compete with (or overtake) Zwift? So many new platforms seem to think that is answer, but most riders have the option to ride outdoors/IRL as an alternative. Zwift has so much momentum and infrastructure in place (ZwiftPower, the Companion app, ZwiftInsider, ZwiftRacing, etc.). All the other potential virtual cycling apps seem to have difficulty building the social aspect and enough daily users to gain traction. I really don't think there is a "Zwift-killer" out there as long as Zwift continues a moderate pace of improvements and doesn't somehow blow up through mismanagement.

    I tried this for the first time yesterday and it was not a good experience. Graphics are great but 3 main issues I had.
    1. Strava integration didn't work.
    2. Smart trainer integration not accurate. Anything under 2% I was spinning in the 52x11. So I just to try the mountain pass route. Even at 6.6% I was spinning at 90 rpm 200 watts halfway up the block on the big ring.
    3. The app just crashes repeatedly between 6-8 minutes, like clockwork each time. This happened 7 times in a row.

    Graphics do not a platform make of course. The pop-up in Rolla is pretty distacting. That said, it looks pretty nice and if they can overcome the 'network effect' of Zwift they could succeed. I tried Rouvy and just did not find it very exciting. Zwift just seems to have a nice mix of things that make it engaging so it's gonna be hard for someone to challenge them but good luck to them anyways.

    Good for the consumer with competition within this space. However, for me graphics is far from the most important thing when it comes to this software. Yes, it’s nice to have good graphics and Zwift probably needs to upgrade this sooner rather than later but social aspects, large maps, competitions etc is far more important in my opinion. Also, while the graphics shown do look great things like render distance is terrible. In the video you are trees and terrain pop up constantly. Also, there are problems with streaming games to other platforms, mostly delay which makes any competitions difficult.

    • @jasonhurst2491
      @jasonhurst2491 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2 device thing is the price of designing specificallyfor streaming. It's why RGT did it initially, but they never got their streaming idea off the ground. RGT have since changed to a more conventional main app and companion app implementation to reduced connectivity/setup issues as 2 devices create multiple potential points of failure. So it will be interesting to see what Rolla do in the future.

    I ran away from Zwift, 5 years ago. Too much people, too many cheaters, unrealistic speed and shitty physics' engine.
    And in fact, when riding on my trainer, I prefer to see and feel “real” roads instead of 3D virtual worlds. I moved from one platform to the other, over the years. Last Winter, I chose Rouvy, and in the end, my training sessions are more realistic. I get satisfaction by finishing famous roads, as well as improving my times on them, as that's what comes the closest from what I may, one day, be able to do in real life.

    surely this looks ten times better than Zwift, but it all comes down to how many people are willing to switch, so that races get a decent amount of attendance. Empty worlds would be the death sentence of this new app. Maybe they could add some NPCs? I'm not sure if Zwift does that besides the robopacers.
    As for me personally, I only have three months of progress in Zwift, so not much that would keep me from getting Rolla.
