Dude. I’ve been watching these guys for 40 years. I’ve known for this long that they are the GOAT. On and off the stage they carry themselves with class. Three virtuosos in one band….only three of them! Sound like 6. RIP Neil. Miss you.
So have I, my first show was Grace under pressure in 84, which is the album from which this particular song is from. These 3 guys blow 4 &5 piece bands out of the water , with their sound and musicianship. Greatest rock trio in the history of music.
I gotta a say. I’ve always realized that these guys were under appreciated in the music world for years. I always defended them when criticism was cast upon them. I’m an underdog guy. Their humility was always intriguing to me. To answer your question I was hopeful that people would see their value in the industry. I believe people today are amazed even more of their musicianship, especially in this digital age. These guys created technology for a band. This was a band that surrounded themselves with good people also which you need to be successful. As Dave G. said …no hype, no bullshit….built the band the right way. These guys said their goodbyes and went out on top. Blueprint for a band. What a career. Who could not respect that. Fan or not.
@@CrazyLife2112 absolutely not ! I've been a fan since '76. Started watching these reaction videos 2/3 years ago and I get such a buzz from watching young people discover what we have known for 40+ years. Lost count of the times I've watched reactions to the live version of Xanadu 😊 and I never tire of it 😂
I saw them in 82 in Boston Garden, Signals Tour, and saw every tour after that. I was there in Hartford for the comeback, I could not have said it better my friend
The lyrics though.... soooo goood! Show me another Rock band that wrote a song referencing the 1910's - 1930's - "Lost Generation", "Dustbowl", "Brother Can You Spare?". Their albums were mostly all themed. This one highlighted wars and battles, from internal conflict, to futuristic ones, to WWI, to the Cold War.
Alex is what I would consider a complete guitarist. While there are many technically amazing guitarists out there, most don't have the depth of sound that he produces. If you listen from album to album, the amount of innovation with guitar tone is insane. Most guitarists struggle to get the tone they like. Alex says "I'll take all the tones, please and thank you."

Agreed... goosebumps too. I saw them play this on my 40th birthday... the first and only time I saw them play it. Ain't gonna lie... I cried like a baby!
I was fortunate enough to see this R30 tour two nights at Radio City Music Hall. Absolutely amazing to see them in a venue that size. I was ecstatic when they broke this out. Made my night.
Another great pick, this is the best song on the album in my opinion. Like Middletown Dreams, not one of the hits, but the most musically ambitious song on the album. And this live performance is among the biggest his guitar has ever sounded.
I think it's about time we start including Lifeson in the greatest guitarists list. It's always Blackmore,Page, Clapton and Hendrix. This dude is sorely underated and someone needs to explain why he is always left out of that conversation.
Alex is one of the most passionate guitarists ever. Bytor and the Snow Dog from the Live Exit Stage Left is such a fun song and Alex makes some crazy sounds. I hope you get to it.
Bytor from the moving pictures concert is the best sample from Rush in their history of playing and it has only been reacted to 2-3 times because Rush fans are too ignorant to know it…..
This really is probably my favorite RUSH album 😍 Love it from start to finish, the artwork, the darkness of it. Everything! Cannot wait for the 40th anniversary drops! Fun fact- All though this song mentions the word "wheels" quite a bit, Geddy never actually says the song title "Between the Wheels". In fact only two songs on GUP mentions the song title in the song- "Kid Gloves and Enemy Within" 😉
Thank you for reacting to this! Between the Wheels is one of my favorite songs; Alex is a damn demon with monster tone. Off of one of their most underrated (and best, imho) albums.
I was a junior in HS when this record came out almost 40 yrs and I played it non stop that whole summer. The notes Alex plays at 5:08 are some of my favorites he's ever played. Excellent reaction! If memory serves me, this was 2007 or 2008, during their Snakes and Arrows tour. I saw a show on this tour, and remember being ecstatic when they played this as it had been a favorite of mine for a long time. And the production value of the light show with the moving LCD screens, as you pointed out, accentuated the melody.
This has always been one of my favorite Rush songs, so glad to see a reaction to it! The first time I saw them in concert was in support of this album, Grace Under Pressure, and I saw them in every tour that followed.
I've been a huge Rush fan since '88 when I was in 7th grade and thankfully I've been able to see them live every tour since that time. Obviously, I like all of their music but when I saw this first performed live during the Vapor Trails tour, it just became one of my favorite songs by them. I wish they could have recorded all of their songs live because sometimes those old 80's recording just don't match the power of the same song live. But these videos due and like I said, I was just blown away by this song again by seeing it live.
Hey guys love your enthusiasm and appreciation for great music . I have seen Rush 36 x. Met geddy Lee and Alex. Huge fan obviously. I was born in August of 68' when they formed, my dad's name was Lee Gaddy and my mother shared the same name as Geddy Lees wife (Nancy). I didn't realize that till about ten years after I bought my first Rush vinyl records! I knew all the lyrics to every song and pretty much still do. Every time I see them live ..... I get chills up my spine, because I remember how I felt when I saw them live. I saw about 150 concerts in my life but Rush was far better than anyone. I'm talking led Zeppelin Pink Floyd , Boston, Ozzy, Tool, Yes, Aerosmith, Metallica, etc. They will never be touched as the greatest 3-piece rock band that ever was assembled !!!!!
This has always been one of my favorite Rush songs. "To live between the wars in our time" encapsulated everything I feared for in 1984. I had so much paranoia being a young adult, feelings about the world and physical loss, fear for the future...and EVERY song on Grace Under Pressure spoke to me and had hidden meanings, culminating in this song, finale to the album. Powerful stuff
I've been a fan of Rush since the summer of '75. I was lucky enough to see them live 8 times beginning in 1981. I saw this the Vapor Trails tour in Milwaukee in 2002 and they were on fire!! My favorite band!!
Believe it or not, there are Rush "fans" who cannot stand the songs where they use a lot of synthesizers and think that the album that produced this song is garbage. I'll never understand that mentality. I absolutely love watching Geddy go back and forth between instruments. The talent and coordination to do that (and sing!) always amazes me.
I'm with ya bruddah. I LOVE the "keyboard era". They were arguably at their peak as musicians, and so many of these songs, such as this one, are incredible.
@@Cash2112 GUP is the last album that has that prog sound to it. Power Windows onwards sounds very different but they found their way back and went out with a royal bang with Clockwork Angels.
This came out back in 1984! I always loved these lines from this song: It slips between your hands Like water This living in real time A dizzying lifetime Reeling by on celluloid...
The same year on the airwaves of Van Halens 1984, I recall on tours these bands would cross paths and Eddie gave props to Alex on his work on this album!!
This showed up in my feed and am glad it did as I watch this on the third anniversary of Neil's passing. Smiling through the tears, Neil, Alex & Geddy you are the best!!
You're completely right - the intro beat on this is one of their heaviest. Neil's almost dragging the pocket and Alex is just cranking those huge power chords and let them ring out. And when it comes back it's even heavier.
So the washing machines are there because Geddy Lee plugs into the house system so he does not require amps. Alex chooses to run through amps so he has a stack of them behind him. Geddy said this left his side empty and the stage out of proportion, so he put washing machines behind him. In later tours he replaced them with a big carnival popcorn machine that actually popped behind him, vending machines, and a rotisserie chicken roaster, and a sausage maker.Just fun stuff.
Definitely one of Alex's top 10, if not top 5 solos. The studio version is at a slightly faster tempo, and while the song is still great, it comes across as harsher (the whole album really). Of all of the guitarists I've heard live, Alex brings the goods when it comes to replicating and even enhancing what was originally recorded. Maybe better than anyone else. Geddy' was in his live vocal prime on this song in '04. Between the band's return in '01 and Snakes & Arrows in '07, he used all of his accumulated experience and his range cooperated. Not a struggle to sing the old stuff as originally recorded and able to add nuance . But in '11 during The Time Machine Tour, father-time caught up. The last 3 tours had some rough moments vocally, but the musicianship was better than ever. Knowing how honest Geddy is, I bet if you ask him about these tours he'd admit the struggles. The perfectionist he is.
14 times for me, in 4 countries - England, Scotland, Germany and Holland, 84 to 2013. Clockwork Angels was the last time we got to see them. Every show I saw was an event. Best live band I've ever seen. Bar none.
Besides washing machines, during Rush's Time Machine tour in which that my friends and I went to in Oct of 2010, Geddy Lee had big rotisserie cookers cooking chickens. As Rush plays their songs, chef walks by to check on the chickens. Then cooked chickens are served to the crew after concert ends at each stop.
This song managed to make it in the majority of their tours since R30 (2005?)... It's always great to see live, for sure. The wheels cogs turn from the stage and along the sides and ceiling. Spectacular visually for sure. Their stages and their lights shows were always amazing, but still second to their performances. I was lucky to see them 12 times between R30 and R40 .... Geddy may have missed a note now and then, but he never sounded pitchy, and I live in the desert where it's dry. He has taken pretty good care of his voice..... there are just some songs they would not play. Temples of Syrinx from 2112 was a tough one, and I think he sang their parts in a lower octave. In either case, they still always sounded amazing... This is definitely one of my faves. I seriously tear up during the chorus every time I listen to it. Darn them for making me cry. Lol
I had the privilege of performing this song last march on Cruise to the Edge's "Late Night Live" event (prog rock cruise where cruisers can perform on a stage after all the main shows are done). An under-appreciated song IMHO.
As a rush fan to me this song may reference 1910's to 1930's but it references to me being between 2 different people and you have no control over the situation and the music desbribes the feeling perfectly with no decision made in the end- still caught in the middle.
Songs like this show the genius of these guys, as the "beat they started the song with" as you say, is actually a reggae influenced beat, but with that prog twist to it
Simply put………RUSH IS AMAZING. I got to see this song live in 2003 & as awesome as it is on the DVD it’s even more awesome when you are there in person!! RUSH FOREVER!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
This song in particular has always been an extreme interest for me. It's as if the band made a point to try and never land on the 1 anywhere in the song. That along with Neil pulsing the 2 and 4 and the heavy guitars... just a great great feel and overall different song.
To live between a rock And a hard place In between time - Cruising in prime time - Soaking up the cathode rays To live between the wars In our time - Living in real time - Holding the good time - Holding on to yesterdays… You know how that rabbit feels Going under your speeding wheels Bright images flashing by Like windshields towards a fly Frozen in the fatal climb - But the wheels of time - Just pass you by… Wheels can take you around Wheels can cut you down We can go from boom to bust From dreams to a bowl of dust We can fall from rockets’ red glare Down to “Brother can you spare -” Another war - another waste land - And another lost generation… It slips between your hands Like water This living in real time A dizzying lifetime Reeling by on celluloid Struck between the eyes By the big-time world Walking uneasy streets - Hiding beneath the sheets - Got to try and fill the void…
Have been a fan of Rush since 2112 even though I heard their first album on the radio. Seen them probably 20 times and they have been a huge part of my life for a long time. Being a drummer myself, it’s still painful to see Neil in videos. The planets will never align again to have three amazing musicians become friends and form a band like Rush.
Love your reactions to Rush. As a recommendation I suggest you listen to every live video and album in there catalog. First a foremost is 2112 All the Worlds Stage ( live) 1976. Exit Stage left ( live) Rush replay x3 video, thenR-30 video, Snakes and Arrows tour, Rush in Rio, Time Machine tour, Clockwork Angels, and then there last tour video is R -40 , all of these shows are LIVE on video. Then you can have a better perspective of there songs , there are a few more live shows out there on video, 1979 Pink Pop festival, the return afterNeils absence Hartford Con. And finally you need to watch Rush, Beyond the Lighted Stage cd. To gain a true perspective of the chemistry of these 3 guys.!!!
Some recommendations Neil's drum solo live in Germany - awesome Cygnus bk1 & 2 The Garden ( after 40+ years they finished with a incredible album in Clockwork Angels) the most beautiful song imaginable and the last track on the album And finally Their video 'Dinner with Rush' it's hilarious. Alex is just sooo funny
The performance on the snakes and arrows tour video was a lot better than this one. But a great song. I remember the day I bought and listened to this album on headphones(vinyl) back in the 80's. But I got every album on release day back then.
I'm surprised you haven't done La Villa Strangiato yet. I would recommend the R30 - Rush 30th Anniversary Tour where they play La Villa Strangiato/By-Tor and the Snow-Dog where Alex is being extra goofy.
Y'all really need to check out "Lock and Key" from the Hold Your Fire album. There's a video for it and Neil Peart absolutely goes off for the last minute or so of the song. It's the best I've ever heard from him outside of his solos. Please, please, please give it a listen. You'll be glad you did.
This is one of their best songs. Underrated.

Nevermind Alex' effing solo, Geddy's bass is killing it and Neil on skins is second to none . What a band
If this is not peak Geddy what is? Yeah he sounded awesome
Simply put………RUSH IS AMAZING.
I got to see this song live in 2003 & as awesome as it is on the DVD it’s even more awesome when you are there in person!!
RUSH FOREVER!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
I wish you would check out savatage I'd start with the song handful of rain it's amazing
This song in particular has always been an extreme interest for me. It's as if the band made a point to try and never land on the 1 anywhere in the song. That along with Neil pulsing the 2 and 4 and the heavy guitars... just a great great feel and overall different song.
To live between a rock
And a hard place
In between time -
Cruising in prime time -
Soaking up the cathode rays
To live between the wars
In our time -
Living in real time -
Holding the good time -
Holding on to yesterdays…
You know how that rabbit feels
Going under your speeding wheels
Bright images flashing by
Like windshields towards a fly
Frozen in the fatal climb -
But the wheels of time -
Just pass you by…
Wheels can take you around
Wheels can cut you down
We can go from boom to bust
From dreams to a bowl of dust
We can fall from rockets’ red glare
Down to “Brother can you spare -”
Another war - another waste land -
And another lost generation…
It slips between your hands
Like water
This living in real time
A dizzying lifetime
Reeling by on celluloid
Struck between the eyes
By the big-time world
Walking uneasy streets -
Hiding beneath the sheets -
Got to try and fill the void…
Have been a fan of Rush since 2112 even though I heard their first album on the radio. Seen them probably 20 times and they have been a huge part of my life for a long time. Being a drummer myself, it’s still painful to see Neil in videos. The planets will never align again to have three amazing musicians become friends and form a band like Rush.
Best ever. Saw them 20 times and this tour was amazing.
Great reaction again, y’all!! Happy New Year to y’all! Be well and God Bless… from Texas!!
Happy New Year!
I am Brazilian and you don´t know what they did in Time Machine Tour Live at Rio ! ... It was surreal !
I’ve never heard this, what a treat! Love the beginning, and, when they bring it back it hits even harder holy shit so good. 🤘😄
Dryers not washing machines because Geddys sound is clean and dry.
This version is a Master piece, very powerful
I love how tuned in your wife is to Geddy’s bass riffs. ❤
Better than the original recording. I always wished Alex would have played a heavy sound.
This is a great deep cut!! Happy New Years to you and yours!!
Happy New Year!
Happy new year to you both.. This was brilliant..
Thanks! Happy New Year
When you watch Rush, you get a Rush 😉
Rush never grows old, and they constantly amaze me with their skill and talent.
Some recommendations
Neil's drum solo live in Germany - awesome
Cygnus bk1 & 2
The Garden ( after 40+ years they finished with a incredible album in Clockwork Angels) the most beautiful song imaginable and the last track on the album
And finally
Their video 'Dinner with Rush' it's hilarious. Alex is just sooo funny
The performance on the snakes and arrows tour video was a lot better than this one. But a great song. I remember the day I bought and listened to this album on headphones(vinyl) back in the 80's. But I got every album on release day back then.
Do “the analog kid” live and listen for a choral synth part during the guitar solo, at the same time watch geddys foot.
one of best rush songsa :)
GEDDY, ALEX, NEIL WHAT ARE YOUR MIDDLE NAMES??? ALL THREE ANSWER AT ONCE: TIME SIGNATURES
awesome ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘😎😎
I'm surprised you haven't done La Villa Strangiato yet. I would recommend the R30 - Rush 30th Anniversary Tour where they play La Villa Strangiato/By-Tor and the Snow-Dog where Alex is being extra goofy.
Rush, the world's smallest ever symphony orchestra....
DAMN it,...I miss these cats...😞🥺
Good job! Thanks!!!
