  • Today we’re going to talk about one of the rules of filmmaking, which is the 180-degree shutter rule. This is rule has existed a long time ago when old film camera shoots only 24fps,25fps, and 30fps. However, in this modern age, the digital camera allows us to film more than that. My question for this video is, are we getting the same amount of motion blur if we only change the frame rate, while keeping the shutter speed constant. Secondly, which frame rate should we use when we are filming slow-mo such as 60fps or 120fps? Lastly, Does it really matter in a real-world project?
In this video we're going to find out for you.

Interesting. I understand where the history comes from. There is so many factors but I question is it subjective due to technologies and experience? Regardless great explanation. I am schooled again. Thank you 🙏

I love your explanation. I think I understand to an extent. I'm shooting a wedding with the black magic 6k and in the post-production, i'd like to do a alomo with speed ramping. which fps and shutter speed would you advise I shoot on?

Exactly. It all depends on the speed of motion you're capturing.

    Key Takeaways:
1 Break rule and use faster Shutter speed in Slow MO to get sharper footage
2 If you don't have money to buy an expensive ND filter use a faster Shutter speed 😆

Good idea bro if I recording in 30 f so the speed?????

@@walybox If not going for slow motion I stick to double the Frame rate. Meaning if you shoot 30p Shutter will be 1/60

@@walybox it's Not a must. You can wait a bit till the light drops. You need the ND specially if you wanna use a Wide aperture on a sunny day while maintaining a 1/60 shutter speed. If you don't have an ND use a smaller aperture for the time

I always recommend to film 180 or two times the frame rate. Higher Shuttle Speed will make the image low quality. Meaning that you will have more noise. That's why a ND filter is a must in every production to keep the flow of image quality with 60 Shuttle speed if you film in 30fps. Never film in 24fps. It is a unicorn frame rate. No computer today or display will play at 24fps, so the computer will create the missing frames. Always save to film at the highest bitrate, resolution and right shuttle speed with a minimum of 30fps. Never less.

      Shutter *

What? Every 120hz screen can match 24 fps. Even 60hz screens can avoid interpolation issues and "correctly" reproduce 24 fps. What you are saying doesn't make any sense. Also, everyone knows if you are filming in a green screen you shouldn't respect shutter rules to avoid chroma spilling...

@@marcelo_afonso How can a 60hz screen display 24fps correctly? I can easily see the stuttering effect.
